Staying Healthy Over

A healthy lifestyle is necessary at any age, but for those over 50, it’s especially important. As you age, your body changes, and your risk for health problems increases. Fortunately, there are three simple things you can do to lead a healthier and happier life.

Eat Heart HealthyIf high blood pressure isn’t controlled through lifestyle changes and/or medicine, it can lead to stroke, heart disease, eye problems and other serious health issues.

A great way to establish a heart healthy diet is by reducing your sodium intake, which may reduce the risk of high blood pressure. Starting the day with a low-sodium ready-to-eat breakfast cereal is just one way to choose a healthier lifestyle. For example, according to a recent survey, 9 out of 10 physicians recommend Post Shredded Wheat cereal as part of a low-sodium diet to help support healthy blood pressure levels, (based on an online survey of 400 physicians conducted by Wakefield Research. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation).

Enjoy Nutrient-Dense FoodsAs you age, your body needs fewer calories for energy – but still needs the same amount of nutrients. It’s important to make your calories count by eating foods packed with good nutrition such as:

• Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned, frozen – it doesn’t matter. Vegetables are loaded with vitamins and minerals your body needs. • Protein: Add some variety to your diet with delicious protein sourc-es such as fish, beans and peas.• Whole grains: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends at least three servings of whole-grain foods each day (16g per serv-ing or 48g per day).

Get MovingPhysical activity and regular exercise can decrease the risk of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend those 65 years of age or older, who are generally fit, and have no limiting health conditions, try to get:• Two hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking or yoga, and• Muscle-strengthening activities two or more days a week.

You should consult your physician or other health care professional before making changes to your diet or exercise plan to determine what is right for your needs.

In addition to taking up walking or yoga, joining group activities or sports are great ways to keep moving. In 2014, Post Shredded Wheat will be partnering with the National Senior Games to grant 20 seniors the opportunity to participate in their local Senior Games. Those who submit entries will also be asked to sign a petition to get the National Senior Games to add a 20th sport in 2015. To apply and sign the Post Shredded Wheat “Game On” petition, visit www.PostShreddedWheatGames.com.

Taking care of your blood pressure, enjoying healthy foods, and staying active are three steps you can start taking today to help you get and stay healthy for tomorrow.

YOUIf kicking off a life-changing fitness and nutrition program seems daunting, try taking smaller steps to make it feel more manage-able.

Knowing just where to start can be the biggest hurdle, but once you’re on your way, you’ll find yourself on the path to new healthy habits before you know it. Breaking down a whole new lifestyle into week-by-week chunks will not only let you ease in gradually, but also allow you to make meaningful changes right from the start.

Begin by charting out a week-long plan that will make you more conscious of how you approach important elements of your pro-gram including muscle toning, cardio and making nutritious food choices. Here’s a five-day schedule to get you started:

Monday: Start the Week Strong – Kick off the week with a medicine ball workout, which is a great way to work various muscles all at once. Try using a medicine ball with exercises that you’re already familiar with, such as push-ups, lunges or squats, or look up demo videos online to learn some new ways to use the medicine ball.

Tuesday: Turn it Up – Running is a great form of exercise, but it’s important to mix up your cardio workouts to help prevent injury and become stronger overall. Grab your friends and try a cardio-focused class, such as Zumba.

Wednesday: Spruce Up Your Fruit – Working out is key to keep-ing fit, but so is maintaining a healthy diet. When shopping for snacks, make smart choices that taste delicious, such as Dole Fruit in Jars, which provide five servings of all natural, fresh fruit. Try pairing with Daisy Cottage Cheese to spruce up your fruit for a tasty parfait. Simply combine Dole Sliced Peaches, Daisy Low Fat Cottage Cheese and sliced almonds in a small bowl, then drizzle with honey and enjoy.

Thursday: Multi-task – Just because you’re catching up on your favorite TV show doesn’t mean you can’t work out. Clear some space between the couch and TV so you can watch while you do push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks and squats. For extra motivation, leave your fitness tools near the television as a daily reminder.

Friday: Give Yourself a Star – Gold stars aren’t just for class-rooms. At the end of the week, mark each day that you exercised with a star on your calendar. Whether you went for a run, hit the gym or went for a walk with friends, the calendar will be a visual reminder of how often you’ve been working out, and will encour-age you to keep going.

Remember, setting a long-term goal, such as running a marathon or dropping two dress sizes, can help keep you motivated over time, but also remember to celebrate your first mile run or your first five-pound loss. Keep tackling your new program one week at a time, and your goals will easily become reality.

Inimitable Pieces That Evoke Extraordinary Moments

It is passion for gold and enthusiasm for the best craftsmanship – that which transforms a jewel into a work of art.

Its collections are full of iconic jewels that serve as a benchmark for authentic mastery in sculpt-ing gold and achieving a matte-shine combination effect. This savoir-faire along with the generous volumes and detailed carving of the gold bring each piece to life.

For Carrera y Carrera, its link to Spain is essential as a source of inspiration for the development of its collections. The entire creative and development process of each jewelry piece takes place wholly in the Madrid workshop. Each step in the creation of a piece is influenced by the Spanish character that has become one of the fundamental pillars in the evolution of the company’s excel-lent trajectory throughout its history.

Carrera y Carrera endures thanks to a standard of incalculable value – the savoir faire of the nearly 60 jewelers who work in its Madrid workshop, where tradition and the expertise of master gold-smiths are joined together. It is here that each jewelry piece is crafted entirely by hand, giving each one a flawless grandeur.

ReplenishYour Body

www.colgateenamelhealth.com

The environment’s natural elements can take a toll on the body. However, taking time to refill what has been depleted from your body, such as moisturizing skin and hair, can make you feel healthier and more beautiful. A similar approach can also help make your teeth stronger and make your smile healthier.

Though busy days may make extensive health and beauty routines feel unrealistic, there are simple ways to make them more manageable.

• Think of the time you dedicate to taking care of yourself as an opportunity to unwind and relax, rather than a chore or another item to check off that never-ending to-do list.

• Look for activities that deliver in multiple ways, such as yoga, which helps tone your body while giving your mind a chance to slow down and rejuvenate.

• Instead of trying to cram a full body wellness session into a single day, schedule activities that don’t need to be performed daily over the course of a week. Not only does that spread your “you-time” farther, it makes fitting it all in more doable.

While a hectic lifestyle can affect the specifics of your health and beauty routine, the tips below are a great way for nearly everyone to get started:

Exfoliate. Scrubbing away spent skin cells and the dust and grime of daily life from your face and body allows fresh, healthy cells to grow in their place. After exfoliating, make sure to follow up with a quality moisturizer to smooth and replenish the moisture in your skin.

Rejuvenate. Using a hair mask gives your hair a smooth and glossy appearance, making it feel strong. Similarly, regularly applying facial masks also gives the skin a healthy glow and smoother complexion.

Protect. In between visits to the dental hygienist, you can continue to polish and strengthen your enamel at home. One option is Colgate Enamel Health Toothpaste, which helps replenish the natural calcium in your teeth and gently polishes for stronger, healthy enamel.

“By polishing our teeth, hygienists go beyond ‘cleaning’ to remove stains and help smooth out enamel, which prevents bacteria from sticking,” said Kristy Menage Bernie, dental hygienist and Colgate Enamel Health Spokesperson. “By add-ing a toothpaste like Colgate Enamel Health to your morning routine, you can proactively care for your enamel and help maintain the work your hygienist does between visits to help get a beautiful healthy smile.”

Make time for meditation. Take time out of your busy day to sit quietly and mediate. Centering the mind can help relieve stress, improving your overall mental well-being.

Ultimately, setting aside a little time each day to focus on yourself can result in a happier, healthier and more beautiful you.

Born in New York, Tiffany T is an icon for a new era. Amfitheatrof dedicates it to the world’s great cities and the global travelers who gravitate to art and culture—and the edge, where creativity sparks change.

In her new role as Tiffany’s design director, Francesca Amfitheatrof took the measure of the city—its power, energy and daring—and captured it in the graphic Tiffany T.

“ I wanted to create a symbol for modern life and its relentless energy that flows through New York and drives art and culture around the world,” she says. “ This is just the beginning of what I hope to accomplish.”

A trained jeweler and silversmith, Amfitheatrof found her edge in sketches inspired by the newness all explorers seek and the sheer lightness of Tiffany design. Her work was also infused with the spirit of American design that thrives on a bold approach to established traditions. These influences translated into strokes of genius, a flurry of forward motion as rhythmic and effortless on paper as it is in precious metal.

