leTTer from The pUblisherAttending community Christmas functions is a special thrill this time of year for the Floyd family. There’s not much we enjoy more than experiencing the generosity of friends and neighbors during the giving season as we share local traditions.

One of these in Plant City is the annual Lights of Love tree lighting in McCall Park. The slightly cooler weather and a wonderful new but old-fashioned candy store added to this year’s downtown adventure. And of course, the traditional photos with Santa and Mrs. Clause mark the milestones of our boys’ physical growth. (It also helps with the Christmas wish lists).

This event has become the one that makes you realize, “Christmas is here at last.” The lights on the tree are reminders of the many generous families and businesses who believe that the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation is worthy of support. Dona-tions benefit the hospital’s numerous outreaches to children and families who have difficulty affording medical care. With every light’s twinkle, we’re reminded of the joy of giving.

Generosity abounds in this town and this month Plant City folks shared their children with us on Facebook in our first “Cutest Kids Contest.” You voted and we photographed those twinkling eyes and generous smiles.

The magazine is packed this month with great stories that we hope will remind you why you love living in this town.

As we close out 2011 and look forward into 2012, we sincerely hope that reading Focus has become one of your monthly traditions.

Plant City businessman Earl Burkett was named as the new President of the Kiwanis Club of Plant City on October 5. Burkett moved to Florida in 2006 to take on the responsibilities of agency president for Strong Tower Insurance, Inc. which he now owns. A former member of the Kiwanis Club of Valdosta, Georgia for three years and Columbus, Georgia for three-and-a-half years, Burkett joined the Plant City chapter in 2009. “The Kiwanis Club of Plant City was able to impact the lives of 7,946 children last year alone,” he commented. “I’m looking forward to having even more opportunities this year.” Burkett resides in Lakeland with his wife of 30 years, Carolyn, and their children, Caitlin and Jacob.

Basketball ChampionsThe Tomlin Middle School’s boys and girls teams, each were crowned Hillsborough County Middle School Basketball Champions On October 25. The boys defeated Adams 47 - 31 and the girls crushed Roland Park 32-14. This is the second championship for Tomlin’s girls. Last year they claimed the county championship in the tournament’s inaugural year. Last year, Tomlin’s boys were the runners-up.

The Civinettes of Plant City High School volunteered for Unity in the Community and assembled 225 food baskets for needy families in Plant City. Food was donated by Sweetbay and Felton’s. The gift bags included bread, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, stuffing mix, cranberries, mashed potatoes, and a turkey. The plentiful gift baskets provided enough food to feed a family a traditional Thanksgiving meal. What is the primary area of your practice? I practice adult and pediatric dermatology. This includes surgical dermatology, pathology of the skin and cosmetic dermatology.

How are you able to help people? The main priority is prevention, so by visiting your dermatologist you can prevent the progression of pre-cancers and cancers into more serious disease. With this said, there are many treatable skin conditions that can be easily treated with regular dermatology visits.

What is one of the most memorable cases you have seen and how were able to treat it? All my cases are special and important, but the ones that stand

out are the cancers that I have diagnosed and saved lives. However, as an acne sufferer in my youth, I am always very happy when someone comes in smiling because their acne has cleared up.

What makes your practice different than other dermatology practices? My practice is different in that I see 100% of my patients. I believe that if you are paying a health insurance premium to see a specialist then you should see a specialist. At most other practices, you often see the nurse practitioner and not the actual dermatologist. There is a reason we have more education; it’s so we can recognize things others many not know to look for or may not be familiar with.

Key Club students distributed programs and the PCHS 2012 Calendar Girls sold their calendars. Judy Martin, SFBHF Executive Director, works tirelessly to recruit sponsors and encourage area families to donate for a light or many on the tree. The event’s program always those who, according to Martin, help “kick off the holiday season” and light up the community tree with

amber, green, blue, and red bulbs. This year Martin was recognized for her long term commitment to Lights of Love and the Foundation.

The 2011 event Major sponsors were Publix Super Markets Charities and the Thompson-Hartford Foundation, Inc. Tree sponsors were Radiology and Imaging Specialists and the City of Plant City. Top Star sponsors included Advanced Hospitalists, Rooms to Go Children’s Fund, John and Sally Verner, and Ruby Jean Redman. The program also listed the generous Patron and Supporting sponsors.

The downtown gathering provided the perfect setting for photos with Santa and

many years. Fred said, “Tammy and I have the greatest respect for those who had the vision and determination to build Plant City’s South Florida Baptist Hospital. It has provided not only medical services critical for our citizens, but has elevated the moral, cultural and economic standing of the community. The efforts of Judy Martin, the SFBH Foundation Board, and its financial supporters reflect our community’s continued commitment to the value of life.”

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week with a different theme and activities for each day from October 24 - 28: “Shade out Drugs”, “Stomp Out Drugs”, “Turn Your Back on Drugs”, “Band Together Against Drugs” and “Take a Stand for a Drug-Free Land.”

On hand to help Knights Elementary celebrate “Red Ribbon Week” were Plant City High School cheerleaders and percussionists. In addition, law enforcement officers as well as Knights parents, Sergeant Alfred Van Duyne (Plant City Police Department) and Deputy Craig Lariz (Hillsborough County Sherriff ’s Office) educated and encouraged students to live drug free. Cork Volunteer Firefighters as well as DACCO representatives spoke with the students about drug use and how it affects the lungs and body. In fact, DACCO showed the students the difference between a healthy lung and how it breathes and a blackened lung from smoking and drug use.

She adds, “Some of the letters were truly moving.”

The Red Ribbon Week coordinator, Knights Elementary counselor, Lisa Carlsen felt the week was a great success. The students learned very valuable lessons through hands on fun activities and educational opportunities. Carlsen said, “I have seen the impact and damage drugs make on the body and mind and on children’s lives when parents make the wrong choices.”

Teachers and staff now hope that the overall result of the week’s focus is that students learn the importance of making healthy choices in the present and the future.

Someone asked recently, “What do you believe about the Bible?” It’s a fair question. After all, here’s this pastor guy who’s been writing in the “Focus” about his dream to plant a new church right here in Plant City. May as well ask him what he believes.

Simply speaking, I believe about the Bible what the Bible says about itself: Scripture is God-breathed—inspired by the living and unchanging God—and because its origin is divine, its truths are divine. The Bible is God’s Word. It’s alive, it’s powerful, and it’s authoritative.

I also believe we don’t have to “prove” the Bible, but think that our calling as believers is to understand and live out the message of the Bible with the help of the Holy Spirit. I believe, as the great Baptist theologian Herschel Hobbs once wrote, the Bible “is the record of God’s revelation of Himself to man.” And since that’s so, the very best thing about the Bible is that it points us to the person and work of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. He is the ultimate subject and object of our worship, not the Bible, for the starting place of faith is the person and work of Jesus Christ.

One other thing: The Bible tells the miraculous stories of God’s mighty saving acts and deeds throughout history. God’s story is big—really big—and I believe that we don’t so much join a church, or invite God into our small slice of life, and think that’s it. We must come together and enter into “His” story. The Bible is one of the most important ways we can learn about God’s big story.

Now, I’ve shared what I believe about the Bible; I’d like to hear from you. As always, let’s keep the conversation going.

the Christmas season officially began in Plant City on December 2nd with the Plant City Christmas Parade and

the ride through town by Santa Claus himself. Thousands of children and adults lined the downtown streets as they eagerly waited for the parade to begin. Over 80 units made their way down the parade route to the cheers and applause of many spectators.

Parade Co-Chair, Davy Miles, said this year’s parade showcased “unique entries such as the monster truck/school bus, the King of Bass, Smokey the Bear, and Samoyed Fancies (dogs pulling sleigh).” Parade participants also included Plant City Police Officers, Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Department, marching bands from local schools (Durant High School, Marshall Middle School, Plant City High School and Tomlin Middle School), Strawberry Festival Queen Victoria Watkins and her court (1st Maid Victoria Garren, Taelor Highland, Kori Lane and Summer Norris), Sweetbay Supermarket and many more.

Elected officials State Representative Rich Glorioso, Mayor Dan Raulerson, City Commissioners Mike Sparkman, Bill Dodson and Mary Thomas Mathis waved to and shook hands with spectators. Also on hand were Hillsborough County Commissioner’s Ken Hagan and Al Higginbotham to greet the crowd.

The Plant City Christmas Parade Committee members include Co-chairs Davy Miles and Fran Neilsen, Sue Burt, Henry Falcon (Sweetbay Supermarket), Sharon Moody, Marlene Ward, Stewart Angel and countless others who donate their time to this community celebrated annual event. According to Miles, “The spectators who lined the streets created one of the parade’s largest crowds ever. Also, a special thank you is due the Plant City Noon Rotary Club, law enforcement, Plant City Fire Department and the City of Plant City for making the event possible.”

