October Meeting

Pat Feighery lectured us on proper uniforms and continues, saying the flotilla kicked off the Division Board’s initiative to have all members of Division 3 in proper uniforms by January 1, 2009. Let’s not let this program cool off for lack of consistent application of uniform guidelines. At last’s months meeting all in attendance were asked to stand up and inspect ach others uniforms, this drill will continue into the future. Until your uniform is complete and proper, you will be welcome at meetings in appropriate civilian attire. If you have any uniform needs or questions, please contact myself or Tom Thayer and we will make every effort to provide you with the information that you need. There still is plenty of time between now and the first of the year to meet the Division’s Goal. Are you in proper uniform?

Due to time constraints, Neil Hennessy was only able to give an introduction to the very important PEEP program. This will be our blueprint for going forward making improvements that will have a positive effect on nearly all Auxiliary departments The rest of the presentation will be given at the November meeting

This is from Marie Thompson. Our mooring buoy is missing. If sighted, please report location.

SIZE DOES MATTER – WHEN CHOOSING A

LIFE JACKET There’s no doubt that life jackets save lives. In the United States an average of nine people a day die as a result of drowning - deaths that could have been prevented. But a life jacket that does not fit properly can put a person at risk of drowning. Proper fit is imperative for safety on the water. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has a few tips to follow when choosing a life jacket.

• • • Choose only a U.S. Coast Guard(USCG) approved life jacket, and the correct size for the weight of the person. The USCG stamp of approval, size, whether it is for a child or an adult, and appropriate weight of the wearer should be listed inside the jacket. A person’s chest size

and stomach size may come into play when selecting the right life jacket.

• • • Use the “touchdown” test to see if your life jacket fits properly; Lift your arms above your head as if calling a touchdown. The chest portion of the jacket should not touch your chin when you look left, right or over your shoulder. If the jacket passes this test, it most likely fits. If possible try it out in shallow water. The life jacket should not ride up on your body. However, ride-up may happen if your stomach is larger than your chest.

• • • Weigh a child and measure for chest size under the arms before shopping for a child’s life jacket. A properly fitting jacket should be snug but not tight.

From the Helm We need to have a moment of silence in tribute to a fellow Flotilla Auxiliarist Thomas C. O’Brien Member Number 1219314. Thomas C. O’Brien died recently after an illness. Details will be provided when they are available. November is an important month for the Flotilla because it elects its new Bridge at the November Auxiliary meeting. Qualified candidates have stepped up to the challenge of leadership. Their leadership will depend on the work of the staff and the efforts of the Flotilla membership. The recent pot luck supper was outstanding. I would like to thank Nancy and Jim Godden and their committee members for making the affair a super event. Another important reminder about the year end ceremony, the Change of Watch (COW) planned for Sunday January 11, 2009. The COW will be held in the same location that was used last year. This promises to be a spectacular Dinner Ceremony. You can reserve your spot at the ceremony by sending your check to the FSO-FN Neil Hennessey. As the year end holidays are approaching this is a reminder that members can contribute special delights such as delicious cookies for holiday delivery to the Coasties at the Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale. If you have any questions please get in touch with Irene Azzarito. To all members in the boat crew program-- the Holiday parades are coming: The Winterfest Fort Lauderdale Parade, the Pompano Parade, and the Boca Raton Parade. If you are interested in participating in the parades please contact Bill Bartley, our FSO-OP.

The Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is scheduled for Thursday October 30, 2008 through Monday November 3, 2008. Flotilla 36 will cover the Public Affairs Booth on Thursday October 30, 2008. The assignments for October 30, 2008 can be divided into two hour segments starting at 10:00 AM. I expect that booth coverage can be discontinued at 4:00 P.M. Uniform for this PA event will be Tropical Blue Long with Garrison Cap. Hope to see you there. Thanks for all your help and support.

2008 Flotilla 36 Holiday Toy Drive Please leave toy donations at the base by Saturday, Dec. 6. Toys will go to the Achievement Centers for Children & Families (formerly known as the Community Child Care Center) of Delray Beach.

DIVISION 3 ELECTIONS: Flotilla 3-6 is happy to Congratulate our newly elected Bridge. Our own Pat Feighery will be our new Division Commander ( Note the new title) effective January 1, 2009. Our friend, Ed Duda, from Flotilla 3-4 will be Division Vice Commander. The Division Change of Watch will be on Saturday Evening, December 20, 2008 at the Pompano Beach ELKS Club. You should receive an invitation soon. If you are not on a boat, participating in the Boca Raton Christmas Boat Parade, please plan to attend and support Pat, Ed and the remainder of the Division Staff.