Tiffany artisans are the master builders of Amfitheatrof’s brilliant play of angles and curves. Their skill with 18 karat gold—rose, yel-low and white—and sterling silver gives Tiffany T the strength of architecture with which it travels from chic to sublime. Wide cuffs and minimal bracelets perfectly contour the wrist. Multiple chains of varied lengths and elegant pendants drape the neckline. Rings stack seamlessly and earrings move with grace. Altogether, Tiffany T is a rich mix of options, layered in striking looks of pure ease and sensuality.

Stonesetters bring the light of the finest diamonds and glowing gems to Amfitheatrof’s beautiful beginning as Tiffany’s design di-rector. They are like the capstones of a bejeweled city rising in the night sky, alive with possibility.

This season will be all about cool neutrals and trendy basics taking style to the next level for any office. Combining updated silhouettes and proportions, timeless neutrals and versatile pieces with a twist, Ann Taylor’s Fall A-List celebrates the dualities of the modern woman. Perfectly combining classics that every woman needs from skirts and pants to dresses and topper coats, the Ann Taylor collection plays on runway trends by adding sheer fabrics, piped lines and stripes in slate grays, creams, navy and black tones. "I like to mix different prints or textures within a color family so you can create this high-low look within your outfit. I think this love affair that we're having with blush instantly modernizes and feminizes old classics like black and navy," Creative Director Lisa Axelson says of the new Fall Collection.

SJP Collection Exclusively at Nordstrom, the SJP Collection by Sarah Jessica Parker is a new collection of shoes crafted by artisans in Italy and imported handbags, reflecting Sarah Jessica’s personal looks and feminine style. The line will also feature the “Manhattan” trench coat to complement the collection as a whole.

“I’ve taken inspiration from things in my life such as the grosgrain ribbons I tied in my hair as a girl, to the flower accents from the Sex and the City wardrobe, to references to classic styles from the late 70's and early 80's. I’m a firm believer in quality and timelessness and have created this collection with the hopes that women will love wearing it for years to come,” said Sarah Jessica Parker, President SJP USA LLC. As a reflection of Sarah Jessica’s child-hood, grosgrain ribbon detail is intricately featured on each shoe, emphasiz-ing the feminine design of the collection. With a story behind the name of each shoe, the collection is infused with fashion influences of Sarah Jessica’s life – from “Carrie”, understandably so, after her acclaimed character on Sex and the City to “Maud”, named after legendary designer Maud Frizon. Colors, as Sarah Jessica has often said are “the new neutral” and can be seen in the collection ranging from her spring favorites such as coral, mint, teal and pink, to classic colors including purple, red and navy.

With a wide variety of heel heights, the collection of twenty-five shoes rein-vigorates the classic single sole with a range of silhouettes that fit the styles and personalities of women of all ages. The shoe prices range from $195 to just under $500. The entire shoe collection is made in Italy from high quality leathers and materials. The SJP handbags are functional pieces but with a fun and fashionable twist. They can be carried by the everyday woman on the go and transition easily to night out.

Parker continued her tradition of naming shoes in the SJP Collection after women and men who inspire her. Highlights from the fall collection include:The Blythe Pump, – “Named for the great Blythe Danner, this beauti-ful shoe exudes a sort of sophistication. A metropolitan personality. I’m thrilled with the inky blue and the shoe’s proud silhouette.”The Pat Boot, – “This is my sexy boot. Try getting it off me! I’ll find a reason to wear it as often as possible. Named for Pat Field, who has been an enormous influence on me and millions of others. Without her contribu-tions, Carrie Bradshaw would have been incomplete.”The Serge bootie, – “Named for Serge Normant, [the hair stylist] with whom I’ve worked for 14 years. This style joins the first collection of SJP Collection booties. I love the suede/color combination and how it sits on the leg. And I think it’s very modern.”The Rachel pump, – “Named for my sister. I think this is an exquisite shoe. A great version of a slingback that is wickedly sexy but still ladylike.”

“We’re honored that Sarah Jessica chose to work with Nordstrom to launch the SJP Collection. It has been a true collaboration and a pleasure work-ing together. Sarah Jessica’s aesthetic and style is so inspiring to so many women, and this collection reflects her unique point of view. We can’t wait for customers to see the line. There’s something for every shoe lover and we think they’re going to respond really well,” said Scott Meden, Nordstrom EVP and GMM of Shoes.

GOLDGold and Beauty aren’t always words that you hear paired together, however, the two work wonders together!

Throughout history, gold has been recognized for its luxurious and beautifying properties. Historians have long maintained that Cleopatra slept in a gold mask every night to enhance her bewitch-ing beauty. In ancient Chinese medicine gold was a key to youth, as the queen of the Ch'ing dynasty used a gold massage roller on her face daily. In ancient Rome, gold salves were used for of a variety of skin problems. For centuries, pure gold has been used by the privileged and the wealthy as the secret to more youthful, beautiful skin. OROGOLD Cosmetics – a luxury, anti-aging cosmetics line that restores the youthful appearance of skin - has included 24K gold in their luxurious formula. By adding 24K gold, OROGOLD Cosmetics has made it possible to take advantage of these ancient secrets to their fullest without having to be an actual queen to accommodate it.

The gold in the OROGOLD formula is Colloidal gold, also known as "nano-gold". It is a suspension of sub-micrometer-sized particles of gold in a fluid, both invisible and visible to the naked eye. The ancients, who devoted massive amounts of time and energy to alchemy and labeled the colloidal gold as the “Elixir of Life”, knew the miraculous qualities of gold since the beginning of time. The extremely small particles of gold carry it across the skin barrier and are easily absorbed into your body through the pores of your skin. The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are diminished with each gold application. It also reduces the appearance of sun damage and age spots as well as prevents and maintains moisturized, radiant, healthy looking skin.

As many busy women know, a daily beauty regimen requires effort and time, but it also has a significant payoff. Keep ing your outward appearance healthy and youthful inspires confidence — a glow everyone around you can see.

With convenience and ease in mind, here are a few tips that will keep you looking beautiful this season, without all the fuss or having to break the bank:

Glowing, Vibrant SkinPoor diet, sun exposure and smoking are just a few of the factors that can lead to the fine lines and wrinkles many women work hard to prevent. While everyone would love a quick fix to erase years of skin abuse, there are some tricks to slow down the process.

Covering your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and keeping its damaging ultraviolet rays at bay helps ward off premature aging and helps to preserve the skin. Whether it’s cloudy or sunny, your best defense is to apply sun screen that contains an SPF of 30 or higher. You can further decrease your exposure by use of wide brim hats, baseball caps and other skin-covering clothing. Invest in a quality night cream that works deeply to restore the skin’s appearance as you sleep. Some products offer multiple benefits that firm, improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

The Perfect PoutLike any other part of your skin, lips can become dry and flaky, parti cularly when exposed to harsh weather conditions or extreme settings. Give them proper nourishment and care to keep them smooth, supple and free of cracks and irritation. To exfoliate rough patches and remove dead skin, use natural ingredients right from your kitchen. Simply place a small dab of honey and sugar on your lips and gently rub them together. This proce dure is best before bed time and followed with a thick coating of lip balm. This will penetrate and renew as you sleep and you’ll wake up to plump, smooth and beautiful lips. To maintain lip moisture, invest in a quality lip balm, especially those that pull double-duty and also offer sun protection.

Love Your BodyBy Carrie Myers Smith

While many of us have an easy time showering other people with love, we find that Cupid has yet to hit us with the "body love" arrow. Don’t wait for Cupid! Begin today to start appreciating, accepting and yes, even loving your body.

Stop picking yourself apartLet’s face it: No matter how close-to-perfection body you have (and just what is the perfect body anyway?), chances are, there is something you would change about it if you could. Even celebrities and models who have been stamped with the media’s "perfect body" rating have parts they dislike – their feet, their hands, their ears – and they don’t necessarily have

high self-esteem either! Rather than pick your body apart, look at your body as a whole (and read the next point…)

Consider the marvelous functions of your bodyThere are millions of microscopic functions that go on in our bod-

ies every day, and you don’t even have to think about them. They just happen! Unfortunately, it often takes a crisis or a tragedy, such

as a brush with death, a go-around with a disease, or a debilitating accident for some women to realize that their bodies weren’t so bad

to begin with and that their body hang-ups were a big waste of time. Don’t let that be the case with you! How much time are you spend-

ing each day worrying about your weight, your body shape, the size of your rear? What could you be doing during that time? Maybe you’re

supposed to be the first female president, but you’ll never know because you’re too busy obsessing about your abs!

Get realDid you know that most of the images you see on television, movies and magazines aren’t even real? A model for a magazine cover goes through hours of professional hair and make-up, has professional stylists, top pho-tographers who know her "best side," professional lighting, and that’s all before the chosen photo goes to a company where they remove stray hairs, wrinkles, blemishes and "extra" curves. Sometimes Model A’s head is stuck onto Model B’s body. What you see is totally made up!

