As you are undoubtea.ly aware, the Oovornmont of Bwitzerland waa most generous throughout the war years in receiv1nr; within its bo1'ders rafugeea from enemy and enomy-oooupted oountriea. The large numbal'S of persons who thus benefited from the lloapitaU:ty of the Swiss placed an 1noree.s1ng stl"ain on the ab1U.ty ot the Swiss to provide tood a.nd oloth1ng. supplies and. shelter faoil it 1es to ca.re for them. In acooroanoe with the announced policy of th1a Government to take all possible measures to re$oue and save the v1otima of enemy oppression oonsistent with the auooeasful proseou"" tlon of the war, the Swiss Government zraa assured. that add1t1onrl groups of refugees admitted into Switzerland would bo evacuated from that country as soon as possible.

As ,you are undoubtedl1 aware, the Government of Switzerland wa.e most generous throughout the war 1ears in reoeiving within its borders refugees from enemy and enemy-occupied countries. 'l'he large numbers of persons who thus benefited from the hoepi tali ty of the Swiss placed an increasing strain on the abilit;y of the S1d11 to provide food and clothing supplies and shelter fe.oilities to care for them. In accordance with the announced policy of this Government to te.lte all possible measures to rescue and save the victims of enemy oppression consistent with the successful prosecution of the war, the Swiss Government was ael3Ured that additional groups of refugees admitted into Switzerland would be evacuated from that countr1 as soon as possible.

Among others who found eafet1 on Swiss territory under thit plan are the 1, 670 Hungarian refugees who came from the concentration camp at Bergen Belsen. It is contemplated that thee!'I l'e:fugees will be removed from Sw1 tzerland at an early date and that they- will be taken· to a refugee camp in Southern Italy where they will be under -. the care of the United Rations Relief and B.eba.bilitation Administra­tion until such time as 1t becomes physically possible for tbem to be repatriated to their native land or to ellligrate to some other country.
