    Jeffrey Paul Lambe, John Joseph Phillips and Kevin DesmondFitzMaurice were the first graduates of Trent’s Native Studies Ph.D.program. In 1997, the Department of Native Studies initiated the program – the first of its kind in Canada. The first students entered theprogram in September 1999.

    The program is unique in its structure; it is interdisciplinary in natureand based on the integration of Indigenous and Western academicknowledge. Prof. David Newhouse, of the Native Studies department,says the graduates’ research was innovative and cutting-edge, encompassing academic, cultural and experiential learning.• Dr. Lambe’s dissertation, We Plant a Tree of Peace: Mohawk Chief Jake

Kenneth Fowler received theEminent Service Award which recognizes individuals who havemade outstanding contributionsto the life of the University in anyarea of its activities. Mr. Fowler,who retired from his position asapparatus design technician withthe Department of Physics last fallwas recognized for his 37-plusyears of service to the Universityand in particular, his outstandingcontributions in the areas ofinstrument design and researchsupport.

    Symons Award forExcellence in TeachingDr. Carolyn Kay, an associateprofessor in the Department ofHistory, received the SymonsAward for Excellence in Teachingwhich is presented annually to a

    faculty member who displaysexemplary teaching, as well asconcern for students. Prof. Kayhas an M.Phil from Oxford andan M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale. Prof.Conolly, former President, is aScholar of the Academy of theShaw Festival and has been read-ing, seeing and studying Shaw’swork for 45 years. He waselected a Fellow of the RoyalSociety of Canada in 2002, andhas been a Senior Member ofRobinson College, Cambridge,since 1981. Prof. Conolly has anM.A. from McMaster and a Ph.D.from Wales, and joined Trent asits fifth president in 1994. ❦

  • Nursing is in her genes

    Graduate and Symons Medalwinner Barbara Longlandcomes from a long line of nurses,and is now married to one. She,too, had wanted to pursue theprofession since she was five.

    Though she tried to go backto school in 1990, as a singlemother with four children, shefound it too difficult. Instead, shestarted a residential cleaningbusiness which she continues tomanage today.

    While she describes the transi-tion she went through in 2001 togo back to school “overwhelm-ing,” Ms. Longland finds herself achanged person, due in part, tothe time she spent this year inZimbabwe for her individualpractice placement. She spent ashortened seven weeks at theSalvation Army’s HowardHospital in Zimbabwe in Januaryand found a culture and condi-tions she says “you can hardlyimagine”.

    This summer, Ms. Longland isheading to Guyana for twoweeks with the Mission for

    “Lynda is an outstanding student whose accomplishmentsnot only put her at the top ofher class at Trent, but also estab-lish her as an exceptional newscholar within the national context,” states Dr. Joan Sangster,director of Trent’s Frost Centrefor Canadian Studies and NativeStudies.

    Ms. Mannik graduated withher Masters of Arts in CanadianStudies and Native Studies, andpreviously, with her Bachelor ofArts, from Trent. An entrepreneurand small business owner, aswell as a single mother, Ms.Mannik returned to school part-time in 1995.

    “I always had a passion for it,”says Ms. Mannik, adding she hadwanted to go back to school eversince she had left in grade 10.

    Ms. Mannik pursued part-time undergraduate studies forfour years and ran her business;she graduated with a doublemajor in anthropology and history in 2002 and continuedon with graduate studies throughthe Frost Centre.

    Her thesis, Transcultural Viewsof Indian/Cowboy Performance atthe Royal Easter Show in Sydney,1939, presents five different perspectives of this single eventto emphasize how visual repre-sentation is, in varying degrees,intercultural, social in nature andbased on relationships of power.In summer 2006, the Universityof Calgary Press will publish themanuscript for not only univer-sity and graduate students, butalso for general readers interestedin Canadian history.

    Ms. Mannik received anOntario Graduate Scholarship todo her masters degree and is nowthe recipient of a prestigiousCanadian Graduate Scholarship,

    which sees her receive $35,000 ineach of three years.

    Inspired by “all” her professors,Ms. Mannik attributes much ofher success to her M.A. thesiscommittee members and sheaspires to one day, teachCanadian Studies. But in the

As well, she hopesthat an upcoming interview andsite visit in Albuquerque, NewMexico, will land her the job ofher dreams; to work full-time ina neonatal intensive care unit.During her visit to Zimbabwe,she realized her calling was towork with newborns.

