Match Day Excitement!
I love Autumn. The leaves start to change, a cool breeze moves in, coffee is
available in pumpkin spice, and Match Day arrives! This is such an exciting
time of year when the newest generation of MIGS stars take the next step
toward their dreams. One click on the keyboard reveals the results of three
years of hard work, thousands of dollars on your credit card, endless email
reminders for letters of recommendation, and sore feet from walking across
medical centers in heels and new loafers. A match is defined as “a pair that
corresponds or is very similar” which is the obvious point of Match Day.
However, “match” is also defined as “a contest in which people compete
against each other in a particular sport.” While in the midst of interviewing this
definition feels much more accurate. As a Program Director I appreciate the
angst and effort it requires of the applicants. So to all those who found good
news after one click on the keyboard, welcome and congratulations! To those
who did not find matches this year, I hope you find comfort in knowing that this
year was especially competitive and we wish you the best in fulfilling your
dreams! ~ Amanda C. Yunker, DO, MSCR
April 2016 A Communication from the Board to the Programs
October, 2016
It has been a remarkably productive year for FMIGS. Between the updated reading list, case
requirements, video curriculum, mobile case logs and evaluations, milestones and several new
fellowship sites, the outlook for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery is bright. This should not
be surprising. Most of the top gynecologic programs ranked by US News and World Report have
either a center, division or section devoted to the practice of MIGS, frequently run by a fellowship
trained MIGS clinician. There is a tremendous need for MIGS surgeons. We care for patients with
complex gynecologic problems outside the realm of most general obstetrician/gynecologists, serve
as a consultant and perform surgery often using more advanced surgical
techniques than most general obstetrician/gynecologists. Resident
graduates have also taken notice and applied to MIGS in record numbers.
The number of resident applicants (n=65) significantly outpaced the
number of positions available (n=37). Similar to 2015, FMIGS was
considered one of the most competitive fellowships participating in the
NRMP based on the ratio of the number of applicants to positions and
exceeding all other October-matched obstetric and gynecologic fellowship
positions (MIGS: 1.76, Gyn Onc: 1.51, REI: 1.47, MFM: 1.46, Peds and
Adolescent: 1.09). Yes, the future is indeed quite bright!

MIGS/FPRN Research Projects, What Are They?
Who can participate in MIGS/FPRN research projects? The research network is open to all current MIGS fellows. Research proposals are accepted for consideration from any current MIGS fellow. Residents and fellows from additional subspecialties are welcome to join as adjunct sites for approved projects.
How do I submit a project for consideration? Please go to the SGSonline.org/fprn website and scroll down to the heading "Research Proposal Submissions" and the subheading "FMIGS/SGS FPRN Online Proposal Submission." Use the form "Research Proposal Form" under the same subheading as a template for submission.
When will I hear back about my research proposal? All submitted research proposals will be reviewed by the MIGS/FPRN committee for consideration. Projects of potential interest will be invited to provide a brief presentation at an upcoming national meeting for final approval. Projects will be selected by vote of the committee and current MIGS fellows. Accepted projects will be notified and added to the existing approved projects for multi-site participation through the FPRN website.
How do I join an existing approved project? Approved projects are listed on the FPRN page SGSonline.org/fprn under the heading "Projects" and subheading "Ongoing."
Can I use the existing IRB approval of the approved project? Yes, IRB approval will be confirmed at the home institution with the IRB materials open and available to any wishing to pursue this study at his or her institution.
Will I receive authorship for joining a study? The research network follows standard authorship guidelines. Therefore, any fellow or resident that substantially contributes to the project, participates in manuscript composition, approves the final version for publication and agrees to be accountable to the integrity of the work will be listed as an author. Typically, each participating site will have at least one author listed. Order of authorship is determined by the PI based on level of contribution. Advisory Board members that serve as the project mentor and the home institution faculty mentor will be the last authors for abstract and publication. The final author will be the faculty member most involved and instrumental in project development and completion.
Is there funding for this research? Limited funding is available on a case by case basis at the discretion of the committee. Expected financial requirements will be addressed during the project submission process and accepted or amended upon approval.
What are the responsibilities if I join a project? Each member of a project is expected to actively participate in the work and participate in regular group communication via conference call or other modality. Project communication will occur monthly or more frequently, depending on the demands of the project. If any member of the project team, including the PI, is unresponsive or not fulfilling their responsibility in an efficient manner, that individual may be removed from the study. Removal of an individual from a study may only proceed after presentation to and agreement of the Senior Advisory Board.
What if I graduate? Am I still the primary investigator? The fellow that submits the proposal will serve as PI until the end of his or her fellowship. Projects that are not completed prior to the graduation of the PI can be passed to a junior fellow at the same site who becomes the new PI. First authorship will go the original PI or subsequent PI at the original site who oversees the majority of the recruitment, data collection and manuscript composition. This is determined by the initial PI, subsequent PI and faculty mentor at the home institution.
FPRN Projects Looking for Sites The MIGS-SGS Subgroup of the FPRN is eager to get you involved! The deadline to submit this year has already passed, but it’s never too early to start brainstorming project ideas. You can submit your proposals at SGSonline.org/fprn Get involved in an ongoing study by contacting the appropriate individual listed below: 1. Alumni Spotlight
When I started my AAGL Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY, I knew my program was unique in that nearly 90% of my patients were going to have chronic pelvic pain conditions, and I was going to learn how to approach and treat this challenging condition. This experience has changed the way I practice medicine, both outside and inside the operating room.
Being trained in chronic pelvic pain has opened doors for me as an educator, which is my true passion. Currently I run a cadaveric anatomy lab for both residents and medical students, and have developed a special session for our residents called “Laparoscopic Olympics Day, which has
been very successful. I was also awarded a Dean’s Teaching Fellowship at the University of Rochester, which is a 2-year fellowship that focuses on training healthcare providers in educational theories, teaching methods and curriculum development, developing skills in educational leadership, faculty development and mentoring, and implementing novel educational interventions.
Through this project, I have been able to modify my resident skills teaching sessions in order to apply psychological theories to increase intrinsic motivation and positively impact surgical education. Now in my second year of being faculty, I look back to reflect and feel strongly that these fantastic opportunities came directly from having completed a MIGS fellowship with phenomenal mentors such as Dr. Fred Howard, one of the pioneers in chronic pelvic pain.
Now that you are in your fellowship, my advice would be to make sure you take advantage of all your experiences. Network with your peers and look for that unique thing you love and feel passionate about. It will help you succeed and, most importantly, will help your patients succeed. And teach! One of the most important missions I think we have as AAGL graduates is to effectively transmit our knowledge and skills to change not only our patients’ lives, but residents’, fellows’ and our peers’ lives.
Dr. Carrillo completed his fellowship through the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. AAGL Graduating Class 2014. Dr. Bala Bhagavath, Dr. Amy Benjamin, Dr. Fred Howard, Dr. Joseph Scibetta.
