FOOTBALL AND NETBALL IS BACK…
On Behalf of the Southern Football League Board and Administration I extend a huge welcome to the 2015 SFL Football and Netball seasons.
I extend a very warm welcome to all new players, officials and supporters in the SFL.
It has been another busy off-season at SFL HQ which I look forward to sharing some of the news and developments in the coming weeks.
A quick look back a couple of weeks at the AFL Victoria Metropolitan Senior Championships. We again congratulate AFL Victoria on facilitating such a professional competition. The SFL unfortunately went down convincingly to the Essendon District Football League at IKON Park.
The program and team was well led by Head Coach David King and very well supported by Paul Hopgood, Ben Murphy, Ben Lockwood, Wayne Fuller and Toby Jedwab. The professionalism of our program was a main focus point this year. ‘Magnet for magnet’ we were always going to be up against it and this will continue to be a slow grind for the SFL in years to come. The challenge is to now continue to build on the SFL representative program by continuing to work with our clubs to nurture and transition new youth into our competition.
The SFL are pleased to announce a new partnership with
beyondblue which has seen the entire first home and away football / netball round branded “beyondblue Round 1”. The purpose of this partnership is to raise awareness and understanding of depression and anxiety while promoting beyondblue messages through fundraising initiatives.
The season will kick-off with real profile this weekend as East Brighton and Dingley will battle it out for the beyondblue Cup under lights on Saturday night at Trevor Barker Oval. Victorian Premier, The Hon Daniel Andrews MP, Netball Victoria CEO Michelle Plane and beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman will be guest speakers at the Season Launch which will provide enjoyable listening.
I along with the Board, Administration and entire SFL community were extremely saddened last week to hear the passing of Dingley Football Netball Club Vice President – Shane Franklin.
Shane was an incredible servant and supporter of the DFNC over many years. Shane will be remembered for his tireless work to build the club and the passion with which he approached things relating to the club.
The SFL along with East Brighton and Dingley football clubs will use the beyondblue Cup to acknowledge and mourn Shane’s passing by lining up pre-game and participating in a minute’s silence.
I wish everyone at all aspects of the SFL, the very best for this opening beyondblue Round 1.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTER
The sun is setting earlier, the stinking hot days have become decidedly milder and fallen leaves have begun littering footpaths all over Melbourne.
It can only mean one thing.
Yep, the footy’s back, folks, and after another long and tortuous preseason, Round 1 can’t come quickly enough.
But before we delve headfirst into what promises to be another exciting year of Southern league football, let’s first briefly look back at the year that was.
The Division 1 flag returned to Hurlingham Park for the second time in three seasons after East Brighton belted Dingley in one of the all-time great Grand Final performances. Congratulations to Ben Murphy, Ben Douthie and co on a tremendous year and I’m sure they will be the team to beat again in season 2015.
We also welcome Mordialloc back into Division 1 for the first time since 2012. The Bloods swept all before them in Division 2 last year and with their talented and well-drilled list they can certainly be competitive in the top grade. Mordi replaces wooden spooner Heatherton, who have been relegated to the second division.
But come 2pm on Saturday, all of the trials and tribulations of 2014 will be a distant memory as the 10 teams begin their campaigns for September glory.
East Brighton V Dingley – Trevor Barker Oval
Last year’s grand finalists resume hostilities in a Saturday night blockbuster with both clubs keen to get their 2015 seasons off to a flyer. Of their 4 meetings in 2014 the ledger was squared at two wins apiece, however both of the Vampires’ victories came in September – a fact that would have had Dingley smarting for the last six months. This will be another classic encounter but my gut feel says the Dingoes will come out firing as they probably have more to prove than the reigning premiers. But regardless of the outcome of this match, it’s a safe bet that these two sides will again feature late in September.
East Malvern V St Pauls – Dunlop Reserve
St Pauls have been a tremendous team for several years, winning a premiership in 2013 and coming
within a kick of another grand final appearance last year. Expect to see them up there again when the whips are cracking at the end of the year. The Panthers were a bit of a surprise packet, winning enough games to keep themselves in finals contention until the final few rounds. An up-and-coming side, a finals berth is not beyond them. Should be a great clash, but you’d think the Dogs will be too strong.
