Week #4

Good Morning

Good morning it’s time to rise.Stand up and wipe your sleepy eyes.Reach and stretch for the sky, Hold your hands way up high.Bend your body and touch the ground.Stand up straight, now turn around.Point to your eyes, point to your nose.Jump up and down and touch your toes.Clap your hands, stomp your feet.Let’s start the day, now find your seat.

Start the Day with a Smile

This is the way we start the day, Start the day, start the day. This is the way we start the day, So early in the morning.

First we smile and shake a hand, Shake a hand, shake a hand.First we smile and shake a hand, So early in the morning.

Then we sit down quietly, Quietly, quietly. Then we sit down quietly, So early in the morning.

We listen very carefully, Carefully, carefully. We listen very carefully, So early in the morning.

Week #12

Albuquerque Turkey

Albuquerque is a turkey. And he’s feathered and he’s fine. And he wobbles and he gobblesAnd he’s absolutely mine. He’s the best pet that you can get.Better than a dog or cat. He’s my Albuquerque turkeyAnd I’m awfully proud of that.He once told me, very frankly, He preferred to be my pet, Not the main course at my dinner, And I told him not to fret. And my Albuquerque turkeyIs so happy in his bed.‘Cause for our Thanksgiving dinner, We had egg foo young instead.

Week #13

A Thanksgiving Dinner

Take a turkey, stuff it fat. Some of this and some of that.Get some turnips, peel them well, Cook a big squash in its shell.

Now potatoes, big and white.Mash till they are soft and light.Cranberries, so tart and sweet, With the turkey we must eat.

Pickles-yes- and then, oh my! For a dessert, a pumpkin pie.Golden brown and spicy sweet. What a fin Thanksgiving treat!

Week #17

Day Before Christmas

We have been helping with the cakeAnd licking out the pan And wrapping up our packages As neatly as we can.We have hung our stockings up Beside the open grate, And now there’s nothing more to do Except To Wait.

Week #18

Santa

Santa’s sometimes called Kris Kringle. His merry eyes—oh how they twinkle. His nose and cheeks are red as a rose, Which match all his bright red clothes.Wearing a white beard and boots of black. He’s a jolly elf carrying his sack. When he laughs, he “Ho, ho, hos,”From the tip of his hat to the end of his nose.

Week #19

January

JanuaryNow is here – A fine new start.

The snow comes down In the dark of night. When we awakeThe world is white.

In January When there’s snow, We get our sledsAnd away we go.

Page 20: Fluency Poems to Print

Week #20

The Snowman One day we built a snowman, We built him out of snow; You should have seen how fine he was, All white from top to toe.

We poured some water over him, To freeze his legs and ears; And when we went indoors to bed, We thought he’d last for years.

But, in the night a warmer kindOf wind began to blow; And Jack Frost cried and ran away, And with him went the snow.

When we went out next morning To bid our friend “Good Day”There wasn’t any snowman there…He’d melted right away!

I’m a little snowflake white and roundI don’t make a sound as I fall to the ground. When you look out your window you will shout, “I’m putting on my mittens and going out!”

Week #22

The Faces of the Clock

The Big hand is busy, But the Small Hand has power. The large one counts the minutes. But the Little One names the hour.

When both hands stand at the top together, It’s sure to be Twelve O’clock. But whetherThat’s twelve at noon or twelve at night Depends on if it’s dark or light.

Page 23: Fluency Poems to Print

Week #23

The Second of February

There’s only the day the whole long year, That I hope and pray the sun won’t appear. The second of February, you all know, The groundhog goes searching for his shadow. If he should find it, the story is told, We’ll have six more weeks of winter’s cold. But if it is cloudy, his shadow’s not there, There’ll soon be warm weather and days will be fair.So please, Mr. Sun, for just this one day.Find a big dark cloud – and stay away!

Page 24: Fluency Poems to Print

Week #24

Valentine’s Day

If I could be the postman For just one single time, I’d choose to carry ValentinesSo lovely and so fine.I would not mind the heavy load, Or mind my tired feet.If I could scatter happinessAll up and down the street.

Page 25: Fluency Poems to Print

Week #25

Page 26: Fluency Poems to Print

Week #26

The Cocoon I found a cocoon That a caterpillar made, Fastened to a leafHanging in the shade. He barely had roomTo wiggle or way, Like me zipped up In my sleeping bag.

I looked each timeThat I passed his way, But he never budgedUntil just today.Something happened! He wagged and wiggledAnd then climbed out And carefully jiggledSmall wet wingsThat grew as they dried. He’d turned to a butterflyInside!

Page 27: Fluency Poems to Print

Week #27

Spider Webs The spider weaves a sticky web To capture bugs to eat. What keeps the spider’s sticky web From sticking to her feet?

Spider webs are very trickyBecause not all the strands are sticky.Unlike the passing hapless fly, The spider knows which strands are dry.

But if she accidentally standsupon one of the sticky strands, She still would not get stuck, you see— Her oily body slides off free.

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, How you would roam! Forests and beachesWere your private home.Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, How you could eat! Dining on plant lifeOr dining on meat.

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, Where did you go?Once you were giants, And how you did grow! Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, What made you die?So many guesses, But no one’s sure why.

On many spring days I wish that I Could be a kite flying in the sky.I would climb high toward the sun And chase the clouds.