And it’s not just fashion magazines that are creating a fantasy. Most of to-day’s "fitness" magazines are following suit. On top of airbrushing and com-puter generating their models, fitness magazines now need to audition their models to be sure they’re strong enough to just do basic exercises! Muscles are even airbrushed in! It’s time to get real! Find real role models who ema-nate the qualities you desire. Educate yourself about what really goes on "behind the scenes." And realize that no one naturally "glows" the way those models in the magazines do!

Change your inner dialogueIt’s been said that we teach others how to treat us. If we believe that, the mes-sage that comes across to others is that we are not worth being liked, loved, or treated with respect. Most of it comes from what we’re not even saying. Choose to believe that you are worth taking care of and that you have the right to be respected and treated with dignity – and act like it!

Take care of your bodyDiets, pills, quick-fixes, binging, not exercising, over-exercising, all these things disrespect one of the greatest gifts you have been given – your body! You only get one per lifetime, so give it the respect it deserves. You will not only feel better, but you just might become someone else’s role model!

Down is nature’s best insulator and offers the sleep inducing benefits of warmth without weight.

The wonderful softness of down and feather pillows feels great and is good for you because it conforms to the body more naturally than many synthetic fibers or foam pillows. This quality has led to the increase in non-traditional pillow shapes for specific types of sleepers—such as those who sleep be st with a large pillow they can “hug”, or the pillows designed for expectant mothers. In a more traditional bed pil-low, the neck and shoulder muscles are less strained as the head is naturally cradled in the down and feather pillow.

Down and feather is a natural material that wicks moisture away and allows it to quickly evaporate rather than trapping moisture. Waking up in the night having to throw off a blanket because of feeling overheated is a thing of the past when your pillow and comforter are made from down and feather.

Dust mite allergies plague at least 10 percent of the population and are a leading contributor to developing asthma. Hypoallergenic down and feather is a good product for allergy sufferers because the natural breathability means that moisture– which dust mites need to live and thrive–is not trapped in the fibers.

Additionally, the fabrics that encase the down and feathers are tightly woven–pos-sessing a high thread count–in order to keep any feathers from escaping. This tightly woven fabric also serves as a barrier to dust mites.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), insufficient sleep is a public health epidemic in the U.S. Further, the CDC says that a lack of sleep makes a person more likely to suffer from other chronic diseases such as diabetes, depression and obesity. How can people help create better sleep habits and lead healthier lives?

The first step is to realize what is keeping them awake. Feeling too hot or too cold? Restless and sore from fidgeting while sleeping? These seemingly trivial discomforts can have adverse effects on sleep and health. Use these tips from the American Down and Feather Council (ADFC) to pick out the right bedding for a night of deep and refreshing sleep.

• Waking up Shivering or Sweating?Down is nature’s best insulator and offers the sleep inducing benefits of warmth without weight. A down comforter with a fill power high-er than 500 will give added warmth, and a down comforter with less than 500 will keep you snug but cool.

• Fidgeting in your Sleep?Look for bedding that is soft and will naturally conform to your body – like down and feather. Down and feather contours and moves with your body as you shift positions, this will keep you from getting tangled up in your sleep.

• Feeling Dirty and Gross?Easily washable, down and feather products are made from natural materials that wick moisture away and allow it to quickly evaporate rather than trapping it close to your body. Sleeping in a moisture-free bed will help you retain a fresh and clean feeling.

• Suffering from Allergies?Plaguing at least 10 percent of the population, dust mites thrive in humid locations and are one of the leading contributors to asthma. Superior construction and breathable materials allow down and feather products to be dust mite free and hypoallergenic.

BreastCancer What You Need to Know

Thirty years ago, a diagnosis of breast cancer was thought of as a virtual death sentence for many women, but since that time significant progress has been made in the fight against breast cancer. Reduced mortality, less invasive treatments, an increased number of survivors and other advancements have their roots in breast cancer research – more than $790 million of it funded by Susan G. Komen, the world’s largest breast cancer organization.

However, the reality is that breast cancer is still a serious disease. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held each October, brings awareness to the disease and empowers women to take charge of their own breast health.

This year, about 200,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the U.S. and nearly 40,000 wom-en will die from it. Globally, 1.6 million people will be diagnosed, and 400,000 will die. Despite the increased awareness of breast cancer, major myths still abound. Women must remain vigilant against this disease by learning the facts and understanding how they may be able to reduce their risk.

The Myths and Facts on Breast Cancer

Myth: I’m only 35. Breast cancer happens only in older women. Fact: While the risk increases with age, all women are at risk for getting breast cancer.

Myth: Only women with a family history of breast cancer get the disease. Fact: Most women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease. However, a woman whose mother, sister or daugh-ter had breast cancer has an increased risk.

Myth: If I don’t have a mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, I won’t get breast cancer. Fact: You can still get breast cancer, even without a gene muta-tion. About 90 to 95 percent of women who get breast cancer do not have this mutation.

Myth: Women with more than one known risk factor get breast cancer. Fact: Most women with breast cancer have no known risk factors except being a woman and getting older. All women are at risk.

Myth: You can prevent breast cancer. Fact: Because the causes of breast cancer are not yet fully known, there is no way to prevent it.

Actions to Reduce Your Risk

Breast cancer can’t be prevented; however, research has shown that there are actions women can take to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.

• Maintain a Healthy Weight – Postmenopausal women who are overweight have a 30 to 60 percent higher breast cancer risk than those who are lean. • Add Exercise into Your Routine – Women who get regular physi-cal activity may have a lower risk of breast cancer by about 10 to 20 percent, particularly in postmenopausal women. • Limit Alcohol Intake – Research has found that women who had two to three alcoholic drinks per day had a 20 percent higher risk of breast cancer.• Breastfeed, if you can – Research has shown that mothers who breastfed for a lifetime total of one year (combined duration of breastfeeding for all children) were slightly less likely to get breast cancer than those who never breastfed.

Advice from a D.O. Specialist

Nobody ever wants to hear the words, “You have cancer. I’m sorry.” Cancer affects people daily and does not discriminate. The natural inclination in conjunction with the fear, shock and the unknown after receiving a cancer diagnosis is to sort out all viable options, including seeking the best medical advice and treatment from a compassionate, caring doctor who is equally determined to fight for quality longevity.

Eric T. Lubiner, D.O., Board Certified Physician in Medical Oncol-ogy, Hematology & Internal Medicine is one of five partners at Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute with two loca-tions in Port Charlotte and North Port, Florida.

Before making his way to South West Florida in 2000, the good doctor was busy building an impressive academic resume. He earned a Doctoral degree and worked as a nuclear medical tech-nologist before going to medical school. He took up dentistry and completed his Residency in Hematology Medical Oncology.

Traditional

By Gina Battle

“A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is a Dr. with a medical degree who has taken all the courses of a medical student plus, “on top of all those courses is Osteopathic Principles and Prac-tice.” There, in lies the distinction. It’s manipulation. According to the doctor, many D.O.s view it as a tool to aid in the “manipu-lation” of the whole body, spine, lymphoid, and soft tissue. This is a learned specialty. Not every D.O. uses it.” Manipulation is a complimentary or cooperative method to the traditional treat-ment in oncology that gives a more holistic approach to treating the patient. With that said, one might ask how is the manipula-tion of utilizing the whole body, spine, lymphoid, and soft tissue helpful in aiding a cancer patient.

Manipulation is beneficial to patients because every disease – cancer in particular is based on the anatomy, where the can-cerous tumor is located in the body and other areas it may possibly affect. There are clinical trials that show if something in your stomach is bothersome the issue could very well have manifested or be in the area of the back. The symptoms can be multifaceted and can include many variables and it is the posi-tion of the D.O. to learn very quickly, probably more so than an M.D. the location it began and “what it stems from”. Dr. Lu-biner has observed “D.O.s make very good oncologists because oncologists are really the primary care physician’s link to the patient.” Once someone has a diagnosis of cancer the oncolo-gist or D.O. takes over and the patient along with the specialist will build a quick rapport through consultation, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments; often times resulting in less frequent visits to the primary physician, if at all. However, this is not recommended.

The word cancer has the power to evoke incredible pain and emotion. There’s no cure for cancer. It is often detrimental for patients, their families and caregivers. Researchers are making daily strides toward a cure. There are many things we as lay-people are still unaware of.

• It’s a natural occurrence for the cells in our body to become tissue, then to become organs during the process of in utero development. That’s considered following the rules. Sometimes cells break the rules.

Researchers are targeting cells and mutations in order to get further knowledge about them. The targeted mutations and the effects they cause will allow researchers to understand how the cells break the rules. Once this is found out they will be prevented from having the ability to travel to the lung, liver, pancreas or other organs growing and spreading uncontrollably.

