The challenges associated with feeding children, seniors and families during hard times would be insurmountable if it were not for the energy of volunteers and the generosity of those who are able to give both food and dollars to the important work of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

There are trucks to fuel and service, facilities to maintain, utilities to pay, and programs to administer. We felt the pinch of the shrinking dollar, but even more of a demand was in the increasing numbers of those who turn for help to the Foodbank and to the community food pantries the Foodbank serves.

Most of us never experienced the bread lines and soup kitchens of the Great Depression, though our parents and grandparents have told us how Americans came together to help one another in that desperate time. Our nation survived because of that caring and shared responsibility for each other.

We see that spirit here at the Foodbank. This year, more than 5,000 volunteers sorted food donations, packed BackPacks for school children, worked at the region’s food pantries and even staged food collection drives and fundraising events. Their e orts helped us meet our goals of carrying out the Foodbank’s mission. To sustain that mission, we were blessed with food and funds from a generous community. This annual report will describe those e orts. The Foodbank sta and board take seriously the stewardship of those gifts we receive – gifts

intended by you, our donors, to e ciently support our mission of leading the e ort to eliminate hunger in our community. When the needs are so great in a year such as 2012, we struggle like every family in the community to stretch the dollars while streamlining our e orts. To that end, this annual report will show you how our programs are doing and how we are improving them. Even better, we’ll tell you about new projects we’re working on to better meet the needs of people who are hungry in our community.

We’d like to enlist your support even more by passing this report along to a friend after you have read it. You are our greatest asset. You can help us share our message to all families in the region.

In closing, we invite you to visit our warehouse and distribution center, our base of operations. We would be pleased and honored to show you the heart of the Foodbank. And we welcome your ideas and e orts to help us continue to make our Foodbank even better.

Sincerely,

Joanne E. Batson Kenneth J. ThomasCEO President, Board of Directors

AND HOW THEY WORK

Page 7: Foodbank...Warehouse Distribution Program: This program includes all food and grocery products from food drives, purchases, and donations from manufacturers and supermarkets. This

Warehouse Distribution Program: This program includes all food and grocery products from food drives, purchases, and donations from manufacturers and supermarkets. This is the heart of the Foodbank – where millions of pounds of food are sorted, boxed, and delivered to 400 Partner Agencies and Programs.

USDA Commodities: The Foodbank is a Commonwealth of Virginia contractor for the distribution of USDA commodities to designated agencies. This source of food includes quality meats, canned and packaged fruits and vegetables, rice, beans, pasta and peanut butter.

Food Rescue Program: This is an initiative to collect prepared and perishable food from 150 area grocery stores, restaurants, caterers and discount retailers to distribute immediately to those who are hungry. Last year, the Foodbank collected more than 5.5 million pounds through this program.

Mobile Pantry Program: This system of distribution provides food to our neediest communities, while coordinating with our partner agencies and other social service organizations to determine delivery locations. During this past scal year, this program provided 902,544 pounds of food to individuals who either could not travel to an agency or their local agency was at capacity.

Kids Cafe®: This national after-school program was created by Feeding America™ and is administered locally by your Foodbank. It is a place where children ages 4 through 18 can go to receive free, nutritious evening meals in a safe, supportive environment. Sites operate in convenient locations in low-income neighborhoods where participating children can walk or bicycle to after school. In this past scal year 2012, we served almost 236,000 nutritionally balanced meals and over 61,500 snacks to 2,400 youths at 24 di erent sites through this program.

BackPack Program: This national program distributes nutritious food to children at the end of the school day, before weekends, and/or school breaks. Students are identi ed by school personnel as being food insecure by a variety of criteria. More than 87,000 children in the Foodbank’s area are eligible to receive free or reduced-price school breakfasts and lunches – a reliable indicator that hunger and food insecurity regularly threaten their respective lives. At present, the Foodbank serves 49 elementary schools in our area, including the Eastern Shore. During this past scal year 2012, we distributed over 240,000 meals (more than 48,000 bags) through this program.

Community Gardens: The Foodbank promotes community gardens, a terri c source of vitamins and an alternative to processed foods. The Foodbank works with individuals and groups to plan, plant, care for and harvest a garden that is shared by everyone who participates.

