MHSC 8114 The Persons Experience of Self-ManagementA topic about health service users' experience of chronic conditions

The Task:Pairing of Postgraduate multi-disciplinary health science studentsSet a lifestyle problem and behaviour change goal for themselvesDialogue to support each other weekly, using electronic means, over a 6 week period.

Assessment

A short reflective piece at the end of the first week

A reflective respond to their peer (or to other students in general) A final reflection at the conclusion of the 6 weeks on what they have learned and its potential impact on their health professional practice.

Drivers:For students to experience behaviour change first handTo walk a mile (or a few metres at least) in their clients' shoes To reflect on concepts of behaviour change and motivationTo reflect on how the experience can inform their efforts to motivate clients to change their health behaviour

Outcomes are that students:Realise how difficult behaviour change can beBecome more person-centred in their approach with clientsBecome more self-awareLife is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans

Problem: I am over committed with work, study and family, which leaves me sleep deprived and with no time to exercise, and this makes me feel overwhelmed, anxious and exhausted.

Goal: I will go to bed at 10.30 pm each night and get up at 6.30 am (8 hours) and I will use the treadmill for 3 x 30 minute sessions per week.
