Though paintings of animals in landscape were Potter's specialty, this is the largest apart from his single life-size equestrian portrait.

“The Piebald Horse” 1650-1654 oil on canvas 502 mm (19.76 in) x 451 mm (17.76 in)

A gray, spotted horse stands, turning its head slightly to suggest its alertness to its surroundings. Some argue the owner of the horse had this painting ordered and you can see the owners home in the background. Others say that the horse is untethered and is roaming freely.

C. Biography of the artist (2 paragraphs min.) Few details are known of Potter's life. He was born in Enkhuizen, Netherlands. In 1628 his family moved to Leiden, and in 1631 to Amsterdam, where young Paulus studied painting with his father. Potter was not only a painter but also etched pieces of art. He came from a family of painters, his father was painter Pieter Potter. He is celebrated chiefly for his paintings of animals. Animals appear prominently in all of Potter s works, sometimes singly but usually in small groups silhouetted against the sky, or in greater numbers with peasant figures and rustic buildings in an extensive landscape. Potter created portraits of animals, making them his picture's focus, not just a backdrop for human action. Although he had a life size painting of “The Young Bull” his most successful paintings are mostly small. D. Set:The students will be shown a photograph of a group of children playing in the park. The

students will then be asked to analyze the photograph and come up with ideas that the children in the photograph may be doing, thinking, planning, and feeling. After analyzing the photo the students will hold a discussion about the different stories created by their classmates and compare all the different things they all thought all from looking at the same photograph.

Teaching Strategies:a. After the set portion is completed the teacher will begin to describe the life of Paulus

Potter to the students by using a PowerPoint presentation that contains some information and various art works created by the artist.

b. The teacher will then introduce the three pieces of art work that the students will be analyzing in order to develop their narratives. The paintings that the students will be using are “A Spaniel”, “The Young Bull”, and “The Piebald Horse”

c. After a brief explanation of the different paintings, the teacher will then ask the students to pick one painting and create a narrative that revolved around the painting they chose. Their narratives must be completed as if they were in that time period, for example they can’t mention cell phones, cars, or any other sort of electronic devices. The key in the lesson is to ensure that the students use their imagination to develop a story about the artwork they chose.

Assessment of Learning:The assessment of learning would be the student’s ability to complete a hand written narrative using the painting of their choice as inspiration in writing what they believe is happening in the painting using vocabulary terms from the lesson.

Closure:As closure, the students will be asked to volunteer to come to the front of the classroom and share their stories with the class. After a hand full of students have shared their stories, the teacher will ask the students if they can all have different views and thoughts from looking at the same piece of art.