St Kilda City V Cheltenham – Peanut Farm
The Rosellas lost several matches they should have won last year, chief among which was their final-term capitulation against Chelsea Heights in the Elimination Final. City also ended their season poorly, with just two wins and a draw coming from their last 13 matches. They are rebuilding, but are starting to head in the right direction. It’s hard to know what to make of Cheltenham; they should win this, but given their inherent unpredictability they are no certainties.
Clayton V Bentleigh – Meade Reserve
The Demons won seven matches in their debut Division 1 season – a commendable effort – which suggested a finals appearance wouldn’t be too far away. Could they make it this year? It’s possible, but this game against Clayton is a must win. The Clays were cellar dwellers last year, and it’s hard to see them improving enough to avoid a bottom three finish in 2015. Bentleigh will take the points here.
Mordialloc V Chelsea Heights – Ben Kavanagh Reserve
Mordi were clearly the standout team in Division 2 and are well-equipped to handle the jump in class. This makes their opening game on Sunday against Chelsea Heights a must-watch. The Heighters’ 2014 semi final appearance probably flattered them, and I’m not convinced they have what it takes to reach that stage again this season. Will be a close one, but I’m tipping a first-up win at home to the new boys.

NEWS FROM BEN KAV RESERVE Terry Evans, our 2015 MFNC president welcomes all of our members, sponsors, players and supporters to our first game back in Division 1. What a year 2014 was, both of our Senior Men’s teams winning premierships, first time in our history for it to happen in the same year. Therefore today we have official premiership flag unfurling for both teams. The Reserves flag unfurling at 11:40am will be conducted by Glynis Wickham, a Life Member and celebrating 40 years of volunteering at the Bloods during 2015. Glynis started at MFNC helping her mother in the canteen while her father (also a life member) played football for the Bloods. She then moved into timekeeping roles for both the Bloods and VFA representative sides for many years and also combined this with helping on the committee and fulfilling the secretary’s role, not to mention her sterling work running the canteen. Congratulations to Glynis for all of her work for us over the years and for many more to come. The Seniors flag will be unfurled at 2pm by
two of our illustrious Past Presidents & Life Members in Neil Low and Kevyn Lavelle . Neil has been involved with MFNC for over 30 years starting as a player then moving onto committee work and finally stepping in when needed as a very able President over the last several years. Neil always puts his hand up when help is needed especially with our fundraising & social efforts, just do not mention chocolate to him. Kevyn started at MFNC as a local businessman roped in as a sponsor over 25 years ago and has not left since then but has always put his hand up too when needed, Kevyn has filled most posts on the committee and in addition had several years as President also. Congratulations to Neil & Kevyn on a honour well deserved and we look forward to their continued ongoing support.A warm welcome to all of the CHFC Demons people today as both teams play for the inaugural Mordialloc Sporting Club cup, we are looking forward to renewing our local rivalry this year and for many years to come, we have always had a fierce but friendly competiveness with you so welcome back to Ben Kav today.A big thank you to all of our 2015 sponsors

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESEAST BRIGHTON UNDER 19’S Exciting times with the launch of the Under 19’s team and a whole influx of youth into the Vampire’s lair. Happy to announce John Black as coach ably assisted by Greg Young and the boys willing to step up, a lot from the 2014 Under 17’s team but all in all the Colts make a welcome addition to the East Brighton cause. Whilst the Club doesn’t hold any grandiose plans for this particular team the club hopes they make a reasonable fist of the year ahead. Players still welcome contact Greg Young 0418-335-224
RESERVES We wish all the best for new Coach Jason Louey and the season ahead. The Reserves gig has been the toughest in Senior football with little reward over the past 20 years. Players need to be more committed than what we have
seen previously but with better depth than we have seen in recent years the club hopes for a better overall result. Players also still required. Contact Steve Hill 0412-015-008. The Reserves are an important part of the club and require support from Members, players and supporters alike.
