This month’s column is brought to you by accident, sort of. There is an indoor trampoline park near my house that my son loves to go to and showcase his talents. On a couple of occasions I have laced up the special shoes and hit the deck literally with him. Not having really thought much about using a trampoline for cardiovascular exercise and the benefits, I decided to see what info was out there. The results are pretty impressive and there is no doubt it will increase your endurance on the track plus there is a major fun factor involved.

Astronauts in the weightlessness of space have used trampolines for years to keep themselves fit by exercising regularly while exerting stress on their bones and muscles to prevent bone and muscle degen-eration. This bone degeneration can occur quickly without the impor-tant force of gravity. Scientists believe reduced stress on bones may be responsible for the progressive bone loss seen in astronauts. This gradual degeneration also occurs to those who are confined to beds due to illness or old age.

Gravity is the key to why trampoline exercise can be one of the best forms of exercise. Rebounding is a unique exercise where weightless-ness is achieved at the top of each bounce while each upward bounce works against gravity producing forces greater then 2 – 3 times the force of gravity on a mini trampoline. These forces produce stress on parts of the body strengthening the muscles, bones and even the cells.

There are numerous health benefits associated withtrampoline exercise.

Weight lossA study from NASA found that a 150- pound individual spending

one-hour on a rebounder will burn more calories than the same person jogging for an hour. According to NASAs Journal of Applied Physiology it is 68% more efficient than jogging.

The combination of cardiovascular exercise and the strengthening of the muscles contribute to weight loss. As muscles strengthen they aid in the increase of the metabolism which helps burn off fat. The cardiovascular workout burns calories. By jumping on a trampoline for approximately 20 minutes 3 – 4 times a week significant weight loss can occur.

StressStress is a well known culprit in lowering immunity to disease. Within

a few minutes of being stressed adrenaline is released into the blood-stream causing your immune system to release lymphocytes. Adrena-line inhibits the ability of your white blood cells to fight of antigens. Corticosteroids are also known to suppress your immune response.

Trampoline exercise helps to release powerful hormones such as endorphins which can create a feel good feeling and a positive outlook. Exercise also helps to release tension in your abdominal muscles. Tension that can build up in your chest, jaw and back dissipates within minutes of gentle bouncing helping to relieve stress. Exercise helps to

maintain the production of adrenocorticotropic (ACTH). Adrenocortico-tropic is released to enable your body to adapt to stress.

A long term effect of trampoline exercise is a lowering of blood pres-sure and heart rate and a balance in hormonal output & cortisol levels.

ArthritisWhen toxins, wastes and inorganic substances accumulate, joints

are more likely to become inflamed and swollen. The more difficult the joint is to use, the less flexible it becomes, along with the muscles that enable the movement.

As you bounce more calcium is absorbed and deposited in your bones, making them stronger. The additional strengthening and toning of your muscles, ligaments and tendons, enhances the stability of your joints. When you bounce you gently stimulate the fluids surrounding your joins, encouraging lubrication of inflamed tissues and the cleans-ing of the wastes and toxins. The efficiency of your immune system is increased and elimination of urea is activated by better circulation. Bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and joints are strengthened, and your joints are nourished due to improved circulation.

Blood pressureA lack of exercise can cause your arteries to constrict. Also poor

food, stress, and too much salt and sugar. Start a regular exercise program to improve your circulation and blood pressure.

Having low blood pressure can in turn reduce the risk of heart dis-ease, strokes and kidney disease. Also when you bounce, blood and the oxygen it carries is directed away from inactive organs and mus-cles, to where it is required. Ensuring that your organs obtain enough oxygen is essential to them being able to function properly.

CholesterolBouncing stimulates the production of HDLs which carry the cho-

lesterol away, thinning your blood. If you have a high ratio of LDLs, bounce every day, with short bursts in between, to utilize the free fatty acids floating about in your bloodstream.

OsteoporosisBones can become thinner as a result of a loss of mineral content.

Your bones require nourishment and sustenance from oxygen and nutrients and also the stress impact on each cell to generate strength.

As you bounce you activate the flow of these nutrients to all bony tissues. Vital blood vessels within your bones are cleansed and wastes are removed. Gentle bouncing programs suited to your individual capacity will provide a healthy challenge to your bone cells, with a minimum strain to your skeletal structure.

