MCAS ELA is this week. Testing room assignments are posted in the windows of

the main office and the grade offices. Your homeroom teacher also has a list of

testing room assignments. If you do not know your testing dates and room

assignment, I ask that you please be certain to know this by the end of the day

tomorrow. Computer based MCAS ELA testing is for 2 days only. Half of the class

is testing on March 26th and 27th and the other half of the class is testing on

March 28th and 29th. Please report to your testing room immediately after first

period on the days that you are assigned to MCAS ELA. Testing begins promptly

at 8:34. If you have any questions about MCAS testing, please see Mr.

McGillivrary.

All MCAS test administrators and proctors are reminded to read the script

verbatim. Homework should be kept to a minimum and major assessments

should not be administered to students who are scheduled for MCAS.

Framingham State University Elevate and Connect: Youth Summit 2019 Open to all students. First come, first served basis, 20 seats available. Please contact

FHS Robotics Team 9421X invited to the 2019 VEX World Championship!:

This is the sixth year in a row the FHS team will have compete at Worlds and the

fifth year in a row that 9421X has been at Worlds. We are the only Massachusetts

public high school to compete in six out of the last six years. There are only two

other schools in New England that have made six of the last six, congratulations!

FHS Drama Company will be advancing to the State Finals of the Massachusetts Educational Theatre Guild festival with their production of Animal Farm. The state finals feature the top fourteen productions in the state will span over three days at the John Hancock Building in Boston.

Awards from the Semi-Final Round were presented to:

FHS will perform as the first show of the weekend - Thursday, March 28th @

5:00pm. They will also perform for freshman English classes this week on

Thursday, March 21 @ 8:00am. Please come and support the FHSDC with their

long-standing legacy at State Finals!

From School Counseling:

10th and 11th graders: You must schedule an appointment with your school counselor to complete your

schedule for next year. This must happen before March 29th. 11th graders - you received a link in your

email to your counselor’s appointment book. 10th graders - you can sign up on the school counseling

website.

9th graders: You received your course recommendation forms in homeroom last week. Counselors will

be pulling students from math courses in order to meet with each student to review course selections

during the last week of March and first week of April. In the meantime, please discuss your

recommendations and electives with your teachers and parents and guardians. Please come ready to

your assigned math class to choose classes.

Aspen X2 new feature enabled - Password Reset Portal

In Aspen, there is a self-service password reset feature which allows users to reset their

account password without having to call the Technology Helpdesk for assistance. If you

are an FPS Staff member or a student in grades 6-12 you can use the password reset

feature, but you need to set the security preferences before using it for the first time.

Please refer to the documentation below to set up your security questions. This

documentation can also be found on the Technology department Aspen X2 Information

webpage. There are also links on every school website under the homepage Quick

Links and in the Families and Students menu section, so that it can be easily

referenced.

The Office of Technology strongly encourages students in grades 6-12 and all FPS staff

to enable Aspen X2 security questions and use the password reset link. We are hoping

the password reset portal will make the process of logging into Aspen X2 easier for

staff, students and families as we approach the time of year when more people access

their accounts for transportation registrations and viewing school data.

Please note:

1. If your account is disabled, you will have to call the helpdesk for a password

reset. At that time, we will instruct you on how to set up the security preferences.

2. Parents and Students currently log into the student’s Aspen X2 account with the

same login ID and password.

Framingham State University, McCarthy Center Forum 7:00pm Space Hero or

Nazi Villain? The life of Wernher von Braun

Few figures in the history of technology provoke a reaction as quickly as Wernher von Braun.

The rocket scientist was a card-carrying Nazi who built the world's first ballistic missile with

slave labor from concentration camps. As the war wound down, he surrendered to the

Americans who took his rocket-building team and his talents to the United States, along with

hundreds of Nazi scientists, engineers and technicians under the auspices of “Operation

Paperclip”. In the United States he first designed weapons and eventually was in charge to

develop the epic Saturn V rocket that sent six sets of Apollo astronauts to the moon. In

between, he managed, through charm, wit and undeniable genius, to become a charismatic

spokesman for space travel in America.

The speaker is Dr. Michael Neufeld, from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

Neufeld’s careful research provides a view of von Braun as a man like Goethe's Faust, who

"uses his infernal powers to build great engineering works for what he believes to be the

betterment of mankind." Faust mistreats his workers and inadvertently kills people in his way,

but he feels no guilt, because "he cannot accept personal responsibility."

Several members of our book club are considering enrolling in a Reflective Reading course offered for grad credits online by Dominican University out of California: Dominican University Reflective Reading Course. So, we decided to choose our books for the next 3 months from the course’s book list; all of these books are ones that had been on our “to-read” list anyway, so we’re killing 2 birds with one stone. Our book discussions will not be related to the course, so you’re welcome to come discuss these books with us whether you’re planning to take this course or not.

FHS Staff Yoga

Tuesday afternoons at 2:20pm in the Library Closed Classroom, for a 70 minute class. Remaining term 3 dates: 3/26, and 4/2 (added date to make up for snow day cancellation). Drop-ins are always welcome at $10/class.

Couch to 5K Program

If you’re interesting in getting in shape after a long, cold winter please consider trying a Couch to 5K Program that Mark Goldschmidt will be organizing along with the Greater Framingham Running Club. Details are still being finalized, but it will likely start on Saturday April 20th and will run (pun intended) for 8 weeks, culminating in a 5K road race in June. Group training sessions will take place at Cushing Park in a very supportive and judgment-free environment on Saturday mornings. This gradual progression is for those of you who have never tried a 5K before as well as those who have but who just want the structure and motivation to get back into it. All are welcome, so please let friends, neighbors and family know and reach out to Mark if you’re interested.

6:30PM at Hemenway Elementary School. Register here!

The National Honor Society will be hosting the 2nd Annual Putting for Patients

Event on March 24th from 12-3 in the cafe. Come and enjoy 18 holes of mini golf,

a hole in 1 contest, crafts for kids, raffles, and bake sale. All proceeds go to Dana

Farber for research on pediatric cancer. $10 a person or $25 per family. This is a

great family friend event. Prizes for lowest score!

Helping Local Dogs! Buddy Dog in Sudbury is always in need of donations to care

for the dogs that are in the shelter. Donations can be brought to F115 (Mrs.

Lovett’s Class) and placed in the bin. If you have a donation that needs to be

picked up or want to know what supplies are needed please contact

Flu Advisory - 2019

Rates of flu-like illness rose in Massachusetts in the past seven days, according to

the latest weekly Massachusetts Department of Public Health flu report.

Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through coughs

and sneezes of infected people. Less often, a person also might get the flu by

touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own

mouth, eyes, or nose. People of all ages get sick with flu. School-aged children are

a group with a high rate of flu illness.

Flu-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body

aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people, especially children, may have

vomiting and diarrhea. People may also be infected with flu and have respiratory

symptoms without a fever.

The good news is that it is not too late to protect yourself and your family from

the flu by getting a flu shot. There is still plenty of flu vaccine available in

communities across Massachusetts. Call your health care provider to schedule a

visit for a flu shot, visit a local pharmacy, or search for flu vaccination locations at