Additionally, the Foodbank began a Nutrition Education Program pilot that was conducted at 2 Boys & Girls Clubs’ Summer Feeding Programs in Exmore and Virginia Beach this past summer. The Program goal was to educate children about nutrition and empower them to make healthy food choices. Through weekly hour long workshops full of hands on activities, both sites grew gardens that were used to make pizzas at the end of the Program. They learned how to plant and tend a garden, how plants grow, the food groups, why we need vitamins and minerals, composting, weeding, how to sprout seeds, and how to make smoothies. They have also had plant part taste tests and a variety of guest speakers.

Plant-A-Row for the Hungry Program: Local gardeners and farmers are encouraged to plant an extra row of produce and contribute that part of their harvest to the Foodbank and its member agencies.

Justine’s Clothes Bank and Tasley Thrift Store: The Foodbank clothes bank distributes vouchers to purchase new shoes. Our branch location on the Eastern Shore also operates a thrift store to meet the needs of the area’s struggling residents and to generate modest income for the Foodbank.

“I Get Much More Than I Give”By Elaine Roberts

I had been to the Foodbank many times as a volunteer for committee meetings but never when the food was being distributed. As I came around the corner from where I had parked, I was startled by the long line of people in our community waiting to get needed food. The air was chilly, the line mostly quiet, somber faces patiently waiting their turn…wheelchairs, canes, walkers, old, young, men, women and babies. I wondered when was their last meal, what was their last meal, and who was waiting at home for the food they would bring through the door. How far had they traveled, how much food would they get and would it be enough were questions circling in my head as I entered the Foodbank. I had already gulped my emotions down as deeply as I could. I was here to learn from those on the front lines of ghting hunger…the volunteers of the Foodbank. Here are their stories:

The words of the volunteers who give their time at the Foodbank say it best.

CARING VOLUNTEERS

Page 13: Foodbank...Warehouse Distribution Program: This program includes all food and grocery products from food drives, purchases, and donations from manufacturers and supermarkets. This

“…it was my second volunteer shift and I had a lady that was on edge…she was stressed and sad. She really needed the Foodbank’s help. As I was lling out her application…she began to cry. I reached out my hand to hers and I held it as she wept. I knew then that what I was doing was so much more than just lling out a piece of paper. I realized that I had the opportunity to connect with people in my community and show them that I genuinely care.”

Chelsea Wendell, Flight Attendant for Express Jet

Airlines, Foodbank Volunteer for 5 months

“When they come for the rst time they are not sure if they will be helped. I see a change from despair to hope when they realize they are not going to be turned away. There are times when they might not have any food at home and they come. They know we’re here and I’m glad we’re here.”

Joan became friends with a customer who decided she wanted to volunteer too. Walking 4-5 blocks to get to the Foodbank, she came to help each week until she passed away. “One Friday she was here helping and by the next Friday she had died. We were close in age and both shared our love of the Lord. We just had di erent life circumstances.”

Joan McRae, Retired Pre-Kindergarten Teacher, Foodbank

Volunteer for 12 years

“I got started volunteering here at the food bank a few years ago through an event sponsored by my company. I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Amy Larch, Bank of America, Foodbank Volunteer 4 ½ years

“I decided to volunteer at the Foodbank after looking at their 990. They are one of the best managed nonpro ts in Hampton Roads. A lot of times I’m the only man at the

processing table and when a male customer comes in, particularly an older male, they want to talk to another male. They might be a little embarrassed because they are here for help. They grew up in a di erent era. Some make $700-800 a month from Social Security and they don’t have any other source of income. When you see them, you hope you won’t be that way yourself, but you just don’t know. ”Mark Morehouse, Accountant for

Navy Military Sealift Command, Norfolk, Foodbank Volunteer for

5 years

“These people know that here they are individuals, not a number, and that starts at the front door. They know that I’m one of them so I think that helps. I know how it feels to stand in the line. I wasn’t comfortable getting something for nothing, so I signed up to be a volunteer.”

Pat Bitter, Lost job Sept.1, 2008, Foodbank Volunteer

for 4 ½ years

There are more than 5,300 volunteers who have donated more than 35,000 hours in 2012 at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore to ght hunger. There are many more stories that I could share, but I will end with the words of one more volunteer, Charlene Greiner, retired Special Education Supervisor.

“I can’t imagine many things worse than being hungry or not knowing how I would feed my family. I have come to realize that poverty goes way beyond “uncomfortable.” Although one box a month is a Band-Aid, it is a desperately needed Band-Aid….These clients frequently act as if I have helped them when in reality they have helped me more.”