• Every cell in our body has a lifespan. They turn three times a day in a 24-hour period. • The brain and nervous system never turn over. When people say they have a brain tumor, it’s a tumor of the neurons (a tu-mor of the supporting cells.)• Cancer is not just one disease it is made up of over 100 dis-eases. Think about the various types of blood, bone, internal organs, brain and skin cancers you may have heard about.• Cells divide hundreds of billions of times in one’s lifetime. Once a cell divides there’s a chance for the mutation of a cell.

This may all sound daunting, but there’s no need to panic. Most of the mutated cells end up dying immediately as they are not comparable with being persistent.

So, what is the number one risk factor of cancer… smoking, genetics, radiation, or asbestos? The doctor answered readily

“Age. The longer you’re on the planet, the longer you will have the chance that one of these things will go wrong.”

“I feel very strongly about all of those things and I spend time talking to my patients. They are all very important!”

Not surprising Dr. Lubiner is highly sought after throughout SW Florida because he is a D.O. “Taking care of cancer patients is a very humbling experience and I give a lot of credit to the patients and families who have to deal day-to-day; to my part-ners; to our staff of 42 from the front-desk greeter to the eight full-time RN’s.

If Dr. Lubiner were to write a prescription for the prevention of cancer, he would strongly insist on the following:1. Have and maintain a positive attitude! He’s seen Stage-4-to-remission patients in part due to a resilient attitude.

2. Seek the help of a specialist. Don’t attempt your own treatment methods.

3. Be cautious when it comes to diagnosing yourself on the Internet. He suggests websites such as The American Cancer Society (He’s a board member of ACS & Relay for Life). Another website to visit is The National Cancer Institute. These types of resources are valu-able and reliable.

4. A D.O. is a little bit more holistic in their approach and do bring in other aspects of care including nutrition, exercise and positive thinking (attitude.)

5. It is imperative to be honest and open with the D.O. about your outside complimentary/cooperative treatment plan.

Save on Costly Engine Repairs

The sticker on your car’s windshield serves as a constant reminder that every car eventually has to be taken to get its oil changed. Go too long and a bright red indicator light will also start demand-ing attention.

If you’re ever tempted to ask if all of those oil changes are really necessary, consider the important work oil performs for your engine.

Keep your motor runningMotor oil lubricates and cools the moving parts in your car’s engine. Without clean oil your engine’s metal-on-metal compo-nents can grind against each other, causing extensive wear. So, not having clean oil and the proper amount of oil can have serious consequences.

Even if oil is present, there’s no guarantee it will properly protect an engine against damage. If you decide to forego changing the oil according to your car’s maintenance schedule, dirt, sludge and varnish can build up leading to serious damage or, even, an engine replacement.

Take time for a changeExtended oil change intervals are the number one cause of sludge and varnish build up. Motor oil degrades over time due to heat, pressure and contamination. Check the owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended oil change interval for your vehicle and remember, oil is the lifeblood of your engine.

Conventional oil changes leave as much as 10 to 20 percent of metal wear particulates, dust and other contaminants behind.

Using an oil system cleaner, like Synergyn XTrA MPG Oil Change System Cleaner a day before any routine oil change will provide a more complete cleaning of your oil system helping to eliminate out unwanted metals, gums and varnishes that can lead to oil contamination. One day prior to your next oil change, just add the oil change system cleaner, and then change the oil and filter.

Inspect for potential problemsMost cars are designed for easy oil change maintenance so if you don’t change your own oil, take this product to your professional service installer. Those who like to do the job themselves should always pop open the hood and inspect the car for fluid levels and leakage, cracked or frayed belts and bulging hoses.

Next, inspect for broken or worn parts that can’t be seen from above. For protection from other issues that can’t be seen, add the oil change system cleaner a day before changing the oil. It frees sticky valves and lifters, cleans gum and varnish from internal parts, improves oil circulation, increases lubricity, reduces friction, restores engine performance, and improves fuel economy. After that, add Synergyn XTrA MPG Engine Treatment when you change your oil and filter and let your engine run for 20-30 min-utes to let the engine treatment circulate in your car’s oil system. Finally, don’t forget to rotate the tires after every third oil change.

Visit any reputable auto repair garage or lube shop to have all of these inspections and maintenance tasks performed during your car’s oil change. They’ll also dispose of the dirty, used oil for you.

With reports of the unemployment rate dropping to 7 per-cent, lower than it was even five years ago and down from a peak of 10 percent in October 2009, many are breath-ing a sigh of relief. But the effects of a long bout of high unemployment are sure to have thrown off the balance of employee well-being, says former Exxon executive Bob Epperly.

“Of course, the rate does not take into account those who are underemployed, including over-skilled workers in menial jobs and those with too few hours. For those lucky enough to have decent employment, many feel insecure and are willing to skew their work-life balance into a tailspin, with exaggerated emphasis on their career,” says Epperly, a CEO who realized at age 55 that even a very successful career cannot fulfill every aspect of life.

“Most people cannot afford to simply refuse the demands of their job, so what’s a worker to do?”

Epperly, author of “Growing Up After Fifty: From Exxon Executive to Spiritual Seeker,” offers tips for correcting lifestyle imbalance.

• It’s never enough. Ambition is admirable, but if it’s all that drives you, no matter how much you accomplish, it will never be enough. If professional ambition is more impor-tant to you than anything else in your life, that’s a red flag that your life is dangerously unbalanced. The consequences will be painful feelings of emptiness, lack of fulfillment, and having missed out. Take steps now to restore balance, beginning with personal, non-work relationships.

• No one ever says, at the end of their life, that they should have worked longer and spent less time with family. When it’s all said and done, life is short, and many realize that time is life’s most precious resource. Intense fo-cus on work tends to deprive professionals of opportunities with their loved ones – moments and memories that cannot be replaced. Set goals for how much time you’ll spend giv-ing your family 100 percent of your attention each day and week, and stick to them!

• Make communication a top priority! The importance and value of real communication cannot be overempha-sized. “More important than speaking is listening,” Epperly says. “My relationships immediately improved when I be-gan listening very carefully to what was being said.”

• Only you are responsible for your life. The Serenity Prayer goes a long way in work-life balance; it reads: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Epperly says that recognizing he is responsible for his life and focusing on the aspects of it over which he has influence while recognizing those he needs to let go has been pivotal.

• Accept who you are. This can be challenging; it de-mands courageous self-reflection and letting go of the need for external approval. “When a friend asked me, ‘Do you think the world is ready to accept Bob Epperly just as he is?’ I suddenly saw that I had always felt I had to accom-modate; that I wasn’t okay as I am,” he says. “I started to give myself permission to be me.”

Car Shopping Made Easy The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year to purchase a new car. While driving one off the lot can be exhilarat-ing, many consumers wonder if they bought the perfect car at the best price. For those looking to add a new automobile under their tree, there are a few factors to consider.

There is a little-known way for consumers to purchase the car of their dreams – through an automotive rewards card. A recent sur-vey found that that only 5 percent of consumers have a rewards card with automotive benefits, meaning most Americans may not even be aware of this type of credit card reward. Of course, the best way to make sure you’re getting the most for your money is by conducting a little research before ever starting the buying process.

After all, car buying is fun when you know exactly what you want, how much it will cost and how you’re going to pay for it. Here are a few things to consider before you step on to a car lot.

Figure out what you can afford: Buying a new car can be one of the biggest purchases most people ever make. Some experts suggest capping your car payment at no more than 20 percent of your monthly take home pay. You can keep the cost down by looking for dealer sales and other savings options, like the GM Card from Capital One. The card allows users to accumulate earnings and redeem them towards the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle. Consumers earn 5 percent on their first $5,000 worth of net card purchases annually and an unlimited 2 percent on all other purchases. Car buyers are offered value, simplicity and the ability to earn and use rewards with no expiration and no limits on how much they can apply to-ward their new GM automobile. To learn more about the new GM Card from Capital One, visit www.capitalone.com/gmcard.

Narrow down your choices: Although a sporty two-seater might be the perfect choice for a single driver, families might be equally as thrilled with a brand new crossover or sedan. When looking for

a car, write down what’s important to you. Consider such things as seating capacity, gas mileage, safety and performance. Armed with this list, you’ll be able to narrow down your choice to that perfect set of new wheels.

