Page 1: Focus group

Focus GroupI gathered a few people who would qualify for my target

audience which is; between the age of 16 and 26, student that are male and female.

I presented them with my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I then let them have a good look at the pages and

asked them a series of questions in order to get feedback from a sample real of my audience. There responses are important to me because it gives me an idea of how my target audience will

react to GOODMUSIC.

Here is the summary of the points that they discussed:

Page 2: Focus group

Front coverAre there any initial comments you have, looking at my front cover?

Good points:

• I like the picture, it's not serious, it's quite funny and unlike usual magazines.

• The title is definitely the first thing that you notice which is good.

• The puffs stand out as well and draw attention to themselves.

• The layout and font is simple and easy to read.

Bad Points

• The cover lines are a bid hard to read when they are on top of her arm.

• There is no indication to me that it is a music magazine, unless I read the header and cover lines.

• The background colour makes it look a quite dull.

• Assault is spelt wrong. No apostrophe on the word what's.

Page 3: Focus group

Front coverDo you think the front cover is suitable and attractive to my target audience (you)?

• Yes, the girl in the photo is young, like us, and looks likeable. I would want to read about her.

• The stories in the cover lines are attractive to people like us and are the sort of stories that I would read in a magazine.

• Young people like us will like a cheap music magazine because often young people have low incomes and budget their spending. So having a cheaper magazine on the market will help them save.

Contents pageAre there any initial comments you have, looking at my contents page?

Good points:

• Sections like features, news and exclusive are clearly separated making the page easy to under stand.

• There is a good colour scheme, kept consistent throughout this page and the front cover.

• I like the way you have abbreviated the header for the contents page.

Bad Points

• No apostrophe on Alexandra's.

• The date isn't the same as on the front cover.

• It looks plain and white, there aren't many pictures and it is less eye catching than it could be.

• It says future albums twice.

• Some of the stories are a little vague, it isn't that clear what they are about, like future albums or '14 festivals. Who's albums are they and what festivals?

Page 5: Focus group

Contents pageDo you think the contents page is suitable and attractive to my target audience (you)?

• In ways, the featured stories interest me mostly, the layout is nice to read and navigate. However, I would find it better looking if there was more colour and pictures.

• It is straight forward and straight to the point, with short sentences and not much writing, our age group will like that because we like things to be easy to read.

• Our generation use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. so they will like to be able to interact with the magazine on those sites. As well as being able to download on app.

Double page spreadAre there any initial comments you have, looking at my DPS?

Good points:

• I like the back ground a lot, you can tell it is her shadow which is clever and I think it's a nice touch.

• The article is well presented. The writing in blue so you can tell it is a question is good.

• The bit at the side about the producer is good, it makes the DPS more dynamic than a just a straight forward block of writing

Bad Points

• Not much going on on the first page. Could do with a picture on there or something.

• I think all the pictures that you have used of the girl are not very suitable for a magazine. She looks like she is just in her normal clothes. She could look more glamours.

• The writing may be a bit hard to read where the background is dark.

• The picture of the boy looks slightly creepy, you could of used a better one.

Page 7: Focus group

Double page spreadDo you think the DPS is suitable and attractive to my target audience (you)?

• Yes, like the contents page it is nicely laid out so can be easily read. Which young people like.

• Saying that, it could be more exiting. More colour, more pictures maybe?

• The content of the article is the kind of stuff I would like to read about sometimes.