    A love of learning“For me, it’s such a privilege…”

    Lynda Mannik loves Canada.In fact, every paper she’s writtenin her nine-year academic careerhas focused on Canada – manyon First Nations’ political issues.

    So when she received theGovernor-General’s Gold Medalfor the student with the highestacademic standing in the masters and doctoral degreeprograms, it was that muchmore exhilarating.

    The daughter of immigrants,her father from Estonia and hermother from England, Ms.Mannik isn’t sure why she’s sofocused on Canada, but is nowexamining international views ofthe country between the 1930sand 1950s as part of her Ph.D.studies at York University. Herpatriotism and passion for learn-ing combined have earned heran array of academic accolades.

    medalwinners…Kristine Anne Williamson, of JulianBlackburn College, received the BagnaniMedal, awarded to students in the general program who achieve high overall standing on graduation.

    Ms. Williamson studied part-time andworked full-time as she completed herhistory major. She is interested in publichistory, specifically museums and archival work, as well art history,and would like to eventually completeher honours year and pursue a masters degree in art history and work in artsadministration or as a gallery curator. In the meantime, Ms. Williamson willpursue a two-year esthetics course atSeneca College and perhaps look to openher own spa.

    Top student flying highCristina Chifor, B.Sc. Hons. and Symons Medal winner reflects on the highlights of her time at Trent. This joint physics and computer science major writes from the Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA site in Maryland, US. This is her third summer there as aresearch assistant. She studies solar flares which are closely related tounderstanding space weather.

    Ms. Chifor, who was on theDean’s List in each of her four years, was an international studentfrom Romania who chose to come to Trent. The Trent InternationalProgram supported her with a fullinternational scholarship. Ms. Chifor is bound for the University of Cambridge in the fall, where three scholarships will enable her to read for a Ph.D. in three years.

    Academic Interests: “Physics, in particular astrophysics. Sciencehas come a long way in the past century and has changed theway in which we perceive the world around us. Space and theuniverse are the ultimate challenges; I admire the people whodedicate their careers to understanding what is beyond the skies.”

    Highlights of her time at Trent: “It would be impossible to list themall. I will just mention my first days in Canada, at the TrentInternational Program camp. I was impressed with the diversity –lots of international students in a small university – and with howfriendly Canadians are.”

    On her Trent experience: “Life changing. I am grateful to the people who have made it possible for me to come to Canada and to those that I was lucky to meet and have supported methroughout.” ❦

  • Giannetti George, more com-monly known as “Gigi” says shehas a healthy disregard for theimpossible and believes she cando anything. This month, she’sheaded home to St. Lucia, whereshe hopes to share her outlookwith her secondary school students.

    Ms. George is among three St.Lucians who graduated fromTrent this year. Along with KevinScotland and Allan Thomas, Ms.George left the island of fewerthan 200,000 people to study atTrent. It seems remarkable for asmall university in centralOntario to have so many gradu-ates from a small island in theCaribbean, but this is evidenceof the breadth and depth ofTrent’s reputation and therecruitment efforts of the TrentInternational Program’s (TIP’s)Cindy Bennett Awe in theregion, says TIP Director MikeAllcott.

    At 17 and right out of highschool, Ms. George startedteaching grade four, but aftereight years in the classroom,believed it was time to fulfill herdream and become a scientist.

    She graduated with a major inbiology and a minor in environ-mental science and planned toreturn home the day after herconvocation hoping to teachand to one day, have a hand indeveloping environmental sci-ence curriculum in her country.

    During her time at Trent, Ms.George was vice chairperson ofthe Trent International StudentAssociation (TISA) in her thirdyear, responsible for the co-ordi-nation of major campus eventsincluding Cultural Outreach,World Affairs Colloquium andthe TISA Potluck. All the while,she worked part-time forAramark Food Services. In 2004,Ms. George attended theLeaderShape Institute at theUniversity of Illinois, where shelearned about leadershipthrough a demandingly rigidcurriculum. She was the firstperson to attend the institutefrom a Canadian university.

    It took Allan Thomas, betterknown as “Perry” 20 years to getto graduation. Though he hadhoped to study in England afterhigh school graduation, financesdidn’t allow it. This June, hegraduated with a Bachelor ofBusiness Administration, whichhe combined with studies ininternational political economy.

    Mr. Thomas had alwayswanted to study abroad, butinstead, he “let it rest” andbecame involved in everythingelse he could. He went to workas an office assistant in govern-ment and in the accounts andthen sales department for a private company. He even

    started his own business andentered politics.