Get the best deal: Any major purchase requires keeping an eye on the bottom line. Follow the automotive section of your local newspaper or get on the Internet to find the best sales. You should also look for incentives and rebates to lower the car’s cost. Another savvy money saving idea is to cash in the rewards you’ve accumulated on your credit card. For example, the GM Card from Capital One comes with no annual fee and offers no limits and no expirations on the rewards consumers can accumulate towards the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadil-lac vehicle. According to Capital One’s survey, nearly 60 percent of consumers who hold an automotive reward card have unused earnings. For of those who like to let rewards build up, and are in the market for a new car, using the GM Card from Capital One is a great way to earn cash rewards and add some extra savings for your down payment. Another perk to the GM Card from Capital One is that it also comes with World Elite MasterCard benefits ranging from upscale travel enhancements, to security and pro-tection benefits, to VIP experiences and concierge services.

Explore your options: Few aspects of the car buying process are more fun than looking at all the bells and whistles. Luxurious upholstery, power locks, remote keyless entry and heated mirrors are some conveniences many new car owners wouldn’t want to live without. Others may covet DVD systems, high-tech audio equipment, satellite radio, hands-free phones or navigation sys-tems built into the dash. Make a list of your must-haves.

Before you step onto the showroom floor, it’s important to know exactly what kind of car you need, how much you want to spend and what options you consider necessities. Armed with this knowl-edge, you can then negotiate the best price and ride off in the car or truck of your dreams.

We’ve all heard the expressions about the importance of attitude: “Check yourself before you wreck yourself” . . . “Mind over mat-ter” . . . “A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks” . . . But is attitude adjustment really possible? If so, does it last?

Recent brain research shows that we can literally rewire our brains by choosing to view things in a more positive way. When we react to external situations by focusing on what’s wrong, we trigger a negative emotional response, like anger, frustration, self-pity, or blame. If we instead choose a sunnier interpreta-tion, we not only feel better in the moment, but we also create new neural pathways that help us to react more positively in the future.

Last week, I had a chance to practice this skill when I dropped a full pitcher of water by my fridge. In the past, my first reac-tion would have been, “Oh man, I don’t feel like dealing with this right now!” Instead, I just mopped it up and laughed, “Well, that’s one way to clean the floor.”

Meanwhile, for those of us who are used to making things hap-pen, trying to stay positive can be very difficult when we’re not in control. I find this to be especially true when I experience an unpleasant or unexpected life change or when I’m waiting to hear back about something important.

A couple of suggestions from my “How to Be Happy Even When Life is Crappy: 32 Tips & Quips to Get You There”:

• Think like a Spaniard. In Spanish, the word esperar means both to wait and to hope. Instead of clinging to specific outcomes and timing, have faith in “this or something better.”

• Correction, not rejection. When things don’t work out, its just not where you belong.

When I was a teenager, I used to watch my older sister get ready to go out. One evening, she had a fight with her boyfriend and slammed down the phone. Without another word, she put on a stylish outfit, smiled at herself in the mirror, then strutted out of the room. She turned around and winked, “It’s all in the ‘tude.”

Attitude. If I’d only known then how important it is.

Recently, I presented a seminar in Longboat Key. While we were talking about the power of positive thinking, a woman in the audience raised her hand and asked, “But how is it possible when really bad things happen in our lives? It just doesn’t seem realis-tic in more challenging circumstances.”

I told her about my favorite aunt. After working for twenty-five years in a stressful, high-powered law firm, Brenda had just retired and was looking forward to some well-deserved vaca-tion and leisure. Two weeks later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I visited her in New York when she was in the throes of radiation and chemo, going through continuous rounds of brutal, draining treatments that would knock anyone down in the dumps. Instead, the whole time we were together, she laughed and joked, happier than I’d ever seen her. When I asked her how she could possibly be so cheerful given all that she was going through, she said, “Laurie, I could go any day now. And I sure as heck am not going out in a bad mood.”

Ten years later, while her doctors use the word “remission,” Brenda triumphantly tells people that she “survived.” In my opinion, she more than survived. She’s a shining example of how changing your attitude changes your life.

One last story from my new book, The Road to Shine. Navigat-ing through fifty countries and forty states, extreme wilderness adventures, and life’s normal ups and downs, I learned again and again the power of adjusting my attitude. My biggest a-ha occurred in Italy:

“Che brutto giorno!” (“What an ugly day!”) exclaimed the hotel maid, dragging on her cigarette as she looked out at the pouring rain.

Rosario and I disagreed. Laughing as we splashed through the puddles, we jumped from doorstep to doorstep, stopping to embrace and kiss under each dry alcove. We arrived at his car, cranked up the stereo, and danced and sang while the storm crashed all around us.

An ugly day? Not at all. That was one of the best days I’d had in a while.

Ever since we met, I was struck by how happy Rosario is. Rowing a boat across the beautiful turquoise bay, he told me how much he enjoyed his job, appreciated his family, and loved living by the sea. He could view his life differently: “I’m almost thirty and still single, and my job takes me away from family and friends.” Instead, he sighed contentedly, “Il mio cuore è veramente pieno di gioia.” (“My heart is truly full of joy.”)

At first, I thought he might just be simple-minded: How could someone be so upbeat all the time? But as I got to know him, I realized that his happiness is genuine. He lives fully in each moment, appreciates the simple things in life (as well as the complex), and often bursts into spontaneous play.

In one week, I learned more about true joy from this young Sicil-ian than I had in my entire life so far. The guy has simply decided his time on this planet is going to be fun. He’s not naïve to the struggles around him, nor free from struggle himself. He just chooses to approach life with a positive attitude.

Somehow, we’ve convinced ourselves that joy is something we have to spend a lifetime working toward. But even by diligently chipping away at our negative habits and thoughts, we might never get a piece of that all-elusive happiness.

What if it’s a lot simpler than that? What if it’s a lot more fun? What if, like Rosario, we decide that happiness is possible right now?

Horrible rainstorm or private dance party? It’s our decision.

If you have yet to meet the newest cast member of the BRAVO TV Network franchise, “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”, Season 4, which premiered November, 2013, then you haven't met Joyce Giraud. This lovely, ac-complished actress, producer, director, and philanthropist, is a beauty queen, wife and mother.

Most young girls dream of being swept off their feet, whisked away to adventures unknown, or daydream about living a glamorous lifestyle derived from Hans Christian Anderson fairy-tales. One would think Joyce is living out her childhood dreams. Oh, quite the contrary. In Puerto Rico, at age 16, this once upon a time, self proclaimed, 'dangly and awkward' teenager was “discovered,” plucked from obscurity at the drive-thru window of her fast food job at a KFC restaurant.

Asked on the spot of the fast food chain if she wanted to be a model, Joyce was naturally hesitant. “I don't model. I'm too skinny.” The mans persistence eventually paid off. “He offered me $500 to come to a test shoot. I showed up with my entire family for protection, because I didn't know... I'd heard all kinds of stories about different models. Initially, I thought, 'No, no!' Eventually, I went with my mother, and my uncle, and another uncle, and a cousin. I was very lucky, right after that came a whole lot of other opportunities, and they were very lucrative.” Joyce was in disbelief. “I get paid to feel pretty. It's not so bad. Let's do this! Why not?”

After graduating high school at 16, then paying for her college education with the substantial amount of money she made from modeling, the path actually started to take shape. That's when Joyce determined she would acquire dual Bachelor's degrees, acquiring them by age 19. It made perfect sense that taking ad-vantage of furthering her education was ideal. Pursuing university degrees would undoubtedly have been an incredible financial burden on her family. “I was able to pay for school and was able to help my mother a little bit.”

Never missing a beat, Joyce continued modeling while working in social work for a year in Puerto Rico. “My practice was my own, and it was beautiful. It was an experience that I will never forget. I love when people asked, 'Why did you study that and you're not going to work in it?' She's firm with her answer, “I think social work is something that I can use on a daily basis in general.” Joyce reiterates, “For me, it was such a beautiful career path and I have no regrets."

After leaving her respectable practice, one thing led to the next and she became immersed in modeling reaching the pinnacle of being an international top model. Commercials would soon follow, 'with countless national and international magazine covers' and campaigns to her credits.

While on assignment on a photo shoot, she was encouraged to enter a pageant. Once again, she declined not realizing this would be a natural fit. Little did she realize that when she did agree, it would turn the tide, becoming the first of many pageants, and taking home the crown. Joyce's pageant titles/wins include:

Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico

Titles:• Miss Mundo de Puerto Rico (1994)• Miss Aguas Buenas Universe (1998)• Miss Universe Puerto Rico (1998) (Runner-Up)

Major Competition:• Miss World (1994) (Winner)

This would certainly become the platform she needed to exercise her own voice, to go further, work with different charities, to ig-nite her career. Additionally, this would be the time she would also “discover her love for acting.” As a young child, it hadn't crossed her mind to act. As it happened, according to the actress, after the Miss Universe competition, she was called for an audition.