SENIORS The Seniors have been around the mark for a few years now but each season presents a new set of challenges and 2015 will be no exception. It should never be taken for granted that success automatically follows as it simply doesn’t. It takes meticulous planning and a lot of luck. Planning is the easier of the two as not all plans necessarily work the way they were intended. Luck is in the lap of the God’s and the competition is littered with Club’s with great expectations that have fallen short so season 2015 holds no expectations other than putting the best team
possible on the park each week and see where that takes us. The club has recruited well so hopefully East Brighton can feature in shaping the final outcome of the competition. Any thoughts of Premiership favourites is premature, to say the least.

DINGLEY What a way to kickstart the season - a blockbuster Grand Final rematch under lights at a famous venue, preceded by a function hosted by our ex-Prez with an audience filled with dignitaries including the SFL CEO and the Victorian Premier! The expectation is for a large crowd, a great game, and the Dingoes to perform just a little better than the last time these sides met. For Dingley, it’s almost a new look team, with the off-season infusion of a number of reportedly well-credentialled recruits from other leagues, although it will be a few weeks before they’re all ready to be unveiled. Some new names to look out for: Steven Gaertner, Daniel Farmer, Danny Ades, Michael Turville, Stuart Cleeve, Tom Wright, Ryan Pearson, Calhan McQueen, Jake Mullen and Daniel Turcarelli (returning). On the exit side, departures have been few, so the battle for first team places will be intense. With the club’s best wishes, Lucas Walmsley has gone to try his luck at a higher level, Jack Williams is back at Sandy, and Azza Sawers has decided to give it a crack
up the bush. Tony Lavars resumes the captaincy after a couple of years of sterling service from Lee Wonnacott, whilst Tommy Patterson has reluctantly hung up the boots. With the beginning of each new season comes renewed expectation and hope for success. Unfortunately, it also seems to bring with it ever-increasing operational costs, which cannot be borne by player subscriptions and the continued generosity of our loyal sponsors alone. So I’ll hit you with this: “Love local footy?...Join the Club!” Last year’s paid up membership numbers were, quite frankly, extremely disappointing given our perceived level of support, and is a source of Club revenue that needs to be urgently addressed and remedied. There are various packages available, the most basic being the $60 social membership which gives entry to all home and away games. As far as I’m concerned, I feel I get that paid back tenfold in excitement and entertainment, and therefore urge every rank and file follower, even if they only get to a handful of matches, to make this most basic donation to our great club. Volunteers,
spouses and junior parents get an even cheaper deal, meaning there is no excuse for anybody with even a modicum of passion not to get involved.Off-field, the club with a new name - now known as the Dingley Football and Netball Club - also has Colin Craney taking over the reins of Presidency from Leigh, although the latter is sure to stay busily in amongst it. The girls have lined up a cracking social calendar, details of which can be found on our website and/or Facebook pages. The first big function is the Denmen’s Lunch, next Saturday coinciding with our opening home game against St Kilda City.A huge thanks to all our sponsors who have again hopped on board - a complete list is yet to be compiled - but I know it includes the Dingley Sports and Recreation Club, Dingley Coterie Group (the Denmen), Carlisle Homes, Dingley International Hotel, Bendigo Bank, Buxton Real Estate, Eagle Digital Print..and a host of others who will be named in ensuing editions. Meanwhile, let’s enjoy the ride, and truly make this the year of the Dingo!
CLAYTON Welcome to Meade Reserve for the first game of 2015. We are pleased to host Bentleigh FC. Today players are wearing double black arm bands in tribute to Brian Cook and Simon Vaughan. Cookie and Simmo both fine Clubmen passed away after battles with cancer. Their contributions were outstanding.
Chemist Warehouse Clayton – Senior report: Clayton was pleased to secure the services of Nick Scanlon, a six time Premiership player at Narre Warren. Nick was seeking a Senior Coaching role in 2015 and we were very happy to give him an opportunity. Jason Smith has assisted in the steady preparation of the troops as Senior Assistant Coach. The Preseason has been busy with over 40 players coming and going. It will certainly be a very different Clayton outfit in all grades. Time will tell where they all sit. Jayden Gilmour will captain the side in 2015, ably assisted
by Jack Day and another Club stalwart, Xavier Deayton. Go Clays.
