Foams That Are Used in Marine Industry
Foam is an undercover element, which stiffens, strengthens and softens everything from headliners to seat cushions to
beds.
Various kinds of foams are used in marine industry. In the next slides, you will get to know about them.
Conventional foam is widely available and is economical. It is available in different densities and weights. But there isn’t any standard biocide for mold and mildew prevention.
Closed cell foam is very firm and doesn’t absorb water. It is basically a cross-linked polyethylene, which is quite dense and an old technology for outdoor seating. It offers poor comfort. Life jackets are made from this foam.
Memory foam is made up of high quality chemicals. A wetting agent is added to create air pockets and that
gives the material a slower spring back effect.
High Resilient (HR) foam uses higher-quality chemicals and offers high comfort. HR foam density normally ranges from 1.8 pounds to 2.5 pounds but will last as long as, or longer,
than memory foam.
Reticulated foam foam boasts the same chemical makeup as high resilient foam but includes an added process to expand the cells, making it waterproof. Limited weights and densities are available for reticulated foam. This foam offers good comfort.
EZ-Dri foam available in block form, in sheets or cut to size. It is high priced, offers good comfort and comes standard with biocide for mold and mildew prevention.