    “The most significant thingthat has happened in my lifewas entering politics, it changedmy perspective dramatically…itmade me realize my weak-nesses…not having the knowl-edge and skills to perform eventhough you have talents andabilities.”

    Mr. Thomas was appointed asenator by the prime ministerand served for two years. He wasalso chairman of the conserva-tion authority. In politics, herealized he needed to go back toschool and get the education hehad desired.

    In 2001, Mr. Thomas came toCanada and to Trent and in sec-ond year, he was asked to runfor TISA and became its co-chair.In that role, Mr. Thomas authoreda new constitution that wouldsee TISA not as a group amonggroups, but as an organizationof groups. In his third year, oncethe constitution was implemented,Mr. Thomas became speaker ofthe board. He also sang with theTISA Choir and the Trent GospelChoir.

    Mr. Thomas, who is father tothree daughters, is headinghome to St. Lucia this year forthe first time in four years, butsays he will look forward tocoming back to Canada. He hasbeen accepted to do his mastersdegree in public policy andmanagement at CarletonUniversity this fall.

    While Kevin Scotland is nowan alumnus, he won’t be goingfar – he will be working for thecoming year with Dr. AndrewVreugdenhil in Trent’sChemistry department. Mr.Scotland will be continuing thework he started as part of hishonours thesis with Prof.Vreugdenhil, the creation of thinfilms from silicon materials, as aresearch assistant.

    Mr. Scotland, who says hewas ready for a change ofscenery after high school, choseTrent because of its relativelysmall size. Many things standout for him as he reflects on his

    four years at Trent, but mainlythe “wonderful” people he had the opportunity to meet – professors and students alike.

    “I got to meet students frommany different cultures and Idon’t think I would have hadthat experience anywhere else,”he says.

    Mr. Scotland found his pas-sion for chemistry in first yearand for the last two years, hasbeen running a help session forstudents in first-year chemistry.He was also a teaching assistantin first-year chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

    And while Mr. Scotland isplanning to pursue graduate studies, he would also like tohead home to St. Lucia at somepoint. He misses the seas and the summer here, he says, is too hot. ❦

    Graduate Alanna Grant saysshe’s always been interested inaltered brain chemistry. So, whenshe read about the schizophreniaresearch of Dr. Cecilia Flores atMcGill University, she wasintrigued. A meeting with Dr.Flores and a masters degree pro-posal later, Ms. Grant is off to theDepartment of Neuroscience andNeurosurgery at McGill this fall.

    She’s received a $17,500Canada Graduate Scholarship(CGS) from the NationalSciences and EngineeringResearch Council of Canada(NSERC). This prestigious schol-arship is awarded to students ofhigh academic success who areentering postgraduate studies.

    “The brains of schizophrenicsare structurally and functionallydifferent from other people. Weknow that environmental factorssuch as obstetrical difficultiescan cause alterations in brainsand these changes resemblethose seen in schizophrenicpatients, however we don’t knowexactly how this happens,” saysMs. Grant. “The goal of theresearch that I will be doing nextyear is to elucidate the cellularand biochemical mechanismsthrough which perinatal injuryleads to these changes.Ultimately, if we can figure outhow these changes occur in thedeveloping brain, then we coulddevelop a way of counteringthese effects and potentiallydecrease the risk of developingthis terribly debilitating disease.”

    working with Dr. Janet Yee, ofthe Department of Chemistry, on the organism Giardia lamblia,which causes Beaver Fever. Forthis work, she has received aNational Sciences andEngineering Research CouncilUndergraduate Student ResearchAward (USRA).

    Ms. Grant came to Trent fouryears ago as a mature student.She graduated high school in1996 and went on to train andthen work as a registered mas-sage therapist for two yearsbefore she realized pain in herhands would prevent her fromcontinuing her career long term.While she was apprehensive togo back to school, she soonrediscovered her love of learning.

    “Trent, because of its intimatenature, provided the opportu-nity for someone like me to goback to school. This put me ona totally different path, and nowI want to stay in school forever,”says Ms. Grant. ❦

    With this philosophy, he’s offto Queen’s University as part ofthe Queen’s-Trent ConcurrentEducation program to become ateacher. This scholar and varsitysoccer player hopes to teachhigh school chemistry, mathand physics, as well as coach,though he hasn’t completelyruled out a masters degree.

    Mr. Stevens says that he’sinspired to make learning inter-esting for his future students,and adds that it’s the applica-tion of science that makes it so.