FLMX: Hey Bob, everyone knows you as the man behind WMR Performance KTM but you have also been working very hard on a new project Nihilo Concepts. Can you tell us a little bit about how you came up with that name and what Nihilo does?Bob: Nihilo Concepts manu-factures innovative billet

products for KTM’s and soon all major brands of off road dirt bikes. We make billet ignition and clutch covers as well as case savers, chain adjusters, engine components and lots of other trick stuff. The com-pany is based out of our KTM Dealership and Race Shop in Stuart, Fl. The Nihilo division of the company is actually owned by my son Joe Brewster, who is also the GM at the dealership. Joe is a very talented machinist and has a passion for what he does. He has been making one-off billet parts for the race shop for many years even before he started Nihilo.

When we opened the KTM dealership in 2007 we immediately saw the opportunity to develop parts for KTM’s. We were racing and riding them ourselves so we knew what needed to be improved. As you know, we work with lots of top KTM amateur riders and have built a great relationship with the guys at KTM North America. Because of that relationship we were asked to help develop the new KTM SXS line of race bikes. Nihilo Concepts actually makes all the billet parts that come on the SXS line. I must say it was pretty cool when the first KTM 50 SXS was delivered to the shop in 2010.That was the first bike delivered with all our parts on it and was a mile stone for the company. Since then we have continued working with KTM to develop the 65 SXS and 85 SXS. All three bikes have been very successful and keep us pretty busy. KTM offers our parts in the KTM Power Parts catalog or you can get them directly from us. They don’t buy everything we make so there are lots of Nihilo parts you won’t see on the SXS’s. It’s best to check out the web site to see what’s new.

As far as how we came up with the name, the joke around the shop has always been that we can make something out of nothing. We take a chunk of aluminum and turn it into a sweet water pump impeller or a billet side cover, so we picked Nihilo. The name comes from the Latin Ex-Nihilo meaning “something from nothing”. We all liked the way it sounded so we went with it. It sounds kind of tropical you know being from Florida it seemed like a good fit with beaches, palm trees and all that.

FLMX: It seems that you always have the trickiest KTM’s anywhere and are now involved with KTM in the Off Road series. Is WMR / Nihilo a fully race supported team of KTM?Bob: Everyone in the shop loves building trick race bikes and having a full machine shop on site sure makes it a lot easier. We always try to come up with something new and keep our bikes looking fresh and on the cutting edge. It’s a lot of fun.

KTM’s are by far the most popular brand at the Hare Scrambles and Enduro’s, so it was natural for us to start supporting some Florida rid-ers in the FTR and GNCC events. We got the opportunity to work with a fast GNCC XC-1 Pro, Chris Bach, a few years ago when he was on KTM’s. Chris finished 5th that season and we were hooked. It has con-tinued to grow every year since then. Last year we expanded the team and supported another XC-1 Pro Nate Kanney, he finished in the top five also. WMR Off Road Racing has been the top finishing privateer team since we began competing in the GNCC’s. It’s been a great ex-perience and has opened up a lot of opportunities for WMR and Nihilo.

KTM has stepped up each year with support for the Team, I guess you could consider us a KTM Satellite Team. We get help with bikes and parts and work closely with the Factory. We are even helping the Fac-tory develop a few things through Nihilo Concepts. You will find Nihilo parts on the factory bikes if you look close.

For the 2012 season we have three riders on the Off Road team. Rory Mead from New Zealand, has done an awesome job finishing 3rd at River ranch, and getting his first win a few weeks ago in Indiana. Rory is currently 4th in the points and we feel he has a few more wins in him before the season is over. We also support another XC-1 Pro Steven Squire out of Indiana and Open “A” rider Chris Douglas from Ohio. The GNCC team is led by team manager George Pollard and race me-chanic Kristian Ortiz, or Stan as he’s known around the shop. These guys do an unbelievable job with the Off Road side traveling to all the GNCC’s in our team Sprinter and working seven days a week most of the time. It seems like a lot of work, but when your riders are up front battling with and sometimes beating the Factory guys it sure makes it worthwhile.

FLMX: You have been in this racing scene for a long time and have won many championships with riders at many different levels, how do you keep going?Bob: I just love this sport. I’ve been around dirt bikes and MX since the sixties and have never lost the passion for it. Another thing that keeps me going is the ability to work with my two sons every day. Joe, who I mentioned before, and my older son Bob who through his hard

work, has really allowed Nihilo to grow into what it is today. Both my sons grew up racing Motocross here in Florida and love the sport as much as I do. Having the dealership and Nihilo Concepts has been a great way for them to stay involved in the industry that they both love so much.