ABC Coins – Reserves Report. Similar story: The Club was pleased to continue the clean sweep of coaching staff, appointing another outsider, Matt Ladson as Reserves coach. Matt has lengthy experience coaching at this level. He will be ably assisted by Chris Andrew. The side will be a lot younger than 2014, which is great from a Club development point of view.
CWB Meats – Thirds Report: The popular Chris ‘Fro’ Dureau has been appointed coach and marshall of the thirds. The numbers have been very strong at Wednesday training sessions since Christmas. A credit to Fro and his helpers’ enthusiasm. Welcome to all the new faces. We hope the boys will enjoy their games and continue their camaraderie by patronising all our social functions.
State Gas Appliances – Netball Report: Cassie and Wendy Townley have had a very successful reaction to the 2014 Premiership with the fielding of a second side. The numbers at training has heartened all at the Club. It is a big commitment by the girls and we all look forward to following their progress in a higher grade. Good Luck to all.
Social Calendar: The 10K Reverse Draw is on from midday Sunday 19th April. $100 includes, drinks, spit lunch, comedy show and a chance to win the cash. See Robbie Imbriano or Peter Harris for tix.ANZAC Day – a Lunch has been organised for the pregame against East Malvern. Local returned serviceman, Steve Cook, will speak about his experiences in Afghanistan. Cost is $40 including a drinks package for 2 hours. See Robbie Imbriano or Neil Daly for tix.

With 1 in 7 players in the football codes affected by concussion the question is how much do players and parents really understand about the long-term affects of concussion?
CONCUSSION AND DEPRESSION: IS THERE AN ESTABLISHED LINK?
Dr Naomi P HarrisConcussion and depression are two medical conditions that are spoken of frequently in the community. They are not always spoken of in relation to each other, however as more is discovered about both medical conditions the question is being raised as to whether there is a causal link.
Google defines concussion as (1) temporary unconsciousness or confusion and other symptoms caused by a blow to the head. As a medical practitioner, working with the VFL, combat sports and Melbourne City FC, I define concussion according to the medical definition of ‘a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination’ (Mayo Clinic).
The World Health Organisation states that depression is ‘a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration. Depression can be long lasting or recurrent, substantially impairing an individual’s ability to function at work or school or cope with daily life’ (WHO).
For many years now the importance of recognising, and correctly treating concussion has become paramount in all sporting arenas. Since the development of the first sideline-screening tool (SCAT) in 2005, recognition of concussion has improved. The sideline tool includes the testing of balance, in what is known as the Balance Error Scoring System, which can be easily performed after the player is removed from play. More recently in 2012 the SCAT3 was released, at the same time as the Child-SCAT3 was released.
Concussion management has also drastically improved with the advent of preseason baseline cognitive screening. This empowers the physician to safely return the player to training and contact sport at a time that is medically safe for the player.
Interestingly as the research and knowledge surrounding concussion has drastically increased, the link with depression has been forged. The research is largely in ex-American Footballers but there is a suggestion that the prevalence of depression increases with the increased number of concussions in their playing history. Dr K M Guskiewicz and colleagues have published that in ex-players with more than three concussions they had a three-fold increase in depressive episodes. For one or two concussions the increase was 1.5 fold. They commented that it is important that we understand the potential neurological consequences of recurrent concussion.Through correct recognition, diagnosis and management of concussion, long-term sequale can be minimised. Safe return to play is paramount in the medical management of all people with concussion, regardless of their level of physical activity. Concussion in a junior player is as important as concussion is the older recreational player. If you are at all suspicious that someone you know is playing whilst concussed, or training whilst concussed, it is imperative that this is brought to the attention of the coaching or medical staff. If in doubt please contact your local GP, a sports physician or your local hospital.
Optimus Concussion management is working towards improving concussion management in Australia. By utilising technology, providing education and ensuring that clubs and schools have access to the best remove from play and return to play tools, they aim to utilise baseline testing and gold standards to deliver concussion programs across Australia at the highest level.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Welcome to a new year of footy at the Southern Football League.
After last year’s exciting finish to the season with Mordialloc defeating Skye to become the division two premiers and move up to division one, two new teams enter division two to begin the hunt for premiership glory.
