SUPPORTED BY HOBSONS BAY CITY COUNCIL • OUTLETS NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE NEWPORT TRADERS ASSOCIATION nffc.org.au LILY AND KING Lily and King create music that sits somewhere between a captivat- ing 40’s nightclub routine and the raw, rambunctious spirit of New Orleans street buskers. With trombone, sweet and sassy vocals, toy piano, guitar, half a toy drum kit and an abundance of foot stomp- ing, a Lily and King gig is a truly wild experience. Newport Bowls Club, Saturday 8.00pm – 9.00pm Entry: Wristband (available at door) PETER BAYLOR GYPSY GUITAR WORKSHOP The workshop is open to guitar students on all levels. Peter will demonstrate the plectrum picking patterns that gives the music its own particular sound and how these patterns help the left hand form its soloing lines and chord voicings. Emphasis will be placed on the pompe style of rhythm. Come and Enjoy! Newport Scout Hall, Saturday 5.00pm – 6.00pm Entry: Wristband (available at Newport Bowls Club) THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER This charming work has a narrator, choir, soloists, strings and mice songs which you are invited to learn and sing. This is part operetta, part story telling incorporating folk tunes from Gloucestershire. The Substation, Saturday 3.00pm – 4.00pm Entry: Wristband (avail. at Newport Bowls Club) THE TIMBERS The Timbers’ thumping rhythms and big misty mountain melodies will cast you away to a sweaty, smoky, melting-pot of folk, roots and Celtic bushman brassy punk. They rollick and hammer their way through live gigs with abundant energy and have become festival favourites throughout Australia. Newport Bowls Club, Saturday 7.00pm – 8.00pm Entry: Wristband (available at door) BURNT LETTERS Burnt letters is all about lush vocal harmonies, heartbreaking lyrics and well-crafted songs. They’re a Melbourne-based four piece alt-country and blues outfit built from cello, guitar, mandolin, banjo, autoharp, harmonica, 12 string, and lots of vocals. Might sound like a big ole mess, but they’re tight as a pin. Newport Bowls Club, Saturday 2.00pm – 3.00pm Entry: Wristband (available at door) HARRY BROWN Harry Brown is an up and coming singer-songwriter forging his own brand of heartfelt acoustic folk. Currently based in Melbourne, Australia, he’s recently supported Clare Bowditch and is currently touring his new EP. Harry will be bringing you his original tunes with his full band. Newport Bowls Club, Saturday 9.00pm – 10.00pm Entry: Wristband (available at door) TALES FROM THE FLYWAY Violinist Sarah Depasquale and storyteller Jackie Kerin take you on a journey following the path of migratory birds from Hobsons Bay to Siberia. Stories from Indonesia, Thailand and the Arctic Tundra are woven together with Vivaldi, Bach, Massenet and pieces Sarah has composed especially. The Substation, Saturday 2.00pm – 3.00pm Entry: Wristband (available at Newport Bowls Club) JEFF TYNAN Jeff Tynan is a Melbourne independent singer-songwriter/multi-instru- mentalist. His self-produced debut EP ‘Revolving’ blends deep earthy roots with modern indie-folk/rock & features raw sounds of wood & strings, weaving between passionate lyrics of self-growth & social awareness. Newport Bowls Club, Sunday 4.00pm – 5.00pm Entry: Wristband (available at door) nffc.org.au Welcome to the 9th Newport Folk Festival. We invite you to ‘Come and Play’ with us and enjoy the wide range of delights that are included within the festival. The Program is well represented by members of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club who have been honing their skills throughout the year. The Tallboys, Paisley and Plaid, The Ukulele Dolls, Belle Stewart and The Cat’s Pyjamas are just a few of the locals who will be performing. Guests of the festival range from Appalachian Heaven String Band (US folk), Ultrafox (gypsy swing), The Harmaniax with their unique Cajun zydeco, the rambunctious Lily and King (trombone and toy piano?) to the high energy Folk of our old mates The Timbers. The Workshop Program invites you to come and sing, dance, juggle, bake and of course to play (with or without musical instruments!). Market Street will be closed for traffic & will host a diverse line-up of entertainment for all ages, including Line Dancing, the experimental instruments of HAPI SOUNDS, The Installation Series, Street juggling, Gypsy Dancing & there’s chalk & plenty of road surface for everyone to use! The feature concert of the Festival ‘Folk to Classical’ will be held at The Mechanics Institute in Williamstown. It will certainly surprise and delight in equal measure with fiddles, trumpets, trios, ensembles, grand piano and even some community singing. The Newport Festival Choir (40 singers) will add some icing to a very rich cultural cake. Book early as strictly limited seating! We would love to see you in the first weekend in July Come and Play!
