FLOWER FELTING – from ‘Feltmaking and Wool Magic’ by Jorie Johnson.

MATERIALS YOU NEED :-A plastic bag (thin, for veggies),old towel, small pebble.-Net (larger than the size of felt you want to make, bridal voile is best), apron, cling film, elastic band.-Bubble Wrap, Cotton ties/string for tying up the roll of felt.-Soap, grater or liquid soap (ecover delicates) -Old plastic milk bottle with holes punched into the top-Broom handle/rolling pin or pipe lagging tube.-Felt in the colours you like. Bamboo mat, brooch pin.

Wrap some tendrils of wool or yarn securely and vertically around the pebble to create the flower pistils. If they don’t stay on in the felting process, don’t worry – you can always needle felt them or sew them afterwards.

1.Lay out six small petal shapes that are large enough to wrap around the

pebble. You can use several colours here.

2.Think about your stem and allow a piece of wool that’s thick and long enough. If you twist the wool 1.5 times, you will get an idea of

the finished felted thickness. 3. Wrap four of the ‘petals’ tightly around the stone. Moisten the wool with felting solution between layers to squeeze out any air.You can also use the plastic bag here to help your hands glide over the surface. Rub with your hands until everything is holding together – but not fully felted, (more than pre – felt).

4. Meanwhile, roll your stem in the bamboo mat about fifty times. Make sure you cover one end with cling film and an elastic band to

keep it dry

5. Attach the fluffy end (which has just had cling film on) of the stem to the felted pebble and wrap the final two petals around the pebble, pinching the top of the stem tightly with your fingers.6. Rub until the felt feels firm, surviving the ‘pinch’ test.7. Slit the pebble carefully with sharp scissors into 5 or 6 petals.

8.Carefully remove the pebble from the felt.9. Keep rubbing with your plastic bag until you’re really satisfied with the result. Use scissors to snip away any frayed edges. You can try rolling the whole thing a few times in the bamboo mat too.10 . When finished, dry the flower naturally and add (glue or

sewing is better) a brooch pin
