A message from the M.D.It seems hard to believe that over 55 years ago (May 1964) the very first Monarch watersoftener was sold. How a water softener works A water softener works by passing the incominghard water through a sealed container called aresin vessel, which contains literally thousands oflittle ion exchange resin beads.These beads attract and retain any hardness in thewater i.e. scale and scum, that causes so muchdamage to your system.When these beads become saturated withhardness, they need cleaning and regenerating forcontinued use. This is done by rinsing them with aweak solution of brine (salt and water). The brine together with the previously collectedhardness is then automatically flushed down thedrain. This process takes place automatically asdetermined by the softener, with all that has to bedone is ensure the softener is kept full of tabletsalt. In conclusion therefore, salt does not soften thewater. The resin cleans/softens the water andwhen required the brine cleans the resin. Duringthe cleaning of the resin, the previously collectedscale and scum is discharged automatically downthe drain together with the brine. At no time does the brine enter the water supply.

Steam applications It is important to understand that any sodium in thewater is retained within the boiler when steam iscreated and does not enter the main chamber orfood. This sodium is then sent to drain on blow down.

Did you know?

• Every UK gallon has 4.546 litres, but a US gallon only has 3.785 litres.

• 1psi water pressure is generated by approx. 2' in height (feet head). Therefore a water tank 30' above the ground, generates 15psi, and 15psi is approx. 1 bar in water pressure.

• 1 degree Clark (water hardness measurement) is approx. 14.3ppm (parts per million); and ppm and mg/l (milligrams per litre) are the same measurement.

• In every litre there is 1000 millilitres (ml), which is the same as 0.22 UK gallons, which is actually 1.76 pints.

CBT - How it worksWater contains two different typesof hardness ions, but only onecauses scale. This is called acalcium ion.The scale causing calcium ion(dissolved limescale) passesthrough a bed of food gradeceramic beads within the unit, andis transformed into a non-scalecausing calcium crystal (softscale). This process is calledNucleation Assisted Crystallizationor NAC in short. The crystalsattach themselves to the beads.When they reach a certain size,they release themselves from thebeads back into the water, wherethe majority adhere themselves tothe Post Filter (optional).As a result of this physical change(permanent), hard scale no longerhas the possibility of forming onsurfaces including heating coilsand elements, fittings, or the insideof pipes etc. The water becomesboth non-scale forming and alsodescaling, offering many benefitsto the application in itsperformance.

Crystals, a by-product ofScaleouts operation, can inareas with high levels ofwater hardness, showthemselves after water hasevaporated. In aestheticapplications, we recommendthey are simply wiped awaybefore the majority areallowed to accumulate.Additionally, Monarchs unique CBT ensures pHstability and corrosion control in all types of water.
