Dear Parents and Friends of Valley Catholic School,

Welcome to this year’s Valley Catholic Gala, “Fly Me to the Moon. “This evening provides a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together and support all that is Valley Catholic School.

We are very grateful for all of the hard work that goes into making this night possible. Parent volunteers, teachers, students and Foundation staff have done an exemplary job. They care about the experience of each student at Valley Catholic and have used their precious time to procure and package items, enter raffle ticket sales, write appealing catalog descriptions and brainstorm ways to merchandise the wonderfully decorated rooms we’ve wandered through tonight. It is great to see and experience the reward of all their hard work tonight.

We also want to thank all of you who are attending this event. We know that it is through your support that our Gala is successful each and every year. Thank you for purchasing tickets, bidding on items, and coming together as a community to support Valley Catholic School. Tonight, we encourage you to bid enthusiastically, keeping in mind that our students benefit from your generosity.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” – W.B. Yeats

There are 994 students at Valley Catholic. It’s hard to tell which ones rely on financial aid. These students raise their hands in the classroom, score winning baskets and display their pieces of art in the hallway. They are a vital component of Valley Catholic School, and each one brings unique gifts to our community.

Since the founding of our school, the Sisters have devoted themselves to meeting the needs of others. Tonight you can continue their legacy by making a generous gift to “Light a Fire” assisting VCS families who otherwise cannot afford to have their children attend Valley Catholic. Get ready to raise your bidder paddles!

Keep this in mind when making your gift tonight:

• 1 out of 4 VCS students receive financial assistance• On average, tuition covers only 75% of the true cost of educating each student• Currently, families receive 50% or less of the aid for which they qualify• Your gift determines whether or not some students can attend Valley Catholic• Financial aid allows a student to stay at VCS should his or her family experience an unexpected hardship• Financial aid keeps our classrooms full and vibrant

Many employers match gifts that are made during “Light a Fire.” Matching gifts often increase your donation by 50 to 100 percent. For more information on matching gifts, go to ssmofoundation.org.

Early lEarning School ProjEct: “Let’s Wiggle Our Way to the Moon!”We asked our youngest VCS students how they would get to the moon, and they gave us the most adorable, eclectic, out-of-this-world answers! We’ve collected them all in a book entitled “How Would I Get to the Moon?” You will definitely be amused and entertained by these young authors!

After returning from the moon, everyone needs a good place to relax. To this end, we have commissioned a hand-painted table and two chairs with an outer-space theme. On the back of the chairs is the beloved childhood quote “I love you to the moon and back!” This collection will delight both parents and children and will grace any child’s room.

The little astronauts have also assembled a collection of enchanting moon-themed children’s books, which have been tucked inside a handmade fabric book bag so they can be easily carried on trips to outer space.

Generously donated by Valley Catholic early Learning SchoolCoordinated by Janet Lynn

Special thanks to Becky Christian for her artistic rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon” on the table and chairs, and to Margie Vannoy for her out-of-this-world sewing skills on the book bag.

KindErgartEn ProjEct: “Top Chef”They might be one of the youngest classes at VCS, but they know good food when they taste it! Each kindergarten class has created a chef-themed package. We’ll sell these two projects separately by class. Each package contains a cookbook, cookie jar and goodies.

• Your family will have a terrific time cooking together using this professionally created kindergarten cookbook that captures each child’s favorite recipe. The cookbook includes a personal note describing why each recipe is the child’s favorite and a special chef photo of each child.

• Of course, the experience of cooking is more enticing when goodies are involved. The lucky winning bidder will receive home-baked treats once a month for six months from “Cheryl’s Cookies”—delivered! Each month, choose from a variety of super yummy cookies, brownies and other such delectable desserts.

• Keep those cookies fresh in this large hand-decorated cookie jar. Crafted of high-quality ceramic, the cookie jar is adorned with the children’s fingerprints, transformed into adorable butterflies, ladybugs and caterpillars.

This package is too yummy to miss. Parents and grandparents will surely be scrambling for their bid cards, so get yours ready!

FirSt-gradE ProjEct: “Shoot for the Moon. Reach for the Stars.”The first-grade class proudly presents a unique, inspirational artwork based on author Les Brown’s quote: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

Set amid a dark night sky backdrop, this 32-inch wide by 24-inch tall piece literally depicts the first-grade class reaching for bright, yellow stars above. Each child’s unique jump, silhouette and shining personality are captured in midair while reaching for the stars. The bright, yellow stars are equally unique—the first-graders carefully painted and autographed their own stars to complete this inspirational artwork. But wait, there’s more! Want to find your special first-grader? The stars above are aligned in the same orientation as the students’ silhouettes below.

