French architect Paul Andreu’s iconic ellipsoid dome floats on the artificial lake in which it is set like the egg of a giant bird. Made of titanium and glass, the National Grand Theatre Opera House of Beijing covers an area of approximately 12,000 square metres and rises to a height of 46 metres. Its three performance halls have a

Architect Frank Gehry’s first New York structure—the IAC building, headquarters of Inter Active Corp—is a white-glass wonder that has been credited with “adding a much-needed touch of lightness to the Manhattan skyline”. The curved 10-storey building features enormous 35 ft x 22 ft glass panels, each one bent to an

For the first time in its 26-year history, Brigade Group has signed a Private Equity (PE) deal with Government of Singapore Investment Corporation Pte Ltd or GIC Singapore. The agreement is to develop a residential property on Whitefield Main Road, acquired from Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) through a bidding process. The land spans about 9.50 acres for a developable area of over one million sft of prime residential apartments.

GIC is a global investment management company owned by the Govern-ment of Singapore. It was established in 1981 to manage Singapore’s foreign reserves and is now amongst the world’s largest fund management companies. The 500-seat Luce Memorial Chapel was designed by architect I. M. Pei, with artist Chen Chi-kwan. Reinforced concrete was selected as building material in deference to Taiwan’s humid, typhoon-prone climate. facilities and teachingOver the last 26 years, we have supported and sponsored a host of cultural programmes, lectures, theatre, and music and dance performances.

We will soon be taking our involvement a step further through a project we are supporting—the Centre for Indian Music Experience or IME, India’s first interactive music museum. Located in the Brigade Millennium enclave in J.P. Nagar, Bangalore, the IME will be a vibrant music epicenter, designed to encourage a rediscovery of various genres of Indian music, from the traditional to the contemporary.

The unique 60,000 sft building will include multi-media galleries featur-ing photographs, instrument installations, audio-visuals, and interactive experi-ential areas; an outdoor Sound Garden, with musical sculptures that bring to life the principles of sound; and a ‘Learning Centre’ that will be at the forefront of delivering systematised arts education in schools, in addition to hosting seminars and workshops.

Children at any of The Brigade Schools begin school life with the benefits

of a unique, Montessori-based Pre-primary education. Each stage of

schooling is carefully constructed, allowing children to move seamlessly

from Nursery to Std 12, in one familiar system and environment.

The Brigade Schools have been set up and are managed by Brigade

Foundation, a Not-for-Profit Trust of Brigade Group.

Inspired by the Royal Ontario Museum’s gem collection, architect Daniel Libeskind designed the addition to the museum’s main building in a unique crystalline shape. Admired for its engineer-ing complexity, the Lee-Chin Crystal comprises five interlocking, self-supporting prismatic structures, linked to the original building

by bridges. The exterior is made of glass and extruded-brushed, aluminum-cladding. The building’s steel beams were lifted, piece by piece, to their specific angle, creating complicated angle joints, sloped walls, and gallery ceilings.Full text at BrigadeGroup.com/calendar-2013

HUSAIN-DOSHI GUFA, AHMEDABAD, INDIA

The Husain-Doshi Gufa is a collaborative effort between architect B.V. Doshi, who conceptualised and designed the space, and the late M.F. Husain, who brought it to life with his painting and sculpture. This unorthodox subterranean art gallery is a surreal sculpture, composed of domes, shells and protruding skylights. The

underground museum is contiguous and amorphous, with curvilin-ear walls, undulating floors and leaning columns. Its structure was designed using computers, while its construction was done by unskilled workers using hand tools.Full text at BrigadeGroup.com/calendar-2013

Arguably one of the most distinctive buildings of modern times, the Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. This great urban sculpture, at the tip of a peninsula project-ing into Sydney Harbour, comprises three groups of interlocking vaulted shell-like structures. Two of them contain performance
