Infartssignal…

Time to move on, indeed. Time to reflect, and time to project. It is an inescapable fact that the FLMJ will never be what I want it to be because of its outdoor location; “a scenic representation of Sweden, with a working railway to boot!” This has become more and more apparent over the last 18 months, and the lure of the 1:8 scale Acton Miniature Railway with its working signalling system was too much for me to ignore. The AMR has in fact, contributed to the projected work upon the FLMJ. It has provided inspiration for an even more simplified system of operation without losing any of its charm, and this even extends to the signalling, which I sincerely hope will go in this year. It has also provided the FLMJ with a sense of purpose, and the timetable that the FLMJ operates to is as authentic as it can be without being boring, but which also enables the railway to be operated authentically even if only one member is present; quite a change from the early days, when more operators were commonly present! There was also a very real fear that the FLMJ was becoming a ‘toy’ railway, that the Swedish identity was being eroded, and there was a tendency to just “play trains.” Well, aside from the one weekend a year when we have a non-SJ event, when people can run (within reason) what they want, the FLMJ is strengthening its identity as an authentic model of the Swedish Railways; and all persons who come into contact with it, be they regular friends, club members or guests, will be expected to respect that. Here’s to a better year; 2014 the year of emergence!

Svenska Järnvägs Nyheter Trafikverket says plans to build the country's first high-speed line between Stockholm and Gothenburg are taking shape, with development now well underway on the Stockholm - Linköping and Borås - Gothenburg sections. However, it remains unclear when the key central section, from Linkoping via Jönköping to Borås, of the 320km/h route will be approved by the government. Katarina Norén, Trafikverket's purchasing director, has said that this phase of the project is currently "resting" after no money was allocated towards it in Sweden's 2014-2025 Transport Plan announced last year. She said that despite the plan allocating 20% more to rail investment overall than its predecessor, a greater emphasis on infrastructure maintenance means there is simply not enough money to fund every proposed project. The Stockholm - Linköping project involves building 154km of new railway infrastructure from Järna southwest of Stockholm to Linköping at a cost of SKr 35bn, with funding set to come partly from the European Union under the Trans-European Networks (TEN) programme. The line will be double-track, and will include 20km of tunnels and 155 bridges totalling 10km. The line will also improve access to Stockholm Skavsta, Sweden's third largest airport. Planning is also underway on the 60km Gothenburg - Borås section of the project, which is estimated to cost SKr 15bn and will include a link to Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. The new double-track line will enable freight traffic to have dedicated space on existing infrastructure, a move which Norén says has the universal backing of Sweden's railfreight sector and will help to reduce maintenance costs. The four leaders of the centre-right Alliance want to expand the Stockholm T-bana network by extending the lines and building nine new stations. They also want to build an additional 78,000 apartments in the Swedish capital. The nine new stations would affect both the green and the blue T-bana lines and is an attempt to relieve the busy down-town traffic, and to

FLMJ-Nytt … 5

further connect the green and blue T-bana lines. The project would be the biggest in modern time in Stockholm and is estimated to cost SEK 25.7 billion. To help pay for the initiative the party leaders suggest an almost doubled congestion tax in down-town Stockholm from SEK 20 to 35. The government negotiator, HG Wessberg says that while the new deal will not solve the current housing shortage in the capital, it is a good start: "I think it's the most valuable contribution that can be done now, and that can be done with the participation of the government." The four planned projects include: • a branch off the Green Line from Odenplan to Hagastaden, which will open in 2020, with a further section to Arenastaden opening by 2025 • a southern extension of the Blue Line from Kungsträdgården to Sofia and an interchange with the Green Line at Gullmarsplan • a five-station extension of the Blue Line east from Kungsträdgården to Hammarby Canal, Sickla, Saltsjö-Järla and Nacka Forum, scheduled to open around 2025, and • an extension of the Blue Line Akalla branch to Barkaby station, which will be completed in 2021. Trains in central Stockholm were at a standstill after a goods train derailed near Södra Station, affecting all rail traffic in the capital region. The derailment occurred around 6.30am when the train jumped the tracks about 200 metres north of Södra Station. The train then struck and damaged a pillar. In addition to commuter rail traffic, long-haul passenger rail was also affected, with SJ redirecting trains to and from Gothenburg through Västerås, while trains to and from Malmö turned at Södertälje, and trains to and from Eskilstuna turned at Flemingsberg. All commuter rail traffic north of Stockholm stopped at Central Station, while trains to the south stopped at Alvsjö. Extra buses were put in service to help deal with the delays.