    Last summer Mr. Stevensworked as a research assistantwith Dr. Bill Atkinson, of theDepartment of Physics. He hadreceived a National Science andEngineering Research Council(NSERC) Undergraduate StudentResearch Award for this work,which focused on superconduc-tors. With Prof. Atkinson, Mr.

    Stevens has been studying theeffect of bi-layer splitting on thelocal density of states in a high-temperature superconductor.

    Mr. Stevens has been namedan Academic All-Canadian forthe last three years, havingachieved an above 80 per centaverage and participated in var-sity athletics. A member of themen’s soccer team for the lastthree years, he was this yearnamed Most Valuable Player andlast year received the Coach’sAward. ❦

    “I have broad interests when itcomes to academics. I am a regis-tered nurse and have been workingin the vocational rehabilitation andcareer and employment counsellingfield for the past 13 years. I decidedto take my degree in psychologybecause it tied in nicely with thework I am currently doing. I alsohave a strong interest in businessand took a number of electivecourses related to this area.”

    She’s also heading back to herroots – Ms. Butler was born inNewfoundland and lived thereuntil she was 12. Her affinity forthe east was rekindled as she readBaltimore's Mansion during hertime at Trent.

    Though she’s never lived inNew Brunswick, Ms. Butler loveseastern Canada and says she’ssure to have the “Canadian expe-rience” studying there. But herown Canadian experience won’tend out east – Ms. Butler hopesto have the opportunity to live inas many provinces as possible.

    Ms. Butler is starting theUniversity of New Brunswick two-year thesis-based programwith a $3,000 merit award and a$20,000 teaching assistantship.But having been inspired by herTrent professors to pursue acareer in academe, she won’treally be leaving Trent behind.She sees herself someday teachingin an atmosphere similar to thatat Trent. She says she will takeaway with her a fondness forteaching and learning in an intimate environment as well as athing or two about professor-student relationships. ❦

  • AS SHE LISTENED to Canada’snational anthem play at the PanAmerican field hockey champi-onship in Puerto Rico, it all cametogether for School of Educationand Professional Learning part-time program graduate AmyHollingsworth.

    There as manager for TeamCanada’s junior women as theyattempted to qualify for theWorld Cup in March, Ms.Hollingsworth realized that shewas, in fact, doing what she hadtrained for and aspired to formany years.

    “It all connected,” she said.“This is where I should be andthis is where my teaching andcoaching come together – righthere, right now.”

    Ms. Hollingsworth had beentold for years that coaching wasnot “a valuable teaching experi-ence,” and it was not until shebecame a student in Trent’steacher education program thatshe realized the two were, in fact,intertwined.

    “When I came to Trent, Iexpected to learn teaching funda-mentals…but what I reallylearned is that my teaching self isintegrated in my coaching self.Trent affirmed that the twobelonged together. Trent allowedme to explore and connect myteaching experience and mycoaching experience in the class-room.”

    Ms. Hollingsworth had alwayswanted to be a phys-ed teacherand so, after high school gradua-tion, pursued phys-ed and his-tory as well as varsity fieldhockey at York University. Whenshe didn’t get into teacher educa-tion after graduation, sheenrolled in the post-graduaterecreation leadership program at

    Hockey team to Puerto Rico forthe Pan American Championships– a World Cup qualifying eventand was in Vancouver andCalifornia with her CanadaGames squad in May. InSeptember, she will travel toSantiago, Chile, with TeamCanada to compete at the WorldCup. All of this, she says shecouldn’t have done without thesupport of the School ofEducation faculty members,specifically Director Dr. DeborahBerrill.

    “Deborah has been so sup-portive – she knew where I wasstarting and she knew where myfinishing point would be,” saysMs. Hollingsworth. “That’s theTrent experience, making thoseconnections and valuing people.Thank you, Trent.” ❦

    HONOURS BACHELOR OF ARTSgraduate Erin Reynolds didn’tthink she wanted anything to dowith teaching – she came toTrent to study English and his-tory, as well as German.

    But today she’s bound for theUniversity of Toronto to pursuea masters degree; a Ph.D. willfollow, as will a career as a professor with a healthy compo-nent of teaching. While Ms.Reynolds comes from a long lineof educators and it seems, teach-ing is in her blood, she was alsoinspired to teach during hertime at Trent.

    This English major firstlycites her invaluable relationshipswith her own professors, as wellas her experience working as aresearch assistant with Dr. ZailigPollock, of the Department ofEnglish Literature. In assistingProf. Pollock with a book on P.K.Page’s poetry, Ms. Reynolds

    found her affinity for research.She continues to work with Prof.Pollock this summer.