Cracker Country’s own Stephanie Sumner (a.k.a. Prunella Laidlow) greeted visitoris with information about how people survived without the modern conveniences of today. Seated next to her was Marly Collier, her friend who demonstrated the art of crochet.

Dressed in overalls and a sweat stained work hat, Dennis Wrobel encouraged visitors to sign up for Cracker Country information. Uncle Bill Vickers nodded a friendly hello (that is, when he wasn’t nodding off ). “Helping people learn about how it was in the past is what we try to do“, said Wrobel, a Cracker Country docent (museum teacher).

Pioneer Days wouldn’t be complete without some great food and this year’s event was no exception. The aroma of good old Southern barbeque and other tantalizing foods tempted visitors to enjoy the palate pleasing tastes that satisfied their hunger.

Proceeds from Pioneer Heritage Day help to preserve the precious past of Plant City. The funding helps maintain the memories and comforting knowledge that our children will learn what it took to build and keep our lovely little farming town still going after all these decades.

Lehtola has traced his hobby tradition back to possibly 12 generations, beginning possibly in the Seagrove, North Carolina area with the coal potters that date back to at least the 1800s. Some of the original families’ descendants are still running pottery factories in that area. Lehtola also said of his craft, “I just do it for fun and enjoyment.“

Linda Fuller of Lynda’s Creations had a display glistening and overflowing with Christmas tree ornaments, floral arrangements and an assortment of other creative Christmas designs for decorating home or office. Fuller, who has been in business for about 15 years, appreciates the ability to use her “creative genes” when she’s making décor items.

As children and parents filled the face painting room and formed a line out the door and into the hallway, it was evident that organizers had hit on a winning idea with the young and young at heart. Board member Cheryl Worsham and artist Peggy Paramore prepared and painted eagles, race cars, butterflies, pirates and exotic designs on the children’s pudgy cheeked and inquisitive faces while parents, grandparents and friends had just as much fun watching and visiting one another.

Worsham explained, “The Arts Council of Plant City is a proud sponsor of this event. This year we chose to have a face painting booth; we felt that it was the perfect vehicle to promote the Arts to young children.”

Mr. Grooms explained with necessary concern, “It’s so important to know and to remember the past.”

Mildred Humphrey, one of several crafters who demonstrated their art, showed how children were taught to cross-stitch on gingham fabric. Humphrey also had homemade aprons, gift bags and pillows that she fashions for everyday use. When asked why she sews and makes her homespun apparel, Humphrey said, “It’s just fun and I enjoy it.”

Even if barbeque wasn’t your thing, there was still plenty to do and see at Pig Jam. Other food booths served pastries, fried food, and Italian ice while a moon-bounce, rock climbing wall, and face painting were also available for people to enjoy. Bands played music next to seating, so guests had the option to relax as they tasted the variety of great food that Pig Jam had to offer.

Pete’s Pork Pit BBQ was on the other side of the spectrum as a seven-year veteran. Pete Cross, head cook of Pete’s, brought his whole family out to help this year. With wife, daughter, son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons in tow, the crew cooked chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket. Pete’s has won and placed in many other competitions and had a few of those trophies with them. With all the guests walking through the booths and the crowd in the kitchen, a few trophies were broken in the jumble.

from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Plant City hosted its 9th annual Pig Jam BBQ Contest at the Randy Larson Softball Four-Plex. More than 70 teams of amateur and professional barbeque cooks from throughout Florida and the nation brought the heat to compete for trophies, $16,00 and the title of Pig Jam Champion.

Pig Jam is an annual state competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Contestants compete in one of three categories (professional, amateur, and children) while cooking ribs, chicken, pork, and/or brisket. Many contestants went on to sell their product to the crowd of people who came to enjoy the event. With groups named things like Gone Hog Wild, Rub Me Tender, and Government Pork, it was easy to tell that it wasn’t just the dining guests who were having fun.

emPty boWlshundreds of empty bowls were just

waiting to be filled, much like empty cupboards await food, during the

inaugural fundraising event for the United Food Bank and Services of Plant City (UFB) on November 12, 2011 at McCall Park’s train depot.

Empty Bowls is a nationally known event to help the hungry. Hundreds gathered in Plant City to raise $5,222 through t-shirt sales, food tickets, and a silent auction. This money will assist UFB with food purchases necessary for the 50 to 60 clients UFB serves weekly.

Boy Scout Troop 5 opened the event by raising an American flag donated by Congressman Gus Bilirakis that once flew over the Capitol building, as the Plant City Community Choir sang a tribute to each military branch and for the U.S.A. The group also performed a song especially written for Empty Bowls by locals Lenn Stone and Lark Underwood.

Vice-Mayor Bill Dodson on behalf of the City presented a proclamation and encouraged attendees, saying, “People of all ages can work together to help the hungry in the community.”

This truth was evident in the ceramic bowls created by local children and the Art Guild of Plant City.

Jim Chancey, interim director of UFB,

hoped this event builds awareness of the local need. Over the course of the year, thousands of families seek help from the UFB, and those needs are greater during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“Clients are very appreciative of the food we give them,” Chancey shared. “Even if some do not have electricity, we can provide food. We have to be aware of the clients needs as we try to help.”

As Pam Almond works with the applicants, she discovers those needs, while eight to ten volunteers donate their time weekdays to restock shelves, check expirations, and bag groceries.

Community support is critical. Some who donated for this event were All A Bloom Florist, Cole Properties, Flower’s Bakery, Publix Supermarkets, Sweetbay and several more. Bethel Missionary Church, volunteer David Miller, Taste Traditions, and many others provided the different soups.

oPeRAtion ComPAssioneach year Operation Compassion

distributes Thanksgiving baskets to Plant City area families in need.

This year more than 300 families received ingredients for a complete Thanksgiving dinner.

For the first time in Operation Compassion’s 11-year history at Plant City Church of God, the outreach partnered with Feeding America. Additionally, congregation members donated turkeys via Publix gift cards and groceries were provided by the non-profit Feeding America, an organization that helps feed 37 million Americans nationwide.

Operation Compassion is a national Church of God benevolence ministry that receives no federal funding. Throughout the year on the local level, OC and its all volunteer staff shows Christ’s love in practical ways such as food. The team, led by Dolores Stropagel, often also refers clients to sources for clothing and many other services.

Each year in December, Operation Compassion and church volunteers also serve a lovely Christmas dinner for families who have received help. Afterward, Santa distributes to each child a wrapped gift

provided by individuals, businesses, and area organizations. Families are encouraged to sign up in advance so there will be plenty for all.

Families in need can visit the food pantry located on the southwest side of the rear parking lot of Plant City Church of God, 2103 Mud Lake Road on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Stropagel developed her passion for this work through her own experiences in times of great need. She shared, “God has helped me overcome so much. Therefore, I love what I do. These are not just people in need. They have become my friends and family.”

A Scriptural principal from Matthew 25:40 guides the ministry: “…Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Regrettably, this year some families were turned away because overwhelming demand was greater than the supply. To help with always needed and greatly appreciated donations of food and funds, call 813-752-4591. Folks are always encouraged to “BOGO - Buy one and give one.”

Dr. Jeremy Gaffney graduated from Jesuit High School in Tampa and attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business. Jeremy then decided to pursue his Doctor of Optometry Degree and

was accepted by the UAB School of Optometry in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Barry Gaffney also graduated from UAB and established his practice in Plant City 33 years ago. Senator for District 10, has always been willing to address the tough

issues. She spoke candidly on pro-family and gambling issues on Thursday, October 27 at the Community Issues Council meeting held at First Baptist Church in Plant City.

Council president Terry Kemple complimented the Senator, saying, “The Community Issues Council is honored to be able to work with legislators like Senator Ronda Storms. She makes our work to promote Judeo-Christian values in our community a pleasure.” Storms suggested an engaging approach to these issues. “When trying to talk to the secular public about Christian views in politics, we can appeal to the economic burden,” she said.

As Christians, the phrase “pro-family” is understood as the way God would have husbands and wives respect one another. So often the consequences of divorce place not only serious emotional and financial burdens on family members, but also on the nation as a whole.

As divorce numbers increase, so does the need for and cost of welfare,

which includes food stamps and other government funded programs. In many cases child support is awarded, but difficult to enforce. Storms asked, “How is no-fault divorce working for us?”

“Gambling is another critical issue in Florida,” continued Storms.

Casino owners, with diligent and tireless efforts, are working to establish “Destination Resorts” in Florida. The gambling addiction of many could have further negative effects on our communities.