MTR Corporation, Hong Kong, has awarded a contract to Stadler, Switzerland, for six 200km/h trains for a new open-access express service to be launched in Sweden. Delivery of the five-car Flirt electric trains will start in autumn 2014, and they will be introduced on the 455km Stockholm – Gothenburg route in competition with SJ. The trains will be operated by a new MRT subsidiary called "MRT Nordic" which plans to run 110 trips per week offering a journey time of 3h 10min. A man has died after he was run over by two trains on two separate tracks in the southern Stockholm suburb of Huddinge at the end of November, after witnesses say he fell on the tracks. The incident occurred at 6.20pm when an apparently drunk man tumbled onto the tracks in front of horrified bystanders. SL confirmed that the man was hit by two separate trains. He was first hit by a train from SJ and in some way bounced to another track where the commuter train hit him. The man who ended up on the tracks was "staggering wildly" on the platform and was seen "yelling and joking" with a friend immediately before the accident. Another derailed goods train caused commuter chaos in Stockholm on Tuesday January 7th. The train came off the tracks between Stuvsta and Huddinge, south of Stockholm. Some trains in and out of Stockholm were redirected, resulting in delays of up to an hour, while some local train departures were cancelled altogether. The derailment was the second in the Stockholm region in recent months. In November, a goods train went off the rails just north of Södra Station, causing weeks of delays (see above). Commuters between Copenhagen and Malmö are travelling on the second most expensive railway in Europe, measured in ticket price per kilometre. A single ticket on this route costs around SEK 105. Only the Eurostar between London and Brussels is more expensive, according to a study by the International Union of Railways. And, Stockholm to Gothenburg is the third most expensive in Europe. _

Modell Järnvägs Nyheter

Jeco’s Ma-loco is now available in all proposed liveries and on a chassis that runs correctly! There had been a problem with the gear-drive falling apart (a problem which hadn’t been experienced with the FLMJ’s model), and the lights were the wrong type of white (cold (blue) white instead of warm (yellow) white) and they didn’t all light up correctly (a problem that the FLMJ did experience). All models were recalled for a new chassis, but Jeco’s problems were not over when the factory in China supplied the wrong wheels! So, further delays were experienced whilst these were changed also. In order to save on prohibitive postage costs, MJ-Hobbyexperten very kindly agreed to send the replacement chassis to the FLMJ with another order (including replacement wheels), and having changed them over here in the Ålunden workshop, we are returning the faulty kit during the immanent holiday to Sweden! Still with Jeco, the Bistrovagn has now been produced for the X2000, so an authentic set can now be purchased. The cars are not cheap however, they have fully detailed interiors and a full six-car set (as originally delivered to SJ) will cost SEK 5225:- (which is about £520stg). There is a kit produced by Arduino (we think) for working traffic lights, which is suitable for pre-EU Sweden with the Amber-Green aspect available as an option! It is seen at www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZlOH5IhWvQ on YouTube. NMJ has opened a new "HOBBY SUPERMARKET" in Oslo, Norway, which they claim is the biggest hobby shop in Northern Europe, 745m2 with model trains and accessories, as well as non-railway models such as RC cars, boats and planes etc. The Address is Ensjøveien 7, 0655 OSLO, and they can be contacted at [email protected] or Telephone: +47 4017 3929. Their opening hours are Monday-Friday: 10-18 (Thursday 10-19), Saturday 10-16. _

Nürnberg 2014 As usual, our report from Nürnberg focuses on Swedish H0-scale, with a preference to analogue 2-rail—plus scenery, of course!

Artitec , more noted for their resin buildings, is bringing out a JLJ Q12 with “Flytande Syre” markings. Six of these wagons came to Sweden f rom Germany in 1951.