PREPARING FOR THE COMING YEAR: Not to assume anything prior to the Flotilla Elections on November 6, but, Marie and I are working on the Flotilla Staff positions for 2009.. There will be some changes. We would like your assistance in identifying yourself or others with skills, talent, experience or desire to serve as a Flotilla Staff Officer or Assistant Flotilla Staff Officer or serve on a committee to serve the Flotilla. One of the tenants of the “PEEP” Program is to get more members involved. This will benefit the future leadership of the Flotilla and will benefit the productivity of the Flotilla

now. Please do not wait for someone to ask you, please let us know of your desires. Futhermore, we have broad shoulders and can take criticism and suggestions. Please feel free to communicate with us or any Staff Officer. WINDING DOWN 2008: Please ensure that you do not have expiring qualifications. Having been there, I can assure you that it is much easier to maintain your qualifications than it is to regain those qualifications. See Tom Kegan, if you have any questions. VETERAN’S DAY: Tuesday, November 11 at the Boca Raton Cemetery. A wonderful celebration of our Veteran’s, sponsored by the City of Boca Raton. Starts at 10 A.M. Come early, if you want a seat in the tent. BOCA RATON HOLIDAY STREET PARADE: Richie Dunn is putting together the Flotilla 3-6 entry in the parade. Please let Richie know of your ideas and participation. Starts on South Federal Hwy and proceeds North. Starts about 6 P.M. on Wednesday, December 10, 2008. BOCA RATON HOLIDAY BOAT PARADE: FSO-OPS Bill Bartley is the person to see. We need numerous parade and patrol vessels for the parade that is revitalized with corporate sponsorships, offering $10,000 in prizes, with no entry fee. The City would like our help in recruiting large vessels that are in the Holiday Spirit. Captain’s meeting is mandatory. It will start about 6 P.M. Saturday, December 20 at the C-15 canal and heads South to Hillsboro Blvd. Bridge. Till next month……. “The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” –Groucho Marx

Late Breaking News

Mark David the Silver Bagpiper passed away Wednesday Oct. 29 at 10:05 PM. at the Hospice & Palliative Care Unit at Pinecrest Delray. Since he basically has no family here I am handling arrangements which are going to be very basic. His wishes were to be cremated and his ashes scattered on Molasses Reef in the Florida Keys, where Mark and I spend hours diving and snorkeling. No local service is planned.

Mark was a volunteer member of the Delray Beach Police Marine patrol and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 36.

Anyone wishing to contribute to a fantastic organization, Hospice of Palm Beach on behalf of Mark may do so. This organization really helped out Mark through this event.

The last formal AUXCOM Class, a complete course review, was held on 10/29. Four students are scheduled to take the exam on 11/19, to be proctored by Len Schwartz. We are bridging directly into the new course, Telecommunications Qualification un Wednesday nights at 1900 through November (except for exam night above). Individuals currently “Comms” eligible are encouraged, but not required to meet the qualification standard. The tasks which require proficiency in this standard are the hands on type of tasks, basic radio operator or watchstander duties. These are things that many of us profess to know, but have never been tested or qualified for in the past. This is your chance to do just that, so come to class and we will help you through it.

Life Jackets, Continued from page 7

• • Ensure a life jacket for an infant or child has a crotch strap to help keep the life jacket on, an oversized float collar to help keep the head out of the water and a grab loop for easier water rescue. All straps should be intact and fastened at all times.

So what is the safest life jacket? In terms of risk of drowning, the safest life jacket is the one you’re willing to wear! There are many good choices to keep safe on the water. Some of the choices are a better for certain situations than others, and therefore the choices are explained in the "Think Safe" life jacket pamphlet that is sold with every US Coast Guard approved life jacket. By reading the pamphlet, you can understand how to safely have fun on the water. For more information about life jacket types visit http://www.safeboatingcampaign.net/types.htm or http://www.boatingsidekicks.com/lifejackets.htm. So what about the cost, aren’t life jackets expensive? Just keep in mind that no one thinks about the cost when they are in the water! The value of a life jacket could be priceless. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the United States Coast Guard. Created by an Act of Congress in 1939, the Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions, except military and direct law enforcement actions.