There are ways that each and every American can help. One way is through prayer - for our country and our elected officials. Another is to vote. Storms emphasized that, ”What we are doing is for the love of God and the love of Christ”

The Community Issues Council encourages everyone to take a deeper look at priorities and loyalties involving America and our families and then join their work to keep Christian values in our homes and communities.

“This festival is really a fun event that benefits the community the most,” Christi related enthusiastically. “We are just adding elements to make it better each year.”

Raburn complimented the cooperation and generosity of sponsors, which included Beef O’ Brady’s, in Plant City, Hinton Farms, Lorraine Bennett of Keller Williams Realty, SweetBay Supermarkets and Rhett Rollyson. “These sponsors, along with our volunteers,” she said, “made the race possible.”

In conclusion, she added, “We are very proud of this race and excited that it will now be an annual event.”

Forty-one runners, an abundance of volunteers, a smooth course and cooperative weather combined for a successful day. Participants and competitors raced down Knights Griffin Road to Charo Lane and back.

Corporal Ed Raburn of the Hillsborough County Sheriff‘s Department, who is also Christi’s husband, directed the race. He was excited about the community’s enthusiasm, which he said was evidenced by the fact that “Ten volunteers came out before the sun was up to help setup the course.”

Among the volunteers were Diane Brady, Raburn’s mother, SCHS teacher Jodie Carleton, and patrolmen from Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s

Christina Raburn, Assistant Principal of Strawberry Crest High School and an avid runner, helped establish what is planned to become an annual event. She said, “This 5k is the newest addition to Antioch Days. We had a great first race turn out.”

Pastor Jim Brady, who is also Raburn’s father, said, “The race was a first for the Antioch Days celebration, with a tremendous turnout. Overall, it was an exciting event. We look forward to next year’s race.”

He continued, ““We don’t candy coat anything. The things we sing about are ugly, terrible things, but reality is a terrible ugly place and that needs to be acknowledged and changed, not ignored in hopes it will get better.”

Instead of flak from listeners who find a Christian message, Tyson explained, “Most are blown away when they realize we are a Christian band. We do our best to be relevant, listeners respect that”

Critical response has been positive. In a June 24, 2011 online review, Singer/Songwriter Leah J. wrote, “I’m hooked. After a brilliant live performance I purchased ‘FireFly.’ Best money I’ve spent on music in awhile. It’s filled with musical chops that fans of Dream Theatre, Annabelle or Poor Old Lu will appreciate.”

Bill Shepherd, founder of the SWFLCMN, is also impressed, not only with the band, but with the intent. “PTP belongs in the world, taking their message to lost and frantically searching young people who WILL get the message. They play for those I can never hope to reach”.

The band is preparing to record its second album. Tyson described it as, “technical, hard, and lush,” saying, “Fans of the first album won’t know what hit them.”

Tyson understands and expects questions. He explained, “Our lyrics are cryptic. Those who take music at face value have a hard time understanding the message. Like any good movie, the audience wants to be challenged, to feel like they’ve found the riddle’s answer.”

The young musicians are far from novices. Tyson, 27, spent most of his Plant City childhood behind the soundboard of his father’s country band and playing in local rock groups throughout high school.

His brother-in-law and close friend, Billy Kladakis, 19, who co-wrote the band’s 2010 debut effort says, “I have a feeling our second album is going to make FireFly jealous.”

Riverview native Austin “Pete” Ploch, 21, began traveling as the band’s engineer in early 2010. Now on stage as the band’s electronic musician, he’s thankful for the opportunity to “share my testimony through music and see the audience’s emotions as they relate with and learn from our message.”

For many years guitarist Christian Garnelo, 25, searched for a band that would challenge him musically. “Being in PTP allows me to express my emotions, feelings, desires, and beliefs artistically. We place no boundaries on our creativity, and most importantly, we are like-minded musicians with a message of hope.”

Of his experience, drummer and Lakeland native Noah Stevens, 16, says, “I’ve learned a lot musically and have come to know

an open door to conversation, they ask listeners to look within themselves, using the band’s music as a tool to break down walls.

Passion for different and beautiful music drives the group members who have a heart for the lost and hurting. Founder, Austin Tyson, describes the five-member band as “a faith-based experimental rock band with purpose.”

Tyson writes: “There’s so much pain in the world right now, people feel very helpless and very alone, so rather than preach, we focus on individual scenarios. Our hope is that through our music listeners will understand that others are walking through similar situations, and find hope.”

The band’s name comes from Proverbs 19:17, “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” The verse, also reflected in their song “1917”, is a simple reminder of the group’s desire to remain humble. “We aren’t here for us, and our name expresses that.” Tyson says.

bmX ChAmPion mAtt WilhelmHe was in a bike accident involving a car and used this as an example of what to do while riding a bike along a busy street. The buzz around school was all about his Spiderman trick, where he climbed the side of the building while on his bike.

The one trick everyone couldn’t believe was when Wilhelm jumped over three adult volunteers lying side by side. The terrified volunteers included Suzanne Birchmeier, Melissa Voelker and the school’s principal, Dina Wyatt.

Wyatt was placed in the “danger zone” on the end and began to have second thoughts. Her two children in the audience had worried looks on their faces. Her son Corbin recalled, “I was nervous. I thought he was going to hit her with the bike.” When Wilhelm’s jump cleared all three volunteers, an audible sigh of relief went up from the volunteers and the anxious audience.

Wilhelm’s presentation was one exciting experience the Walden Lake students won’t soon forget.

As a PTA fundraiser incentive, students sold a certain number of items to be able to attend this exciting event. Many watched as Wilhelm performed stunts that seemed impossible to complete.

When he first started performing for schools, Wilhelm thought he would do 10 a year; annually, now he does 300. His performance packs a good message. He took a moment to talk about failure and how it is important not to give up if you don’t succeed the first time. All students listened as he explained that he came in last place in his very first X-Games competition, but he didn’t quit. With practice and perseverance…the rest is history.

He also took the time to tell students the importance of wearing a helmet and showed examples using student volunteers.

Walden Lake Elementary School recently had the honor of hosting the well-known BMX medalist,

Matt Wilhelm at their school to perform a demonstration.

Matt Wilhelm, is a three time X-Games medalist, two time National Champion, winner of Fox television’s “30 Seconds to Fame”, and a semifinalist on “America’s Got Talent.”

Wild hoRse ministRiesa weekend of outdoor activities, food,

and fellowship is being planned for January 21-22, 2012 to benefit Wild

Horse Ministries and Frontline Ministries. Each of these ministries reaches out to people in different ways to help them praise the Lord. An interest in horses and Christ all works together for a fun filled weekend.

Each day begins with a demonstration by the Sheriff ’s posse, followed by a mounted shooting demonstration. Then Paul Daily, known as “The Horse Whisperer”and founder of Wild Horse Ministries, will take the arena. The Wild Horse Ministries motto is “As for me and my horse, we will ride for the Lord.”

Daily trains horses by “gentling” them through words and pats, all in the course of two hours. Daily follows ten steps to help the horse submit to him. Some of these steps include trust, a desire to please,

seeking understanding, and acceptance of truth.

Through each of these steps, Daily points out the similarities between people’s relationship with God and a horse’s relationship with his trainer. As the horse submits to the trainer, people will submit to God.

The untrained horse that Daily will demonstrate with that day is a halter or rope trained horse between the ages of 18 months and 3 years. After this horse is trained, it will be auctioned off.

So come on out on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2012 to the Hillsborough County Fair Grounds and enjoy hearing about forgiveness and trust from a new perspective.

the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center will be hosting the opening of the Smithsonian traveling exhibition Journey

Stories tour in the State of Florida from May 26 through July 7, 2012. As part of our participation in this program we are soliciting journey stories from local residents. Some of them will appear in FOCUS Magazine. Here is the first of the Journey Stories series from our collection.

The journey story of this branch of the Gott family begins with Charles Gott, who we refer to as the Immigrant Ancestor. Charles Gott was born in Brokenbury, England, 12 March 1598. He frequented both the Dorset area and Cambridge, and in 1625 married Gift Palmer at St. Andrew the Great Church in Cambridge. (The librarian at Cambridge University informed me that “Gift” was a biblical reference to the name “Dorothy”.)

After the Protestant Reformation began in the 16th century, England became a literal battlefield for religious domination. Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church and by 1536 had created and established the Church of England, (the Anglican Church), as the one church in England and the King was the head of it. Religious wars followed for many years after.

Two groups felt the Anglican Church was the dominant church but that it was not following the right direction, and each had a different approach to dealing with it. The Separatists, known as Pilgrims, wanted to separate from the Church of England and establish their own church according to the teachings of the Bible. Those that wanted to stay within the Church of England, but reform it from the inside, were known as the Puritans. This group seemed to grow out of a group centered around the town

and university of Cambridge and had ties to the Rev. John White, of Dorset.