ESU’s T66 713 came and went, but rumours are rife for a new series; price about £390. Jeco is working on the Hg-loco for release during 2014 and the prototype model is in an advanced state. Jeco was also promoting the Z71 shunting

loco (effectively the same as the Z65 / Z70). The bistro car for the X2000 appeared recently, priced at 795:-, the 6-car set as wanted by the FLMJ is now out of reach! Jeco has also released the three different buffer stop types, none of which are the modern ‘heavy’ design, but all of which are particularly Swedish (similar but not identical to other types on the market). More from Jeco in scenery, below. Leni’s lek & hobby is to produce in conjunction with Modellhobby in Luleå, HectorRail’s 941 “Leone” and a pack of 4 Banverket wagons (from Roco). Märklin is producing a set of two container flats, each with two Volvo containers on, but we understand this set is not available as a Trix version! The Dm-loco as 1205+1206 is an interesting model because it is the earlier version of Roco’s model (below) but without the middle section (the Dm3)! The T44 will be produced in GC green livery and MTAS red. Their Rc-loco will appear as Rc2 009 in Tågab livery, though we cannot say if the body will be correct! New wagons include new versions of the 3-axle ore wagons, ‘Oms’ wagons, and older ‘Te’ wagons.

NMJ is proposing the TGOJ steam loco type ‘M3b,’ but at ten times the usual price of H0-scale r-t-r locomotives! More down to earth are models of NoHAB diesels, ‘Tågab’ TMY 101,

Page 10: FLMJ-Nytt - Adnalm · simplified system of operation without losing any of its charm, and this even extends to the signalling, which I sincerely hope ... The new double-track line

10 … FLMJ-Nytt

‘Railcare’ TMY 1150 and ‘Three T’ TMY 1110. There will also be ore wagons types LKAB ‘M2,’ SJ ‘M2,’ LKAB ‘Mas’ and SJ ‘Mas.’ There will also be new loads to go with the ‘Ljgns’ and ‘Kbps’ wagons. The ore wagons are to be produced in conjunction with Roco.

Roco is producing the Da in “Polar Express” livery, thus Tågkompaniet’s number 15. Another new version is the Dm3 in the earliest two-tone blue livery as 1205+1235+1206, named “Gloria,” and pictured in SLM 1991 (it ran in this livery for only a short time and even had a name change to “Sigrid”). The Rc-loco will appear as a pair in Green Cargo’s livery specially adapted for multiple working (Rc4 in pairs), and also

as Rc1 1007 in original livery (but we don’t know about the window surrounds or mirror types, etc). To go with the Tågkompaniet “Polar Express” Da-loco, there will be two sets of coaches one comprising SJ A7 and DB WL33; the other comprising panorama coach AFS and WL33. There is also a proposal for the ‘Tbis’ in Netrail livery.

Sudexpress T68 (the Vossloh Euro 4000) is now available for about £340. It is in RailCare’s white livery. Trix models are Märklin, but with a chassis for 2-rail use. The T44 will be produced in MTAS red. It is unclear which

Page 11: FLMJ-Nytt - Adnalm · simplified system of operation without losing any of its charm, and this even extends to the signalling, which I sincerely hope ... The new double-track line

FLMJ-Nytt … 11

other Märklin models will appear with Trix branding! Brekina has made (for sale via Tåg & Hobby in Luleå,) a VW T1a van in Pressbyrån livery. Jeco is producing a small station with out-house in resin, (a

similar idea to the model of Klippan offered by Heljan for many years). There is also a very Swedish kiosk (suggested as a Konsumbutik), and a three-family house (one of which we certainly hope will soon appear at Gärde on the FLMJ)! A more recent addition to the proposed models is a signalbox of typical Swedish design. The proposed Capitol bus will also be available as a kit, but neither of the buses are any closer to production.

NEO is advertising the Saab 99 in at least 4 colours. They are also still advertising the Volvo 780 as a new model in this scale. (If checking the NEO website, be careful, their range in 1:43 is much bigger and even when browsing the 1:87 section, some 1:43 models are shewn!)

