Definition of Food SecurityThe World Food Summit in 1996 defined food security as a situation when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.

At the World Summit of Food Security of 2009, this definition was confirmed and the concept was extended and specified by adding that the four pillars of food security are availability, access, utilization, and stability; it was emphasized that the nutritional dimension is integral to the concept .

Key priorities for policy should include not only overall poverty reduction and ensuring food sufficiency but also focus on reducing economic inequalities and comprehensive disaster prevention strategies.