Heatherton move down to division two, where they won the flag in in 2006 and 2009, and will be one of the favourites to do so this year. Keysborough join the Southern Football League in 2015, coming from the Casey Cardinia Football League, they last won a flag in 1976 and will be looking to break that drought this year.
Competition will no doubt be fierce again this season so without further adieu, let’s kick off the previews for round one.
Murrumbeena vs Hampton (Murrumbeena Park) Following one of the clubs most successful season’s in recent years (not taking into account their div three flag), Hampton go into 2015 with a truck load of confidence after finishing fourth on the ladder and making the finals in 2014, narrowly going down to Skye by 18 points. Though the Hammers have lost key forward Chris Worner and gun midfielder Will Forham, they have picked up quite a few players during the offseason and should be able to cover the losses.
Murrumbeena went through quite the opposite last season, missing out on the finals and finishing a paltry eighth on the ladder. They will look to climb back into the top and fight their way into a grand final appearance. The list at Murrumbeena has made a few changes from last year including former Heatherton and Oakleigh District utility Josh Wright as well as former Cheltenham young gun Chris Niclasen.
This should be an interesting game to kick off the season; Hampton won both matchups last year and will look to get their season off to a good start. I like the Hammers in this one. Hampton by 14 points
Doveton Eagles vs Keysborough (Power Reserve) Doveton, for the most part, performed admirably in their debut season in division two. They showed that they could be competitive against the top sides and are a chance to move up the ladder this season. With new coach Robbie Kreskas on board, the Eagles are contenders for a fringe spot in the finals.
In their first season in the Southern Football League, Keysborough will be the great unknown. They struggled while playing in the Casey Cardinia League and decided to make the jump. Can they do what fellow league jumpers Dingley did and win their way to division one. Only time will tell.
This is a great opportunity for Doveton to prove they
belong in division two but I’m going to go with the new boys in town. Keysborough by 10 points
Oakleigh District vs Skye (Princess Highway Reserve) Division two’s perennial underachievers go up against last year’s runners up in what could be the match of the round to start the season off. Oakleigh welcome back a host of former players to the club in Grant Pitts and David Velardo and despite the loss of star Paul Fermanis, should field one of their strongest sides in years.
Skye on the other hand will be looking to maintain their form after a grand final appearance last season. The club has lost veteran players in Matt Doyle and the Kitchin brothers, but should still field a strong side.
With both sides looking like flag contenders, this will be a tight match but I like the moves Oakleigh have made in the offseason and I think they will win this one. Oakleigh by 17 points
Heatherton vs Caulfield (Ross Street Reserve) Heatherton move back down to division two after collecting the wooden spoon in division one in 2014. The big question for the Tonners this season is will they follow the path laid down by East Malvern and Mordialloc and contend for the premiership straight away or will they finish around the middle like Highett did last year.
Caulfield on the other hand, like Hampton, are coming off one of their best seasons in years and will be looking at making back to back finals appearances. With spearhead Adam Connell leading the way, making the finals is well within the realms of possibility for the Bears who boast a solid young core to compliment the power forward.
Tough matchup but I think the Bears will take this one out. Caulfield by 22 points
Highett vs Springvale Districts (Turner Road Reserve) Highett will be looking to improve on 2014 after finishing fifth on the ladder and falling out of the finals in the first week against Hampton. The loss of Khaled Kandakji will be a loss up forward but I am looking forward to seeing how Tom Brown plays this year. The midfielder/forward was selected for the SFL team for the Metro Championships this year and will be the most important player for the Dogs.
Springvale Districts will looking to bounce back after a disappointing season. The loss of Gavin Vasallo hurts them but the inclusion of power forward James Gough from Mount Waverly gives them a forward presence they haven’t had in years.
Another good game of footy to start the season, hard to pick between these two sides who had some good contests last year. I’m going to pick the Dogs who can be tough to beat at home. Highett by 9 points

SKYE The season arrived! After a disappointing end to 2014, our guys seem to have shaken off the grand final losses and are ready to go one better in 2015. Our preseason kicked off in early December and our guys have been working very hard. We have had excellent numbers on the track. Our preseason finished some solid practice matches, which gave the staff and supporters a chance to see the improvement of existing players as well as the abilities of the new recruits. We certainly lost some talent in the off-season but were able to counter by picking up some solid recruits.