SMJ (the Stockholm model railway club) released a beautiful model of the Volvo PV444 a couple of years ago; now they are to produce the Saab 92 (Saab’s first production car, now so lamented that a modern retro version has been suggested)! Like the Volvo, it will be a static model. _

Distraction 2013 By Adrian Allum

Whilst these pages give a very clear insight to my model railway interests, it is easy to overlook other interests, one of them being the London Underground—and modelling it in a very different scale! Whilst no H0-scale models exist of LU trains, there are a few in 00-scale, mostly of a kit nature; but the Acton Miniature Railway is actually 1:8 scale, and has a track gauge of 7¼” (184mm). And in this scale, it gives rides!

The LU carries more people every day than all of the train operators on the former British Rail network do collectively! Despite it’s name, only 42% of the network is actually underground, and whilst the operation of electric multiple units has made for a very slick operation, it was not like that in the beginning. But the history of London’s Underground is shewn at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden (London). In addition to the glass-box presentation style deployed at

Covent Garden, the LTM has a Depot at Acton, where everything of any real interest is stored, and this Depot is open to the public twice each year, when quite predictably, it is very busy! To offer some relief to encourage people to look outside, a miniature railway was built. Right from the start, the railway, now known as the Acton Miniature Railway imitated the LU theme; for its opening, two of the three trains were a 1938 Tube Stock train of the type used on the Bakerloo line, and a Met-Vick loco as used on the Metropolitan Railway. When I was appointed (voluntarily) as General Manager two years later, I recognised the importance of keeping to this theme, especially considering the location of the railway… ...And the theme included the signalling, one of my other main railway interests. LU signalling is quite easy to understand, especially if one already understands basic BR signalling. A red aspect means stop; a green aspect means go. A yellow aspect means expect to stop at next signal. One of the differences, however, is where the stop signal and the warning signal are combined. On BR, there would be one signal with the three colours. On LU, there would be two signals, a green-red over a green-yellow. The warning signal will shew no aspect of the stop signal above it is red. So, green over yellow means go, but expect to stop at the next signal; green over green means go and expect to go. The LU also has train stops, which when raised will hit a brake lever on a passing train causing the brakes to come on. Thus, they are raised when the signal is red. On the approach to termini, there are several along that last section of track

Page 14: FLMJ-Nytt - Adnalm · simplified system of operation without losing any of its charm, and this even extends to the signalling, which I sincerely hope ... The new double-track line

14 … FLMJ-Nytt

which go down after time delays, thus ensuring that the train has slowed down safely (introduced after the horrific Moorgate crash in 1975). This, however, gives a curious aspect on the signals, where the green aspect will shew as soon as the signal has been cleared, but the red will not go out until the train stop has been fully lowered; thus red and green together. The AMR does not have train stops (being only a miniature railway), but it does simulate the aspect associated with them! Most of the signalling is controlled from a lever frame of the Westinghouse style ‘N,’ recovered from Holborn (Piccadilly line), which has been adapted to suit the AMR’s operational requirements, and it is worked in an authentic manner. All of the signalling is interlocked so as to prevent accidents, and the 11 levers and five push-buttons require over 100 relays and well over 500m of internal cabling to achieve this.

Below (main): FLMJ Director Gneeral (AKA AMR General Manager) Adrian Allum working the lever frame in the AMR’s signal-cabin. The red lights on the track diagram shew locations of the trains. [Photo: A. Keeping.] Below (inset): The ½-second of red+green shewn when the signals are cleared, this aspect is, we believe, unique to the London Underground.

Page 15: FLMJ-Nytt - Adnalm · simplified system of operation without losing any of its charm, and this even extends to the signalling, which I sincerely hope ... The new double-track line

FLMJ-Nytt … 15

The first signals were made from (mostly) Westinghouse signal indicators recovered from various BR signalboxes, but these are being replaced by purpose-made signals. The shunt signals (a rotating white disc with a red horizontal bar) are also former signal indicators, but they are still in service until a suitable replacement can be found. Due to the nature of the way in which the railway is operated, all of the service points are spring operated, but the one to the carriage sidings is controlled with a car’s window-winder motor! Initially, a very basic interlocking system was provided in order to enable the railway to operate. However, the need to refit the entire locking system became more and more apparent, and the misfortune of discovering that exposed cabling had been vandalised, prompted the resignalling project that was to run for two years. With funding from the Museum and various sponsors (compared with the FLMJ’s lack of funding due to my very low salary), the AMR became the main

focus of my interests during 2013; but whilst this project continues, it has given me much to think about for the FLMJ’s signalling, and this is almost ready to be started (hopefully during the summer—if we actually get a summer this year)! _

Above: A Shunt signal cleared for moves to the left-most route, thus route number 1. [Photo: A. Janes.] Below: Some of the over 100 relays that the interlocking comprises.

