Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is a modern and innovative city with a population of around 1.2 million people. With a Mediterranean climate, South Australia is home to some of the worlds leading wine growing areas, many of these within a one hour drive of the city.

A vast expanse of Australia’s central and outback regions are located to the north and west of Adelaide, however the city boasts many beautiful beaches and offers a wide variety of water sports. Almost all other sporting activities are also catered for in Adelaide.

Adelaide is a truly multicultural city. This diversity is reflected in the large number of carnivals and art festivals that are a feature of the Adelaide community, and the many fine restaurants, theatres and art galleries in the city.

Served by two sets of parallel runways, Parafield Airport has a substantial capacity for all circuit training. FTA is the dominant user on Parafield and enjoys strong support from airport management. Parafield Airport is located only 10 nautical miles from Adelaide International Airport, allowing students ready access to IFR operations in an international terminal area environment with only moderate traffic density.

Airspace

Ready access to unlimited uncontrolled airspace or immediate access to a radar controlled primary control zone combine to give FTA a significant training advantage. General flying training areas are readily available and a multitude of regional airfields with a variety of navigation aids are regularly utilised.

Weather

A variety of moderate weather conditions, usually accompanied by excellent visibility, provide a unique natural advantage for South Australia as a flying training environment. Summer is usually dry and hot with average daily temperature around 30° C while in winter the temperature averages around 15° C during the day with the coldest morning still above freezing.

The French CAP10B is a 180 hp, two seat aerobatic training aircraft constructed primarily of wood and fabric. Arguably the best aerobatic training aircraft in the world, its role at the College is to provide extreme unusual attitude recovery training.

The American BE76 is powered by two 180 hp engines, has four seats and is of metal construction. This aircraft features counter rotating, normally aspirated engines and is ideal for asymmetric training. Students also gain their initial twin rating and Command Instrument Rating on this aircraft.

The French TB10 is a 180 hp, four seat, all metal light aircraft. The TB10 is an ideal platform for the introduction of intermediate handling skills, navigation and basic instrument flying skills.

The German built Grob is a 115 hp, two seat, fibreglass trainer with outstanding training characteristics, particularly for landing. The method of construction has resulted in an extremely strong, safe airframe for basic training.TF

Flight Operations Room

Featuring innovative in-house developed software, the core of the operations room are the comprehensive Resource and Fatigue Management Systems that assist both staff and students in recording and managing all aspects of the daily flying and maintenance activity at the College.

Ground School

Consisting of nine air-conditioned, well equipped classrooms and manned by a highly talented and keenly motivated core of subject matter experts, FTA’s Ground School consistently achieves exceptionally high first time pass rates. The traditional “Chalk and Talk” method of instruction produces these excellent results for FTA but is supported by instructor-led Computer Based Training (CBT).

Maintenance

FTA’s approved maintenance organisation carries out the majority of maintenance tasks required. The condition of the aircraft, the dispatch reliability and the safety record of the College are testament to the professionalism and quality of the engineering section of the College.

Flight Training

FTA’s investment in the selection and development of flying instructors is significantly higher than industry standards. Cultural differences training and teaching to students with English as a second language are key elements in staff training.

Instructors are mentored through a formal development program that ensures timely acquisition of the various qualifications, ratings and endorsements required to teach at all levels.

Flight training operations are supplemented with

the use of synthetic training devices, from

desktop part task trainers to a motion based

Jet Transport Simulator.

Given the wide variety of synthetic trainers

available, the simulator instructors range from

line flying instructors for those activities related

to CPL training to a cache of highly experienced

Dining

With a long history of catering for different nationalities, our chefs are expert at preparing meals for differing cultural needs. The friendly atmosphere generated by catering staff regularly attracts favourable comment in exit surveys conducted by the College. Student input to menu development is encouraged and often forthcoming through the monthly Campus Committee meetings or the Student Welfare Manager.

Accommodation

Students are accommodated in modern, air-conditioned houses where each student has an individual bedroom/study and shares a lounge and bathroom with three other students – offering the ideal combination of individual privacy and mutual support.

Special arrangements are available for female students.

Recreational Facilities

A swimming pool, multi-purpose courts, golf putting green and driving nets, soccer pitch and gymnasium are all available within the residential complex.

Additionally the Learning Resource Centre provides internet access, the hire of video and digital cameras, a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books, popular CDs and more.