The enchanting beauty queen, with a sense of humor, poking fun at herself, candidly revealed a story of her naivety during the first film audition of her career. Joyce was frequently receiving calls from a local director. Confiding in her mother, she asked what he wanted? Her mother said, “I don't know.” The beauty queen was unfamiliar with his request to come in to 'read'. Not realizing it was an audition, she thought, why would I need to prove to him that I can read? I am a woman holding two Bachelor's degrees! Does he think I can't read, just because I'm a beauty queen?”

Nevertheless, she went – still unaware this was an audition for a part in a film. As it happened, she was touched by the character's predicament, which made her cry at just the right time. Cut! You have the part.” said the director. “What?!” Joyce couldn't believe it. Understandably, as an untrained actress she was overwhelmed and excited, and asked the director for his help and guidance. He told her all she had to do was learn her lines; she wouldn't need his help. He told her that she would do great! “Because other people believed in me, I felt I would be able to deliver.” Joyce said. Well, it shouldn't be a surprise to read, Joyce won an award for that performance. At that point she was hooked. “I think I like this acting thing.”

Of course, this would catapult her into Hollywood where she would have opportunities to pursue her new passion. Again, Joyce felt blessed. There was never any doubt, she would immerse herself in studying acting – given the chance. It would prove to be a key component before making the final decision to go all the way to becoming a Hollywood actress. This meant taking every style of acting class available. That doesn't come cheap. So how would she accomplish this goal? An opportunity, similar to a 'Star Search' show, in Hawaii, came up that her agency told her about, that would provide either great exposure or the top prize. Either way it would be a win-win. Was there any doubt, Joyce did win the substantial top prize. Now with her golden ticket in hand, off to Hollywood she went to take the desired classes and has been a working-actress, working along side great actors ever since. “I'm very happy being a working actress.”

Some of the roles from television and film include, but are not limited to, “Baywatch: Hawaii” with David Hasselhoff, Tyler Perry's “House of Payne,” she's had a role in David Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO/Daniel Craig & Mara Rooney, MISS CASTAWAY/Eric Roberts & Michael Jackson, Disney's “The Suite Life of Zach & Cody,” playing Matt LeBlanc's girlfriend on the show “Joey.”

Joyce Giraud, is just like any of us 'real housewives of... (name your city),' with a few perks. She's beautiful, intelligent, entrepre-neurial, spiritually grounded, and she's a multifaceted talent. As an example, Joyce and her husband, Michael O'Hoven, Academy Award nominated producer, named Hollywood's “Most Prolific Producer, by 'Hollywood Reporter', share portions of their life together on the TV screen in front of millions of viewers. In ad-dition, they work side-by-side on various entertainment projects. She's the lead in the NBC faux-reality scripted drama “Siberia” Season 1, which they both produced.

When asked if being together constantly is ever a concern of hers, Joyce doesn't hesitate to say, “I am happily married to my soul-mate. We love being together.” Considering all of Joyce's accolades, gushingly, she concedes her most impressive accom-plishment is having met and married “the man of my dreams, and our two beautiful children, so I'm a mommy and that's the most important thing.” Joyce doesn't seem to have any trouble balanc-ing her career and family. They love and support each others desires and life's purpose. They take their little boys Leonardo (4) and Valentino (2) everywhere, each gathering one.

Reflecting back on her life, Joyce has to pinch herself and says, “Thank you, God!” because she has such a blessed life. As a result, of the happiness she exudes, some people wonder if the happiness is real or faux. Can it be that Joyce is just enjoying the benefits of sharing and loving? “If you're happy, you don't let negativity bring you down. When you look around at the rest of the world, where there might be plenty to complain about, our complaining might just be petty. Why should I complain? I just thank God and pray that I can continue to be happy. If you're happy, you want others to be happy too.”

Joyce is proud of the rise to her successes. “At this stage of my life, I feel the most fulfilled.” No one can argue, there's no fear when it comes to challenging herself to exceed expectations. Joyce is a mentor, who currently utilizes her expertise in beauty pageants to cultivate leadership for young women globally.

Unfortunately, Joyce was teased a lot during her formidable teen years. Perhaps, that's where she derived some of her vision of “giving a voice to the voiceless." This progressive forward-thinking lady has managed to change the face of beauty pag-eants with the inception of the international pag-eant Queen of the Universe. Joyce is elated to say prior contestants call her to share they've opened up their individual charities.

Are you wondering how this pageant differs from others? Queen of the Universe, 'provides women across the globe, regardless of marital status, moth-erhood or sexuality, with an opportunity to promote their charity work while providing a platform to materialize their dreams' – just like the creator of the organization has done for herself. “One very important thing to know is that the women must have a charity based platform. In my case, mine is UNESCO. United Nations Education Science & Culture Organization (UNESCO) promotes educa-tion within impoverished areas. I'm on a show ('RHOBH'), that besides all the drama, I'm able to have a voice to promote our children's charity.

When asked about how Joyce feels about the other cast members' of the 'RHOBH'? Joyce was surprised after meeting some of the cast mem-bers. “I had no idea what the rest would be like. Kyle, I really like her; she's a good dear friend. As an audience member, I didn't think I was going to like Kyle. But, she's a very sweet girl. Lisa is great. Kim is great. However, my relationship with some of the others ladies... I admire all of the ladies, they’re all good at what they do. They're all strong women, and I admire strong women in general. I don't admire when people lie. I don't like arro-gance and trying to act as though they're above the rest of the world. So unfortunately, these are qualities I've seen in some of the other ladies I didn't mention. I won't name names. I can't lie to the audience and say 'Oh yeah, she's wonderful. Some of these ladies I thought I would like, as an audience member. It was a tough reality when they were entirely different from what I watched on the show. Honesty is what you get with this RHOBH cast member.

Naturally, it is ones inclination to suggest such a success story can only happen to a select few. One might think, it's not something that is destined to happen to the normal everyday person. Joyce would counter that with “We must try our hard-est.” She goes on to say, "Have I told the inner self that I love her today? If the answer is yes, than I'm okay. If the answer is no, then I have to fix my life.”

Advice from Joyce:A. Study your craftB. Remain true to yourself – you're you! C. Do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life.

Summer may have come and gone, but the fashion industry in Colombia kicked into high gear to bring the world something new and fresh. Who said venturing out of your local area wouldn’t be exciting. In one of my travels this year to Colombia, a place filled with passion. I’ve taken in one of its most talked about business & fashion events running over five years long, “The Ibagué Maquila and Fashion Show”, is one of the main events of the fashion business in Colombia each year.

Started back in 2009 to help entrepreneurs in the industry to not only get started, but build and ad-vance modernization within Colombia. Understanding the explosive global economic market over the years; the Ibagué Maquila and Fashion show was created to showcase Colombia’s passion within the textile and ap-parel industry, on a local and global level.

This statement may well be this season’s most over-used word. We keep hearing it in reference to fashion – usually applied to how well it all pulls together. From pouty lip- colored a vibrant red, link necklaces with precious materials, handbags made from faux, down to black patent shoes.

We even have the boot cut pants, skinny jeans or that velvet dress, but more ambi-tious symphonic blends of leather or boldly shaded fabric trim.

What all the above statements seem to be saying is: “I’m hip, I’m trendy, yet I don’t want to break the bank in order to be fashionable; “a laudable sentiment in these days of modest economic recovery.

More importantly it’s about wearing you- your style… your statement!

Everyone wants to start the year off well-organized. January is around the corner and time for the obligatory New Year’s Resolu-tions. If one of yours is to get your home organized, the home organization specialists at Tailored Living offer these 10 solutions to help you maximize your space and reduce clutter

1. Murphy BedsIdeal for lofts, studios or multifunction rooms, murphy beds provide a convenient solution to creating more open space and organizing a room. Murphy beds can be effortlessly pulled down from their wall units at bedtime and be raised and concealed in the mornings to open up a room. 2. Under Bed Storage Remove large storage furniture like armoires and dressers and opt instead for a platform bed and add rolling under-bed storage drawers that can hold clothes and other belongings. 3. Vertical shelvingBathrooms and closets have notoriously underutilized vertical spaces. Customized vertical shelving can allow placement of bins and baskets to provide easy access to items and free up prime horizontal space. Place everyday items at eye-level, and less used items on the upper shelves, such as guest towels and bulk soap packages.

4. Clothing ValetsEspecially useful in narrow closets, clothing valets allow several garments to be hung at once while consuming minimal real estate on walls that cannot accommodate a standard hanging rod. Short on wall space? Closet valets also work well on doors. There are various options available like wall mount valets and retractable valets. 5. Electronics ShelvingLarge electronics such as printers, fax machines, and speakers can eat up valuable real estate in small offices. Move everything possible to wall storage. When installed professionally, mounted shelving can hold a surprising amount of weight. Start the lowest shelf 20 inches above the desk surface so items you use often are within easy reach while working. 6. Pull-out BinsMany an item has been lost in the dark abyss of deep shelves or drawers. Pull-out bins allow maximum use of storage space while maintaining the ability to bring all stored items into view when needed. Ideal for small snack items in pantries or small toys in children’s closets, pull-out bins help keep pile-prone items more organized.

