6 FOOTBALL FOR HOPE FORUM 2013 | PROGRAMME

About Football for Hope and the forum

Football for HopeFootball has become a vital instrument for hundreds of social development programmes run by non-governmental and community-based organisations all around the world. These programmes are providing children and young people with valuable tools to actively make a difference in their own lives. By addressing the most pressing issues in each community, the programmes are contributing to positive social change on a global scale.

In support of these efforts and as part of its corporate social responsibility, FIFA initiated Football for Hope in 2005 to offer funding, equipment, training and more visibility, as well as a platform for discussion and collaboration. The ultimate goal is to promote the use the world’s most popular sport to spark positive change for a better future.

Football for Hope Forum 2013With the Football for Hope Forum, FIFA and its partners aim to bring together leading professionals from around the world who use football as a tool for social change and provide them with a unique environment to exchange best practices, strengthen their organisations and develop new ideas and partnerships.

The programme includes presentations, panel discussions and workshops led by representatives from grassroots organisations, sports institutions, global corporations and development institutions, and covers the most important issues relating to football’s contribution to social development and the legacy of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil and abroad.

The FIFA Confederations Cup – Continental showdownOne of the most recent introductions to FIFA’s range of competitions for national teams is the FIFA Confederations Cup, held every four years. In recent times, it has been seen as a warm-up event in the host country of the next FIFA World Cup™, but is by no means a minor competition. In fact, due to the nature of its participants, it is often referred to as the ‘Festival of Champions’ tournament. The FIFA Confederations Cup aims to give the top teams from all continents a chance to represent their region in a world play-off, and this opportunity is particularly important and appealing to teams from certain developing football continents.

Belo HorizonteSince the 18th century, during the days of the Inconfi dência Mineira - an independence conspiracy against the domination of the Portuguese crown – the state of Minas Gerais gambled with the idea of instating a new capital to replace Ouro Preto. Once Brazil declared its independence (1822) and became a republic in 1889, the stage was set for a new capital to be chosen. Among several contestants, the small avillage of Curral del-Rei achieved the right to host the Cidade de Minas, offi cially inaugurated in 1897 and whose name was eventually changed in 1906 to Belo Horizonte (Portuguese for ‘beautiful horizon‘).

Engineer Aarao Reis, an admirer of Paris and Washington, D.C., was responsible for putting the urban planning for the new state capital together. What his project did not contemplate, though, was the fast-paced development through which Belo Horizonte would go after a period of stagnation in the fi rst decades of the 20th century. Soon the city expanded beyond its original limits and new neighbourhoods had to be planned and developed – the most notorious of them the Pampulha, an area of wide avenues and many squares and parks designed in the 1940s by Brazil‘s premier architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Today Belo Horizonte - or Beagá, as the city is famously known, after the sound of initials BH in Portuguese – is the sixth-most populous city in Brazil with just over 2.4 million residents, while its metropolitan area comprising a total 34 cities ranks third in the country, behind Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

From the beauty of its green areas to the careful city-planning; from the wide array of cultural activities to the nature wonders of the Serra do Curral surrounding it, Belo Horizonte has several reasons for being constantly appointed as one of the Latin American metropolises that provides the best qualify of life.

11 for Health

Health is key to development and growth. Developing countries have to fi ght poverty, hunger and infections, but also diseases that proliferate with increasing prosperity. While HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis are still killing millions worldwide, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and heart disease are catching up. Football, the one passion that unites people regardless of age, gender, language, skin colour, culture or religion, may prove a uniquely effective and low-cost tool in the world’s fi ght for health.

Information on the curriculuam session on day 4 – Saturday, 29 June

Around the world, organisations use a variety of methodologies and curricula in the implementation of football-based social programmes. While approaches towards achieving positive social development through football vary across organisations and countries, the goals remain the same: empowering young participants and delivering a message through football.

In the session on day 4 of the Football for Hope Forum, ten different organisations will present how they are using their own unique approaches to football to transform their communities – be it in the area of HIV prevention, social integration, health promotion or youth empowerment. Each example will actively engage the forum attendees and provide valuable insights into the diverse range of approaches which integrate football into social programmes.