(This article is a collection of quotes/stories from the volunteers of FSEVA; the use of the words clients and customers refer to the individuals served by FSEVA.)

Jim Miller is a true steward of the Fishes and Loaves Ministry’s food pantry at Ocean View Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. The 74-year-old retiree has applied his computer pro ciency to every facet of the volunteer job that has become a second career.

Since the Fishes and Loaves Ministry became a partner agency of the Foodbank in 1998, Jim and his small but dedicated band of volunteers have kept the church pantry running smoothly, serving a client list that has grown from 30 households to more than 600.

The sophisticated database that Jim created helps them ensure that enough food is ordered monthly from the Foodbank and records are constantly updated to keep track of the families and individuals who are served each month. “It’s very important that we can provide this valuable supplement of food to these households,” he said. “So we have to know who needs food and what we can count on from the

Foodbank. It’s been especially hard this year because the donations are down everywhere. Where we used to be able to contribute multiple bags of staples to each client, now we can distribute only about half as much as a few years ago.”

Jim picks up additional food donations from the Kroger store in nearby Wards Corner (a Foodbank partner), and a number of organizations and churches provide both nutritional food and nancial support to keep the Fishes and Loaves shelves stocked.

When clients come to the pantry, they receive a bag of staples prepared by volunteers – usually canned goods, frozen items, peanut butter and other packaged foods. Then they can “shop” for additional foods, including salads and fresh vegetables when available. Once in a while there will be treats such as cake, breads or cupcakes, which especially please the children. Volunteers give each client a printed calendar to remind them of the dates

the ministry is open so they can return the following month.

Two or three times a month, Jim and his volunteers (including his adult daughter Diane Paluzzi), take prepared bags of supplementary groceries to several senior residency complexes in the Wards Corner area of Norfolk. “Some of the seniors are shut-ins, so what we take them is especially important to their budgets,” Jim said. “They are so appreciative.”

The Fishes and Loaves Ministry has seen a change in the faces of families and individuals they help. “We nd more multi-generational households and more clients who have su ered from job loss,” Jim said. “Some have even told me that they don’t come every month so there will be more for others.”

Jim’s wish list is simple: More donations all year long and not just at holidays; and, of course, more volunteers.

One of the most promising new projects of 2012 involves growing produce at the Foodbank’s Community Garden, located at the Eastern Shore Branch, to help feed hungry families in that community. The project, which consists of planting, cultivating and harvesting raised beds and rows of produce, also provides an educational element with the help of local farmers and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The program is supported by a grant from Bank of America which enables the purchase of seeds, seedlings, tools and fertilizers.

Last spring, the community garden became the pet project of the Foodbank’s two Americorps VISTA volunteers, Elise Springuel and Jeni Savage, who worked with the Foodbank sta to coordinate volunteers planting seeds and

seedlings in raised garden beds and rows prepared by volunteer and former project manager Alan Hall, along with members of the Onancock Elks Lodge. Many local businesses provided gardening supplies and services at reduced rates. The Virginia Tech team helped with soil testing, planting and installation of an irrigation system.

The garden ourished with a large variety of vegetables and melons, and in July, the harvest began with support from YouthWorks Volunteers. By the end of the spring/summer growing season, more than 200 pounds of produce had been harvested and distributed to households served by the Eastern Shore Branch, and plans were made for planting the fall/winter garden.

Eastern Shore branch manager Charmin Horton says the garden is truly a community project that

has a very bright future. In January, construction will begin on an enclosed garden house -- called a hoop house because of its shape and construction -- where future seedlings will be started and educational programs held. Funds for this hoop house are provided as part of the Bank of America grant, and the Eastern Shore Conservation and Development Council will help maintain the project.

Horton says the project should help triple the garden output and help local families and even school children learn about the economic value of growing your own produce. “We want to reach out to elementary school children to show them the connection between growing their own vegetables and having a healthy lifestyle,” she said.

She added that their rst full year of the garden project served as trial and error: “We learned what works and what doesn’t.”

Listed are monetary donors who have made gifts of $1,000 or more to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. Their generosity enables us to distribute millions of pounds of nutritious food annually.

Many thanks to all those listed here and to everyone whose support helps us to provide food to people in need.
