At Johnson Memorial Health, maternity care is a family affair

When you need to make an

important decision like

where to have your baby,

who would you ask for advice? Most

people ask friends and family members

where they chose to have their babies.

Of course you will talk to your

doctor about this important decision.

But what if you had a chance to ask

a maternity nurse where she would

choose to deliver her own baby?

Johnson Memorial Hospital Maternity

Care Center nurses overwhelmingly

choose to deliver their babies

surrounded by their co-workers and

friends. In a little over two years, eight

of our nurses have delivered 11 babies

right here at Johnson Memorial.

So, what do our nurses have to say

about why they delivered at Johnson

Memorial? We’ll let them tell you.

Alena Robb

I have delivered four of my children

here and couldn’t imagine going

anywhere else! I delivered here before

I even started working here. I love Dr.

Norris. He is an amazing doctor and

the nurses on this floor are top notch.

I love getting to work with my friends.

The nurses and doctors I work with are

wonderful! We have fun working with

each other and work well together.

When you think

Johnson Memorial Health, think

QUALITY. SERVICE. VALUE. Every patient. Every time.

“Big hospitals lose that personal touch, but at Johnson Memorial it’s always there - from the housekeeping staff to the doctors. I’m in customer service at Bradley Chevrolet and I know how important that is.”

John BurbrinkLife-long Franklin Resident

Finance Manager at Bradley Chevrolet

A trip to Johnson Memorial’s Immediate Care Center ended with an emergency appendectomy for John. During this unexpected illness John tells about his primary care provider, David Dunkle, M.D. and surgeon David Wippermann, M.D., “They had my back, on a very personal and caring level. Dr. Wippermann is a fun, normal guy who put me and my family at ease right away—a terrific bedside manner.” Of JMH he says, “They make you feel like a big fish in a little pond.”

Service

Johnson Memorial welcomes new Chief Financial Officer

Tim Balasia joined the JMH team in 2015 as Chief Financial Officer.

Prior to his role at JMH, Tim was the Corporate Controller for

Methodist Hospitals, a hospital system in Northwest Indiana with

campuses in Merrillville and Gary, where he was instrumental in

automating financial reporting and streamlining the budget process,

as well as implementing improvements in operational cost reductions.

Tim received both his undergraduate finance degree and MBA from

Purdue University Calumet. Tim is a member of the Healthcare

Financial Management Association.

Tim and his wife Jennifer hail from Munster, Indiana, and have three

children.

Betty Blakely and Jesse Shively, both of Franklin, were recently honored as recipients of the 2015 Golden Hoosier Award.

The award honors outstanding senior citizens for their lifetime of service and commitment to their communi-ties. The award is considered one of the highest honors given by the State of Indiana to senior citizens.

“It is my honor to recognize this group of outstanding Senior Hoosiers who are impacting their communities each day,” said Lt. Governor Ell-spermann. “They represent the true Hoosier spirit of lifelong service and dedication to making a difference in the lives of many people.”

Given annually, criteria for the Golden Hoosier Awards include being a current Indiana resident, aged 65 or older and a volunteer in the commu-nity for at least the past three years.

Betty Blakely has served as Johnson Memorial Hospital Guild President, Vice-President and Treasurer and begins her second decade as a John-son Memorial Hospital Foundation Ambassador. Ms. Blakely volunteers in the hospital’s gift shop, medical records and information desk. She was also the past treasurer and vice president for the South East area IHAA (Indiana Hospital Auxiliary As-sociation), volunteer for the library’s biannual book fairs, and serves as concierge at Franklin United Method-ist Community.

“Betty is an inspiration and true example of living to serve others,” says Gina Huff, Volunteer Coordina-tor at Johnson Memorial. “She has shown that getting older need not make a person less productive or self-focused. She truly lives to make a difference in the lives of many. She is considered the face of the volunteers of this hospital.”

Jesse E. Shively, PhD, worked for 30 years in the pharmaceutical field and has brought those skills to Johnson Memorial as a volunteer and a past volun-teer for the St. Thomas Clinic. His work at the clinic gleaned well over $1 million in free medications for those who qualified. He is an outstanding advocate and

asset for Johnson Memorial’s Cancer Care Center where he is responsible for scanning patient charts into the hospital’s electronic medical records program. This is a job that requires extensive organization and attention to detail.

“Jesse has become a very dear member of the Cancer Center,” says Gretchen Diallo, RN. “We all look to him with respect for the work he does and appreciate the time he gives to help with patient charting.”

Leslie Howell I knew I would be cared for like family. Not only me, but also my baby. I also knew my care would be top notch! I couldn’t imagine delivering anywhere else.

I have been employed at JMH for 18 years. I love coming to work knowing that I have amazing coworkers! Not only co-workers but, family!

-

Sarah Caldwell I have worked at JMH for the past 14 years. I wouldn’t think about delivering anywhere else. It is sort of a family tradi-tion. My grandmother Katie Robards was a nurse here for 40+ years and my mother Karen Robards is still a nurse, work-ing here since the 70s. I was born at JMH 33 years ago and since then JMH has been the delivering hospital for multiple family members. If my grandmother was still alive, 10 of her 13 great-grand children have been delivered here and she would have been so thrilled. I love the family centered care we give in the maternity center, including grandparents, par-ents, siblings and other children in the patient’s care.

I love working at JMH because I feel that working in a small hospital gives me more opportunities to meet and get to know the other staff. I like working with a smaller group of people, it feels more like a family than just co-workers. Again, it is a family tradition that has just been passed on. I didn’t plan to work here just because my mother and grandmother were here but once I was here I couldn’t see myself working anywhere else.

“The staff at Johnson Memorial,

from the Emergency Department to

the Women’s Health Specialists and

Maternity Care Center are

knowledgeable, professional, and

personable,” stated Ben O’Neal, PhD

Professor of Biology at Franklin Col-

lege.

Over the last four years, we’ve had

medical needs that ranged from

mundane to very intense. In all of

these moments, the staff was

attentive, timely and skilled. The staff

at Johnson Memorial understands

and exercises one of the most critical

aspects of quality medical care; they

understand that effective diagnosis,

treatment, and healing require a

genuine connection with the patient

-They listen - They treat their

patients like they would want their

own families treated if they were in

need of care.

Throughout the process of preparing

for and delivering our three little girls,

we received top notch care. Johnson

Memorial offered meaningful educa-

tional opportunities to prepare for our

birth. During our stay at the hospital,

the nurses,

doctors,

technicians

Personal care brings family back

and facilities staff were always patient-

focused. To this day, we love to visit

the staff members that cared for us

during our stay. When you or a loved

one is well cared for during a critical

moment in your life, a bond is forged

that you never forget.

Many of life’s most significant mo-

ments happen in hospitals. We are

so grateful to have a hospital in our

community that recognizes the sig-

nificance of its work and service and

carries out its mission with diligence,

integrity, and warmth.