The Pilgrims were influential in setting sail, in 1620, for the new world on the ship Mayflower, with Virginia as their goal, Instead, they landed in New England, naming the place Plymouth. The Puritans put together a party to establish a Puritan colony in the new world and sailed on the Abigail out of Weymouth, Dorsetshire, in 1628. The head of this party was John Endicott, a friend of Rev. John White and the man named to become the first Governor of the Bay Colony. With him were a number of citizens including Charles Gott, with his wife and two daughters.

They landed in an area known then as Naumkeag and were greeted by survivors of an earlier settlement. To make peace, the new settlers and the previous settlers agreed to rename the area Salem, meaning Peace. John Endicott became the Governor of the new Bay Colony, and Charles Gott became one of the founders of the first church organized in the new colonies – a Congregational church called the

First Church, in 1629, and Charles Gott became one of the first Deacons. He was a farmer and civic leader.

In 1653 Charles Gott and family moved to Wenham, earlier a part of Salem, which became a separate town in 1643. There he was one of the founders of the first church of Wenham, a Congregational church. He and sons Charles and Daniel were officers of the town and members of the militia, which had diplomatic relations with the surrounding Indians and also protected the town in event of unrest between the Indians and the new settlers. They were farmers and Charles Gott, Sr. also had a tannery.

John Gott, son of Daniel and grandson of Charles, moved in the early 1700s to a new religious community in Connecticut named Hebron. His grandson, John Gott, was involved in the French and Indian War(s) and later moved to Austerlitz, New York, then a hotbed of Indian activity and hostilities between protesting colonists and loyalist colonists, and the British. There, John Gott and his sons John, Jr., and Story, a boy of about 12, joined the Patriots in the Revolutionary War. John, Sr., and John, Jr., were infantry while Story was a drummer boy for the troops. For their service they received land grants in the Austerlitz, New York, area – later known as the Gott Lands.

Story Gott and his wife, Mary “Polly” Gott, had fourteen children and the family lived on the Gott farm. Their son, Harvey Welcome Gott, married Polly Howes and raised their family of eight there and built a large home in the mid-1800s. Their first born, Harvey Cole Gott, was also born on the Gott farm; he married Ella Shepardson about 1874 and they raised their two children there and were active in the community of Spencertown and in St. Peters Church. Their son, John Shepardson Gott journeyed to Connecticut to study electronics and there met May “Mary” Stebbins, from Vermont.

John Shepardson Gott and Mary Stebbins were married in 1903 in Connecticut and moved back to the Gott farm. Railroads were promising enterprises for up and coming young men at that time and John Gott accepted a position with the New York Central Railroad. About 1913 he was transferred to Ashtabula, Ohio, and then to the rail operations out of Erie, Pennsylvania. Here they raised their seven children – Harvey, Charles, Margaret, George, John, Jr., Edwin, and Francis.

Charles Fairbanks Gott was the second son, born in 1905 on the Gott farm in the Spencertown area, Austerlitz Township, New York. He was named after Charles Fairbanks, Vice President for President Theodore Roosevelt, and whose Puritan ancestors settled in America in 1632 and who was a distant cousin. Charles met Marie Ehrheart (later spelled Earhart) at St. Michael’s Church on Erie’s West Side, where he would walk her home from church. Marie’s mother, Madeline

Brown, was from Ohio, and her father, Monte Ehrheart, was born in mid-state Pennsylvania and was an officer with the Erie Chapter of the Knights of Pythias. They trace their roots to England and Ireland.

Charles F. Gott and Marie J. Ehrheart were married at St. Michael’s in July 1929; they had seven children – Douglas, Daniel, Marion, Jerome, James, Virginia, and Gilbert, all raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. He worked for the General Electric Company for over 30 years and was one of founders of the GE’s local credit union in the 1930s.

The family camped out, and traveled to many parks and historic sites in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. The children learned to enjoy traveling. Douglas joined the Navy and served in Key West and later moved to Ohio and then to California. Daniel was in the US Army and later moved to California. Jerry attended the University of Detroit and worked in various states including Washington and settled in California. Jim enlisted in the US Navy and served in Cuba, later worked in Iowa and Wisconsin. Marion and Virginia married and set up residence in Erie. And as a teenager, I toured the country with two friends, sleeping in tents and eating at roadside rest areas.

I joined the Air Force in 1961 and was sent to the Institute of Far Eastern Languages, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. I then served in the Far East ( Japan) and Southeast Asia, flying in the Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, South China Sea area in 1964-65. After returning in 1965 I attended the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., graduating in 1969. Wanting to experience a small town environment, I attended the Graduate School at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1970, and then went on to the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I worked in Pittsburgh, Erie, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, before abandoning the snow and cold and moving to Florida in 1985.

In Florida I enjoyed living on the beach and worked in Madeira Beach, Seminole, St. Pete Beach, and Clearwater, before moving to Plant City to take a position with the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce in 1995. After leaving the Chamber, I later taught at Hillsborough Community College, worked at a tree farm, and helped organize and develop the Plant City Photo Archives, and accepted the position as Executive Director of the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center. I also enjoy the year-round opportunity to sail that Florida offers. Quite a journey – and I have enjoyed the places I have been and the people I have met along the way.

How about that 9th. Annual PIG JAM? The weather was what the Chamber likes to call“Chamber of Commerce weather”. It was simply a beautiful day and the crowd which was estimated at between 15 and 18,000 enjoyed some truly great barbeque.

The event was held at the Randy Larson Four-Plex which is adjacent to the Plant City Stadium. Is is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Over $15,000 in prize money was awarded to the winners in the various categories: Pork, Brisket, Chicken & Ribs. This Annual event attracts amateurs and professionals alike. There was even a kids contest.

A big tip of the hat to Chris Sparkman who chaired this event along with the help of numerous Chamber and community volunteers for putting this event on for our community to enjoy.

As you break out your 2012 calendars, mark the date for the Big 10th. Anniversary Pig Jam. That will take place on Saturday, November 17th. Mark your calendars. Chris promises to make the 2012 event even bigger and better! Is that even possible? You just wait and see. I bet it will be. **********

The Chamber presents the 2011 STRAWBERRY CLASSIC CAR SHOW on Saturday, December 17th. This all takes place in the beautifully Christmas decorated

McCall Park and gets underway at 4 p.m. A special treat will be the Tina & Randy Dallman Christmas Show with performances at 6 and 7 p.m. This event features ‘86 and older cars and trucks including antiques, customs, classic & hotrods. The United Food Bank of Plant City has been especially busy this time of year. With the economic situation the way it is, Jim Chancey, Director, is asking you to remember them this holiday season. The gift of a meal is a small sacrifice that can mean so much to someone in desperate need of food. The Food Bank accepts donations of food and money at their location, 702 East Alsobrook Street, Suite H. Their hours of operation are

Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9 to 1 and Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 to 5:30.

Mr. Chancey asked me to convey is thanks to Publix Supermarkets, CF Industries, Stingray Chevrolet, Gordon Foods, Hillsborough County Area 6 schools, Daybreak Rotary and all the other volunteers who helped with food and in-kind donations which were passed out just prior to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. In the 3 days prior to Thanksgiving, the Food Bank gave out over 750 bags of food which included either a turkey or ham. This equates to around 14,000 pounds of food. **********

While the 4th. of July is some 6 ½ months away, the City of Plant City Recreation & Parks Department is asking for contributions to help re-establish the fabulous 4th. of July Celebration after a three year absence. This event drew a standing room only crowd. Due to budgetary restraints and the economic downturn, this event has been shelved and has remained so for four years.

The major cost of the event is the fireworks, which can run over $25,000 for a 20 minute show. Additional costs for entertainment for both youth and adults leading up to the great fireworks display add to the overall need for financial and in-kind community support.

Contributions from area businesses, non-profits and residents will help cover the costs of the event. Those interested in contributing, either financially, in-kind or by volunteering are asked to contact the Recreation & Parks Department at 813-659-4255 or the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce at 813-754-3707. **********

Judy Martin has been a staple in Plant

City for years. Aside from being someone

who can get things done, she’s probably

best known for her role as the Executive

Director of the South Florida Baptist

Hospital Foundation. Earlier this year,

Martin announced she will be retiring in

May, so we spent a few moments with her

to talk about her career, her role with the

Foundation and its fundraisers.