    But working with Drs.Elizabeth Popham and JamesNeufeld as a facilitator forEnglish 205 – Form and Context– Ms. Reynolds says she finallyrealized what her future wouldhold. As a facilitator, she rantutorials, monitored Web CTstudent discussions and com-mented on student assignments.

    Ms. Reynolds will start at U ofT this fall with a $17,500 SocialSciences and HumanitiesResearch Council of Canadascholarship. She’s particularlyinterested in modernism and20th century British literature,specifically, James Joyce andconnections between literature,geography and history. ❦

    FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE gradu-ate Scott Farrow, there’ssomething in the water at Trent– something that attracted himhere and something that helpedhim attain academic and ath-letic success.

    “I was lured by the river run-ning through (the campus),”says Mr. Farrow, who was listedon the Dean’s Honour Roll upongraduation and was a memberof the varsity swim team forfour years. “There’s somethingabout the water.”

    Mr. Farrow started swimmingcompetitively in his last year ofhigh school and decided to give

    it a try his first year at Trent.Though he says he struggled atfirst, he grew to love the sportmore and more. In second year,he qualified for the CanadianInteruniversity Sport (CIS)Championships in Victoria andin third year, qualified for theCanadian Open in Quebec andonce again, for CIS in Toronto.

    This past fall, Mr. Farrowqualified for the Canadian Openin Calgary and won a goldmedal in the 200-metre freestylerelay as well as a bronze in asecond relay event. In addition,Mr. Farrow won the OUA divi-sional championship in the

    But below zero temperatureswill soon be far behind this 22year-old international studentand global studies graduate, whois heading to theUniversity of Hawai’iat Manoa this fall.There, she’ll pursue amasters degree inanthropology havingreceived the East-WestCenter GraduateDegree Fellowship andfull scholarship.

    Her nickname,“Wow” is the word“kite” in Thai. She wasgiven the name,because kites take offand fly high. She’slived in India and Myanmar, andspent her third year in Japan atKansai Gaidai University explor-ing Asian Studies. Her graduatework will stem from her studiesthere, focussing on the impactsof globalization, tourism andurbanization on Thai Women andchildren. Specifically, she has

    proposed to research transna-tional human trafficking inThailand.

    Ms. Pongpanich received a full scholarship to Trent. Serendipitously, she says, it wasthe only scholarship she applied

    for. She attended interna-tional schools in Thailandand feels at home in amulticultural community.

    “I’ll never need to pay fora hotel (room) for the restof my life – everywhere Igo, there will be someone Iknow,” she says, addingshe chose also to apply tothe University of Hawai’ibecause of its multicultur-alism. “Being in a multicul-tural setting is natural forme – it’s home for me. It’salso why I chose Canada.”

    Passionately involved in theinternational student community,Ms. Pongpanich sang in the TrentInternational Student Association(TISA) Choir, and in second year,sat on the TISA board commit-tee. She also took part inCultural Outreach – a studentshowcase of culture and artisticabilities for three years. ❦

    50-metre butterfly and set a newOntario university record. Lateron that season, Mr. Farrowattended two more meets – the OUA championships in St. Catherine’s and CIS in Edmonton. At the OUA championship, Mr. Farrowearned a bronze medal in the50-metre butterfly and at the CISChampionships in Edmonton,narrowly missed a birth to theWorld University games beingheld this summer in Izmir,Turkey.

    “The experiences that I’vebeen able to have over the lastfour years I’ll remember for therest of my life,” says Mr. Farrow,who trained up to 30 hours aweek between September andJuly. ❦

    ACCESS TO THE TEACHING professionwas the philosophy behindTrent’s School of Education andProfessional Learning part-timeprogram, which saw its first classof 58 convocate on June 3.

    The first program of its kind inthe province, part-time teachereducation at Trent caters to indi-viduals who cannot attend classesin the daytime, says Dr. DeborahBerrill, program director. Classesare scheduled for one Saturdayeach month and two eveningseach week, though students mustalso spend 61 days over thecourse of two years in a class-room, complete 15 days at analternative placement and spendthree weeks tutoring.

    Dr. Berrill marvels at the grad-uates, most of whom have full-time jobs and families and a largepercentage of whom drive closeto an hour to get to classes. Sheadds she believes there were alsohalf a dozen babies born to her students.

