President’s Message
Dear Nebraska ASHRAE Members,
I was glad to see so many of you at
this year’s AHR Expo in Orlando,
FL!! 60,000 of us from around the
world converged on the Orange
County Convention Center despite
the blizzard of the century in the
Northeast (what us Midwesterners
call ‘winter’) and some surprisingly
cold temperatures in Orlando caus-
ing the purchases of Universal Stu-
dios sweatshirt sales to skyrocket.
The meeting and expo continues to
be an incredible event for profes-
sionals to network, explore new
products, obtain some valuable
PDHs, and attend some once in a
lifetime parties. I even got to rub
elbows with an HGTV Celebrity Ni-
cole Curtis of Rehab Addict! I hope
you are already considering the next
winter meeting and AHR expo in
Las Vegas!
And if you missed out or haven’t
had enough, stay tuned for this
year’s Nebraska Architectural
and Engineering Conference
(NAEC) that will be held in
conjunction with the ASHRAE
2016 Central Regional Confer-
ence (2016 CRC) at the down-
town Hilton on Friday, Aug 5th. We
are currently accepting submissions
for speakers, vendors and support.

ATLANTA – After the success
and popularity of the first model-
ing challenge, the ASHRAE
LowDown Showdown will be a
part of the ASHRAE and
IBPSA-USA SimBuild 2016
Conference, Aug. 10-12, in
Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Showdown is a modeling
challenge designed to showcase
the work of several teams com-
peting to model a net zero or be-
low building. The competition
gives conference attendees the
opportunity to work with vendors
and developers to showcase
their abilities using the vendor’s
simulation tools, innovative work-
flows and creative problem solv-
ing to model a high performance
building.
The Showdown provides a fun
way of encouraging participation,
demonstrating tool usage in
building modeling and for partici-
pants to present their models to
their peers and colleagues.
How to Join the ASHRAE
LowDown Showdown
Each team will be comprised of
volunteers who will sign up to
play a role on each team, such
as:
Engineers
Architects
Designers
Energy modelers
The teams will be given a
“baseline building” and then
each team will have several
months to work together to cre-
ate their proposed building.
At the conference, on the day of
the Showdown, each team will
present their results. Teams will
be scored on a number of crite-
ria.
The deadline to sign up to par-
ticipate is Monday, Feb. 15.

GRASSROOTS GOVERNMENT ADVOCACY COMMITTEE
The US Senate is poised to consider the Energy Policy Modernization Act (S.2012) be-ginning next Tuesday (1/26). The bill will be debated under an open amendment process that will likely several days – and according to some Senate staff – multiple weeks to com-plete. The details of amend-ments that may be offered are not yet available.
ASHRAE supports the building
energy codes provisions of
S.2012, as well as the reauthor-
ization of the State Energy Pro-
gram and Weatherization Assis-
tance Program. The Society
recommends adding language
from H.R.8 that would support
the consensus process for de-
veloping energy conservation
standards for residential non-
weatherized gas furnaces and
mobile home gas furnaces.
ASHRAE also suggests that
Senators add language sup-
porting the Sensible Accounting
to Value Energy (SAVE) Act,
which would encourage energy
efficiency to be considered dur-
ing mortgage underwriting.

NE ASHRAE Chapter President Tyler Glesne tes-
tified this last Thursday at the State Legislature in
front of the Natural Resources Committee in rela-
tion to Legislative Bill 881. LB 881 is an act relat-
ing to energy financing contracts to amend sec-
tions of the existing legislations. The bill seeks to
clarify and add more specifications to energy per-
formance contracts to state government entities.
Tyler provided the natural resources committee;
which is comprised of 8 state senators - Sen. Ken
Schilz (Chairperson), Sen. Curt Friesen, Sen. Dan
Hughes, Sen. Jerry Johnson, Sen. Rick Kolowski,
Sen. Brett Lindstrom, Sen. John McCollister, and
Sen. David Schnoor; with proposed modifications
to the bill to clarify statements and add require-
ments for energy service providers to be accredit-
ed by NAESCO and have a NE based office.