The other thing that keeps me going is the great crew of guys here at the shop. Rob Fox is Nihilo’s Product Development manager and is the one responsible for all the stuff you see on Face Book, Twitter, the web site, and everywhere else. Rob has done a great job building

the Nihilo brand and is the guy to talk to about sponsorship. Kristian Ortiz, who I mentioned before, is our Off Road Race team mechanic as well as lead mechanic for our top Amateur Motocross team. He has brought home many National Titles, most recently two from the World Mini’s in Vegas with rider Brock Papi. I would consider him one of the best young race mechanics in the country. Nick McEntee is also an excellent technician in the WMR service department. On the weekends he wrenches for BTO Sport’s Jason Thomas on the Supercross and Outdoor National circuit. Nick is also someone who works seven days a week, flying out on Thursday for the Pro races and returning on Mon-day to do it all over again. Marcio Mayorga heads up our Sales Depart-ment at the dealership and is the guy to call if you’re looking for a new KTM. Chase Rajkowski works the front counter and fills in wherever he is needed. Every one that works here at WMR/Nihilo has a real pas-sion for riding motorcycles which shows in their energy and attitude. When you call the shop you will always get someone that loves riding as much as you do and will take pride in delivering the best experience you will find anywhere. With a great group of guys like this it’s easy to stay motivated. Everyone is having a blast and looks forward to com-ing to work every day.

FLMX: We see the top pros in the Off Road series and top amateur MX’ers running custom Nihilo parts, can anyone get them?Bob: For sure! That is what it’s all about. We race every weekend to

learn what is needed on the track, then come back to the shop and de-velop new ways to make that happen. Everything you see on our bikes is available to the public, unless of course we are still testing. The goal is to make parts that nobody else makes, to develop things that will improve your bike, and give you that extra advantage against the competition. The bikes have gotten really good over the last few years, however there is always room for improvement. Because we race at the highest levels every week, we get to see where the problems are and then find ways to fix them. We don’t want to be a typical aftermarket company pumping out the same stuff. We want to stand out as a true race shop that is on the cutting edge of motocross technology.

FLMX: Ashley, you have came a long way since the last time I interviewed you. The last time was just after you won your first title at LL when you were on 85’s! Congratulations on all of your success and taking the sport of Womans MX to an all new level!Ashley: Oh wow, you make me seem so old!! It has been a long time but I still remember that LL race like it just happened! FLMX: Let’s start off with some basics. How old are you now, where do you live and how long have you been riding and rac-ing?Ashley: I’m 21 and I live in St. Augustine Florida and have been racing for about 14 years now since I was 7. FLMX: If everyone doesn’t know, you are deaf. Most of us could not even imagine riding MX without being able to hear. Describe how you know what’s going on with the bike and how you learned to ride.Ashley: My dad wanted me to be able to ride like everyone else, not have a special bike or anything so he taught me how to “feel” the vibrations of the bike so I would know when to shift. Now it is just second nature to me!

FLMX: How and why did you get started in riding?Ashley: My dad used to race, when I was only 3 he brought me to a SX race and I fell in love with it! I wanted him to buy me a bike that day!

FLMX: You really excelled quickly in the sport and before you knew it you were a LL champion and then kept winning titles. What were your highlights of your Amateur career?Ashley: Definitely the highlight of my amateur career was win-ning LL! There is nothing better in the amateurs than to win that race! I also race in the boys supermini class when I was 15 and I finished 11th overall I was pretty stoked about that!

FLMX: What year did you move up to pro? Can you go through the years you have been pro now and fill us in on your accom-plishments?Ashley: I became a pro in 2007. I tried to do it the same as the boys did so the next race for the women after LL that year was Steel City. That was also the last round for the women. I raced that race as my first pro race. Then in 2008 that was my first

full year. It was my rookie year and I won the championship! I won a championship again in 2009 and I also won X games gold in 2009 and 2010! I won another WMX championship again in 2011, I didn’t get to race X games that year because I crashed and was knocked out so they wouldn’t let me race.

FLMX: You have brought MX to the mainstream for woman. You have been featured in Nationally run commercials, advertising and magazines. What have been some of the biggest main-stream media ventures you have been featured in and what kind of response have you got?Ashley: Oh yes, that was always my goal to have women’s moto more widely recognized! I was just recently featured in Vogue magazine, I think that was a huge deal because that is a media area that no motocrosser has ever ventured into before! I was on a CBS television special called Courage in Sports. CNN did a travel tip spot on all of the traveling I do, and also a Women in Sports piece. I have been on a couple of different things for ESPN and being on X Games is huge TV coverage. Of course the Red Bull commercial was great! People notice me now in airports because of that commercial haha! FLMX: What is the feeling like to be such a tremendous role model for young girls around the country?Ashley: It is a good feeling and I am happy that women/girls look up to me but sometimes it does get a little overwhelming! I am lucky to be blessed with the skills that I have.