Focus: Tell me about your career with TECO.Martin: I majored in Home Economics at Florida State University. I graduated under the trimester program the first year they had it. I graduated in April and started working in May. I started as a Home Economist, designing kitchens, demonstrating appliances and doing foods presentations. Then I coordinated the company’s education programs for Plant City and marketed the Load Management Program. I worked for TECO for 32 years before taking early retirement. I knew I wanted to continue to work but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.

Focus: So what brought you to South Florida Baptist Hospital?Martin: Not long after I left TECO, they hired me to be their loaned executive to United Way. I was doing that when someone called me from the hospital and said, “We’re starting a Foundation. You need to apply.” So I did. I was hired to start the Foundation and to help with community affairs. Then, not long after I began working, the Community Affairs Director retired, so I was responsible for both. This was before the hospital was part of Baycare and everyone did double duty. I was organizing health fairs and knew nothing about healthcare since my background was electricity, but I man-aged and learned a great deal. When we joined BayCare, all I had to focus on was the Foundation and I became the Foundation’s first full-time Executive Director.

Focus: And how long have you been with the hospital now?Martin: I started in October of 1995, so it’s been 16 years. When I retire in May, I will have worked a total of 49 years and 3 weeks. I started working with TECO May 6, 1963 and I’ll retire from the hospital at the end of May 2012. I’ve only had two jobs, but they’ve both been great. I’ve been very lucky, as I’ve loved both of them.

Focus: Tell me about your role with the Foundation.Martin: The nice thing about it was that I got to set up the whole organization. It was already chartered with the state and had been granted non-profit status by the IRS, but no money had been raised. We didn’t have donor software, donor records or anything like that. I got to set it all up, which was great since “organizing” is one of my favorite things to do. That’s probably what will be hardest for the new person coming in. The

Foundation is a two-person office; me and the Secretary. Everything has been added incrementally through the years. A new person coming in will get everything all at once. But, it’s not like I’m leaving town. I’ll be around if they have any questions.

Focus: What was your first order of business?Martin: The very first thing we did was to hold a big open house to get people to come to the hospital who hadn’t been there in years. We held the open house in 1997 and that was when the Plant City Cancer Center was opening next door, so we incorporated that into the open house. We organized it more like a social event than a corporate one. We had about 800 people attend. There were food stations all over the hospital. We even had valet parking out front. We did it right! The event was a BIG success and helped people see just how far the hospital had come since it opened in 1953. Then we began fundraising, asking the community to support the Foundation and hospital. Then shortly afterwards, BayCare was formed. Each Foundation in the BayCare system is separate so that all the money raised by the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation stays right here in our community to be used by our hospital.

Focus: The hospital has some great fundraising events.Martin: The first one we added was Diamonds and Denim in 1997. Betty Astin was the first committee chair. I can still remember Greg Snapp saying, “Judy, if you have plenty of good food and you don’t make the men dress up, you’ll never have a problem with attendance.” He was right. We have good food and the men don’t dress up. The next event we added was Lights of Love. It’s not an original idea. Many different com-munities do it, but most hospitals hold the event on their campus instead of downtown. So ours is more of a community event instead of just the hospital. The last thing we added was the Fall Fancy. Each of our fundraisers is a little different. Diamonds and Denim is aimed at men and women, Lights of Love is a family event and Fall Fancy is a women’s event. But we’ve limited the Foundation to the three events. Events are very labor intensive but they’re great friend builders. They help engage people.

We added a Team Member Campaign in 1997 or 1998. Someone said, “Now Judy, don’t get your feelings hurt if a lot of the employees don’t contribute.” Well, that was like waving a red flag in front of me. I had a committee of 10, but I picked people from the

hospital that had a constituency; that others looked up to. We probably had 10 percent participation that first year. Now we have over 80 percent participation. We have the highest percentage of participation of any hospital in the BayCare system. A vendor who does our recognition signage says we have the highest percentage of any hospital he’s aware of. Our last campaign raised the most money ever and had the highest per-centage of participation, even in this bad economy.

Focus: You must have a lot of volunteers to pull off these events.Martin: Yes. Our volunteers are very important to us. They are the life blood of the Foundation. You have to have volunteers with any event. When you’re a small shop like us, you have to count on volunteers, whether they’re volunteers from the community for Diamonds and Denim or Fall Fancy, or volunteers from the hospital for the team mem-ber campaign. Now our Team Member Campaign is so big at the hospital that we have at least one representative from each department on the committee. And depending on the size of the department, they may have more representatives.

Focus: You’ve been involved in a few different capital campaigns during your tenure.Martin: Yes. The first one was for our Pete Beaty Surgery Center that opened in 2000. Bob Tanner was the Chair of the committee. Then we had a capital campaign for the new Jim and Ruby Jean Redman Emergency Center that we opened in 2006. We prob-ably raised money for that project over 2 years because we’d already started raising mon-ey when we did a complete reverse and changed the floor plan. Mike Sparkman was the Chair of that committee. The goal was $1,000,000 and the committee raised $1,300,000 in about 6 weeks. They did a wonderful job, and quickly. My goal was to “sell” all 63 of the rooms, and we did. I wanted every room to have a plaque on it. Mike was also invaluable when we were raising money to build the Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and Vascular Center that opened in 2010. Capital campaigns have always been my favorite part of the job. Everyday is like Christmas while one is going on.

Focus: You’re retiring in May. What are you doing between now and then to prepare?Martin: Well, I’m writing a manual to help with the transition. So much of the job is in my head. My secretary, Lisa Gullinese, is excellent and will be a great deal of help to my successor. I’ll spend time planning for the year. Everything must be planned in advance just to get the meeting rooms at the hospital booked and to line up presenting sponsors for the 3 events. We’ll continue to work on new donors, as that’s always a top priority.

Focus: What’s the plan to fill your role once you retire?Martin: Steve Nierman, COO, has appointed a search committee to assist him in the selection - Joe Sedita, Foundation President, Sylvia Knox, Foundation Vice President and Dub McGinnes, who is Chairman of the Trustees. The job hasn’t been posted yet; it won’t be posted until January. The only reason I announced my retirement so early was to be able to tell my friends, and I felt it only right that I tell Steve first. You know, by the time I finally leave, people are going to be saying, ‘Gosh, I thought she left months ago. Is she still here?’

Focus: What will you miss the most about the job?Martin: The people. You know, when you start a new job, everyone always says, “Oh, we’re like a family here.” But it really is true at South Florida Baptist Hospital. They’ve been great to me and I’ll miss that everyday interaction and sense of belonging.

We’d like to say thanks for all your efforts with the Foundation and wish you best of luck with your retirement. Hopefully, we’ll still see you around. And with any luck, someone may be able to talk you into helping them raise some money for other work in our com-munity.

on the local real estate market, and I have the most recent information

through October. Over the past six months we have seen a somewhat stable market in terms of active inventory. Increases have been in the right areas – Average Sold Price, Median Price and number of Contracts Pended.

This information is on Single Family Homes only and does not include Condos or Townhomes; is only for Plant City Area and is based on the six month period of May through October.

Active/For Sale: 230 (as of 10/31) Down 2.1% from SeptemberDown 36% from October 2010

Properties Sold: 27 (as of 10/31) Down 27% from SeptemberDown 10% from October 2010

Contracts Pended: 55 in October 10% increase over September22% increase over 6 months

Avg Days on Mkt: 120 Avg Sale Price: $150,000Avg List Price/Sale Price Ratio: 95% - 97.3%

Don’t get too excited about the Average Sale Price increasing, as a few big sales can skew that number; however, the increase was more than 35% over September and virtually unchanged from the prior year. As I have said before, the longer your home sits on the market – the less you will get for it. It comes down to your motivation and the level of activity. Price drives activity – Activity drives offers. In my office, we look at 60 day intervals based on activity and market trends.

Talk to your Realtor about updating your Market Analysis. You should also be getting consistent communication from your agent, regardless of the level of activity. A few other questions to ask: What kind of marketing is being done? How well is it marketed in MLS? What does the potential buyer see? If your home is not being marketed properly on the Internet, you are missing the opportunity to sell. Today, more than 87% of buyers start their search on the Internet.

The Walden Lake Community Association Board Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at

School girls’ golf team at the beginning of the season was to win

the state title. A lofty goal, you might think, for a school that has had little success prior to 2010, and had had only one golfer make it to the state tournament as an individual in school history. But, it was not as far-fetched as you might think, considering that the individual golfer who previously made it to state is now the Raider’s head coach and the team who set the goal was coming off an undefeated season, an eighth place finish in the state tournament, and had four starters returning to the team.

When Head Coach Meg Jordan played for the Raider’s in the mid 1980s, she was named as the Tampa Tribune’s Player of Year while setting school records and

advancing to the state tournament. When Jordan returned to her alma mater in 2003 to coach a game she loves and has played for 37 years, she set high standards for her players that they have begun to achieve, especially in the past two years.

