In 1996, the owners of the AlholmensKraft started developing a new power plant scheme for the UPM-Kymmene Pietarsaari mills with the following main goals:• investment shall be made on an off-
balance sheet basis• assetisation of the existing bark-
fired back-pressure power plant• a low production cost shall be
achieved by large-size and optimised thermal cycle
• high reliability and operational flex-ibility
• energy pricing shall be fully trans-parent to all shareholders
• the plant shall be environmentally sound and based on efficient use of biomass fuels.
The main responsibility for the pro-ject development was given to PVO Group which selected Pöyry as the principal external consultant.
The boiler is a circulating fluidized bed boiler with natural circulation and reheating. The boiler is designed to generate 194 kg/s of steam, at 165 bar(a) and 545oC, and reheated steam at 37 bar(a) and 545oC with bark, saw dust, wood waste, commercial biofuel and peat (coal firing option exists). The boiler can burn minor amounts of RDF as well.
Heavy fuel oil is used during star-tups as an auxiliary fuel. The steam turbine is a three-casing extraction condensing turbine with district heat-ing and process steam supply.
The condenser is cooled with sea water. The design of the turbine and condenser also allows operation in pure condensing mode without heat extractions.
The new plant will be operated in parallel with the old bark-fired power plant of the mill, which serves as a back-up and peaking unit. In addition to the Alholmens Kraft power plant, the pulp and paper mill is also sup-plied with steam and power from the black liquor recovery power plant owned by UPM-Kymmene.
