POLLINATING PLANTS PROMOTE MINDFULNESSZonolite Park’s new pollinator garden invites guests to practice mindfulness and “Bee Here Now”

Last April 22 (Earth Day), dozens of volunteers came together to install more than 400

pollinating plants at the entrance to Zonolite Park. Designed by Matt Sussman of Tunnell & Tunnell Landscape Architects, varieties planted include Eastern Columbine, Blue and Yellow Wild Indigo, Bee Balm, Little Bluestem, Joe Pye Weed and more. Funds for the pollinator garden were donated by Arnie Silverman, Kathleen Walker, and Michael Phillips (owners of Floataway Community) and matched by a small change grant from Park Pride.

Nickel Bottom (a “Friends of Zonolite Park” group) plans to develop programming, signage, and amenity improvements in the park with a focus on mindfulness. “With businesses like Atlanta Soto Zen Center and The Institute for Love and Light so nearby,” says Nickel Bottom volunteer Gerlinda Grimes, “mindfulness was a natural inspiration for

this project.” Future park programming may include a free mindfulness-based fitness series, and Nickel Bottom volunteers are also talking with local boy scout troops about installing a picnic shelter in the park meadow. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the pollinator garden. To sign up, please email: [email protected].

FLOATAWAYFACESA big welcome to our newest community members.

BOITIPSWit and wisdom from Floataway property manager Jan McCurry’s more emotionally-evolved alter-ego, “Boi.”

My step daughter Vivienne and I have a new favorite pasttime: geocaching. Geocaching is a relatively

new pursuit, based on the 160-year-old game of letterboxing. Letterboxers hid small, weatherproof containers in publicly accessible places and offered clues about how to find them. Using orienteering and puzzle-solving, other Letterbox ers hunted these treasures. The finder would leave a stamp in the makers log, and would imprint the maker’s stamp (found inside the letterbox) into their own notebooks.

Geochaching works much the same way, except geocachers use mobile phones and GPS coordinates, rather than obscure, whispered clues, to find the “cache.” Vivienne and I use a free iPhone app to locate our caches that contain small, fun surprises, which we take and replace with items of our own (a sharpie for a yo-yo, etc.) Hernan and I have also been hunting. Imagine our delight when we discovered two caches in Zonolite Park!