“I want Plant City High School to be known for girls’ golf. When people think about the Raiders I want them to think about our program.”

What Jordan wants may already be in the works, as the Raiders ended their most successful golf season in school history with a fifth place finish at the state tournament and the low team score on the second day of competition. This is a statement by the team, that they really are the best team in the state.

After an undefeated 12-0 regular season in 2010, the Raiders took second place at the district tournament, second place at regional competition, and an eighth place finish at the state tournament. This year, the Raiders once again were undefeated in the regular season, but improved on the previous year’s accomplishments by winning the district tournament. They also won the regional tournament that they hosted on their home course at the Walden Lake Golf and Country Club, and they took fifth place in the state tournament held November 1-2.

The team is comprised of three seniors, Belinda George, Shelby Johnson, and Kelsey Jensen; junior Alex Richter; sophomores Kellyanne Hurst and Brooke Wyatt; and freshman Lindsey Box. The three seniors, all have offers to play at

the next level. Johnson and Jensen are still weighing their options, but George has committed to the University of North Florida. Richter, whose home is in Germany, has practiced with the team all year but is ineligible to play because of her status as a foreign exchange student. Hurst, who is expected to lead the team next season, has been a consistent performer all year. Wyatt will contribute next year, and Box, the lone freshman gained a ton of experience.

The Raiders’ accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. Meg Jordan has once again been named Coach of the Year. George was a First Team All-Hillsborough County selection while Hurst, Johnson, and Jensen were selected to the second team.

“It’s been a phenomenal year,” said Jordan. “I’m really proud of these girls. They were disappointed after the first day of the state tournament, but to see them come back on the second day and shoot the lowest total of both days and come in fifth… you got to give them a lot of credit. It was a great ending to a great year.”

MaDIson opferMadison Opfer, the Durant High

School senior golfer, is “living in the moment.”

“One shot at a time, one hole at a time, one day at a time, one tournament at a time. That is how I like to think,” said Opfer. “In golf, you never want to get ahead of yourself, and you can’t live in the past. I like to live in the moment.”

That philosophy has translated into a world ranking of #148 by Golf Week magazine and a scholarship to Tulane University in New Orleans. At 5’4” and 125 lbs., Opfer surprisingly drives the ball 250 yards, but Opfer’s play gets better when the ball stops rolling. Most agree that the best part of her game is her “greens in regulation” average. She averages 10-12 greens reached in regulation per round - a figure that is high even among professionals.

Her journey began when her dad, Tom, brought her with him to ride in the golf cart when he took up the game about eight years ago.

“My dad got me started when I was 11 years old. He started playing a couple of years earlier. He took me with him… I hit the ball and putted some, but I didn’t like it in the beginning. One day everything began to click and I wanted to understand it better.”

Her dad arranged lessons for Madison and her learning curve gathered momentum. In a year’s time, Madison played in her first tournament, a nine-hole event sponsored by the Greater Tampa Junior Golf Association, and she came home with the first place trophy.

“It felt good,” Madison said as she reflected on that first win. “It encouraged

me to want to play more and to get better.”

That was it. From then on, she was driven to excel. The following year she moved up to the next division and since then has been one of the top golfers in her age group. Playing in American Junior Golf Association events and the Florida Junior Tour, Madison has been a consistent contender, placing in the top ten in every tournament she has entered over the past two years.

Madison, who lives in Plant City, plays as a Durant Cougar, but she is actually homeschooled (3.9 GPA) through the Florida Virtual School District. This gives her more flexibility to work on her game and it allows her to work part-time in the pro shop at Bloomingdale Golf Club.

Madison has made the All Conference team the past four seasons. In 2010, she claimed second place individually with a round of 68 and this year she claimed first place with a 69. In all four years, Opfer has advanced through regional competition to the state tournament and has placed in the top ten in the FHSAA State Tournament every year with finishes of ninth, eighth, fourth and third.

When Madison is not on the course, she’s hanging out with friends or relaxing in front of a movie. “I love to go to the theater, but I would just as soon stay home and watch movies.”

With a United States Golf Association handicap of a 1.2, a scholarship to college, and a possible future professionally, Opfer is “living in the moment”… one moment at a time.

BaseBall TeaM of The MonThplant City Little League’s fall season

ended with a wild affair as the two top seeded teams during the

regular season battled to the last out in the city championship game. The top seeded Gamecocks survived a scare from the second seeded Rattlers, winning the Majors Division (11-12 year-olds) title by a score of 11-10 following a fourteen game regular season.

The fact that the Gamecocks were even a participant in the championship game was a surprise to Head Coach Jim DeLuca.

“Before the season began, my idea was

that we were going to have fun and teach basic skills. I wasn’t even thinking of winning a championship. But this team was such a well-rounded team that bonded together, developed friendships, played good defense, and gave 110% every time they went on the field. As the season wore on we learned to win, so when the tournament came around, we shifted gears and were ready for the challenge.”

Indeed they were. The Gamecock team improved throughout the season, aided by timely pitching and hitting, especially from the bat of Cameron Coleman who belted seven homeruns in 14 games. The

biggest nemesis for the Gamecocks was the Rattlers.

The Gamecocks ended the regular reason with a 10-2-2 record while the Rattlers were in second only a half-game behind at 9-3-2. In head-to-head competition, the Gamecocks took two from the Rattlers by scores of 8-6 and 6-2, while the Rattlers took one from the Gamecocks 6-5. The teams tied 3-3 and 2-2 in the other two contests. Therefore, the outcome of the championship game was definitely in question.

The final contest began with a bit of

strategy on DeLuca’s part. Rather than choosing to be the home team, he opted to be the visitors, giving up the security of batting last for a chance to put runs on the board first. Early on, the move looked brilliant. The Gamecocks did exactly as DeLuca hoped. They scored five runs the first inning, three the second, and two the third, building up a commanding 10 run lead while shutting out the Rattlers behind Donald Martindale pitching and Michael McCullers’ three-run homer in the second inning.

DeLuca removed Martindale from the mound at the beginning of the fourth inning and left the game in the hands of his relievers. The Rattlers woke up in the fourth, scoring four runs with a few timely hits, and some costly errors. They continued to put runs on the board in the fifth, duplicating the previous inning with four more runners crossing the plate reducing the lead to two at 10-8 heading into the final frame.

The Gamecocks weren’t giving in and in the top of the sixth inning loaded the bases with one out. Cody Cribbs took a huge lead at third base and broke for home on the pitch, stealing home and giving the Gamecocks another precious run and increasing their lead to 11-8. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, Cribbs daring move surprised everyone including his own teammates and in the confusion, the Rattlers were able to pick off the two remaining runners and a potential big inning was reduced to a solitary run.

The Rattlers scored twice in their final at bat but left the potential tying and winning runs on base when DeLuca’s squad recorded the final out, giving the Gamecocks the championship and an opportunity to celebrate on the field with their coaches and fans.

Brittany Butler has dedicated her high school years to service, swimming and academics. This driven Plant City

High School senior sets the standard for a well-rounded student.

Placing academics as a high priority in her life, Brittany currently holds a 6.14 GPA and a 3.86 unweighted. She is ranked 4th in the PCHS senior class, placing her in the top 1%. To get a head start for college, Butler has also taken a few courses at Hillsborough Community College through the dual enrollment program. Due to her excellence in academics, Butler has been distinguished as an AP scholar, has earned an academic letter, and has been inducted into the National Honor Society. Throughout high school, Butler has had an active role in Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), where she serves as treasurer. She is also involved with Civinettes service club, Best Buddies, Foreign Language Club, and Future Business Leaders of America. From volunteering at the food bank to the South Florida Baptist Hospital, Butler has accumulated more than 150 hours of community service. As a result of hard work and dedication, Butler has earned many honors and awards. In 2008, she won 1st place in the

“Kids are Heroes” contest at St Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. “I was nominated for stepping up in my family in a time of need,” explained Butler. Last year Brittany was a Calendar Girl winner as the 2011 Miss July. Butler has also won the Optimist Outstanding Youth award, the Wendy’s Heisman School award, and the Veterans of Foreign War speech contest.

Brittany has been a member of the girl’s varsity swim team since her freshman year. All four years, she has advanced to both the district and the regional championships, has earned a varsity letter and has been awarded the athletic

scholar award. Brittany has also competed in both the Florida Swimming Senior Championships and Southern Zone Sectionals. Due to her strong leadership and dedication, Butler was awarded the Most Valuable Player award and served as team captain both her sophomore and junior year. Outside of school, Butler also manages to swim for the Blue Wave swim club at the Brandon Sports and Aquatics Center. There she attends eight workouts a week, including the one before school at 4:45 in the morning workout and an after school workout at 3:45. Through Blue Wave, this more than driven swimmer attends various practices and meets. Brittany recently signed to be a swimmer at Florida Atlantic University. There she will swim as well as pursue a major in public relations. Of her achievement she shared, “This is quite an honor and I am extremely proud to be an Owl.”