7. Under Desk CabinetsSmall dorm or office spaces can be difficult to organize. Make your job easier with under desk cabinets. These smaller sized cabinets neatly tuck in under a desk to take advantage of the extra space found there. They also come with wheels for easy maneuvering. Use them to store school supplies, files and other appropriate articles. 8. Shoe CubbiesShoes can create a lot of clutter and can sometimes be hard to find. Space-saving shoe cubbies solve both problems by gathering your shoe collection in a centralized location and displaying them in easy to access slots. Shoe cubbies are versatile, being able to accommodate athletic shoes or boots, and are small enough to place either in the closet or entryway. 9. Ceiling StorageGarage ceilings are vastly underused storage spaces, perfect for sports equipment or seasonal items. A bike hoist stores bikes off the ground utilizing a pulley system that maintains easy access for everyday use. Overhead storage safely holds boxes for less frequently used items like holiday decorations. 10. Pull-out Canvas HamperThere are few things that produce more clutter than scattered clothing. An easy fix is a drawer with a pull-out canvas hamper that can be used to store dirty clothes until it’s time to do laundry. Drawers can be neatly tucked away in closets and pull-out ham-pers have two handles that allow you to easily carry your clothes to the laundry room.

Outdoor Stain BustersEngaging in outdoor activities are a great way for families to stay active and spend quality time together, but between tree-climbing, nature hikes, and backyard barbecues, outdoor adventures can lead to piles of dirty, dingy and stained clothing.

Unwanted stains from dripping ice cream cones to grass and dirt can easily find themselves on unsuspecting clothing, and espe-cially stand out on white and light-colored apparel.

Stain Fighting TipsMaintaining bright, spot-less clothing doesn’t have to be com-plicated. Get your family’s wardrobe into shape with these stain fighting tips:

• Act quickly when stains occur: If possible, begin treating the stain immediately. For stains on the go, try applying club soda with a clean white cloth napkin. If none is available, just try and keep the spot wet with an ice cube until you can get home and wash.

• Don’t let laundry sit in the hamper: As a general rule of thumb, the longer the stain sits, the harder it will be to remove. Ensure stained clothing makes its way to the laundry room, rather than sitting in your child’s bedroom or hamper for several days.

• Soak clothes for best results: Remove tough stains with little effort by pre-soaking colorfast clothing overnight in a solution of OxiClean™ White Revive™ Laundry Stain Remover and warm to hot water. The color-safe solution cleans fibers and helps maintain and revive dingy whites without chlorine, harsh smells, yellowing or color damage.

• Add a scoop to the wash cycle: For stain fighting action, add a scoop of OxiClean™ White Revive™ to every wash load or toss in a pre-measured, single-dose pak. It works with your regular detergent to power out tough stains.

• Evaluate clothes before drying: The dry cycle can permanently set-in stains, so scan clothes to make sure the items are com-pletely stain-free before putting them in the dryer. If any spots remain, pre-treat and run it through the wash cycle again.

• Keep your washer and dryer clean: Make sure to periodically clean your appliances to get rid of any built-up residue to keep your clothes as clean as possible. Run an empty wash cycle with hot water and two cups of white vinegar to thoroughly clean the washer. Then, vacuum the lint trap and vent on the dryer to keep it running in tip-top shape.

Don’t let messy stains derail you and your family from quality outdoor fun. Take part in a friendly game of soccer at the bar-beque or enjoy that hot dog at the baseball game, and when you get home, keep these easy laundry tips in mind for bright, clean clothing all year long.

While it’s difficult to eliminate risks entirely, you can make your bathroom safer for the whole family by following a few simple steps: • Choose a textured floor. The splish and splash of taking a bath often leads to slippery surfaces. When choosing flooring for a bathroom, avoid slick surfaces like porcelain and granite, and look for textured choices with better traction. If ceramic is a must, look for certified slip-resistant options. When in doubt, opt for smaller bathroom tiles. The more grout lines, the more resistance your flooring will offer.

• Make it level. You don't need a large, walk-in shower to get one with a low threshold. As trips can be as dangerous as slips, look for a safe shower pan that is level with the floor, making it easy to step inside.

• Get a grip. Installing grab bars in the shower and next to the tub is a good idea for everyone, but it's especially important for those looking to stay in their home as they age. Some products, such as the new Decor Assist accessories and Decorative ADA-compliant Grab Bars from Delta, exceed ADA load requirements and come in a variety of designs and finishes to coordinate with any aesthetic.

• Keep kids in mind. Locks for every style of cabinet or drawer are readily available at local hardware stores. If you have small children (or if they visit), remember to lock away medications,

small electrical appliances and cleaning supplies. Above all, never leave children unattended in the bath or shower.

• Don't get burned. Water heater thermostats can be preset up to 140 degrees, a temperature that can easily burn sensitive skin. Reduce the risk of burns by setting your water heater to 120 degrees. For added peace of mind, install a shower sys-tem that provides a digital temperature read out. Some shower heads and hand showers, such as the new options from Delta Faucet with Temp2O Technology, indicate the temperature of the water via an LED color indicator, as well as a digital numerical readout, and can be installed within minutes.

No matter what age or stage of life, mishaps can happen to anyone and making a few simple adjustments could make all of the difference for your family’s safety in the bathroom.

Laundry Room Transformations

When decorating a home, there are endless possi-bilities to make each room a chic oasis. The laundry room can be upgraded to exude personality and design flair so it becomes a more enjoyable place to spend time in.

From the color palette or patterns on the walls to the floors under foot and everything in between, decorating your laundry room with things that in-spire productivity and tranquility can transform your tired, dull space into a room that feels luxurious, welcoming and relaxing.

Tips to Add Lux to Your Laundry RoomTo help get you started on the road to re-design, Electrolux has teamed up with Design Expert Ca-mille Styles, founder of the popular lifestyle blog www.CamilleStyles.com, to offer these words of advice:

• Begin your design overhaul with beautiful, stylish appliances – like the sleek, high performance Front Load washer and dryer set from Electrolux. These eye-catching machines marry a sleek form with high-performance function, including the fastest combined wash and dry time out there, with a 15 minute wash time and 14 minute dry time.

• Designate specific areas of the space for differ-ent tasks like folding laundry, ironing and polishing shoes. Keep all the necessary supplies for each task nearby so everything is easily accessible when needed.

• Transform laundry room supplies into decorative objects by storing them in refillable clear contain-ers. Use labels to identify what is in each.

• Space that is uncluttered is always more invit-ing, leading to enhanced productivity and a sense of calm. Make use of cabinets, woven baskets and lidded containers to keep items like serving pieces, craft supplies, gift wrap and vases well out of sight.

• If space permits, installing a refrigerator in the laundry room is incredibly useful. When entertain-ing, a well-stocked second refrigerator will allow you to turn your laundry room into a party prep and staging area. It’s a great place to store larger items and to keep beverages and desserts at the perfect temperature, ready to serve at any moment.

Blending simple design tips with functional storage ideas and high performance appliances will find you well on your way to creating an inviting space you are happy to spend time in.

I create beautiful fashion as art, by using innovative materials and techniques to compose a garment, as if I’m creating a work of art. Unexpected materials such as hand crafted hemp material from the Hmong mountain tribes as well as creating a new material by hand weaving existing cloth in composing a new texture, color and pattern. Additionally, I incorporate techniques such as hand painted designs in dresses and suits which transform them into a one of a kind wearable painting.

My goal is that the wearer feels as if they are slipping into a sculpture or painting when putting on one of my pieces. Comfort, style and innovation through materials and techniques, is my approach to bring-ing joy and pride in owning and wearing one of my garments.

Johny Dar was born in Cincinatti, Ohio on 17th April, 1978. Grow-ing up, he nurtured dreams of becoming a filmmaker, convinced from an early age that he had a vision to share. Discovering his talent for design, he moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to study fash-ion. Dar launched his first fashion label ‘Johny Wonder’ in 1998 and has been producing timeless collections since then.

Dar quickly captivated the fashion scene with his avant-garde col-lections, which were stocked in top retailers, and shown along-side established designers, by the time he graduated. He dressed Pink, Shakira, Nelly Furtado, and Brooke Burke among others, and drew celebrities in-cluding Naomi Campbell, Puff Daddy, Bill Mayor and Pamela Anderson to his shows. But Dar turned his back upon his budding fashion career in 2002, leaving LA to seek a grander experi-ence of life travelling the world.