    “It’s extraordinarily humblingto see the lengths to which peo-ple will go to become a teacher,”she says, adding the part-time

    students have very diverse back-grounds and are slightly older thanthose in the full-time program.

    Bob BurgarAs a professional archaeologistand coordinator of heritage pro-jects with the Toronto and RegionConservation Authority, BobBurgar realized his favourite partof the job was working with stu-dents. While after 18 years, acareer change wasn’t going to beeasy, Mr. Burgar, father to a 12-year-old girl and eight-year-oldboy and husband to a Trentalumna, kept his full-time job andbecame a part-time student.

    “Being a teacher is what I’mmeant to be. There’s a calling,” hesays. His driving from RichmondHill two nights a week for twoyears is a testament to his visionand commitment.

    As part of his position with theconservation authority, Mr.Burgar has run a grade 12 creditcourse since the early eighties andfor his work, was nominated forthe Governor General’s Award forExcellence in Teaching CanadianHistory. Mr. Burgar has accepted a

    secondary school teaching positionwith York Region District SchoolBoard and says that the “cool factor” is his secret to success.

    “If it’s cool and fun, the kidsare going to pay attention.”

    TWENTY TRENT-FLEMING School ofNursing graduates have beenhired in the school’s backyard, bythe Peterborough Regional HealthCentre (PRHC).

    The graduates have signed onfor part-time positions with PRHCfor one and two years, and inreturn, received signing bonusesin addition to an amount equiva-lent to their final year’s tuition. Inits fifth year, the hospital pro-gram has seen 111 local nursinggraduates hired by PRHC as partof the program and of those, 83per cent have stayed on at theHealth Centre.

    The opportunity is open toTrent-Fleming students who havecompleted their consolidation,also known as clinical practiceplacement, in an area of PRHCthat has an opening, explainsPRHC Vice-President and ChiefNursing Officer Wendy Fucile,adding the result is an easier transition for the nurse and forhospital staff members, who havealready worked with him or her.

    The program started when itbecame clear that there would bea nursing shortage. With a newhospital on the horizon, Ms.Fucile says it was a proactiveapproach to staffing. The programis not limited to Trent-Fleminggraduates, though more than 95per cent of those who have takenpart are graduates of the program.

    “With this program in place,these graduates are less likely toleave the community, and weknow it’s harder to get them backlater,” says Ms. Fucile, addingnovice nurses are partnered witha preceptor as part of a mentoring

    program at PRHC. “This is a suc-cessful approach – a great way forgraduates to make the transition.”

    Kate Kincaid, academic teamleader, Institute for Healthy Agingand Nursing, Fleming College,says “The win-win for our stu-dents and the hospital was and isobvious, but on a relational levelit is another example of thought-ful partnerships and solid leader-ship in our community. Healthhuman resources is a very com-plex circumstance and this innov-ative approach to local problem-solving is being emulated in otherhospitals. We look forward tomore opportunities with our localhealth care providers and our stu-dents appreciate the practice andlearning support provided.”

    THE TRENT-FLEMING SCHOOL ofNursing celebrated the first of itscollaborative four-year programgraduates on June 3. In total, 57students received Bachelor ofScience in Nursing Degrees – 35of them from the first collabora-tive four-year program.

    The school currently offers acollaborative four-year programand an accelerated three-year pro-gram for students who have hadprevious university experience.While the same courses areoffered in both programs, thereare two delivery models. This yearmarks the accelerated program’ssecond graduating class.

    Brigitte BlazinaBrigitte Blazina brought evidence-based practice to her clinical rota-tion in labour and delivery atCornwall Community Hospital.She obtained the research evi-dence to challenge hospitalrestriction of food and fluid towomen in active labour and isleading her hospital to be the firstinstitution in Ontario to have awritten policy enabling women inactive labour to eat and drink.

    “Brigitte had the courage totake on a cultural norm – torestrict food and fluid in labour –and live her knowledge,” saysProf. Michele McIntosh, addingMs. Blazina has been hired by thehospital. “She exemplifies the bestqualities of a nursing graduate.”

    The reason women arerestricted from eating and drink-ing during labor is fear of aspira-tion of stomach contents intotheir lungs in the event of a c-sec-tion. Ms. Blazina’s research detailsthe antiquated rationales uponwhich this is based and concludesthat although slight risk does existin rare circumstances, the policyof food and fluid restriction isoverwhelmingly applied in con-trast to the likelihood of risk ofreal aspiration, explains Prof.McIntosh.