This year’s first-graders dream big dreams and aspire to do their best. They have achieved greatness with this veritable masterpiece. They are true stars! You can be too, by owning and proudly displaying this priceless work of art.

SEcond-gradE ProjEct: A Pair of Brilliant BirdbathsImagine a birdbath that will add year-round color and vibrancy to your landscape—a beacon of joy and light in the gray cloudscape of the Pacific Northwest. Imagine your pride in displaying the artwork of your child’s class in your home garden.

The second-graders are ecstatic and proud to introduce their amazing creations: two beautiful fused-glass birdbaths!

With amazing talent and creativity to spare, the second-graders designed their own 2-inch by 3-inch glass rectangles. Choosing color, shape and size, they carefully pieced together layers of glass that were then fired together to create a small masterpiece. Placed side-by-side on flat circular forms, the rectangles were twice-fired in a kiln to create these two spectacular art objects. To add visual height to your garden, both bowls are accompanied by a metal stand, making it possible to see your newly acquired work of art from virtually any vantage point in your yard.

Don’t miss this chance to own these truly stunning pieces of functional art that will brighten your landscape for years to come.

third-gradE ProjEct: Magical Mosaic Mirror“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the fairest project of them all?” Search no more! The third-grade classes’ mosaic tile-framed mirror is enchanting and lovely to behold. The intricacy and delicacy in rendering reflects a labor of care and love.

Standing 43 inches wide by 31 inches tall, the mirror is framed with tiles that were formed and hand-shaped by the clever and dexterous third-graders. The tiles are imprinted with a variety of Christian and nature-themed stamps. Each earth-toned tile was then hand-detailed with metallic dust. Once finished, glass seed bead grout was used to accent the tiles.

With its timeless beauty and originality, this mirror will grace any room in your home and is destined to be a conversation piece for many years to come. Don’t miss the chance to take home this magic mirror!

Fourth-gradE ProjEct: Faith Is...This beautiful wall hanging features a collage of crosses decorated by the fourth-grade students as well as Mrs. Flint, Ms. Pausz, Mr. Manning and Mrs. Poling. Students were given die-cut paper crosses which they decorated with markers. All the crosses were then arranged together on a mat board to form one beautiful, colorful cross. Ready to hang in an elegant black frame, this piece measures 36 inches high by 28 inches wide. It is sure to brighten any room and bless all those who see it.

The students and teachers were asked to finish the sentence, “Faith is...” Their responses are featured in the accompanying book. Each page features a student and his or her photo, a picture of the crosses decorated, and personal reflections on the meaning of faith. The result is a professionally produced hardcover book that complements the wall hanging.

These items will grace your home and preserve your child’s memories of his/her classmates, teachers and fourth-grade year at Valley Catholic Elementary School. It will undoubtedly also be a wonderful reminder of what faith is.

Page 19: Fly Me to the Moon Gala Catalog

FiFth-gradE ProjEct: Nature’s Silhouette QuiltThe fifth-graders made a beautiful quilt reflecting the amazing variety of trees and plants on our campus. Students designed their individual squares, then walked together around the campus and collected natural objects to use in making collages.

Fabric treated with photo-reactive dye, when exposed to the sun, turns cobalt blue. The silhouettes of the natural objects (leaves, rocks, twigs, pinecones, petals, etc) showed up white because the water-based dye applied to the fabric develops in the sunlight. The areas shielded by the natural objects remain uncolored. The process was magical!

This project was a great opportunity to discuss the plant variety on campus and to explore the art of negative space with the students. The result is this beautiful twin-sized quilt in Valley Catholic colors that any VCS student will be delighted to have in his/her room.

Please note, due to the photo-reactive fabric, this quilt will be enjoyed best as a decorative piece.

Generously donated by the fifth-grade classes of Mrs. Heger and Mrs. WhiteCoordinated by Nooshin Sabet and Marti Tait

Sixth-gradE ProjEct: Memories that Last a LifetimeOutdoor school is one of the largest group events your student will experience at Valley Catholic Middle School—memories that will last a lifetime. Preserve those precious memories by owning this piece of outdoor school.

The Valley Catholic sixth-grade students have created an outdoor bench—similar in style to the ones at Camp Howard—that resembles a tree cut in half. About 4 feet long, the bench has been personalized with a photograph—taken during outdoor school—of the sixth-grade class. The image has been finished in sepia and sealed into the bench. Intended to be used outdoors, this unique bench has been finished with clear weather proofing and is ready to enhance your landscaping year-round.

Also included in this package is an exclusive book of beautiful photos that capture every aspect of the outdoor school experience—from daily routines to the nightly campfire.