For five years Dar trav-elled new lands, study-ing different cultures and traditions, seeking to break away from the known and nurture his talent in new ways. He immersed himself in many philosophies and ideologies, seeking to discover a common symbolism that could unite them, and merge their similarities and differences into a harmonious expression. His quest to find a new perspective and original way of weaving a story, led him to discover his unique artistic style, and to meet his wife, Anna Dar, with whom he co-created DAR in 2009.

Dar considers his work to be the fruit of his exploration and culmi-nation of his experience. His art pioneers a new form of expres-sion in which objects are drawn from a 360 degree perspective, and light and shadow are balanced from every angle. Drawing boundless inspiration from his extensive experience of different

cultures, Dar weaves his unprecedented artwork into unique cre-ations, translating his passion for originality into every aspect of his work. Today, he applies his art to a broad range of mediums, including art, fashion and multimedia.

Dar's work has been featured in publications ranging from Fault, Hunger and Kaltblut to Aesthetica, Flare and Vogue. His limited edition calendar for 2014 ‘Tuuli by Dar’ comprises of unique im-ages featuring Tuuli Shipster, painted by Dar and photographed by Rankin.

Dar’s recent work includes being invited to the set of Lady Gaga’s recent music video ‘GUY’ as her body painter, and collaborating to produce exclusive editorials for a range of international publica-tions.

Dar launched the first volume of DAR the BOOK in 2012 - the first of six, separate volumes featuring artistic interpretations of the feminine. Subsequent volumes are being published annually. Dar will be launching DAR the BOOK 3 later this year alongside DAR Illuminated – a groundbreaking multimedia experience bringing art to life and life to art though a spectacular simbiosis of light, music and art.

Business Guru Offers Entrepreneurs Guide to Success While Staying Fit and Healthy Success Begins at Home author Lynn D. Ahbonbon leading grassroots movement to promote abundant, healthy living

Some of the world's most successful entrepreneurs devote them-selves so fully to business success that they develop unhealthy eating habits. Tech titan Steve Jobs obsessively ate single foods for weeks at a time, believing he would become healthier as a result.

While most entrepreneurs are not eating only apples and carrots, as Jobs did, author Lynn Ahbonbon suggests that they too may unwittingly be eating diets that are undermining their health.

"The life of a business owner is fast-paced and stressful," said Ahbonbon, a University of Southern California MBA and business coach. As a result, Ahbonbon claims entrepreneurs end up eating the foods that are fastest and most convenient.

"We eat highly processed foods loaded with trans fats, salt and sugar, microwaved in plastic dishes that leach toxins when heated, and then we wonder why we feel tired and our immune systems are so weak," said Ahbonbon.

Ahbonbon's wake-up call came when she was a strategic planning administrator at an automaker.

"I was stressed, fatigued, and eating microwavable dinners four nights a week," said Ahbonbon. "Even though I was physically fit and worked out regularly, I kept getting bloated, having allergies and feeling exhausted."

When three of her relatives in their 30s came down with cancer in quick succession, Ahbonbon decided to devote herself to studying the keys to abundant, healthy living.

The result is her newest book, Success Begins at Home, a guide that combines her twin passions: healthy living and helping en-trepreneurs create abundance. The book includes concise advice, checklists, and do's and don'ts drawn from the author's many years teaching entrepreneurship to business owners. First-time entrepreneurs, as well as old hands will benefit from this book, a well-researched guide which leaves very little room for failure.

"I wrote the book because I want to help business owners to achieve their financial goals and to be healthy enough to enjoy the success they've earned," said Ahbonbon.

The book includes guidance about good and bad fats, reading food labels, which foods to buy organic, and which types of fish to avoid because of mercury content. As well as 22 delicious and healthy international recipes with nutritional and cultural notes. For those who prefer the book without the entrepreneurship sec-tion, Ahbonbon offers two alternatives: Food Made at Home and Worldly Home Cooking.

With families squeezing in getaways to enjoy the last few weeks of summer vacation, and kids heading back to school immediately thereafter, the next couple of months will see your house sitting empty and potentially vulnerable to break-ins. While we may dutifully lock our doors and windows when we go out or go to bed, too many people think burglaries and home invasions are something that only happens to other people. That is, until it happens to us. “A lot of people just think that their home won’t be targeted by a burglar and they don’t take enough safety precautions to protect their homes,” says Gallen Tsui of SkyLink. “However, burglars are always looking for easy targets. The fact is that with just a few simple items and some knowledge, you can make your home safer and less likely of being a victim of a burglary.” Skylink, makers of the Skylink Alarm System and Internet Home-Control System, recommend the following tips to help make your home more secure. Simple but effective:• Plant thorny bushes and plants in front of main floor windows.• Ensure your house numbers are visible and illuminated at night.• Avoid discussing any vacation plans on social media networks.• Turn on your vacation lock function on your garage door opener, if available.• If you were looking to get into your house how would you do it? Think like a burglar and fix any potential weak points.Get an alarm system:• Put stickers from your alarm company in windows and doors to show potential burglars that your home has an active alarm system.

• Many alarm systems have a voice dialer that can be pre-programmed to call your cell phone when a sensor triggers the alarm. Some alarm systems, like Skylink’s, can call up to nine pre-programmed phone numbers.• Install a siren on the outside of your house.Automate your home with a Wireless Home Control System:• Buy light timers or consider investing in the Skylink Internet HomeControl System to turn your lights on/off remotely from your smartphone, tablet or computer.• Or, set light timers in various rooms with the HomeControl Sys-tem App, making sure they are programmed to turn on and off at times that match your usual pattern of room light usage.• Use the Skylink HomeControl System App on your smartphone, tablet or computer to monitor cameras in your home.• Install motion detector lighting around your house to deter pos-sible burglars.

“The main point of protecting your house with these tips is to make an attempted break in too much of a risk for the burglar. If you make it hard for them to get in, and have an active alarm system, they will be more likely to just move on to an easier target,” says Tsui. Skylink makes the Skylink Alarm System, a home alarm solution that you can set up by yourself in less than an hour to confidently secure your home from potential intruders.

EatLike anAthlete

It is common to pair an exercise routine with a plan to cut calories and improve eating habits. While this good old fashioned approach to getting in shape is a smart and healthy one, it’s important that your new diet provides adequate nutrition to fuel your exercise.

Food is your body’s energy source, and giving yourself a boost of energy before your workout is a sound strat-egy for powering your workout. Afterward, you will have depleted a good portion of your energy reserves, so it’s important to refuel post-workout, as well.

While your doctor or a nutritionist can help you determine your body’s exact needs based on your physical activity level, age and body type, you can get started keeping these tips in mind:

• Create an eating plan that incorporates carbohydrates and protein, as well as fat in moderation. Carbohydrates are what the body converts into glucose, which in turn, muscles use for energy. Protein slows the absorption of carbs, prolonging your body’s access to the energy they provide. Your body needs moderate amounts of fat, too, which can be found in a wide range of low-fat foods such as milk and lean meats. Aim to incorporate each of these food categories into every meal.

• Timing when you eat will affect how much energy you have to exercise. A small snack before you get started may give you the power you need for a successful work-out.

• Before beginning a workout, start with a warm-up. Rath-er than static stretches (holding a stretch for a period of time), which can actually have an adverse effect on your muscles, incorporate a dynamic stretching routine with more movement to get blood flowing, increase muscle temperature and kick-start your nervous system.

• While working out, and throughout the day, stay hydrat-ed. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day, and more if your workouts are strenuous or lengthy. Also avoid caf-feine, which may give you a short-term boost but actually dehydrates your body.

• Within one hour of finishing your workout, refuel your muscles with a dairy-based protein beverage. Milk con-tains high-quality protein and essential amino acids that can be particularly beneficial in building and maintain-ing muscle mass when combined with exercise. Several recent studies suggest low-fat milk after exercise can help increase lean muscle.

“Milk is an excellent source of natural protein,” said Blake Atkinson, director of brand management for Shamrock Farms. “For people looking to build and tone lean muscle, a smart addition to their post-workout nutrition is a bever-age that contains calcium, vitamin D and potassium, all of which are essential nutrients naturally found in milk.”

One example is the new Rockin’ Refuel Lean Recovery, a protein beverage made with 100 percent real milk has the recommended 2:1 carb to protein ratio for muscle recov-ery. The beverage offers 17 grams of high quality protein with no sugar added.

Just as you need to give your car gas to make it go, your body needs fuel to perform its best, especially when you’re starting a new fitness program. Proper nutrition will give you the energy you need to create new healthy, ac-tive habits to last all year long.