    Her institution, inspired byher, has obtained the Cochranedata base (to guide evidence-

    Jackie LevereFor Jackie Levere, nursing com-bined her desire to work in a“hands-on helping profession”with her interest in biology. Nowemployed on a general surgeryfloor at a teaching hospital inOttawa, Ms. Levere says shewanted to become a nurse to provide comfort to those in diffi-cult situations and to decrease thevulnerability they experiencewhilst dealing with challengedhealth.

    One of the beauties of nursing,she says, is the countless opportu-nities it offers, of which she isinterested in exploring many. Ms.Levere believes her next step willbe in the direction of bedside pal-liative care and to provide sup-port to those who are dealingwith death and dying.

    During her time at Trent, Ms. Levere says she enjoyed theoutdoor opportunities andbecoming involved in servicessuch as Hospice Peterborough.She also highlights the caringnature of the nursing program. ❦

    Having always wanted to be ateacher, Ms. Crowe, also a Trentcomputer science graduate, ful-filled all of the components of theprogram despite numerous hospi-talizations, surgeries and two

    intense rounds of radiation therapy. Ms. Crowe also workedfull-time in the Registrar’s Officeat Trent.

    While she says being at workduring the day and school atnight was a great diversion andhelped her maintain a positiveattitude, she spent many latenights studying.

    “The program’s faculty is veryaccommodating to everyone’sneeds; if there are challenges likeI had, it’s possible…” ❦

Three years later, this 37-year-old mother of twoteenage boys has been hired bythe Peterborough RegionalHealth Centre (PRHC) and isworking in surgical services. Shecredits much of her success tothe loving support of her sons,her parents, her high schoolsweetheart, and her classmates.As well, she gives credit andthanks her professors, clinicalinstructors, and her preceptor atPRHC, Andrea Keating, RN.

    In 2000, Ms. Longford’s hus-band passed away after a longfight with leukemia. She says shewitnessed wonderful care bysome very inspiring nurses at

    Summer Conferencesat Trent

    For groups from across Ontario,gathering at Trent University forsummer conferences has becomea tradition.

    Campus Challenge, run by theChinese Youth Church Group, hasbeen coming to the campus forits annual activities for more than15 years and will be among the45 groups using the facilities this summer. From the Sir WilliamOsler Science Camp to KOSTACanada, a Korean youth churchgroup with 800 involved, theUniversity will be abuzz withactivity.

    The summer will be a busy one,welcoming new and returninggroups, says Conference ServicesDirector Ashok Kaushik.

    The Full Gospel Businessmen’sFellowship group has a long his-tory of summer conferences atTrent and will be welcomed againthis year. Trent has already hostedthis summer, Conserving theModern in Canada, MNRLeadership Training and theHidden Costs / InvisibleContributions symposium. Otherhighlights will include the wel-coming of TV Ontario for the firsttime as well as Ontario SpeedSkating, which has been visitingcampus for more than 10 years.

    Local Student Awarded Scholarship

    Trent University has awarded itsmost prestigious scholarship to alocal high school student for thesecond time this year.

    St. Peter’s Secondary Schoolstudent Stephen McCarthy is therecipient of Trent’s secondChamplain Scholarship, valued at$20,500 over four years. Mr.McCarthy has accepted the schol-arship and hence, Trent’s offer ofadmission. Last month, PCVS stu-dent Matt Whitfield was awardedthe first of the two scholarships.

    Champlain Scholarships areawarded to students enteringtheir first year of study at Trent,and recognize exceptionally highacademic achievement andpromise. Two scholarships areawarded yearly. This year, thevalue of the scholarship has beenraised from $17,500 to $20,500 torecognize the increasingly excep-tional calibre of student applicants.

    New StudentOrientation Begins

    New Student Orientation (NSO) isa program hosted by TrentUniversity to ease the transitionto the university environment. Inits third consecutive year, the pro-gram has been found to be bene-ficial to new students and theirparents/guardians.

    Beginning July 6 and runningevery Wednesday, Thursday andFriday until August 19, the NewStudent Orientation Program willbring new first-year students fromacross Ontario to Trent Universityto learn about course registration,campus life, Introductory SeminarWeek and housing services.Students will also have the oppor-tunity to tour the campus, resi-dential colleges and learn aboutfinancial aid opportunities.

    Researchers receive$779,830 from SSHRC

    As part of an $81.6 million invest-ment in research that will helpCanadians improve their qualityof life and enjoy a vigorous econ-omy, Trent University researcherswill receive $779,830 from theSocial Sciences and HumanitiesResearch Council of Canada(SSHRC).