Off-field, the committee gainedsome new faces that are eager to fill a role and help the club to grow. It will again be led by Christian McGuire in his second year at the helm.
The club welcomed Chris
Rodrigues as the new thirds coach and Adam Lagerewskij as under 19s coach. They will join Ben Walker who has returned to lead the seniors and Chris Smith who is again coaching our reserves side. We are looking forward to seeing our coaching team working together in 2015.
We’d like to congratulate Aaron Pacey on being awarded the senior captaincy for the sixth year running. We’d like to also congratulate our new captains; Brent Nanopoulos (reserves), Heath Burridge and Elliott Williams (thirds) and Josh Scrviano (under 19s) along with their leadership teams; Aaron Harper and Marty Watts (seniors), Nick Webb, Cal Lester and Scott Thorne (reserves), Dean Flynn and Paul Follett (thirds) and Luke Broomhall (under 19s).
The netball program grew over the summer with our girls recruiting
well. We will field two teams this season. The girls had their first game last week and were very impressive. It is going to be exciting to see what they can achieve this year. We’d like to welcome Brooke Cracknell back on board as player/coach of the netball program.
We’d also like to acknowledge our sponsors for the 2015 season: Harcourts Carrum Downs, D&D Heating and Cooling, Icon Sports, Lime Health & Fitness, The Bottle-O Carrum Downs, The Sands Hotel, The Seaford Hotel, Lawrence & Hanson, Flinders Community Christian College. A special thank you to the Albion Hotel in Dandenong for supporting us again for this tenth season.
Our club is proud to be celebrating its tenth year and we hope to do it with a lot of success. We are very much looking forward to round 1. It is going to be a big year at the hangar!

MAN ON THE MARK / ANDREW PALOCZI
At last the SFL season has arrived and with it a new look division 3, which will now feature 12 teams and an extra game each week. So there will be even more reason to hang around during the cold Melbourne winter. But let’s hope the sun stays around a bit longer, at least for round 1.
Spectators won’t have to wait for the new clubs in the division to come face-to-face. The SFL welcomes back the 2011 division 3 premiers, the Southern Dragons after a couple of seasons away from the competition, and also looks forward to seeing 2012 premiers, Moorabbin back in the division. The Kangaroos host the Southern Dragons and it will be interesting to see which club is able to make an early statement to kick off the 2015 season.
Dandenong travels to Barry Powell Reserve to take on Lyndale. The Redlegs finished 2014 in eighth place, and you would favour the Pumas to claim the win in this round as they look to build on a solid season that culminated in a preliminary final appearance.
Ashwood is on its home turf against Mount Waverley and despite not making the finals last year, the Magpies can take heart from a stirring win against this week’s opponent, a feat no other club could manage for the season. The Mountain Lions will have to adjust to life without spearhead James Gough who has moved on after a season in which he brought up a century of goals. In brighter news, the club has retained the services of grand final star Jarrod Wilkin.
Black Rock had a brief taste of finals footy in its last campaign and will be confident of an even better 2015. The Jets are the home team against South Yarra. Despite some positive moments, the Lions managed only five wins and occupied seventh place on last season’s ladder. The Jets should be too good in this match.
Endeavour Hills started 2014 with a couple of wins and would have been disappointed to manage only two more for the season. The Falcons are at home at Barry Simon Reserve and will take on Sandown. After earning the double chance and not recording a finals win, the Cobras will be keen to translate their hard work into greater rewards this season. Sandown has been attracting headlines ahead of the season with former AFL star Brendan Fevola expected to line up for the club in early May in a one-off appearance, but for now the focus is on round 1 and the Cobras should make a winning start.
After earning a wooden spoon in 2014, Hallam has the unenviable task of venturing to Roy Dore Reserve to test itself against grand finalist Carrum Patterson Lakes. The Hawks have taken on a fresh look with former Sydney and Richmond player Gary Frangalas assuming the coaching reins, and new president Matthew Brew still in his early twenties. This combination may prove successful in the future, but the Lions should record an impressive victory to start the season.

