Luminous rectilinear forms appear to float in space, mounted in striking patterns on

ceilings and walls or suspended in sequence from adjustable cables. Here is a lighting

approach that is simple to the point of abstraction. FLYING SURFACE, conceived by

celebrated French architect Jean Nouvel for Spanish lighting manufacturer Troll, is

the result of capturing light on a plane floating in space. FLYING SURFACE delivers

soft, soothing, uniform illumination, and its pure form encourages playful, creative

arrangement for unusual visual effects.

Advanced materials.To achieve the poetic visual concept of FLYING SURFACE, Troll used advanced

materials to assure appropriate transmission of light with highly refined uniformity. A

special white textile material on an acrylic base conceals the steel inner body, housing an

enhanced reflector and T8 fluorescent lamps. With optional electronic dimming, the 2x2,

4x4 and 4x6 FLYING SURFACE luminaires provide the variation needed for designers

to inject high drama into virtually any interior space. FLYING SURFACE is available in

pendant-, ceiling-, and surface-mounted versions.

JEAN NOUvEL, the designer of FLYING SURFACE for Troll, has received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the Wolf Prize in Arts, and the Pritzker Prize. Numerous museums and architectural centers have presented retrospectives of his work.

The FLYING SURFACE shade is comprised of a special white textile material on an acrylic base over a steel frame. The fabric was chosen specifically for its color and diffusing capabilities. It is cleanable with soap and water.

FLYING SURFACE consists of a steel pan, which houses all of the lamps and control gear, and a shade covered in fabric over acrylic.

The luminous fabric of FLYING SURFACE appears to float in space because the sides of the frame are angled back 17º and are not lit.

Pendant or surface. FLYING SURFACE is available in both pendant and surface configurations, giving specifiers the ability to create planes of

light in a range of configurations on ceilings or walls.
