FMWR Outlook 7
When the holidays roll around, there is no end to the tempting new electronics,
kitchen gadgets, toys, tools and otherwise irresistible goodies that suck shoppers into
a retail frenzy of overspending and overindulging. It is possible to avoid the
temptation and learn how to make and follow a holiday budget. The trick is to plan
carefully, track diligently, and find ways to save on holiday shopping.
A firm resolution to control overspending is not enough. Making a budget for the
holidays is crucial, and requires year-round effort and planning. The whole process
should not begin on Black Friday. Purchasing items off-season can save a fortune.
There are great deals to be had on winter clothing in May and on summer items in
October.
Devising a budget is perhaps the most important part of all. Holidays and birthdays
should be a incorporated as a variable expense in a monthly budget. Figure out how
much can be allocated towards holiday gifts and expenses each month. Multiply that
amount times 12, and that is the total amount budgeted for the holidays.
Using the total amount allocated for the holidays, make a
subordinate budget; a detailed list of planned expenses
within a single budgeted category. Holiday expenses
include more than the cost of gifts for family and friends.
Frequently overlooked items include entertaining,
decorating, seasonal charitable giving, unit and
office parties and traveling are costs that
inevitably surface.
Some costs, like a plane ticket home, are
obvious. Others, like dropping by a holiday
happy hour, just seem to suddenly creep up. For
those who easily get swept up in the festive
holiday spirit, it may even be a good idea to
include those foreseeable holiday impulse
purchases as a category in and of itself.
Don’t Let Christmas Bust Your
Budget!
8 FMWR Outlook
Create a realistic list of all individuals for whom you are planning on buying a
gift. Decide on and write down a dollar limit for each gift for each person on the list.
Make another list of potential gifts for each person, and if done far enough in
advance, bargains can be found year-round.
Talk with extended family and set some rules limiting the maximum amount that
will be spent; chances are they too are on a budget. Consider group gifts among
family members. Homemade gifts often can be inexpensive and meaningful. Many
websites allow users to make digital photo albums that are very time-consuming to
make and might be appreciated more than an expensive item that in reality is not
needed or wanted.
Maintain a thorough record of what has been purchased, for whom, and how much
has been spent. Then, tally what has been spent and how much is left. Keep receipts
and do not remove price tags to preserve the option of returning or exchanging items
in the event that your budget needs adjusting.
Most importantly, remember that friends and family do not expect you to take on
debt to buy them gifts. The dollar amount spent seldom equates with the deeper
meaning of the gift. It really is the thought that counts. Consider this: make it, bake
it, grow it or sew it.

School Age Care Celebrates
MONTH OF THE MILITARY FAMILY
Each SAC child will be given a “Family Box”. Throughout the
month we will complete projects that will highlight what
family means to the children. These projects will be
completed during 4-H Fridays club meetings. Once the
projects are completed the items will be placed in the box.
The children will then have the opportunity to the present the
box to their family during our meal of Thanksgiving hosted by
the 4-H cooking Club.
School Age Center, 764-5297
52 FMWR Outlook
Did you know that the School Age Program is also a
4-H club? On Fridays when the staff and kids take a break from homework, we
celebrate the creativity and diversity of 4-H clubs.
This semester the 4-H clubs are science, cooking and fitness. During our
Friday club meeting children learn and have a great time exploring projects.
They learn how to run a meeting and how to record and document their club
activities, but most of all they have fun exploring and trying new activities
and adventures.
Contact Alan Thomas at 764-5297 to find out how your 1st -6th grader can
participate in 4-H clubs.
