Brown narrowed her choicesdowti to State and Alabama. Alter vis-iting Raleigh. she opted to join thePack. a move she considers "the bestdecision I've ever made in my entirelife."“I came here and had the best coach-ing staff iii the country in itiy opinionsince got here." Brown said. “It‘sbeen more of a dream come true for methan anything. I wasn't that great of ahigh school gymnast: l was OK. Thecoaches here has e made me into a pret-ty good gyiiitiast out of the wholething."Before the start of Brown's freshmanyear. the coaching staff decided to sim-plify her routines. They told Brown topick skills she knew she could performwell and concentrate on fixing those. She wasn‘t entirely receptive to theidea. wanting to continue to do thesatne tricks she had in high school. btitshe understood the rationale.Brown is now reaping the benefits of

that decision.“What it did for me was it tnade metake certain skills and become verygood at them." Brown said. "It made itthat much easier to add skills when Iwanted to.“I now do two releases on bars; myfreshman year. I did one. I do two dou-ble-backs on floor; my freshman year. Idid one. It was a building year thattaught me how to compete."Aside from refitting her skills. Brownalso had to learn how to do somethingshe never needed in club gymnasticsperforming.“College is completely different thanclub." Brown said. “You‘re supposedto show off and dance and have a goodtime. In club. you're supposed to go inthere with a growl on your face. doyour stuff and leave."As Stevenson points out. collegiategymnastics is as much about playing tothe crowd as it is executing difficultskills. especially on floor. Stevensonsaid Brown initially couldn‘t do that.btit over time. she has"I have a tnentality when I go out onthe floor that I‘m supposed to pttt on ashow." Brown said. "It's fun to coni-pete in Reynolds; it‘s fun to compete infront of people. My freshman year. Iwas scared to compete in front of peo-ple. Now. it’s fun. and I‘ve got musicon floor that suits me a lot better thanmy freshman year. so it‘s a lot easier todance to it."The results of Brown‘s work havebeen readily apparent. especially overthe past two seasons. For the first time in her collegiatecareer. Brown competed in the all-around on a consistent basis in 2001.She was a unanimous selection for theAll-EAGL team on vault. bars and theall-around and earned first-team honorson floor.