FLMX: What do you try to express to your fans to help them?Ashley: I just want everyone to believe in themselves and to always follow their dreams and never give up! FLMX: You have started working with Timmy Ferry this past year to help with your riding and training. What have you been work-ing on and how is Timmy? Ashley: Timmy is great to work with I am so glad he is part of my program now! He changed up a lot of my training now compared to what I used to do but it has been a lot of fun!

FLMX: What are the goals for 2012?Ashley: 2012 will be my last year racing the outdoor national


series. I plan to just go out and have a great time! I hope to win a Gold medal again at X games!

FLMX: What are your goals for the rest of your riding career?Ashley: I want to keep riding and having fun! I am really looking forward to the fact that ESPN is growing X Games larger and I hope I can keep helping women in moto!

FLMX: It looks like its going to be Jessica Patterson, Tarah Geiger and yourself going at it again this year for the title. All 3 of you are Florida girls, why do you think Florida has the top 3 girls in the Coun-try?Ashley: Haha I guess I never thought of it that way! I guess it is like the guys too, Fla weather makes you tough! We are prepared for anything!

FLMX: Have you ever thought of what you want to do after you finish up racing? Ashley: I probably would like to stay in the industry, writing maybe or videos or maybe teaching girls how to ride! FLMX: Good luck this year in the Outdoors, any parting words and who would you like to thank?Ashley: Thank you!! Thanks to God and my family. Thanks to everyone who has helped me in my career and for all of the people who have stood by me!

The 2012 Dade City MX Championship Series is fast underway and 7 round in. Summer is here with temperatures soaring into the 90’s all day, it would make for a long hot day and long night of racing. With many riders choosing to start the day out at 9am for the riding school that lasts until 12:30 and then with practice starting up at 3:00 its a very long day of riding. The Vortex Lites class would be the featured class tonight with a solid layout. RJ Hampshire won the first 3 Main Events so far this year and was looking to make it 4. Hampshire had problems with his Honda as he had to hunt for a 250f to borrow for the night.

In timed practice it was Austin Diperna coming out on top on his Honda with almost a 2 second gap on the rest of the field. Hampshire actually did not even get a time for practice and would have last gate pick com-ing into the heat races. Diperna would come out strong in the first heat

HAMPSHIRE PERFECT THRU 4race pulling the holeshot and gapping the field. He would have some pressure from DJ Macfarlane at the end but it was Diperna with the win. Hampshire was the man in heat race 2 and made it a easy heat race win.

In the Main Event it was Austin Diperna looking for the perfect night! He jumped out the a great start and pulled the holeshot in front of Hamp-shire. Diperna and Hampshire would pull a gap on lap one, but the Diperna made a big mistake and you could tell he lost his momentum. Hamsphire would make his way past him in the next couple of laps and then pull a sizable lead. Diperna then got heavy pressure from the rest of the field which included DJ Macfarlane and Justin Gant. Those two would find their way past Diperna to get on the podium. Hampshire took home his 4th main event of the year staying perfect!

TRASOLINI SAILS AT SUNSHINEThe 2012 Florida Series is underway as the 5th round of the Series traveled to St. Petersburg to Sunshine MX. Frank Valente had the track prepped and ready as some of the top riders in Florida came to do bat-tle. Raimundo Trasolini brought over his #41 Kawasaki to play and race the A classes. Trasolini would go perfect on the day winning every moto in the 250 A and 450 A classes. He would beat out Kyle Jacob in both classes and Russell Clay who was 3rd in 450 A. Russell Clay did win the Plus 25 class on his Kawasaki traveling North from Okeechobee.

Bradford Young, who is one of the top young up and coming riders in Florida had a great Sunday aboard his #124 Kawasaki 250f. Young took the win in the 250 B class over Taylor Ditzian and Nathan An-derson. He then backed it up in the Youth 12-15 class by winning the overall over Stephen Culleny and Raymond Johnson. Another impres-sive rider was Sydhar La Roche out of Miami. Roche would win the

450 B class over Colton Mcleod and Evan Walker. Then take another overall in the Youth 16-24 class this time over Taylor Ditzian and Matt Karwat. Karwat was the top C rider on the day. Not losing a moto on his #17 Kawasaki in both the 250 C and 450 C divisions. In the 250 class Austin Pare was second and Raymond Johnson 3rd. In the 450 C Karwat took the win over Patrick Flynn and Austin Pare.

Some other top notables were Devin Chester winning the Supermini class over Ty Casey and Logan Boye. Brinsley Dyess was the fastest woman on the day once again, winning the Women 12 & Up class over Amanda Grether. Tyler More cleaned up in the 50 class by winning the Oil and 4-6 class. Cole Bradford won 2 overalls in the 65 classes, the Open and the 6-9. Dan Zullo was also a 2 time winner in the Plus 35 and Plus 40 class.

