a cathedral, and even Proust, on the way!

AnetDogs chasing deer in a day’s hunting? You are of course in Diane de Poitiers territory- a huntingfanatic. The best architects of the era worked onAnet Castle, a castle which bears witness to its pastsplendour, despite being damaged during the

    Revolution.

DreuxPerched on a hill overlooking the town, the neo-gothic royal chapel has protected the burial groundsof Orléans since Louis-Philippe. Go inside to admirethe stained glass and carved statues. Not only doesDreux’s history merit the detour so does itsatmosphere - in December the “Festival desFlambarts” raises the temperature with its carnivalstyle parade and richly coloured street entertainment.

M aintenonThis old feudal castle was transformed in the 17thcentury. Its floors were designed by Lenôtre, it has a17th century aqueduct and golf course alongside thegrounds. Such a jewel was needed to satisfy LouisXIV’s future mistress better known as Madame deMaintenon. Crossing the grounds, the aqueduct’sarches are reminders of the monumental project thatwas supposed to join the waters of the Eure nearMarly and Versailles Castle.

P ierresColours, odours and tastes are intertwined in Clos deBois Richeux Gardens. A very special botanicalheritage composed of herb gardens with medicinalplants, aromatic inner courtyards, and vegetable

gardens of very old varieties. Enough to rejuvenatemedieval spirituality…

AuneauWhether they mew or growl the cats of Auneauleap around in a natural habitat. You can observevery rare species from observation points along themagnificent pathway, in the heart of the castle’sgrounds.

C hartresThe cathedral is a masterpiece and listed UNESCOheritage site. The spires of this 12th and 13th centurygem can be seen across the “beauceronne”countryside. The International Centre of StainedGlass Windows increases the influence of the art of

stained glass through training courses andexhibitions. The School of Agriculture houses thelargest French museum dedicated to agriculture in anengine shed built in 1905. There are more than 100exceptional agriculture machines on show, live, interactive temporary exhibitions and a multimediaarea. It took Raymond Isidore 33 years to decorateand cover his home with coloured mosaics, includingall of the furniture! The Maison Picassiette merits its listed buildingstatus.

I lliers-CombrayGo in search of lost time “à la recherche du tempsperdu” in Illiers-Combray. Here you will find Aunt

Léonie’s home, the Marcel Proust Museum and thecharming Pré Catelan garden created by theauthor’s uncle that became Swann’s Park inProust’s novel. Immerse yourself in the pastoral, nostalgic ambience of one of France’s most famouswriters.

N ogent-le- RotrouSt Jean Stately Home and Perche Museum, 1000years old, rises above the Huisne valley. If testimonies from the past fascinate, the richhistory of Perche and the stately home can befoundin a converted museum in the heart of its oldstone walls. One ofthe “most beautiful detours de France”,Nogent-le-Rotrou merits a stop.

P ercheThe Natural Regional Park of Perche, lies between Beauceand Normandy. Ideal for long walks through a landscape of small valleys and farmland, criss-crossed by hedges andtrees. A rich rural architecture built from a variety of naturalmaterials that produce an amazing palette of coloursenhances the façades of the manor houses and churches, farms and abbeys. From nature’s perspective, you will bespoilt as you wind your way from one green valley toanother and discover a countryside where the horse is king. And to learn more, visit the Park’s Visitors’ Centre, situatedin Nocé in the neighbouring region.

Valley. It is a rare example of a château whose gardens arein the same s ty le as i t s ou ter wal l s .The gardens themselves were re-designed at thebeginning of the twentieth century, and are truly a wonderto behold. They are a floral expression of love and music, interlinking the water gardens and vegetable gardenswhich bring colour and joy to those who come to seethem throughout the year.

