GUSTAVUS’ 2012 RECORD WHEN... Game NotesGame Notes54-16, the Auggies have had Gustavus’ number as of late, winning 37-20 last season in St. Peter for their third consecutive victory in the series. Gustavus had previously won the last six meetings in St. Peter prior to last season. Typically known to attack its opponents through the air, Augsburg displayed a strong ground game in its season-opener, racking up a total of 260 yards on 44 rushing attempts. The Gusties will once again look to take care of the football and rely on a strong pass rush to disrupt the rhythm of Augsburg’s freshman quarterback Ayrton Scott, who will be making his second career start today.

MEET THE HEAD COACHES...Gustavus Head Coach Peter Haugen is in his fourth season at the helm of the Gustavus football program. Haugen has a combined record of 10-20 in his first three seasons. A graduate of Bethel University, Haugen was the head coach at Washburn High School priorto coming to Gustavus. Coach Frank Haege is in his seventh season at the head of the Augsburg football team. Haege, who was an assistant at Augsburg from 1996–98, served several coaching stints in the arena football ranks before taking over the Auggie football team. A 1992 graduate of the University of Wisconsin- Stout, Haege has compiled an overall record of 27–44 in his seven-plus seasons at Augsburg.

DUBOSE GOES OVER 100... With 119 yards on 26 carries Saturday afternoon at Simpson, junior running back Jeffrey Dubose eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the fourth time in his Gustavus career. He is also the last Gustavus running back to go for over 100 yards, running for 148 yards against Hamline last season. Dubose’ rushing performance in the season-opener is the best since Mitch Anderson `07 ran for 142 yards on 24 carries in the opener against Williamette on Sept. 8, 2007 in the opening game of New Hollingsworth Field. Only three running backs have eclipsed 100 yards rushing in the first game of the season over the past 10 years. The other being Andy Traetow with 103 yards on 22 carries against Alma on Sept. 8, 2002.

BIG PLAYS ON DEFENSE... Gustavus benefited from a pair of defensive touchdowns that shifted the momentum and turned the tides in Saturday’s win over Simpson. It was the first time since Sept. 10, 2007, that a Gustavus defense scored two touchdowns in a game. Linebacker Jared Sieling ’08 returned a 37-yard interception for a touchdown and safety Joe Welch ’10 brought back a 22-yard interception for a touchdown on consecutive defensive series against Carleton. Donte Green’s fumble recovery in the endzone was the first fumble return touchdown since Sept. 20, 2008, when Ethan Armstrong ’09 returned a fumble 21 yards against Hamline, while Torey Asao’s interception return touchdown was also the first since Oct. 9, 2010, when safety Brad Kruckeberg ’11 picked off a pass and brought it back 70 yards against Hamline.

SACK LUNCH: After a season in which Gustavus registered just 12 total sacks, ranking eighth in the MIAC and 203rd in NCAA Division III, the pass rush came alive at Bill Buxton Stadium last Saturday. Gustavus got to Simpson quarterback Taylor Nelson a total of six times, the highest sack total in a game since Nov. 10, 2007 when

the Gusties recorded seven sacks against Carleton. Sophomore defensive end Andrew Lonneman was responsible for three of Gustavus’ six sacks, becoming the first player since defensive tackle Christian Vanek ’10 on Nov. 7, 2009, against St. Olaf to have three sacks.

RUDENICK GARNERS NATIONAL HONORS: After his stellar punting performance on Saturday afternoon, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and D3football.com honored junior Jordan Rudenick in their respective weekly awards. Rudenick was named the MIAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week and the D3football.com National Punter- of-the-Week. In what was a historic day in his first career start, Rudenick punted a total of six times for 290 yards including a 62-yard boomer that gave Gustavus the advantage in field position at a key point in the third quarter. He averaged 48.3 yards per punt, coming just shy of 1990 gradute Brian Ehlenfeldt’s school record 48.7-yard average, which he recorded on Sept. 27, 1986. More importantly than their distance was where the punts came to a stop. On three occasions, Rudenick successfully “coffin cornered” the ball inside the five-yard line. For the day, the Nicollet product successfully downed five punts inside the 20-yard line, the most by a Gustie punter in the past 25 years. Rudenick currently ranks second in NCAA Division III in punting average after week one.

MIAC OFF TO A FAST START... Heading into the opening weekend of conference play, the football teams of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference are off to a historic start. The conference’s nine football hosting institutions are a combined 13-0 through the first two weeks of the season. In the history of the league, the MIAC has not opened with consecutive unbeaten weeks dating back through the last 50 years. Currently, the MIAC is the only undefeated conference in all of NCAA Division III, leading the nation in wins by one over the Centennial Conference which has 12 victories. According to the most recent “Toughest Schedule” list put out by the NCAA, MIAC schools rank 1-though-9 out of 239 competing DIII institutions.