2012 started out as probably the best year of SX we could have ever imagined. With the list of top riders, Stewart, Villopoto, Dungey, Reed, Canard, Windham, Weimer, Brayton, Millsaps... the list goes on and on! Unfortunately the top 6 guys all got hurt! This year was unreal with the injuries! We have never seen the top 6 riders in our sport all end up getting hurt at one point of the year and have to miss out races, end a season or put them out of the championship hunt. One rider who waited to the end of the year was Villopoto who was so strong on his Kawasaki and would defend his championship and win the title. Only to blow out his knee at his home town race in Seattle to end his series and his MX series.

All of the titles were settled before the Finale at Vegas, Barcia and Tomac won the East and West championships for the Geico Honda team, the first year that team has ever swept both titles of Mitch Paytons Pro Circuit Kawasaki team. With not much on the line but bragging rights at the final race it was all about having fun and making some $$$! Starting off the night they would jump straight into the Lites East Coast Main event. Barcia and Roczen would do battle but it was Barcia coming out with the win over Roczen and Baggett. Malcolm Stewart had his best ride of the season finishing 4th on his KTM. The Geico Honda team kept it rolling as the West Main Event came off nextl. Eli Tomac was unstoppable taking the win over Dean Wilson and Wil Hahn.

They then took the top riders from each main event and had the infa-mous Davey Coombs Sr East/West Shootout. This is the first time all year we get to see these riders go head to head to see who is the fast-est SX racer in the 250cc class. Once again it was the Geico Honda team demolishing the fields as they went 1-2 with Justin Barcia tak-ing home the win over Eli Tomac. Rockstart Suzukis Martin Davalos rounded out the podium in 3rd. Barcia took full advantage of his final year on the 250cc bikes by defending his championship and winning the shootout. He will move up to the 450cc class next year, most likely on Factoy Honda next to Trey Canard.

With the title already settled, the only thing to decide in the 450cc class would be who would finish 2nd and 3rd in the title. Davi Millsaps held the #2 spot with Dungey 12 points behind. Dungey knew he would have to win and hope Davi had a bad night. In the main event it was Mike Allessi with the holeshot, but Ryan Dungey would get past him on lap one on his Red Bull KTM and flying out to a big lead. Making it a boring night for the win, it was all down to the race for second. A

great battle brewed between Alessi, Metcalfe and Jake Weimer. The rider on the move though was Millsaps who had a fantastic 2nd half of the season. He would get past all three of those riders to finish second and secure 2nd in the points on the title, the best he has ever done. Factory Hondas Justin Brayton rounded out the podium.

DADE CITY 12 HOUR RACE3RD ANNUAL • 5/6/12 • SIX12SPORTS.COM RACE REPORT

Motocross is hard, usually you ride maybe 5 times a day. Including a practice and 4 motos if you double class. But when you race its usually only 5 to 6 laps, or 10 to 12 minutes per race. Now imagine riding 20 to 30 minute motos all day, but you get to do around 7 of those! That’s what all of the competitors sign up for at the 12 Hour Race of Dade City. This was the 3rd year the race has ran, one of Randy Yoho’s ideas to support a charity. Each team is comprised of 5 riders per team who each ride for as long as they can each moto and then hand off their transponder to their teammate. You can ride for 5 minutes or 45, it all depends on how your team wants to set it up. Basically who ever ends with the most laps completed, wins!

This year the Charity was IRS, Injured Rider Support. A new charity that helps out injured riders and families in time of need. Its a great char-ity which helps out the riders directly here in our riding area. This year 9 teams signed up to do battle on the entire track at Dade City, which includes the rough back sand section! It is a very long day, which seems to almost never end. It’s hot, the track is rough and you never seem like you get a break! That never slowed down the teams as they keep going all day!

The teams were comprised of top former pros, current pros, vet guys all the way down to 85 and 65 riders. The racers would face it all, from exhaustion, dehydration, bikes braking, blisters and of course being absolutely beat from riding for so long! The riders did get a hour break for lunch which was provided by the Huss Family. A huge Thank You to Barneys for always providing a place for people to cool off between their motos and any help that they could provide. The big winners were Team Ferry as they completed an absurd amount of laps, over 200! Timmy Ferry, Matt Boni, Matt Karwat, Eric Goodson and Ryan Jessip made up the unstoppable team as they won by 17 laps. But the big winner here was the Charity who raised over $6,000! Thanks for everyone who made it out and hopefully you can put a team together for next year.
