The Shaping of the Faith – Gentile/Jewish Impact on ChristianitySeminar Leader: Dick Atkins (Room 205)
This seminar examines the influence on Chris anity by Near Eastern cultures (Babylonian,
Egyp an, Canaanite, Samaritan, Persian, Greek, and Roman). For example, the Magi werePersian priests of Zoroaster (not kings), who witnessed the birth of the Jewish Messiah. TheGreek underworld, Tartarus, was equivalent to the Jewish Gehenna. The Babylonian lovegoddess, Ishtar, gave her name to Esther. The Canaanite father god, El, became Elohim, God ofgods. And the Roman chief deity, Jupiter (Jovis-pater) was equivalent to the Jewish Deity, i.e.,Jovis was Jehovah. Also, the evil Egyp an god, Set, became Satan. Furthermore, the period ofthe Babylonian Exile and the 400 “silent years” between the Testaments, which shaped theJewish society of Jesus’ day are of major importance. All of these elements were significant insetting up “the fullness of time” for the appearance of the new Christian Faith. In the well-rounded Christian life - beyond Bible study - there is a need for DEPTH: Doctrine,Ethics, Polity, Theology, History.

CBF field personnel help Macedoniansrealize the change in themselves throughcow farming. A cow is a cow is a cow …
unless it’s more than a cow. At Aya Farmin rural Macedonia, a cow is never just acow. Sometimes a cow is a life-changingopportunity. Or a way out ofpoverty. Sometimes it’s a community’sfuture. Or a celebration of God’screation and our role in sustaining it.
Aya Farm is a “cowbank” started in partby Cooperative Baptist Fellowship fieldpersonnel Alicia & Jeff Lee, now in their seventh year in Skopje, the capital ofMacedonia, a small country on the Balkan Peninsula in south-central Europe.
"A cow bank provides a 'loan' of a cow to a local farmer to help them with theirherd, their family, and their neighbors. We give them small cows that will takeabout a year to grow up before they’re ready to milk. With the first calf born tothat cow, the farmer repays the loan. The new calf is given to another farmerallowing the ministry of Aya Farm to grow and more families to prosper.
Life is simple but hard in this former republic of CommunistYugoslavia. Unemployment is high (27 percent) and per capita income modest (US$14,000).Though poverty is widespread, it is even worse among ethnic Albanians, who havebeen a target of persecution by ethnic Macedonians for decades. Aya Farm is inZherovanje, a predominantly Albanian community. Albanians tend to be on themargins, Alicia said.
CBF's impact in Macedonia has always been around transformationaldevelopment, whether it be in education and farming, and the lives of children orother marginalized people groups.
In addition to the cow bank, the Lees are helping build a foster home for needychildren, assisting a food bank to expand from a small apartment to a largewarehouse, helping the Poraka Day-Care center in Volcovo to educate and providedaily care for 50 special need adults.