beyondblue encourages people in the Southern Football League (SFL) community, including players and supporters, to be pro-active in looking after their mental health and to take action if they think they could be struggling with depression or anxiety.
Depression and anxiety are common conditions, with research showing at least one in five Australians has experienced depression, anxiety or both in the past year.
Both depression and anxiety can be debilitating if not treated – and people can find it difficult to manage their daily lives because these conditions affect the way they think, feel and how they act.
The good news is that with the right treatment, most people recover from these conditions and are able to take back control of their lives.
beyondblue is proud to partner with the SFL, to raise awareness and understanding of depression and anxiety among League players, their families and friends. As part of this new partnership, the first League football and netball round of the year (April 11-12) will be a beyondblue round.
The highlight of the round will be a clash between last year’s Division 1 Senior Grand Finalists, East Brighton and Dingley, for the inaugural SFL beyondblue Cup. The Cup match will kick off at 7:30PM on Saturday April 11 at the Trevor Barker Oval.
The Victorian Premier The Hon. Daniel Andrews will speak at the event and will be joined by two other speakers, beyondblue
CEO Georgie Harman and Netball Victoria CEO Michelle Plane.
Ms Harman said the SFL beyondblue round and Cup is an excellent opportunity to promote good mental health among League players and supporters.“As one in five Australians has experienced depression, anxiety or both in the past year, it is vital that our message is heard by everyone in the Australian community,” she said
“We are enormously grateful to the SFL for partnering with us. Together we can send the message that depression and anxiety can affect anyone, no matter how tough or physically fit they are, and it takes guts for someone to take action to take back control of their life.
“Becoming familiar with the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety is important because you never know when you will need to recognise those symptoms in yourself or someone else - and take action to get better.
“I encourage everyone in the SFL community to check out the beyondblue website (www.beyondblue.org.au), for information on these signs and symptoms and the actions you can take to look after yourself, your mates and your family.
“Anyone who may be struggling, or knows someone who is, should contact beyondblue’s Support Service on 1300 22 4636 or online via www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support for online chat (3PM-midnight) and email responses within 24 hours.”

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTESSOUTH YARRA It has been a big preseason at the Den with lots happening.
Big thanks to Owen Pearse and his many helpers at the Masters BBQs which raised some much needed funds for the club.
Owen Pearse has also been teaching the Lion Cubs how to punch at the Auskick clinic. Big thanks to Yo-get-it Frozen Yogurt for agreeing to be a Sponsor of the Lion Cubs Auskick for 2015, supplying participants with vouchers for the whole 2015 season. It was a great start to the season with 16 in attendance including 3 girls. Big thanks to the help from the parents.
Electricians and engineers have been teasing the Yarras with the erection of a light tower. We look forward to it being erected in the near future.
The boys are looking very professional in their new training attire. Thanks must go to Pipes and Tonna for creating the design and our sponsor, The Tower Hotel for putting their name on the back.
The 2015 committee sees Bruce Hill at the helm once again, Tommy Rogers (Secretary) and Anthony Pane (Treasurer) in their 3rd year, after four years on the committee Geoff Zach steps up as Vice President, with Owen Pearse, Brett Devlin and Michael Klomp going around again. We welcome to the committee for the first time Tom Hanney, Kieron Finlayson, Luke Dell’orso, Tom Needham, Mark Phillips, Oliver Khoury, Anton Tidmarsh and Robbie Black.
The coaches for 2015 are Devo (Seniors), Drewy (assistant), Marnsy (Reserves) and Dallas (Thirds).
As voted by the players, the senior captain is Tom Hanney, senior vice captains are Jordan Cellini and Cory Brady, other
senior leaders are Tom MacDonald and Tom Rogers. The Reserve captain is the articulate Mr. Nicholas Presland.
The Yarras welcome back its premiership winning team in the kitchen, Barbs and Mouse. If you are around on game day, drop into the best canteen in the league.
We are proud to announce that for the first time at the Yarras, we have a netball team. The ladies have had one win and one loss in their Wednesday night competition. Rohna Chapman is the captain and Jessica Buerckner is the team manager. We wish them all the best for 2015.