Having set a successful path for herself, Brittany Butler will embark with the knowledge and dedication that will ensure success in her future.

“i never take the easy way out,” says Thomas Sustek, a Plant City High School senior. He is a

prime example of a leader who uses his knowledge and talents to better both his school and community.

With a 5.35 GPA, Thomas is currently ranked 19th among his class, which puts him in the top 5%. Since his sophomore year, Sustek has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Honor for having passed Advanced Placement course exams. Thomas’s academic drive also impacts his extracurricular activities. Sustek has been a member of the Math League, National Honor Society, and Science Club. These academic clubs both honor and challenge Sustek’s knowledge.

Active also in Key Club and NHS, Thomas has been involved with various service projects as well. These projects include Pioneer Day and the Rock N’ Roses event at the Red Rose Inn. Through the drama department, Sustek also helps with set construction for the different productions put on by the school’s thespians.

As president of the Science Club this year, Thomas has been in charge of preparing for every meeting, as well as preparing his members for competitions. “I enjoy science and wanted to be a major part of the club,” responded Thomas when asked why he wanted to serve as president. The Science Club also participates in other science related events throughout the year, such as judging science fairs at local elementary schools. Thomas has been a member of the varsity track team since his sophomore year. He is one of the top long distance runners at PCHS this year as a result of his hard work and improvement, last year he received the coaches award. As captain of the long distance team his junior year, Thomas also led warm-ups, practices, and meets.

Sustek has had a vast amount of job experience throughout high school as well. Last year, he worked 10 hours a week at Earhart’s Runway Grill at the Lakeland Linder Airport, juggling both work and school. This past summer Thomas was an intern at the Paramount Precision Products machining corporation. For 40 hours a week, Sustek helped the factory with maintenance and with forming a system to help organize the factory. Thomas has recently taken on a new leadership role. Every week he helps coach track at Turkey Creek Middle School. He not only teaches the young athletes techniques he has learned over the years, but he also teaches them to have fun while working hard and improving. In upcoming years, Thomas plans to pursue a major in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. The knowledge and leadership gained throughout high school has put Thomas on the fast track to success.

When DeBaTes hIJack The elecTIon!By the time Florida voters go to

the polls at the end of January, Republican candidates will have

debated more than 25 times.

Whether it’s a Tea Party, CNN, or Newsmax event, or a League of Women Voters or FOX affair, we have heard about everything a candidate could say and could probably answer for them.

Great, you say. It’s democracy at its best. Being a guy in the media, how can I argue otherwise? Still, if you listen to some pundits like GEORGE WILL, a valid argument can be made that having

so many debates does nothing but water down the process and diminish the debates themselves.

Here’s the problem in five parts as I see it.

First, there is a tendency to rate the debates on the scale of winners versus losers. Candidates’ answers are boiled down to a matter of who goofed and who didn’t. That’s not what debates are for. I’ve always felt a debate should be a thoughtful discussion about where a candidate stands on a particular issue. Then we, the audience, can weigh the arguments to determine which candidate more closely reflects our own beliefs. As it stands now,

each debate becomes an opportunity for the host to see which candidate he or she can stump.

Second, the debates tend to be slanted based on the group holding the event. Predictably, the FOX debates tended to ask more questions about the conservative agenda, Tea Party debates were anti-large government, and MSNBC debates seemed more focused on inciting anger among the candidates rather than actually having answers to the questions.

Third, the candidates end up spending so much time in debate preparation that they can’t do the meet and greets in face-to-

face gatherings with the voters. Debate preparation and travel makes the process more expensive. And policy is forced by the format to become 30-second sound bites. Is that doing anyone a favor?

Fourth, the focus is taken off the candidates and ends up on the host. Can you explain to me the logic in having Donald Trump moderate a debate? Who cares whether he is qualified or not? He has an agenda that could still include him jumping into the race if we are to take him at his word.

And finally, gravitas! With so many debates, each one becomes less significant. Voters get bored, the answers sound repetitive, and the ratings on some of the minor networks seem too small to be measured.

Sure, the debates do end up weeding out candidates. Those unable to get traction inevitably drop out and are forced out by their mis-speaks, fumbles, or inability to respond successfully. But as WILL points out, we are not electing a debater-in-chief. We are electing someone we hope can make decisions, someone who has an actual plan for success that can lead this country for the next four years, be that President Obama or someone new.

Those may be intangibles that still require a strong gut check and not, instead, another debate that answers only one question: which candidate is the better debater.

one of my favorite Christmas stories played out when my children were just two-and-a-half and four years of

age. I’ve retold it in many venues, including the opening chapter to my Christmas book, “In My Heart I Carry A Star” (Upper Room Books, 2008). But it sets the stage for December and I’d like to share it one more time.

KIdnappIng:Rebekah and I set up our manger scene under the tree, placing stars and angels on

the lower branches. The idea was to make the Christmas story accessible to Andrew and Naomi. But that year, pretty much as soon as we’d set everything out, every last wise man vanished into thin air, along with their camels. Even the baby Jesus went missing.

Later we found the wise guys, huddled together in a group at the far end of the house. We put them back under the tree, but the next day they disappeared again. The pattern was repeated and I became irritated with the children.

I called a family meeting, brandished the

evidence, and threatened to glue the Magi to their camels or tie them to the tree. “And somebody needs to hand over Jesus,” I said sternly, the meaning of my words lost on me. “Jesus needs to stay in his special place, and from now on I need you to leave him alone!”

sMarter than theIr dad:I was about to read part two of the riot act when Rebekah observed that the wayward group was actually making a little more progress each time we found them. “Let’s leave well enough alone and see what happens,” she advised.

“Leaving well enough alone” has never been a natural reflex for me. But this time I actually took the cue and bowed to my wife’s deeper spiritual intuition. Consequently we were treated to the most amazing stunt ever pulled by two children with a collective age of less than seven.

Journey to bethleheM:Sure enough, every day we awoke to find Melchior, Casper and their friend Balthazar just a few feet closer to the tree. Sometimes the camels lagged behind but they always caught up. By the third week of Advent they’d made it to the dining room, cautiously hugging a table leg or sheltering under a chair.

The day before the night before Christmas, our wandering tribe of stargazing scholars camped out in the open, then dashed past the patio doors before spending two days gazing at the growing pile of gifts just to the east of the tree.

MIracle:When we left for church Christmas Eve, the group was still staring at the presents. I wondered how the final act would play out. I wanted to hide somewhere and watch. But – miraculously – by the time we returned the entire tableau was somehow complete. And, Lord knows how they pulled it off, Jesus himself (on the lam for three and a half weeks) was finally back in the manger.

How a four-year-old could have stashed such a treasure so carefully and for so long I still can’t say. How he kept the secret, and how he got his sister to cooperate, remains a mystery to this day. We never once caught them in the act.

But this I do know: the pantomimed expedition to Bethlehem created an awareness of my own journey that has never left me. When I am wise, I remember that no Christmas scene should ever resemble a museum piece. And the birth of Christ is an interactive celebration, an ageless production that invites the miracle of incarnation into our homes – at exactly the right time.

May this Advent be a season of matchless grace and abiding hope. The wise still seek him.

TerrI McfarlanDterri McFarland hasn’t always realized

she was talented artistically. Her recent awareness began on a road trip

to help people traumatized by a storm.

“In May of 2006,” McFarland explained, “about 10 months after Hurricane Katrina, my daughter Mackenzie and I traveled on a bus with several church groups to New Orleans. When we stopped en route at a Walmart, I suggested we buy sketchpads and draw what we saw. I still remember the enjoyment of sketching a woman as she spoke and then adding a Scripture for inspiration.”

She continued, “That Christmas, my husband Rodger purchased an easel for me. It just sat there for a few months because I didn’t know where to begin. On February 27, 2007 I awoke from a dream and felt inspired to try to paint to music. What unfolded was the piece I call ‘Nightwatch

3:19.’ Now, almost five years later, I love to practice my art.”

McFarland’s home studio occupies two adjoining rooms - one where she paints and one where completed works are displayed. She credits Rodger for his encouragement and God and family for inspiration. Her mother and sister have painted and she acknowledges “the Lord, for impressing things in my mind and spirit.”

