“What Would It Take . . . ?”

In Romans 1:4, we are told, “…Jesus was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection of the dead.” Thus, it was Jesus resurrection which proved to His disciples that He truly was the Son of God. Because of this, they were willing to endure imprisonment (Acts 4:1-3), floggings (Acts 5:40-42), and even mar tyrdom (Acts 7:54-60). Yet in spite of persecution, these believers continued to remain firm in their convictions that Jesus is the Son of God. (Had this been a hoax, do you think they would have suffered all these things for a known lie??!)

So, what would it take convince you that Jesus is the Son of God?

That He arrives here in a supernatural way? Did that! (Luke 1:26-38; 2:1-20)

That throughout His life He remains sinless and pure? Ditto! (Hebrews 4:14; 1 Peter 2:22)

That He has power over the forces of nature? Easy-peazy! (Matthew 8:23-27)

That He cures incurable conditions? Constantly! (Mark 5:25-29; John 5:5-9; 9:1-7, 32)

That He has power over spiritual beings? Daily! (Mark 1:23-26, 34; 3:11-12)

That His teachings are not of this world? All the time! (Matthew 22:46; John 3:11-13)

That He still creates whatever He desired? Sure! (Matthew 15:32-38; John 6:5-13)

That He appears to hundreds of people after His resurrection? Yep! (1 Corinthians 15:6)

Or . . . (would something more be required to convince you of who He is?!)

God truly wants us to be with Him for all eternity. We lost the intimacy He desired because of the sin in the Garden. Yet if we were to be honest with our-selves, we would recognize our own sins are greater and far more grave than the “eating of a piece of fruit”! No matter the severity or the amount of our sins, just one is all that is required to keep us out of heaven, (see Romans 6:23a).

But it is for precisely this reason that Jesus died for our sins and was raised for our justification, (see Romans 4:25). God is so much greater than we could ever imagine!!! The power of Jesus resurrection is the power that gives us the courage to live a radically-saved, sold out for Jesus Christian life!

Postmodernism in Our Culture and Religion

Professor Allan Bloom made the following observation and quote in his book The Closing of the American Mind: “There is one thing a professor can be absolutely certain of: almost every student entering the university believes, or says he believes, that truth is relative” (Bloom, 25). Professor Bloom goes so far as to say that this “is the virtue, the only virtue, which all primary education for more than fifty years has dedicated itself to inculcating” (Bloom, 26). Therefore, students are being taught more and more that truth is relative and that there is NO SUCH THING as ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

In his helpful study entitled: Adrift: Postmodernism in the Church, Phil Sanders notes that 72% of young Americans say they do not believe in absolute truth. “They think truth is relative, varying with time and circumstance” (Sanders, 57). This aspect of postmodernism has created or contributed to doctrinal problems in the brotherhood. Postmodernism places an emphasis on what people do rather than what they believe. Consequently, there is much emphasis on doing good things – being kind, being generous, being good neighbors, helping others, all of which is worthy in itself – but there often is a corresponding lack of emphasis on doctrine – what people should believe, holding to right teaching, and understanding the great themes of the gospel. Under postmodernism influence, doctrinal sermons, first principle teaching, and an emphasis on believing truth and not error, often fall by the wayside. Balanced teaching involves stressing right beliefs and convictions along with right living and conduct.

It is therefore easy for those of us who do believe in absolute truth to point to Jesus’s words in John 8:32, John 14:6, John 16:13 to refute this dangerous ideology. Postmodernism is just a tool in Satan’s arsenal to distract God’s people and cause division and dissension in His family.

God’s Word will always be the last word! Donnie Landrum

Lunch will be furnished on Sunday, May 19th (following morning Bible classes) for all the ones that signed up for our new “visitation program.” If you did not sign up and still want to be a
