TRANSCRIPT
In Transit is the name of the magazine and of the special edition of the art magazine Para-bol, which is published once a year. Both publications celebrate five years of the Hospiz’s art centre, an initiative of Florian and Ursula Werner in St. Christoph am Arlberg. Over the last five years they have succeeded in making art a highly recognisable feature of all the hotel’s activities, thereby giving the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel a truly unique character. While the magazine features, as usual, all the artistic activities and innovations, as well as the Artists in Residence for the 2012/13 season, the art magazine Parabol takes up the global theme of „on the road“ which is one that lies behind many aspects of the hotel, its location and people.
In Transit symbolically combines Florian Werner’s activities as a hotelier with his passionate involvement in art. As a result, the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel, including all its artistic activities, has itself become a place of transition. It lies part way along an Alpine pass and for centuries has been a place of hospitality and shelter for people traversing the pass. Using the vehicle of art, Florian Werner taps into the constant reflective surface of this place, which his guests and visitors experience as an Alpine place of passage and of heteronomy, as well as a place of safety and hospitality. In order to appreciate this place and its conditions, it is important to experience irritations and incidents, such as artistic interventions which invade spaces, redefine places, provoke an exchange of glances and open up surprising perspectives. It is precisely this aspect of art which comes into play at the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel. It is incor-porated into the structure of the hotel in the form of permanent artistic interventions and an artistic legacy, while new tales continue to be told in the long corridors of the hotel. This place is constantly changing, always on the move.
In the debate over art, Florian Werner also finds himself in a process of transition, which has led him and section.a from just being passionate about art to having a passionate, professional approach to it. This inspires him to continually initiate new and surprising projects which demonstrate courage and vision, whether it is on or even in the mountain.

Rafael Neff’s photographic work continues to focus on places which are characterised by their architectural and functional features – operatic stages and baroque libraries, or fa-mous wine cellars. His visually precise series of photographs dissects the places portrayed in the search for what is important. In his series of portraits of famous wine cellars, such as Château Lafite-Rothschild, the artist plays skilfully with the media of symmetry and the precise orchestration of light in order to make the spatial dimensions visible and compre-hensible and, as a result, to convey the special nature of the place.

Cristina Fiorenza’s painting focuses on people in their everyday environment and, in the process, she helps ornamentation find a new Renaissance. The dresses worn by her silent protagonists, the carpets, floors and wallpapers in the interiors portrayed, are rich in de-tailed patterns. These set pieces stand out from the background like collages and demand their own separate position within the overall visual structure. In contrast to this is the way she reduces everything to the purely functional in the backgrounds of her work. Sober, bleak and stereotypical estate architecture stands out in the form of soulless layers of floors, windows and balconies. Cristina Fiorenza’s creations tell us about this incongruity, and about isolation and loneliness.

Maria Anwander, H.A.I.R. award winning artist in 2012, seeks through her artistic work to provoke a consistent debate about the way art operates, the way it is standardised and regulated. She intervenes in this system, sometimes in a very ironic manner, in order to get round it or expose it. So, over several years, she has stolen name plates from international museums and art institutions, interpreted them in her own artistic style and displayed them in an exhibition. She blew a kiss to the Museum of Modern Art in New York when she broke the rules and left a trace of lipstick behind in one of the exhibition rooms. Methods of appropriation and the question of authorship of an artwork are constant the-mes in her work.

Lena Lapschina’s complex artistic work is defi-ned by its preoccupation with the interaction between situations in individuals’ daily lives and their effect and relevance to society. Her conceptual approach takes the form of photo-graphic and video works. On her travels the artist films and photographs situations of daily life, which she mixes with and alienates from scenes from the world of the media. There are always very close and intimate aspects and mo-ments of private observation, which she deals with publicly in the context of her art. The work she has created for the stairwell of the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel deals graphically with the hotel’s location and history in an ironic manner.