McFarland, a Plant City High School graduate (1977), is largely self-taught, although she has spent time watching Plant City’s renowned muralist John Briggs and longtime friend Bob Carter, who owns Drawing Point. Child prodigy Akiane’s work also inspires her, as well as perusing books. She explained, “I paint a lot of landscapes because I see so much beauty in Creation, and in everything around me awaits a picture to be painted.”

“She added, “I’ve played with various media such as graphite, colored pencils, oil, acrylic, and watercolor, but for true relaxation, I especially enjoy drawing. I love the portability of pencils and paper.”

Since five of the children live away with their families, one day McFarland hopes to travel more, especially to climates where the weather includes snow. She likes to paint winter scenes. McFarland explained, “A lot of things I paint, I’ve never seen except in books. It would be great to experience them in person.”

The McFarland’s 16-year marriage includes a blended family of three sons, three daughters, one son-in-love, two daughters-in-love, three grandchildren and a home church family, which Rodger pastors. Mackenzie, 15, is homeschooled and also seems to have inherited the drawing talent.

One day Terri hopes to earn a livelihood from her art, but for now she’s content creating for family and friends, winning some

ribbons in the Strawberry Festival’s art competition, and continuing to develop the gift she believes is from God.

for many years now, Lexus has done their part to usher in the holidays with their Christmas themed car

commercials. You can probably hear the background music now. You know, the commercials where some exceptionally nice person finds a clever way to unveil their Christmas gift to another lucky soul (that special someone in their life) – a new Lexus in the driveway. Funny though; as much as I like those commercials and as many times that I’ve wondered what it would be like to give someone a new car for Christmas, even better, receive a new car for Christmas, I immediately realize how unlikely it is to

happen to me. I’m too picky for anyone to know exactly what I’d want. Yep, not going to happen to me. But these commercials were the inspiration for this month’s Auto Review.

The LS is the top-of-the-line Lexus sedan, and nothing is spared. In fact, the LS is so nice, a well-maintained model several years old could satisfy most people for several years to come. These are just really well made cars.

The LS has one of the nicest interiors, with a focus on comfort, even beyond its rivals – the Mercedes S-Class and the Audi 8. I recall one of the first Lexus

commercials, probably 20 years ago, with the sedan driving the length on some railroad tracks. The image was meant to show the smooth quite ride of the Lexus. I seriously doubt that’s possible, but there’s no argument - the LS delivers an exceptionally quiet, comfortable ride.

Under the hood, the LS has a 357hp V8 engine with all the power needed for a sedan. There’s enough low-end power to get you from lane to lane for those quick adjustments and for merging onto the Interstate, and the top end, well, you probably shouldn’t be driving that fast anyway. But you will. There’s even a sport package available that includes an adjustable air suspension, upgraded brakes and paddle shifters. Although these upgrades do improve the performance of the LS, they also increase the base price significantly.

The LS is available in two body styles,

the LS 460 sport model and the LS 460 L luxury model, and both are available with all-wheel drive – for a price. The LS 460 L is about 5 inches longer and about $5,000 - $6,000 more. If you’re someone looking for a sedan as your daily driver, trust me, the LS is your car. You just won’t find a more comfortable sedan, and the power and handling will be plenty sufficient for most drivers. The LS will set you back a little. Plan to spend between $75,000 - $80,000, or more, to drive one off the lot.

But it will likely be the best money you’ve spent on a car. This one is a keeper.

So if you’re in the market, beware of those Lexus Christmas commercials. They may influence your Christmas shopping.

“Brunch with Santa” at the Red Rose Inn and Suites should be on everyone’s to-do list this

holiday season. Mrs. Evelyn Madonia has “outdone herself ” with the special brunch offered each Sunday in December that appeals to all ages and enhances that festive holiday spirit.

The Brunch with Santa has an awesome menu. The food selection on the first weekend in December consisted of well prepared breakfast items coupled with a luncheon spread filled with favorites. Guests preferring breakfast had a choice of made-to-order omelets, Eggs Benedict, sausage, bacon, Belgium Waffles, cheese blitz and pastries. The breakfast entrees could be combined with the vast array of luncheon specialties including prime rib, glazed ham, fried chicken, grilled salmon, herb grilled chicken with rice, sweet potatoes, boiled shrimp, lobster bisque, seafood penne pasta and several choices of vegetables and fruits. The brunch was set up in five stations which allowed the guests to move around with ease with no waiting in lines. Another added touch to the menu was a wonderful selection of favorite foods for children, which included

chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese among all the other choices.

As guests were enjoying their meals, Bruce of “Destiny” entertained with live background music. Robert Jones, the Dining Room Manager for the Sunday Brunch greeted each guest to ensure that each diner felt valued and appreciated. The real star of the day was of course, Santa. Santa had the legendary rosy red cheeks with the authentic beard and the lovable twinkle in his eyes. Only Mrs. Evelyn could get the “real” Santa away from the North Pole to get the wish lists from the young children and the young at heart at the special Sunday Brunches.On this particular Sunday, the visit with Santa captivated three-year-old Ellie Mueller of Tampa. She sat in his lap to describe in detail the computer games she wanted to find under her tree. She promised Santa that she had been good. Ellie enjoyed not only Santa, but also the meal. The 30-pound little girl filled up one plate and ate everything on it, then went back for seconds. She exclaimed to her Mimi, “This is yummy!” Ellie’s personal favorite was the Belgium Waffle with strawberries, piled high real whipped cream.

Also mesmerized by Santa were Jayce (age 4) and Jayden (age 7) Church of Gibsonton. The two little guys were enjoying brunch with their father, Johnie Church. Jayce asked Santa for a guitar and a racecar with track. Jayden was specific when he asked Jolly Saint Nick for an Apple iPad and an “Alvin and The Chipmunks” movie. Their dad,

Johnie, an Offensive/Defensive Lineman for the University of Florida in 1992-1995, did not need to give Santa his wish for Christmas. Santa knew that a Southeastern Conference Championship in 2012 would top Johnie Church’s list.

Each child at the brunch received a gift from Santa. A plastic holiday cup was filled with mini coloring books, eraser, crayons and other treats. The final “station” of the fabulous brunch was filled with delectable desserts. Kellie Wood, a server at the Red Rose, helped little Ellie with her dessert selection. Ellie chose more fruit with real whipped cream and pretty white chocolate covered holiday cookies. She looked at Kellie and said, “Kellie is so beautiful!”

fashioned candy store to fit perfectly right into the historic downtown

Plant City. Located just off the corner of Collins and Drane Street across from McCall Park, Neumeister’s is the cure for Plant City’s sweet tooth.

The name Neumeister’s is steeped in chocolatiering history: the founder, David Neumeister, immigrated from Germany (“The Land of Chocolate”) to Upper Sandusky, Ohio in 1877 and began selling his candies at a small counter inside a bakery. Word of Neumeister’s mastery of sweets spread and soon he had to open up a whole shop devoted to supplying his goodies.

Neumeister’s candies has continued to be a local and statewide hit in Upper Sandusky to this very day. Ohio transplants, Glenn and Jill Nickolson, decided to bring the Neumeister’s good name to Plant City when they opened their own shop this past July. We at Focus decided to pay the Nickolson’s shop a visit and sample the tradition and decadence of their handmade chocolates.

The first thing that srikes the eye upon

entering is the shop’s openness. A nice glass window for spectators separates the sales floor and the chocolate prep kitchen, so patrons can see their chocolates being freshly prepared.

Then, of course, candy cases line the west and north areas of the sales floor, displaying the varieties of sweets offered by Neumeister’s. For sale by the pound, the shop stocks more than 50 types of Jelly Belly jellybeans, along with other old-fashioned candies like hard-candy ribbons and gummy treats.

Of these sundry candies, Glenn shares a touching story of a local army wife who came into his shop to purchase American-made candies for a care package she was sending to her husband defending our country overseas in Afghanistan. Gummy bears are his favorite, so Glenn special ordered a unique type of American-made gummy bear that will shock the casual gummy lover with their size, flavors, and soft, chewy texture.

Giving back to our soliders and law enforcement officers is one of the many things Glenn prides about his business. For those brave men and women protecting this country, Glenn gives out

custom molded chocolates in the shapes of the armed services and local law enforcement shields. In fact, Neumeister’s has over 500 custom molds for anyone who would like to customize their sweets for all seasons and occasions.

Not to be overlooked is the shop’s large variety of specialty chocolate creations, such as Neumeister’s signature Bullseye candy, a chocolate truffle filled with peanut butter crème. Another that will also bring tears to your eyes is the chocolate turtle with fresh, handmade caramel that cannot be compared to any type of commercial caramel you may have tried

before. They offer many of their specialty chocolates in both milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Gift baskets for holidays or special occasions are also a great choice for anyone who has been extra nice this year.
