M iamians consider themselves neither northern nor southern As the local saying

goes ldquoThe best thing about Miami is that itrsquos so close to the United Statesrdquo It straddles the US and the Caribbean its airports and seaports are the perfect trans-shipment point between north and south east and west

Miami which has always had a significant immigrant population became a southern town until the influx of Cuban business owners professionals and intellectuals who poured

into Miami-Dade after Fidel Castro took over Cuba in 1959 and paved the way for successive waves of political and economic refugees

Miami-Dade says one business leader became a place where entrepreneurs ideas innovative minds and people with money from multiple countries converge

Today Miami is probably best understood by its diversity mdash the county encompasses Sunny Isles Beachrsquos wall of

condo towers and resorts along the Atlantic Ocean Hialeahrsquos warehouses and industrial spaces Miami Beachrsquos Art Deco District downtown Miamirsquos glitteringly dense high-rises Coral Gablesrsquo sprawling homes and Homesteadrsquos farms and nurseries

Miami-Dade has a greater portion of foreign-born residents than any other county

or metro area in the US Itrsquos a Latin American quilt with people from every nation in South Central and North America The population also includes large groups from the Caribbean the United Kingdom Israel France Spain Russia and more mdash some

permanent residents some regular visitors (for business or for pleasure) Cultures however donrsquot blend together any more than accents or languages do County leaders sometimes refer to the diversity as a ldquomosaicrdquo Immigrants add their own piece to the large picture

Companies say the countyrsquos diversity of people leads to diversity of thought Talk to local business leaders and the phrase that keeps coming up is ldquocultural collisionsrdquo mdash meant in a positive way ldquoDiversity is (Miamirsquos) greatest strengthrdquo says Stephen Owens president of Swire Properties ldquoWe say all the time in our company lsquocultural collisionrsquo And the benefits are fantastic Everyone has a different view and a different way of approaching and solving problemsrdquo

The county faces plenty of challenges Its rapid growth and urbanization have led to traffic congestion and gridlock Far too many jobs are in low-paying service positions And like many other large metro areas prosperity and growth have bypassed large portions of the population The middle class is shrinking the gap between rich and poor is growing and economic mobility is low

Business education and government leaders are focused on boosting wages in the hospitality and tourism industry along with expanding industries with higher-paying jobs such as aviation architecture engineering fashion design media production information technology international banking and finance life sciences and health care and tradelogistics

The countyrsquos public school system colleges and universities are trying to work closely with industry to train workers for the right jobs County government is supporting mass transit efforts business incubators and other initiatives The countyrsquos diversity they believe will help it move forward says Jaret Davis chairman of the countyrsquos economic development partnership the Beacon Council and co-managing shareholder of law firm Greenberg Traurigrsquos Miami office As he says ldquoWhenever you get cultural collisions innovation comes outrdquo

Law firm Greenberg Traurig with more than 600 people at its offices there is one of Miamirsquos largest private-sector employers

Swire Propertiesrsquo Brickell City Centre includes two condo towers two office buildings an EAST Miami hotel (the first outside Asia) and an outdoor shopping area One condo tower an office building and the hotel opened earlier this year and the shopping area will open this fall

Can Miami-Dade turn one of the highest rates of entrepreneurship in the country into a true innovation ecosystem Organizations from the Beacon Council and Miami-Dade County to the Miami Downtown Development Authority the John S and James L Knight Foundation and a slew of incubatorsaccelerators are working on that mission

Itrsquos a challenge There is a shortage of both venture capital funding and new graduates in tech-related fields in the area Therersquos not an ecosystem of established tech companies with experienced entrepreneurs who can fund startups with stock option payouts But many say those two obstacles will be easier to overcome than geography Compared to other hubs of innovation Miami-Dadersquos is spread out with co-working spaces accelerators incubators and innovative companies from one end of the county to the other

Despite these obstacles the non-profit Knight Foundation decided in 2013 to invest heavily in creating an innovation ecosystem in Miami-Dade To date it has committed more than $20 million to 180 programs

One the Knight Foundationrsquos biggest investments was helping to launch eMerge Americas which has become the regionrsquos signature technology and entrepreneurship conference Its $151-million three-year grant along with $1 million in seed money from Miami-Dade County have helped eMerge grow from 6000 attendees in 2014 to 13000 attendees from more than 400 companies in 2016

The efforts appear to be paying off Between 2012 and 2014 the county saw a 24 increase in technology jobs compared to a 9 increase nationally Microsoft launched its first US Innovation Center in Miami and the White House named Miami-Dade a TechHire community part of an initiative to train people for technology jobs And the Kauffman

Business Assets Foundation ranked the area No 2 metropolitan area in the nation for entrepreneurship

Innovation Economy Components Venture Hive ndash The granddaddy of

Miamirsquos accelerators and incubators founded with financial support from the Miami Downtown Development Authority supports high-growth technology companies at all stages and companies from 40 nations have applied to the program

Endeavor Miami ndash This non-profit helps a selected group of high-impact entrepreneurs around the world scale up with services mentoring and funding Miami is its first US location

The Launch Pad at University of Miami ndash The program provides entrepreneurial resources for students and alumni