ROOKIE Q TAKES THE STAGE... Since the turn of the century, two Gustavus players have began their quarterbacking career with a win in the season-opener. On Saturday in Indianola, senior wide receiver turned signal caller Muresuk Mena added his name to that list. Escapability in the pocket and smart decision-making were key elements in Mena’s performance, as he accounted for 228 of Gustavus’ 366 total yards. Mena threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, picking up 73 yards rushing and 155 yards passing. Jordan Becker ’10 and Sean Smith ’04 both led the Gusties to wins in their respective season-opener. Becker went 18-for-28 for 207 yards and two touchdowns through the air in a 27-19 win over Coe in 2007, and Smith went 11-for-16 for 169 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-6 win over Alma in 2002.

MIAC Offensive Player-of-the-WeekBrett Baune, ConcordiaFargo, N.D. / SouthThe senior running back ran for more than 250 yards and a game-clinching touchdown to lead the Cobbers to a big 38-14 win over Buena Vista.

MIAC Defensive Player-of-the-WeekBrett Skoog, BethelLong Lake, Minn. / OronoOutside linebacker Brett Skoog, whose big plays - including a sack and two turnovers - helped Bethel to a 21-0 win over Wartburg. Skoog’s stat line included six tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception.

MIAC Defensive Player-of-the-WeekJordan Rudenick, GustavusNicollet, Minn. / NicolletIn his first appearance as the team’s punter, Jordan Rudenick was sublime, placing five of his six punts inside Simpson’s 20-yard line - including a trio inside the five - and averaging a robust 48.3 yards per punt. Field position was the difference as Gustavus topped Simpson 35-26.

2012 Gustavus Adolphus Football Game Notes

Head Coach Peter HaugenFourth Season11-20 at GustavusOffice: 507-933-7660Email: [email protected]

Peter Haugen, a native of Minneapolis and a 1991 graduate of Bethel University, is entering his fourth year as head football coach at Gustavus Adolphus College.

In his third year as head coach, Haugen led the Gusties to a 2-8 record overall and a 2-6 mark within the MIAC, finishing seventh in the league standings. In three seasons at the head of the Gustavus Adolphus football program, Haugen has compiled an overall record of 11-20 and an MIAC record of 8-16. Last season, Gustavus received three All-MIAC Second Team selections in junior offensive lineman Brian Grundmeyer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), senior defensive lineman Tom Einberger, Jr. (West St. Paul, Minn.), and senior defensive back Brad Kruckeberg (Ellendale, Minn.). Kruckeberg would later go on to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors, while also being named the National Football Foundation’s winner of the Bob Stein Col-lege Scholar Athlete Award.

Haugen, who was the head football coach at Washburn High School for 15 years prior to coming to Gustavus, compiled an overall record of 111-44 during that span, while winning 11 league championships and posting a league record of 76-8. He directed the Millers to the Class AAAA quarterfinals in 2007 finishing with a mark of 9-3. In his last season as the Millers head coach, Haugen’s squad posted a mark of 8-2. While building the program at Washburn, Haugen increased player participation from 35 players in 1994 to 110 players. He also implemented academic monitoring and meal programs for student athletes as well as creating and direct-ing the highly successful Washburn Athletic Leadership Academy. He served as the chair of the Minneapolis Football Conference this past year and he is an active clinician working at many local and regional clinics including the NIKE Coach of the Year clinic. Haugen was also a member of the Metro coaching staff for the Minnesota All-Star game in 1998. He started his coaching career at his alma mater serving as the offensive line coach during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

A three-sport standout at Bethel, Haugen was a starting tight end on the football team, a starting goaltender on the hockey team, and a starting catcher on the baseball team in the late ‘80s and early 90s. In his se-nior year, he earned All-Conference honors in football, and was selected Most Valuable Player of the hockey team.

Haugen became the 17th head coach in the 95-year history of Gustavus football. The Golden Gusties have a long and storied football tradition that includes 22 MIAC titles. The program ranks in the top-50 all-time in Division III (out of 235 institutions) with a 58.3 winning percentage (464-328-21). The Gusties will soon join a very elite group of 40 NCAA Division III institutions whose football teams have won 500 games. Along with great teams, Gustavus has also been blessed with many outstanding individual players, which includes 29 players who have received All-America honors, 12 who have received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, and five who have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Most recently, senior safety Brad Kruckeberg was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Peter, and his wife, Brenda live in St. Peter with their three children, Zeke (14), Zoe (12), and Zetta (6).
