Children’s Studio Theatre Catalogue

Greetings from FMCT,

Over the past few years FMCT has increased its educational offerings to grow and expand our mission of Providing Theatrical and Educational opportunities to enrich and engage the greater community. We have done so by increasing the number of performance learning experiences through our Children’s Studio Theatre productions. Another way we are engaging the youth of this community is through a strategic implementation of new and innovative weekly education classes. While youth is a large part of our education base, FMCT is a place for people of all ages and experiences to participate in and learn through the arts. We offer adult classes and workshops throughout the year and pride ourselves on teaching while we are rehearsing our many adult productions. While CST might sound like it is only for kids, it is really about family-friendly programming and productions, which are aimed to attract whole family participation.I hope you will join us for a class this year and grow your creative side.

Whether it’s your first time or if you are brushing up on your skills, this workshop is sure to help you in your audition technique. Workshop theme may focus on a particular production. Audition Workshops for the spring production of GYPSY are listed on page 5.

Stage Combat ~ Grades 5-12Learn fight choreography in a safe environment. Choreography is taught slowly and is performed in a way which will not harm the actors, but will look convincing to the audience

Master Class with Christopher Gabriel Grades 9-12This four-week, 12-hour master class will immerse young artists in an intense exploration of acting skills and voice/speech work to help deepen their understanding and technique through exercises, scenes and/or monologues while pushing them beyond their self imposed creative limitations.

Voice: Protecting your Instrument ~ 16-AdultMSUM Speech Pathologist, Richard Adler, will take actors through everything they need to know about how the voice works as a mechanism, and how to produce sound in a healthy way. Learn vocal warm ups, how you may be hurting your voice and what to do to prevent misuse and abuse, which muscles are used to produce the voice, and how to keep your voice healthy.

Yoga for Breath and Focus ~ 16-Adult Certified Yoga Instructor, Laura Shores, will lead this Yoga class designed to bring the actor into a centered calm space, into the present moment, to learn how to use the breath to help the actor support his or her voice, and how to return to this calm center in order to focus and mentally and emotionally bring yourself into character.

Class DescriptionsCreating a Character ~ Grade 5-8This class will be character intensive, utilizing scene work with a partner. The actors’ critical analysis of the script, along with some improvisational work, will allow them to give life to their characters, and connect emotionally to their scene partners’ character. This class is a must for any serious actor, and is also perfect for a beginner who is learning what it means to be an

actor. The actors will perform scenes for their families during the last class. Acting 1 ~ Grades K-4Develop basic acting skills in this class. Learn stage directions, vocal projection, movement, and character development. This class is perfect for the young child who is just beginning, or for the child who has been in productions and would like to enhance his/her skills and knowledge.

Imagination Vacation/Kids in Motion ~ PreschoolJoin Preschool teacher and Director of It’s a Small World Preschool, Shanara Lassig, in our amazing imaginary adventure for your 3-5 year old! The children will enhance their development and intelligence while using their imaginations to create scenery, sing and dance to music, listen to songs and rhythms, read stories and act them out, move like animals, learn to cooperate, take turns, and work as a group. Themes will change for each class session. Improvisation ~ Grades 7-12Improvisation training is essential to the development of any strong actor. This class is not just for the comedian, but for the actor to develop skills of relating to other actors and staying in the present moment. JJ Gordon from Lindebenders will lead this skill building class. We will break actors out of their shells and provide them with skills to bring to any future acting experience. This class is also extremely helpful for learning how to take direction, and how to use it constructively.

Voice and Diction ~ Grades 5-8If the audience cannot understand an actor, they cannot effectively relate or connect with the character and storyline. Learning proper diction and how to support the voice with the breath is the most basic skill every actor needs in his or her toolbox!

Stage Combat ~ Grades 5-12Learn fight choreography such as slaps, punches, kicks, throwing and holding, and basic sword play. Choreography is learned step by step, and taught in a way that is convincing and safe. This class will build technique, and students will perform a final fight scene for their families during the last class.3