DVD Reviews

Svenska Tåg 35 LEG Video; Citronvägen 4, SE-293 33 OLOFSTRÖM, Sweden. Web: www.legvideo.se DVD, 80 minutes, Swedish narration. © 2013. Colour.

Starting as usual with brief updates on all that is news on the Swedish railways, this program opens with a look at the new traffic to Motala, then the deployment of the new X55 (aka SJ3000), the new workshop at Falköping, and delivery of steam loco “Loke” to the ULJ. The line from Emmaboda to Karlskrona has been completely rebuilt and its opening is looked at in good detail, plus views of the work taking

place. Ma 828 was the celebrity locomotive for the day, and this is particularly interesting following the arrival of Jeco’s Ma loco at the FLMJ so see one in action! Another very interesting observation was the arrival of another heritage train with two railbuses and a UFV 2-axle trailer—we had been led to believe that no UFV trailers remained in preservation! Photographed for this journal, the new double-track line between Södertälje Hamn and Södertälje Centrum is now open, and due to reversal at the former, it is by default for right hand traffic. We shall look forward to our own observations there! Lots of X60 units are shewn (and one X10), but no special opening was evident! An Itino diesel unit is now used for the regular traffic along the Umeå to Lycksele line, and this route is looked at in some detail, including inside the train. The feature ends with an Inlandsbanan Y1 working along the same route.

SJK’s annual railtour featured a trip around Vänern with a selection of steam, diesel and electric traction. Many views are shewn of this train with its different locomotives (front and back), including some familiar footage along the routes taken by the “Kör-40” railtour which Adrian travelled on back in 1998! The Västervik to Hultsfred railway held a Narrow Gauge event with many extra trains, including the newly repainted UBF03up rail-trailer. This vehicle is in the earlier white and green livery instead of the more familiar orange and cream. It headed a 7-unit train from Västervik to Hultsfred, where the train was divided. There are also views of steam hauled trains and even some diesel workings with the Z4p locomotives. The program returns to the ULJ for the closing credits and views of loco BLJ 5 “Thor” at Bärby station.

This is a very brief cab-ride, from Trelleborg to Malmö in Tågab Rc2 009 (ex-ÖBB 1043), with an IORE in tow (complete with match trucks, wagons carrying the heavier bogies and a van full of components)! Before the journey, we see the train and other vehicles being unloaded from the ferry that has come in from Rostock in Germany. There were, at one time, three routes connecting Trelleborg with Malmö, and the surviving one is the most recent, and it is seen undergoing an upgrading in readiness for the reintroduction of a passenger train service. The English subtitles can be switched off, but not the narration! _

Volvo by NEO With so few models of Volvo (or Saab) cars available in H0-scale, one is always on the lookout for more. The NEO brand of metal models has recently been extended into 1:87 scale (down from their usual 1:43 scale), but the models, although nicely detailed, lack authenticity!

The Volvo 244DL arrived last year; nicely proportioned, but curiously with the back lights on the wrong way around (the orange indicators should be outermost and the reversing lights innermost)! The Volvo 262C arrived this year, beautiful in black, except that this model was never available in black! From new in 1977 they were silver with black vinyl roof. From late 1978 they were given the larger boot and wrap-round lights, front spoiler, alloy wheels, and they were gold all over. (A few others were made for the USA.) One in Sweden has seen some modifications and a repaint into white! So, as the black model was found at an affordable price, this is at the FLMJ as another modified version (let’s say that ours also has been retrofitted with a diesel engine because the petrol V6 was hopelessly unreliable)! It has all the other markings of the later version, apart from the vinyl roof! _
