Scientists find “brake-override” proteins that enable development of some cancers

• CKs 1 and CKs 2 are two proteins known for being overexpressed in cancer.

•In the present study, the search team found that a CKs overexpression allows cancer cells to keep dividing.

Cancer CKs overexpression

a checkpoint nullifying effect RESEARCH DISCOVERY

Page 7: Folding: chromosomes, chromatine and cell cycle

When a mutation induces an uncontrolled and fast cell growth, the cell sends a break signal.

• The break signal, produced as a checkpoint response, stops cell cycle, and DNA’s replication won’t goes on.

BUT…!!

When it comes to cancer, it was found that:

Thanks to a CKs overexpression, the cancer cells will ignore the S-phase checkpoint response, pass over it and keep dividing.

OBSERVATION

In my opinion, every research that leads medicine to a better understanding of how cancer “operates” in the body, represents one more step to find a treatment.

Research links telomere length to emphysema risk.

The telomeres are the body’s own celullar clocks.

In this study, it was found a close relationship between telomere length and a increase susceptibility to develop emphysema.

Its length is determine :• Genetically• by Cell division (makes them shorter)

Page 12: Folding: chromosomes, chromatine and cell cycle

GETTING RESULTS

→ short telomere

→ long telomere

Developed emphysema

Did NOT develop lung disease

Page 13: Folding: chromosomes, chromatine and cell cycle

the results obtained in this research indicates that short telomeres plus cigarette smoke might

accelerates aging in the lung in some individuals.

Short telomere

lung damage

Cells can not longer divide

Increases risk to develop emphysema

Page 14: Folding: chromosomes, chromatine and cell cycle

OBSERVATION

in my opinion, it is important to keep searching about diseases that can be related to the telomere length, so it can be determine how the susceptibility to a disease can be affected and what can be done to improve health with age.

Medical Utility

Page 16: Folding: chromosomes, chromatine and cell cycle

MEDICAL UTILITY Thanks to this researches, medicine can advance, and

now with the discover of CKs role in cancer, there is a new target for cancer treatment.

Page 17: Folding: chromosomes, chromatine and cell cycle

MEDICAL UTILITY With the discovering of the link between short

telomere and emphysema, new research can establish methods to preserve some organs function with age.

Page 18: Folding: chromosomes, chromatine and cell cycle

MEDICAL UTILITY With all this research, medicine is getting close to

guarantee more efficient methods for curing cancer and preserve life with the age.