In her artistic work, Kirsten Helfrich occupies herself with themes involving beauty and tran-sience. In her work the artist reacts to ideals and that dominate our society but negate its reality, by means of various media. Whether it be the beauty myth of the fashion magazines or the protective idea of the statue of a saint, Kirsten Helfrich reveals the superficiality of these phe-nomena in her artistic transformation.
Isabel Haase’s artistic work is also characterised by the use of various media. Through photo-graphy, video, objects and installations, she ex-plores themes such as the relationship between public and private spaces, just as she includes objects of daily life. In addition to fine, clear aesthetics, her work also subliminally radiates a great deal of discomfort and unrest. Through subtle changes, everyday objects are given new, unexpected meanings that confuse and amuse viewers.

Franziskus Wendels deals with the theme of ”light“. He is especially interested in artificial light in the context of the city. The brightly lit city is to him a symbol of our ”Enlightened
times” with all their ambivalence. He has crea-ted three installations for the Hospiz Galerie St. Christoph. In the expansive rooms of the basement boiler room, the observer sees things that at first glance seem to have been placed the-re arbitrarily. However, when the lights go out, these become a landscape with enormous spa-tial depth. These works subsist on the tension between the images of day and night. The same can be said for a series of graphics. two stories entering a dialogue with one another are told on eight sheets.

The artist, Christian Hutzinger, has developed a distinctive visual language in his painting, col-lages and spatial intervention installations. His preferred colours vary within a palette of vivid shades and find formal expression through rigid compliance with themes. In a world of signs and pictograms, the artist has created over time his own artistic vocabulary in order to tell his story. The simple shapes, ellipses and capsules against monochrome backgrounds act virtually as substitutes, as synonyms for events. The play of colours, shapes and sizes are the parameters Hutzinger works within. Spatial interventions, the painted interconnection between images and spaces, open a discourse with the viewer and establish an immediate relationship with their surroundings.

In his installations Alfredo Barsuglia questions the permanence of glamour and celebrity cul-ture. What are the mechanisms for accepting beauty, how do they operate and via which media are they conveyed and reinforced? In the process Barsuglia plays with stylistic elements from fairy tales as well as with erotic references and allusions to the world of show business.
Some of his extensive installations, which are in the trompe l’oeil tradition, are portraits. In these Barsuglia does not depict individuals, but examples of a social condition. He is interested in the daily rituals and presents these in relation to celebrity culture – the things we are all accus-tomed to do naturally and which, for exactly that reason, escape our notice.

Kay Walkowiak’s artistic exhibits focus on the real world of objects, which he contrasts at the same time very clearly through his model-like approach. His works are precise elaborations of clearly formulated ideas with a high level of abstraction, which constantly removes them from their functionality and thus they become artistic artefacts. The exhibits always remain endowed with the cultural knowledge of the viewer, and this knowledge charges the object with individual meaning.

In her drawings and paintings, Cony Theis con-centrates on external, visible signs and manifes-tations of human identity, such as tattoos. Her small format works are based on an interplay of drawing and watercolour on thin, transpa-rent paper. They seem like intimate snapshots of daily situations, but never give the feeling of voyeurism. As they develop, many of her works take on a theatrical, three-dimensional character.

Federico Vivalrelli’s artistic experience is de-fined through experiments with different eve-ryday materials which he integrates into his pictorial work. Because he often uses organic material, deterioration and the moment of change are important elements in his work. On the one hand, these materials have a luminous effect. On the other, they create a tense relation-ship between amorphous and precise, repetitive composition.

Yvonne Schweidtmann’s pictorial work covers a broad range in terms of both theme and form. Its motifs range from abstract to figurative re-presentations. In all her work she uses a glazed and very fast form of paint application. By using this method of working, uncontrollable moments increasingly develop during the pain-ting process, a factor which the artist considers to be an important aspect of her work.

Ruben Aubrecht’s artistic work systematically grapples with the concept and understanding of reality. The choice of medium also plays a role in this questioning. So, for example, he con-sistently tests the boundaries of the video medi-um. The results arising from this confrontation are light and cryptic in nature and toy with our expectations, without having to deliver on them. Another constant element in his artistic work, in which he collaborates more and more with Maria Anwander, is its involvement with the system of art and its conditions.

Stefano Cagol’s artistic work is characterised by the use of different media, such as video, photography and artistic installation, while, at the same time, reflecting these media, their function in society and political significance in the content. So, for example, in his video work ”Vampa“ he deals with the symbolic meaning of the American flag, which he subjects to dif-ferent digital manipulations and generates an-thropomorphic forms. As a result, he questions at a visual level the power of media images and identity.

