Introduction Glowing trees Vs street lights Functionality Implementation Advantages Summary

Page 4: Fluorescent Plant

Engineering nature to sustain our needs is exactly what fluorescent plant aims to do.

It is a glow-in-the-dark plant made using fluorescents, phosphorescent or quinine.

Quinine is naturally occurring substance taken from the bark of a tree known as cinchona.

It could possibly replace traditional lighting and perhaps even create glow-in-the-dark trees that would replace the common street light.

Street lights are an important part of our urban infrastructure — they light our way home and make the roads safe at night.

But what if we could create natural street lights that don’t need electricity to power them?

The idea of using glowing trees to replace street lights is an ingenious one.

It will not only save on electricity costs, provide oxygen and scenic beauty, but it could also greatly reduce light pollution in major cities.

Page 6: Fluorescent Plant

A tree becomes fluorescent when absorbed light photons release photons of another wavelength.

This happens when the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range and the triggered emission is in the visible spectrum, a substance will glow under black light or simply will glow in the dark.

First, prepare glowing water and glowing paint

using water+fluorescent and paint+fluorescent,

respectively. Then pour the fluorescent water all around the

bottom of tree. So that the roots can take up that

water and pass it on towards the leaves to make

them glow in the dark. After that spray the leaves with fluorescent paint

and also apply paint to some parts of the tree trunk

to amplify the effect.

Electricity cost can be saved. It provides scenic beauty. It produces oxygen in the day. It helps to reduce light pollution due to street lights in major

cities. It helps with the global warming issue too. Its mostly natural so cost of implementation will be very low. A bulb which runs on electricity for 12 hours will consume 720

watt/hr. But instead a fluorescent powder costs 3$ per kg, which can

be used to make fluorescent paint and water for 20 trees. It will reduce deforestation as we will plant many new trees.

We are cutting down trees to facilitate ourselves but now we can engineer them in a way that they are beneficial and also can be adjusted with our urban lifestyle.

In addition, to that they become useful during the night too. We also get to accommodate nature in our society. This idea also helps to reduce many of the main global

problems due to deforestation. And a point to be noted is that we have to use trees with

leaves of light shade. This will help in achieving a better result.
