Who manufactures these special components for the solar circuit? Our SUN & WIND ENERGY market overview provides the answer. I f a solar system were merely a simple circuit in which the thermal medium runs around unhinder- ed to transfer heat to the water, then everything would be perfectly straightforward. Unfortunately, the paths of the fluid are in many cases winding and complex. To ensure that the solar fluid always takes the most efficient route, and thus to make optimum use of the transported heat, numerous valves are positioned along the way: safety valves, balancing valves, three-way control valves, shut-off valves and air vents all contribute to a trouble-free process. The heating installation trade already knows most of those valves from conventional heating sys- tems. In a solar circuit, however, valves are required to withstand significantly higher temperatures. Fur- thermore, solar thermal systems are usually com- bined with a second heat source. Here, too, valves are needed to achieve optimum interconnection of the different heating systems and to charge the stratified storage tank. In response to the demand for valves specifical- ly designed for hot water preparation and space heating support via solar systems, most companies have launched a separate solar product line (see table on page 55, with technical details following in the tables from page 56 ff). The market leaders for solar valves are Italian and Spanish manufacturers such as Caleffi, Giacomini, Orkli and Tiemme Raccorderie. In North and Central Europe, it is the Swedish company Esbe, Taconova from Switzerland and Watts Industries Germany which are especially well known for their comprehensive product range. The recently restructured German company TA Heimeier GmbH also covers the full spectrum of so- lar accessories. Valves from TA and Heimeier and expansion vessels from Swiss manufacturer Pneumatex have been united under one roof. One company new to the SampWE market overview in 2011 is the Spanish manufacturer Industrias Ibaionda After supplying storage tanks to the solar sector for the past ten years Ibaionda unveiled a seshyries of expansion vessels for solar systems (see table on page 60) at Intersolar Europe 2011 in Munich Sunex SA from Poland is also included in the overshyview for the first time this year Alongside collectors and solar pump units the company offers a diversity of valve products for example balancing and shutshyoff valves as well as bleed valves and air separators Global Water Solutions Ltd attracted attention to itshyself at ISH in Frankfurt in March The British company has been producing expansion vessels for the sector for five years

Controlling the flow

How many planes are permitted to land on the runways of a particular airport each day This decision is made by the air traffic controller in accordance with the size of the airport the number of planes wishing to land and the prevailing weather The balancing valves in a solar system (see table on page 56) perform a very similar function They regulate the flow rate of the solar fluid in the individual branches of a solar circuit in response to the current system status and ambient conditions Flow sensors acquire the volumetric flow rate for example for yield measurements

Another category of valves serves to ensure that the medium is able to flow unhindered along the chosen path air separators and vents (see table on page 59) which relieve potential blockages caused by air bubbles in the piping Air separators are installed where the most air accumulates namely at the highest point of a system In the case of a solar system that means on the roof Usually air venting is performed afshyter filling and then at regular maintenance intervals The system is then closed with a shutshyoff valve (see table on page 56) so that no solar fluid can evaporate at high temperatures The Dutch company Spirotech takes a different approach A roofshymounted air separashytor allows continuous venting and closes automaticalshyly if the temperature exceeds a defined threshold (see SampWE 92010 page 98) In many cases an air separashytor is also installed at the pump unit where it similarshyly provides for continuous venting

Poor air venting can lead to extensive damage to a solar system If air accumulates in the system the pump is no longer able to circulate the solar fluid At the same time the fluid itself will age to a greater exshytent and the system will be more likely to suffer corshyrosion From the scientific perspective there is still

models Watts Industries hopes that this will help to enhance the efficiency of solar thermal systems

According to the manufacturer FlowTurn is able to measure flow rates up to 40 Lmin The product designers in Landau have additionally refined the sensors such that they now also re-turn exact measurements for very low flow rates below 1 Lmin

Sferatec has added a new electronically controlled valve for proportional and linear flow regulation into its portfolio The flow rate is ad-justed remotely by way of a ball valve with which it is possible to set the desired flow rate for a particular solar temperature The compa-ny believes this to be an essential trend more sensors for flow monitoring and control and thus for regulation of the overall solar system

Taking the right turn

Three-way control valves represent a new category in this yearrsquos SampWE overview Zone valves from six com-panies are compared in the table on page 56 Control valves for solar circuits must be capable of handling correspondingly higher temperatures The figures quoted by the manufacturers lie between 100 and 160 degC Belimo FAR Orkli Solar Tiemme and Watts Industries all make explicit mention of a motor con-troller for their three-way valves The zone valve VTD300 from Esbe is fitted with a thermostat for a particular zone temperature The valve reacts to the

inflowing fluid and changes the direction of the outflow accordingly

broad scope for optimisation with regard to the removal of air and other gases from solar sysshytems The technical solubility coefficients of various gases in solar fluids are yet to be invesshytigated and documented Determination of these coefficients a series of practical experishyments and the modelling of gas transport in soshylar systems are thus current topics for a reshysearch project at the Institute for Energy Techshynology of TU Dresden and the Laboratory of Nuclear Energy Systems at ETH Zurich The first results from tests performed with an indoor

system have already been presented With solar flushyids in contrast to water as the thermal medium there was apparently no or very little deaeration effect to be achieved with microbubble separators and air vents Influence on the level of gases in the fluid was rather to be attributed to degassing facilities For the case of largeshyscale systems therefore the scientists have framed the hypothesis that deaeration could even be left out altogether Testing under real outdoor condishytions began in June 2011 It remains to be seen whether this hypothesis will prove tenable

According to the manufacturer FlowTurn is able to measure flow rates up to 40 Lmin The product designers in Landau have additionally refined the sensors such that they now also re-turn exact measurements for very low flow rates below 1 Lmin

Sferatec has added a new electronically controlled valve for proportional and linear flow regulation into its portfolio The flow rate is ad-justed remotely by way of a ball valve with which it is possible to set the desired flow rate for a particular solar temperature The compa-ny believes this to be an essential trend more sensors for flow monitoring and control and thus for regulation of the overall solar system

Taking the right turn

Three-way control valves represent a new category in this yearrsquos SampWE overview Zone valves from six com-panies are compared in the table on page 56 Control valves for solar circuits must be capable of handling correspondingly higher temperatures The figures quoted by the manufacturers lie between 100 and 160 degC Belimo FAR Orkli Solar Tiemme and Watts Industries all make explicit mention of a motor con-troller for their three-way valves The zone valve VTD300 from Esbe is fitted with a thermostat for a particular zone temperature The valve reacts to the

inflowing fluid and changes the direction of the outflow accordingly

system have already been presented With solar flushyids in contrast to water as the thermal medium there was apparently no or very little deaeration effect to be achieved with microbubble separators and air vents Influence on the level of gases in the fluid was rather to be attributed to degassing facilities For the case of largeshyscale systems therefore the scientists have framed the hypothesis that deaeration could even be left out altogether Testing under real outdoor condishytions began in June 2011 It remains to be seen whether this hypothesis will prove tenable

system have already been presented With solar flushyids in contrast to water as the thermal medium there was apparently no or very little deaeration effect to be achieved with microbubble separators and air vents Influence on the level of gases in the fluid was rather to be attributed to degassing facilities For the case of largeshyscale systems therefore the scientists have framed the hypothesis that deaeration could even be left out altogether Testing under real outdoor condishytions began in June 2011 It remains to be seen whether this hypothesis will prove tenable