SEvEnth-gradE ProjEct: Create in MeInspired by Michael Albert’s modern pop art form—“Cerealism”—the seventh-grade class proudly presents this one-of a-kind wall hanging that is truly outside the box.

Based on the middle school’s theme—Create in Me—students chose attributes that they want God to create in them. The students cut letters from recycled food boxes to design their words. The words were then arranged as a collage and adhered with Mod Podge onto a two-inch thick Gessobord, a premium archival surface that closely resembles a wooden canvas. The entire 36-by-36 inch collage was then coated with a glossy layer of Mod Podge. To maintain the pop art look, it has been left unframed.

Complementing this unique project is a very special book created by the students. Students used digital tools to design their own pages, which include photos of themselves, digital renditions of the words they chose for the collage, and personal prayers for what they would like God to “create in them.” Don’t miss your chance to own this eye-catching “Cerealism” masterpiece!

Generously donated by the seventh-grade class of Valley Catholic Middle SchoolCoordinated by Liz Amann, Julie Decker, Mechell Hansen, Monique Ierardi, Jill Lovely, Kathleen Melancon and Lesley Silenzi with special thanks to Ms. Zinzer for her work on the prayer book

Eighth-gradE ProjEct: Be a Part of History! The eighth-graders are on the verge of closing out their middle school experience as they look ahead to the future with great hope and anticipation.

They’ll be making great memories at two special upcoming events—a retreat/play day at Horning’s Hideout and their graduation brunch. Preserve those memories with this exclusive book, professionally printed, of photos from these two activities. In addition, the book will include at least 20 photos of your child and your child’s group of friends during both events. These photos will not be available anywhere else.

In addition, your soon-to-be-freshman will love this beautiful memory book—also professionally produced—featuring the students. Each page is dedicated to a student and includes his or her current and childhood photos, reflections on the first school memory, a skill developed and the most important lesson learned in school.

This package also includes a unique opportunity to make your mark on history. Speak to the next generation by adding something to our time capsule, which will be unearthed 25 years from now in 2038. The item(s) you tuck into in a 5-by-7 inch envelope will be buried in the time capsule this summer, upon the completion of the 125th Anniversary Garden that will be located behind the Elementary/Middle School building. This is truly a unique opportunity!

Registration• All bidders must register. You will be

given an identification number to use for all bidding. One number will be given per family unit or individual guest; if request-ed, a family unit may request to have in-dividual numbers.

• Your signature on the registration form constitutes a legal contract to buy any item for which you are successful in bidding.

purchasing• All sales are final and there will be no ex-

change or refund on items except where specified.

• Arrangements for dates for all trips and similar events are the sole responsibil-ity of the purchaser. Unless specified, all certificates for trips expire on April 27, 2014, one year from the date of the Gala. Moreover, no refunds are permitted for canceled, lost or unused tickets and/or accommodations, or if the purchaser is unable to arrange a mutually agreeable date for the purchased trip or event.

• Values set forth are estimates only and are not warranted by the Valley Catholic Gala or the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Foundation (Hereinafter “Gala Chair/Of-

ficial”) for tax purposes or for general value. All items are sold “As Is.” The Gala Chair/Official assumes no responsibility for the correctness of item description.

• Due to local liquor control laws, restau-rant certificates do not include alcoholic beverages, unless otherwise stated.

• Gift certificates not on display in baskets will be held at the checkout desk. They may be collected from retrieval when you check out.

• Payment for winning bids at the Silent or Live Auction must be made by cash, check (payable to Valley Catholic Gala), or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Ameri-can Express, or Discover). Payment in full is mandatory no later than 10:30 p.m. on the night of the gala. Items too large to be taken home the night of the gala may be picked up the following Tuesday be-tween noon and 5 p.m. at the Gala Office at the rear of the SSMO Convent, unless other arrangements are made with the Gala Chair/Official.

• Unless otherwise specified, all items and services purchased at the Gala will expire on April 30, 2014.

• The Gala is run in accordance with the Oregon State law regarding auction sales.

The specific statute applying to auctions can be found at Oregon Revised Statutes 72.3280.

Silent Auction• All items in the Silent Auction have bid

sheets on the table in front of them. Items are located on the tables around the room. Persons desiring to bid must do so by legibly writing their bid num-ber, full name and amount of bid in the spaces provided.

• Bid raises must be in the minimum amounts specified on the bid sheet. If the minimum bid is not observed, the bid is void. The Gala Chair/Official will make the final determination of the successful bidder on any written auction item. If a subsequent bid is disqualified or other-wise stricken for any reason prior to the closing of bidding, the last, highest bid on the bid sheet will be deemed the suc-cessful bid.