    “The success of ourresearchers in the competition forthese SSHRC awards is a spectac-ular achievement and speakshighly of the quality of their pro-posals,” says Dr. James Parker,Trent University’s associate vice-president, research. “It builds sig-nificantly on Trent’s clearleadership among smaller univer-sities in research in the social sci-ences and humanities.”

    SSHRC is an independent federal government agency thatfunds university-based researchand graduate training throughnational peer-review competitions.

    Dr. Bondar Donates Photograph

    Trent University Chancellor Dr.Roberta Bondar presented theUniversity with a third panoramicphotograph titled Tundra Pondthis month.

    The image is the third in aseries of three arctic photographsintended for the University’s per-manent collection. Tundra Pondis in Aulavik National Park in theNorthwest Territory.

    Last year, Dr. Bondar donatedthe panoramic photographTanquary Fiord. The first image,Sirmilik Hoodoos Panorama, fromher series on Canada’s NationalParks in the last millennium, waspresented to the University by Dr.Bondar in 2003, after she wasappointed Chancellor of TrentUniversity.

    Trent Prof Wins Teaching Honour

    Trent University is pleased tocongratulate Professor DavidPage, who has been namedamong Ontario’s six most out-standing university teachers in aprovince-wide competition adju-dicated by the OntarioConfederation of UniversityFaculty Associations (OCUFA).

    Prof. Page has been a full-timemember of the Department ofAncient History & Classics atTrent since 1968 – his entire aca-demic career. He has taught morethan 30 different courses duringhis time at Trent, ranging fromthe 100 to 400 level, in Latin,Classical History, and ClassicalCivilization. He is also the 2003recipient of the Symons Awardfor Excellence in Teaching.

    PWAA presents awardsto Trent students

    To commemorate the 100thanniversary of the Women’s ArtAssociation Peterborough Branch,the past presidents of theAssociation awarded two prizes tograduating women at TrentUniversity. Lindsay Adamsreceived the prize for excellencein Women’s Studies; Hilary Wearfor excellence in CanadianStudies. Both young women hadexcellent academic records duringtheir honours degree studies, andmade important contributions tothe lives of their peers and intheir local communities.

    Representing the Women’s ArtAssociation at the presentationwere Janice Fountain, currentpresident, and past presidents,Margaret Fleming and DorothyHubbs. Professors Julia Harrison,Associate Professor, Anthropology,and Chair of Women’s Studies,and James Struthers, Chair ofCanadian Studies, expressed theirappreciation to the PWAA for thisopportunity to acknowledge theaccomplishments of two ofTrent’s highest achieving femalestudents.

    Donor Wall Unveiled

    Trent University unveiled thenewest addition to Peter GzowskiCollege and the First PeoplesHouse of Learning, EnweyingBuilding, on June 2.

    The donor wall formally recognizes those who gave to the Peter Gzowski College andBuilding Capacity fund-raisingcampaigns and incorporates sym-bols inspired by the PeterboroughPetroglyphs including the moose,turtle, thunderbird and heron.These are used symbolically withpermission from Curve Lake FirstNation. The donor wall wasdesigned and manufacturedlocally to complement the build-ing’s architecture and significance.There are 780 names listed.

    The unveiling of the donorwall was part of an evening in celebration of the completion ofthe Building Capacity and PeterGzowski College fund-raisingcampaigns. Collectively, donorshave given a total of $5.6 millionto support the construction of theChemical Sciences Building fea-turing the Water Quality Centre,Peter Gzowski College and theFirst Peoples House of Learning,as well as undergraduate andgraduate students and theirresearch.

    New Investments in Universities

    Trent University President andVice-Chancellor Bonnie Pattersoncommended the provincial gov-ernment on its most recent bud-get that will see $6.2 billioninvested in Ontario’s postsec-ondary education sector by 2010.

    “Premier McGuinty, MinisterSorbara and Minister Chambersare to be applauded for theircommitment to follow throughon the Rae Report and for deliver-ing significant new investmentsthat ensure students get access toquality and excellence inOntario’s universities,” saidPresident Patterson, after the bud-get was released last month. “Withthis budget, the government willenrich the quality experience forstudents and is taking a majorstep to enhance Ontario universi-ties’ competitiveness in Canada.”

    President Patterson stressedthat the university sector owes alarge debt of gratitude to theHonourable Mr. Bob Rae for his
