egister now for F08!

F08Dear ColleagueIndustrial Minerals Events is privileged to host what has become the world’s only gathering of people in the business of producing and using fluorspar. Chosen by popular request at F07, the city of Montreal has special significance in the commercial history of fluorspar and the wider fluorine-based industries. The Montreal Protocol, hailed as the world’s single most successful international agreement, is approaching its twentieth anniversary. Canada, a major fluorspar consuming nation, is also set to become a major producer. After adjusting to the 1980s rise of China as the world’s leading source of low cost fluorspar and the ramifications of the 1989 Montreal Protocol, while freight rates were generally in the doldrums, the post millennia years could not have been more unsettled. Speakers that are recognised authorities in their fields from organisations that are well known to the industry have been selected to stimulate discussion on the key issues facing the sector. Their presentations will not only be informative but, crucially, they are relevant to today’s challenges facing fluorspar producers and users alike. If you have executive responsibilities in fluorspar, producing it or using it, then on 15-17 October 2008 the place to be is the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Montreal! Don’t delay, join over 150 of your peers for high level networking opportunities in Montreal. See the programme for more information and to register please complete the booking form on the back of the brochure. We look forward to meeting you there.

17.10 Close of day one

12.25-14.00 Lunch14.00-14.35 Developments in fluorocarbon HFC-134a and

HCFC-22 markets – China and the worldRay Will, Senior Consultant, SRI Consulting, San Francisco, USAEurope and Japan, having ratified both the Montréal and Kyoto Protocols, show the world’s least growth in fluorocarbon consumption. The USA, while having signed but not ratified the Kyoto Protocol, is not restricted from using HFCs and consumption is growing. At the same time China’s growing demand for conventional refrigeration, air conditioning, and fluoropolymer production creates a very different paradigm: China is starting up HCFC-22 and HFC-134a plants at the same time Europe is closing them. Continuously monitoring these markets for approaching twenty years, Ray Will is in an unrivalled position to make sense of what is driving the arbitrage in the different regions of the globe and what the portents for the future might be.

14.35-15.10 Sulphur and sulphuric acid supply and prices – what hydrofluoric acid and fluorochemicals producers can expect near and medium term Robert Boyd, Partner, PentaSul Inc., Houston, USA and Barry Clarke, Partner, PentaSul Inc, Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.Once in oversupply, sulphur and sulphuric acid demand across many applications in the mineral processing and chemicals manufacturing industries is intense with the cost of these workhorse chemicals having rocketed during the past year. Price is one thing but actual availability has been reported as an issue affecting the fluorine chemicals industry as well as other minerals-based industries. Dedicated to following these markets for over two decades, PentaSul partners, Boyd and Clarke, examine the causes, price trends, and what the future holds.

15.10-15.40 Refreshment and networking break15.40-16.50 Trends in the aluminium and steel industries –

implications for aluminium fluoride and metspar James King, Independent Consultant, Corbridge, UKTrends in the volume and industry structure for aluminium and steel are analysed and conclusions drawn on what impact they will have for aluminium fluoride and metallurgical grade fluorspar.

16.50-17.10 Cost pressures in the aluminium fluoride industry and impact on cost competitiveness Ashok Shinh, Principal Consultant, CRU Group, London, UKRecent increases in the cost of energy and raw materials have placed a severe burden on aluminium fluoride producers and the aluminium industry as a whole. These have altered the economic parameters of the industry that is obliged to cope in a changed world. Industry specialist, Ashok Shinh, having followed these markets for a number of years examines the state of the industry and how it will need to respond.

17.10-17.30 Chairman’s closing remarks: Looking ahead to 2009Gerry Clarke, Conference Chairman & Consultant Editor, Industrial Minerals

17.30 Close of conference

Friday 17 October 2008 Day Two: Market Trends: Responding to pressures on all fronts09.00-09.20 Chairman’s opening remarks:

Interesting times for fluorspar – here to stay!Gerry Clarke, Conference Chairman & Consultant Editor, Industrial Minerals

09.20-09.55 Ocean Freight -- its role and effects in fluorspar trade Carl Lee, Vice President Strategic Planning, Fednav Ltd, Montréal, CanadaAfter the dramatic freight rate rises in the past two to three years how do shipping costs compare between the different fluorspar producing and consuming locations of the world? Are there any ways to mitigate rising freight costs and what are the portents for the future? Strategist, Carl Lee, is at the top of one of the world’s leading shipping organisations and well placed to address these critical questions in depth.

09.55-10.30 An overview of the acidspar supply demand balanceJudith Chegwidden, Managing Director, Roskill Information Services Ltd, London and Peter Huxtable, Consultant, Huxtable Associates, UK Leading minerals information provider, Roskill, combined with minerals industry specialist, Huxtable Associates, bring together the results of current research into acidspar supply and demand. The paper will examine security of supply given continuing constraints on exports from China, the restrictions on sulphuric acid supply and forecast availability from current and new mine operations. The authors will review historical demand from the chemical and aluminium sector and present possible demand scenarios to 2015.

10.30-11.15 Refreshment and networking break11.15-11.50 Fluorine derivatives and European regulations

– impact on the businessVeronique Garny, Cefic Director – Fluorinated Chemicals, European Chemical Industry Council, Brussels, BelgiumThe European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), representing over 400 individual, corporate and association members involved in the chemicals industry, is in an excellent position to critically assess the fluorine chemicals business in Europe and the pressures it is facing from both regulatory and market origins. Veronique Garny will present details about current constraints and opportunities driven by legislation, whether European or international. The status of concerns facing the industry along with reflection on business changes that have occurred in recent years provides an ideal platform upon which to assess what will happen in the future.

11:50-12.25 Synthetic anhydrite – an added value concept for producers of hydrofluoric acid and aluminium fluorideHelmut Knopp, Owner & Managing Director and Kevin Knopp, Purchasing Manager, Knopp Engineering GmbH, Albertshofen, GermanyIn the European market Knopp Engineering has, over the past 15 years, pioneered the use of by-product anhydrite from hydrofluoric acid manufacture in self levelling screed applications. Achievement of a high quality SLS standard with synthetic anhydrite has, during the past five years, extended its application to the varying conditions of different climatic regimes. Helmut and Kevin Knopp will demonstrate in detail this environmentally attractive added-value solution from one source – taking raw by-product anhydrite to make anhydrite binder and then self levelling screed for final delivery to the building site – an example of making more profit whilst improving environmental protection.