The youngest participant in this year’s Artist in Residence programme, Jakob Kasimir, deals in his photographic work with the different forms of representing and staging the human body. He tries to use as many different experimental forms as possible, without having to commit himself in the process. To accompany the still image, he repeatedly uses the video medium, which has a documentary function, but is also often relieved of this duty and exists as a stand-alone work.

Ruth Anderwald’s and Leonhard Grond’s ar-tistic work is defined by tangible places and experiences which find their expression in pho-tographic and cinematic works. Their evocative approach, their touch and transcription in the true sense of the word are based on fundamen-tal research. They emerge time and again like lightning flashes with political implications which are critical of society. At the same time, the other view, the reversal of observational re-lationships, is an important constant in their self-conception as artists.

Ida-Marie Corell’s preferred artistic medium and material to be processed is the plastic bag in all its shapes and manifestations. In her per-formances, actors are dressed in plastic bags and in her exhibitions the artist fills entire halls with them. Ida-Marie Corell has also applied herself scientifically to the phenomenon of this ma-terial in book form. Naturally, consumer and social criticism form part of her work, but it is her interest in the everyday material itself which drives her to use it again and again.

Wendelin Pressl’s artistic works can be seen as experimental designs in which the artist re-joins fragments of reality in an individual way. In do-ing so, he evokes new levels of meaning which do not have a qualifying effect, but always relate to the local circumstances and political or social relationships. Thus he creates, for example, a new community space in Vienna’s 6th district with his tribune-like open space installation ”Revue“, which he uses to refer to the forgotten story of the Jewish cabaret artist Fritz Grün-baum who was murdered by the Nazis.

ON SITE, Florian Werner is expanding his Residency Programme and will invite an artist (male or female) every year, who will photographically portray the Hotel, seen from the interior and the exterior, thus illust-rating the stories it has to tell and at the same time showing its distinctive characteristics. The objective is to create an on-going artistic docu-mentation of this extraordinary locale.

Bianca Regl’s pictorial works begin with details, which she arranges in an interplay of formulati-on and allusion in the pictorial space and execu-tes on the canvas with technical perfection. In her close-ups of objects, much remains hidden in the darkness of the background. Fragments and incompleteness develop from them. It is only these motifs which open up the actual, much larger, space of associations, strengthened by the self-contained clarity which characterises Bianca Regl’s work.

In her artistic work, Angelika Böck deals with cultural phenomena of perception which are questioned through the use of different artistic media. Many of her works manifest themselves in open space and are based on dialogue situa-tions with people at a particular place or event. They often deal with questions of trans-cultural transfer and post-colonial systems resulting from, among other things, the artist’s commute between Germany and Malaysia.

Katherina Olschbaur’s paintings are defined by the conflict with the constructions of reali-ty and the question of how to represent this. Fragments of images continually interweave themselves into unexpected spatial situations. Surfaces, criss-crossing lines, abrupt changes of perspective, and the play with depth and close-ness create ambiguous paintings which develop a large space of associations. The artist’s involve-ment with theatrical and associated directorial issues continually emerges as a tableau in her works.

Leander Kresse’s pictorial work is defined by the motif of streaks, which appear in different forms and shapes. These linear pictorial structu-res are the result of repeated layers of paint and the subsequent exposure of deeper layers. The result is a spatial, almost plastic, depth which has a defining effect on the picture and, at the same time, can be an autonomous structure. It oscillates between the tangible image and its abstraction.

Andreas Lau’s pictorial works oscillate between the poles of legibility and encoding of the subject depicted. The artist encodes the image through his style of painting in order to, as he says himself, „make the pictorial visible“ and to continually sound out the pictorial possibilities. Quite deliberately he uses a selection of images that are characterised by the medium (he often uses celebrities as models), which he alienates even further, deconstructs and encodes in the course of the painting process in order to expose an unequivocal legibility.

Maria Bussmann’s drawings are pictorial trans-lations of philosophical and literary texts. A graduate in philosophy, she is inspired by works such as Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, Spinoza’s Ethics or books by Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Her drawings create a symbiosis of structural elements and personal, associative motifs which she connects to differentiated, complex and unique images.