• Some Silent Auction items may have designated “guaranteed bid” amounts. A bidder may choose to bypass all com-petitive bidding by paying the specified guaranteed bid listed on the bottom of the bid sheet. To do so, the bidder writes

his/her bid number and name on the line next the guaranteed bid price. An Gala Chair/Official will draw a line across the entire bid sheet to indicate that the item is no longer available for bidding.

• Under no circumstances may a bid sheet be removed except by the Gala Chair/Of-ficial.

• Announcements will be made prior to the closing. The closing bid certified by an Gala Chair/Official will constitute the winning bid. The Silent Auction will close at 6:45 p.m. At that time, all bidding is over and no more writing is allowed on bid sheets.

Mini-Live Auction• New this year, the students’ Grade Proj-

ects will be highlighted in a special por-tion of the evening called the Mini-Live. Grade Projects can be bid on during the Silent Auction beginning at 5 p.m. At 6:15 the Mini-Live Auction will begin. The silent bid sheets will be removed and used as a starting point for the auc-tioneer, who will begin the oral bidding process. All Grade Projects will be sold during the Mini-Live PRIOR to the Live Auction.

Gala Auction Rules

67

Page 68: Fly Me to the Moon Gala Catalog

Gala Auction Rules (continued)• School grade projects are exclusive to the

Gala. These projects are created solely for the auction. No projects may be re-quested, created, copied or sold after the Gala.

Live Auction• Live Auction bidding will begin at ap-

proximately 7:20 p.m. and will continue until all items have been auctioned. Live Auction items will be displayed for view-ing from 4 p.m. until the start of the Live Auction.

• Under Oregon law regarding auctions, a sale of auction is complete when the auctioneer so announces by lowering the gavel, or in any other customary man-ner. Therefore, once the gavel falls, the purchase is complete and the auction item has been purchased by the bidder. All sales are final and there will be no exchange or refund on an item except where specified.

• To bid, the purchaser raises his/her bid-der number high so it can be seen eas-ily. It will be acknowledged by one of the spotters; then the purchaser may lower it until he/she wishes to bid again.

• Bidding order of Live Auction items is

subject to change after the publication of this catalog.

• No duplicate items may be offered in the Live Auction, unless authorized by the donor, in person or prior to bidding. Once the bidding process has ended for an item and that item has been sold, a duplicate of the item cannot be offered.

Raffles • Valley Catholic Gala raffles are held in

strict accordance with Oregon state law and guidelines provided by the Oregon Department of Justice. Ticket purchasers must be at least 18 years old.

• Golden Ticket Raffle: Tickets will only be sold the night of the Gala; no more than 100 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winning ticket will be drawn on stage just prior to the Live Auction. The winner will choose from all Live Auction packages. The method of payment toward the chosen package will appear as “golden ticket” in the payment section of the win-ner’s receipt. Once the winner has cho-sen the package and the Live Auction has begun, no changes will be allowed by the winner. Winner may forfeit the prize and donate the package back to the auction

to be sold during the Live Auction.• Raffle Tickets: Tickets will be sold up un-

til the beginning of the Live Auction or until the maximum number of tickets are sold; no more than 2,000 tickets will be sold at $25 each. The raffle ticket for the grand prize will be drawn at the end of the Live Auction. Winner does not need to be present at the time of the draw-ing to be eligible to win. Winner agrees to pay all state and federal taxes associ-ated with the offered raffle prize. Winner may forfeit the prize. If the first winner forfeits the prize, a second winner will be drawn. Ticket stubs will be kept in a locked box in a secure area until each winner has fulfilled tax requirements and taken ownership of raffle prize.

proxy Bidding• Bids may be made in absentia via the

proxy bid form provided by the Gala Of-fice and available on the auction website. Proxy bids are applicable for Live, Mini Live and Silent Auction packages. Silent Auction items with guaranteed bids are exempt from Proxy bidding. Proxy bid sheets must be received in the Gala office no later than Thursday, April 25 at 5 p.m.

Proxy Bidders will be represented by a Gala official during the bidding process.

• Bidders may submit absentee bids for sign-up parties, but those bids will not be entered on the sign-up sheets until after the Silent Auction has closed and all bid-ders present at the Gala have had an op-portunity to purchase spots.

warranty• The Gala Chair/Official, Auctioneer,

Seller or Donor may not give any warran-ty, expressed or implied, as to the quality of the description of the property listed for sale in the announcement concern-ing the sale. In addition, the Gala Chair/Official, Auctioneer, Seller or Donor is not liable for the quality of the property listed for sale in the announcement or for any faulty description thereof, in any advertisement, catalog or other medium employed for announcing the sale. Pur-chaser shall not be entitled to damages, recession or any other remedy on ac-count of the quality of the property listed for sale in the announcement or the faulty description of the property.
