FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP,~ PURPOSE

founded 1949

The Florida Artist Group was incorporated as a non-profit organization of practicing artists who had gained recognition nationally or state-wide and whose work would contribute significantly to its exhibitions. The purpose of the group is to stimulate attainment of the highest standards of creative art within the State of Florida.

ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a members' exhibition each year in a different Florida city. Its education and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, films and exhibits.

In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the members of the organization more closely together.

JURIED SHOWS The annual exhibition is juried for awards. The organization always brings in an eminent juror who is primarily associated with art administration, education or a painter or sculptor of national repute. Past locations of exhibitions have included the Ringling Museum, Cummer Gallery of Art, the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami Metropolitan Museum and the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many other outstanding galleries and art centers.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I would like to thank Elizabeth Clement, President, and her board for

all their dedication and hard work the last three years. It certainly showed up in stimulating symposiums and exciting exhibitions. It will be difficult shoes to fill.

Next year will be a landmark for the Florida Artist Group ... our 50th Anniversary. We will emphasize the distinguished past of FL.A.G., particularly the traveling shows and most importantly, our future plans and expectations. With your input and support, our Golden Anniversary will be memorable.

University College at Oneonta, New York, in Museum Administration through the Cooperstown Graduate Programs. He is listed in Who's Who in America - 1999, Who's Who in the South and Southwest- 1999, and Who's Who in American Art- 1998.

JUROR'S STATEMENT A juried exhibition is really about two very diverse elements. One is that the show is a snapshot in time. It reveals a particular mo

ment in the artist's life which may reflect a peak in artistic juices or a low moment. Retrospective exhibitions of great artists that they painted or sculpted on their very best days and their very worst. Not ail Picassos are equal.

The other element about juried shows is courage. Courage both on the part of the artist to put forward their work to be critiqued and the courage of the juror to understand this snapshot he or she has been asked to view and critically discriminate. The artist is asked to risk, be judged and possibly be rewarded. The judge knows nothing of the artist's body of work for a contextual reference. He or she must act and react instinctively to the snapshot presented in but a few moments of viewing -and subjective viewing.

The process, though flawed, seeks to raise the level of quality for all artists. This show was particularly chaiienging because of the high quality of works of art selected across the board. I am honored to have been asked to jury this 49th Annual Exhibition. It is assuring to know that the visual arts are alive and wen in Florida through the Florida Artist Group.