L a RicheThe spirit of Ronsard is almost tangible amidst theremains of the St Cosme Priory, which lay within thewalls of eight gardens of roses and irises. He was theprior here until his death in 1565, when he was

When the St Gatien Cathedral is lit upat night, you can see the four centuries of architecture thatwent into its construction. Even more beautifully, theeighteenth century stained glass bursts into life. The streetsRue Colbert, Rue Briçonnet and Rue de Grand Marché arelined with gorgeous half-timbered houses. The wood panelledstyle is also used in the buildings around the historic centre of Tours, the Plumereau Square. Tours is also home to theworld’s onlyGuild Museum, which brings together some of the

greatest pieces of works produced by guilds throughout theages.

C hançayThe Valmer Château is a haven for horticulture buffs.Built in 1640 in a vineyard in Vouvray, by an advisorto Louis XIII, the château has a park covering 40acres, dotted with columns and terraced Italiangardens. While you’re in thearea, why not look up Francois I’s protegé Leonardoda Vinci, who spent his last years in the Clos LucéChateau.      Azay-le- RideauThis château was built in the sixteenth century, on anislet in the Indre River. The building comes to life duringthe Azay-le-Rideau show. During high season, visitorscan see the building in a totally new light on this night-time tour. A few minutes down the road is the MauriceDufresne museum, which shows off almost 3000different kinds of historic machinery, such as old cars, weapons and agricultural tools - all lovingly restored.

The theme of restoration continues in the Goupillièrestroglodyte valley, which proves that limestone wasn’tused just for the ornate exteriors of châteaux. Long ago, people used to live in troglodyte farms set into thehillside, which doubled up as a Middle Ages subterraneanrefuge.

V illaines-les- RochersBasketwork has been central to life in Villaines-les-Rochers for a long time. Indeed, Balzac referred to it in hiswork, knowing as he did the importance of the craft tothe region. Today, they produce a third of all basketworkproduction in France, and visitors can watch the wicker-weavers at work. The Wicker and Basketwork museumwas essential to tell the story of this craft.

SachéNow here is a town of letters! Saché was Balzac’spreferred residence, far from the madding crowds of Paris. Where else could the author have drawn inspirationfor “Lis of the Valley”, than the sixteenth century manorwhere he spent so much time, without being able to buyit. In the museum, much of the décor remainsunchanged, and you can find original manuscripts of Balzac’s work. Drift into the writer’s world, and explorewhere some of the finest French literature was written.

C éré-la- RondeTally-ho! Montpoupon Château, and the VeneurMuseum, which lies within it, serves as a quiet reminderthat the stag hunting teams from these parts werereputed to be the best around. The museum gives aninsight into the lifestyle of the hunting gentry with huntingartefacts, a renovated hunting lodge, and various relatedarts and crafts.

L ochesThe dungeon of this château was used as a prison rightup until 1926. The 36-metre climb to its summit isbreathless work, but the view from the top is over thebeautiful buildings which make up the Chancery. TheChancery houses a permanent exhibition, “Town of Artand History”. An absolute must when visiting Loches, one of the “Most beautiful Detours of France” at thefoot of the dungeon lies a secret garden, which managesto mix functionality with beauty, with its aromatic plantsand vegetable patches. In Vignemont, you can findTroglodyte houses carved out of rock. There are over600 metres of tunnels to walk through. The limestonethat was excavated was also used in the constructionof many of the monuments in the region.

V alençayValençay, one of the “Most beautiful Detours of France”is perched neatly on the sloping hillside. Its sixteenthcentury château is derived from Chambord’s Château, and was a gift from Napoleon to Talleyrand. Talleyrand’sspirit soaks through its very walls. Visitors are invited tospend “a day with the Prince of Talleyrand”, following himthrough his spectacular culinary performance through tothe Duels of the Duchesse: all acted out by costumed

actors. The park has a children’s château, andNapoleon’s Grand Maze, in which the idea is to solveclues based on Napoleon, and learn all about him whilsthaving fun! Moving on to another time completely thereis the Car Museum, which holds over 60 vehicles, including plenty of bikes, not to mention an impressivecollection of posters and signposts all around what is avery modern and interactive place to visit.
