TakingITGlobal Project Information
So what is TakingITGlobal (TIG)?TakingITGlobal is a network of youth and educators across 200
countries that aims to provide opportunities for learning, capacity-
building, cross-cultural awareness, and self-development through the use
of information and communication technologies. It is free to set up an
account with TIG at http://tigweb.org
Why work with TIG?In a global society, our students need to become aware of other cultural
perspectives. Many of the biggest issues today require a global response
and youth need to feel as if they have a voice and can make a difference.
There are tools on the site to help your students make global connections
and to set up collaborative action projects for positive change.
What are the details of the TIG project?
CORE Education are managing this project set up as a partnership
between TakingITGlobal, the Ministry of Education, CORE Education
and participating schools. Schools with students ranging from Year 7 to
Year 12 can opt into receiving different levels of support from Liz
Stevenson, the project co-ordinator, in the ways detailed below.
Virtual support
• An online wiki set up to support and document the project ( http://
takingitglobalnz.wikispaces.com )
• Phone, email and Skype support
• Project newsletter (to showcase the projects happening in NZ schools)
Workshops and in-school support
Based on identified needs, teachers can be supported to:
• navigate around TIG website and locate appropriate resources
• plan a project or series of lessons incorporating TIG content
• establish global connections and projects with other TIG educators
• work within a virtual classroom space (optional at an additional cost)
What is possible? The Carbon Footprint project - Forty classes participated from around
the globe to reduce their carbon footprint. In the words of one teacher,
“Everybody was working on one goal and the kids communicated,
collaborated and shared in our virtual classroom space. It took a while
for the kids to actually get talking but once they did, it was really
meaningful. They were on task and they could see that the whole world
was connected. We considered it a classroom without borders.”

"I think it has really sparked their enthusiasm and has alerted them
to the fact that there is a big world out there and that there are many different perspectives. The
kids have been quite proud to share their culture with the kids in
Canada. My students were amazed at the ability of the
Canadian students to articulate about water problems. It was
good role modelling for my students."
