The Florence

InstituteLocated on Mill Street inToxteth, Liverpool, this historicbut neglected building standsas a memorial of the work ofSir Bernard Hall a formerMayer of Liverpool and localbusiness man. He originally

built it in memory of hisdaughter who tragically died ata young age. It was designedas a place of recreation andsoon became an institute forboys. It served the youngworking and unemployed inthe area.

My design will be

influenced by the conceptof free flowing ribbondesign and unravellingspirals. These effects willenable the space to flowwithout any limits.

As the spiral opens it willembrace and appreciate thespace, however the spirals canclose in to create privacy andenclosure which is required fora GP practice.

This concept will create a sense of calm andtranquillity which is needed for the space.

e ground floor has purposelybeen designed as an open planspace that incorporates bringingthe outside nature in to thebuilding to create a sense of

wellness and appreciation of ourenvironment.The layouts of the floors are clear

and functional. With the core beingthe entrance/ground floor, routesare easy and logical with the GPand staff rooms kept to one side. Iaimed to keep my design as openplan as possible but as a keyrequirement to a Health Centre, itwas important to maintaincomfortable and private spaces.

A caf is located on the groundfloor that opens outside toenable an inviting welcomingopen space.Circular seating in the waiting

First FloorA welcoming and comfortable atmospherehas been creatively designed to providehealthcare with a difference and a refuge forthe local community to ease stress andenhance positive health.The first floor

contains three minioperational rooms, a

seating/meeting areaand a storage roomfor GP/Nursesequipment. The useof an overhanging

balcony across theground floorenhances the open

plan space and addsto the relaxedatmosphere.

The Walnut flooring isaccompanied by calmingcolours such as apple greenthat compliments thesurrounding nature pictures.
