    CHAIRMAN’S CHAT

My body is getting very old! I am actually talking about camera body but I

suppose I could just as easily be referring to myself. But this is not about

me, it is about the camera equipment we own and the technical and

psychological effect it has on our hobby. I bought my camera body in 2007.

At that time it was near to the top of the range, everybody bought one. Only

seven years on and it is completely obsolete. The manufacturers won’t even

service or repair it if something were to go wrong. This is very disturbing for

me. I knew of photographers who were still using their Nikon F3’film

cameras20 years after they were bought. The manufacturers would still

repairing them. But since buying my camera, newer and newer models have

been released. The capabilities and specifications of the new models far

exceed my camera. The problem is this – there is nothing wrong with my

camera, it still works fine! The quality of the images are as good as when I

first bought the camera. But I feel intimidated. I get uncomfortable when I

sit in the hide at Rondebult and the guy next to me has the latest 11 frames a

second, 64 000 iso, full frame, magnesium alloy super camera that takes two

memory cards! It has a psychological effect on me. I’m not good enough any

    more. I can’t compete. Depression sets in………!

To add to this, some years ago I also bought a 80-200mm, f2.8 lens. It was

love at first use. It was as sharp as a razor and superbly versatile. I used it

often. It opened more and more doors for me. The quality of my sports

pictures and portraits improved. I got many, many gold awards from it. We

went everywhere together, we shared a deep bond….we were soul mates.

Then, one day, I dropped it! It broke and could not be repaired. Depression

    set in …………!

I managed to find a generic equivalent of the lens, but it just wasn’t the

same. It wasn’t as sharp and the picture quality was poor. I suffered for

    more than a year.

Two weeks ago I found someone selling an 80-200mm, f2.8 genuine, original

lens! Furthermore, the price was pretty good. The seller was in Cape Town

  • 3 | P a g e

and I was travelling there the next week. Everything fell into place. I was

    meant to have it.

I bought it. I am happy again. All of a sudden the depression is gone. I am

inspired to take more pictures. It doesn’t matter that my camera body is 7

years old, it still takes pretty decent images. I am not worried that I don’t

own a new fancy body with all the bells and whistles. Last week I spent some

time in the Drakensberg with my camera and my new (to me) 80-200mm lens.

I had a wonderful time taking pictures. The enjoyment had returned, and

isn’t that what photography is all about. So what if I can’t shoot a black cat

running through a dark alley at 11 frames a second!

See you at the next club meeting.

    Example: 2_na_hornbill_john doe (all lowercase)

Entries must be handed in by no later than 19h20 on the night

    RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE

    1. Select Canvas (Frame) Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop if you wish to add a boarder to the image and make your adjustements. If you do not wish to add a boarder, go to

    Step 2.

    2. Select Image Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop. Tick the following boxes: Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample Image.

    3. The maximum size of the image must not exceed 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. 4. When resizing a horizontal image (Landscape) enter 1920 pixels in the Width Box and the

vertical size will be adjusted automatically if you have ticked the “Resample Image” box. If

the vertical size is 1080 pixels or less, the resizing is correct. If the vertical adjusts to a value

more than 1080 pixels (say 1096 pixels) then adjust the vertical size to 1080 pixels and the

horizontal size will automatically reduce to below 1920 pixels if you have ticked the

    “Resample Image” box.

    5. When resizing a vertical impage (Portrait) enter 1080 pixels in the Height Box. The value in the Width Box will change automatically to match the original image if you have ticked the

    “Resample Image” box.

    6. The maximum image data file size is 1,500Kilobytes in the JPEG format. Note that if a border is added to the image, this must be added before resizing and reducing the file size to a

maximum of 1,500 Kilobytes to ensure that the image remains within the specified 1,500Kb.

    7. It is recommended that the image be displayed in the sRGB Colour Profile. This can be selected in the camera or changed in Photoshop under Edit/Convert to Profile.

Here is a typical procedure to prepare an image for Club

Competitions using Photoshop Elements or Creative Suite.

    1. Complete all editing of the image. 2. It is recommended that the image be displayed in the sRGB Colour Profile. This can

be selected in the camera or changed in Photoshop under Edit/Convert to Profile.

    3. Make sure the image is in JPEG format.

  • 11 | P a g e

    4. Add a boarder if required. Two methods are generally used. Note that the boarder must be added to the image before the final resizing. If you do not wish to add a

    boarder, go to Step 5.

    A) Select Canvas Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop. Choose Pixels and enter the Width, Height and Canva colour and click OK. Typical settings

are shown in the following image.

    B) Click on “Select” and choose “All”. The total image will now have the runnning ants around the image. Click on “Edit” and choose “Stroke”. A

window will appear similar to the following. Enter the “px” size (boarder

thickness) and choose a colour for the boarder and click OK. Go back to

“Select” and click “Deselect” to finalise.

    5. Select Image Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop. Tick the following boxes: Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample Image. A typical

window is as follows from CS4.

    6. First choose the Resolution at 72pixels/cm (Best for viewing on PC and Projector).

    7. The maximum size of the image must not exceed 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high.

    8. When resizing a horizontal image (Landscape) enter 1920 pixels in the Width Box and the vertical size will be adjusted automatically if you have ticked the

“Resample Image” box. If the vertical size is 1080 pixels or less, the resizing is

correct. If the vertical adjusts to a value more than 1080 pixels (say 1096 pixels)

then adjust the vertical size to 1080 pixels and the horizontal size will

automatically reduce to below 1920 pixels if you have ticked the “Resample

    Image” box.

    9. When resizing a vertical impage (Portrait) enter 1080 pixels in the Height Box. The value in the Width Box will change automatically to match the original image

if you have ticked the “Resample Image” box.

    10. The maximum image data file size is 1,500Kilobytes in the JPEG format. Note that if a border is added to the image, this must be added before resizing and

reducing the file size to a maximum of 1,500 Kilobytes to ensure that the image

    HUMOUR

    To Be 8 again!

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who was

looking at herself in the mirror.

Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have for her

    birthday.

'I'd like to be eight again', she replied, still looking in the mirror ..

On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of

Coco Pops, and then took her to Adventure World theme park. What a day!

He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the

Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was.

Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park.

Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down.

He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with

extra fries and a chocolate shake.

Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favourite candy,

    M&M's.

    What a fabulous adventure!

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted.

He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear, what

was it like being eight again?

Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed.

'I meant my dress size, you f@*#*! retard!!!!'

The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is gonna get it

    wrong.