The Yarras have recruited well, with Frenchy taking charge on the BBQs he is an early contender for Clubman of the year. Added to the mix are the Irish brothers McDonnell x2, George the Pom, Volpetti, Davies, the Razor (Sharpley), Dimmy, Wyatt, Mohan, Seb, Ridge, Joyce, the old statesman Braybrook, youngsters Hayden and Mangos, Batt, Emery, West, Hume Hwy, Stegga, Donnoli and Stiles. Plus a few sitting in the wings that have not yet put pen to paper. We are pleased to welcome the return of the Mac and the Brown Tree Snake. I have witnessed Devo drool whilst playing with the magnet board as he is very confident about the side he has this year.
The vets have recruited well and big expectations are on the runners up under the tutelage of Bernard Brady.
The season launch was fantastic (would’ve been better if Marnsy had a gag). The Yarras welcomed all the new players and listened to some brilliance from the Mignon.
The hidden destination of the preseason camp was finally announced to the participants well after the arrival time and
the boys found themselves in Blairgowrie. The boys ran to an oval where they trained the house down for an hour. The ball zipped around the oval without touching the ground. The boys then enjoyed some time in the water. After that, the boys headed back to the campsite where they all enjoyed snags and some cold beverages. Damo found himself being kicked out of the pub more times than the Kiwis have beaten the Aussies in sport. A horrific storm hit through the campsite meaning that most boys were found without any accommodation and ended up sleeping in cars.
The Yarras played three practice matches against Hawthorn AFC, Swinburne University AFC and Powelltown and learnt:• The reserves look like a force that could contend on the final day in the season• Chopper has improved remarkably and will be a vital player• The new recruits have fitted in well• Dorca can kick goals• Hilly won a premiership with Powelltown

DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTESSANDOWN It has certainly been a busy off season for the club, and we look forward to a season with new hopes and expectations led by new coach Rick Bean and it all starts with a trip to Endeavour Hills.
A big welcome to all our new players and families who have joined us and we look forward to having you on board. It is an exciting year for the club with the unveiling of our brand new home ground facilities at Edinburgh Reserve which will occur on Saturday May 2nd against Lyndale. We have secured the services of former AFL Player
Brendan Fevola to play a one off game for us and encourage all footy fans to come on down for what should be a great day. Adults $10, Concession $5, Under 15 Free, Kids Entertainment, and an opportunity to meet Fev. The day will also include a Match day luncheon $50 a head with drinks at Bar Prices. Spread the word to all those who love their local footy.
To keep in contact with everything that is going on around the club you head to www.sandowncobrasfc.com.au, LIKE our Facebook Page - Sandown Cobras Football

A special mention to our Junior pathway partner - Parkmore Junior Football Club, who’s oldest age group 16/17’s we have training with us once a week and over the next year or two we hope will feed into us having an Under 19’s team in the SFL. Parkmore is a terrifically well run junior football club and are always hunting for additional players. To find out more, log on to www.parkmorejfc.com.au.
ASHWOOD It’s been a busy off season with Mick Rossborough being appointed Senior Coach after Paul Wineberg stepped aside to focus on his business empire. We would like to thank Bergs for 3 great years and are thrilled that he will continue to pull on the boots for Ashwood each Saturday, an excellent reflection on the quality of the club and the quality of the man.
A big welcome to Mick Rossborough who played for Ashwood back at the start of the 90’s. Mick has been coaching for 20 years and brings not only a wealth of experience but a great reputation as a people person which we have seen first hand with numerous new players coming to our club as they enjoy playing with Mick.
We also have a new reserve coach with Brad Crockett taking some time off from footy to travel around Australia with Mel. Enjoy guys but you will be sorely missed.
Mark Jones the 2013 and 2014 reserve captain has stepped up to take on the challenges of coaching. Daryl Cox has returned home to Ashwood as match day coach to give Mark some support as Mark will be a playing coach.
The 2015 season begins today and everyone seems switched on after a big pre season and ready to take the on challenges of winning enough games to make finals and then push on into hopefully the top spots on the ladder to get the double chance.
We as a club will need a bit of luck , a lot of vocal (in a good way) supporters, our
sponsors support and of course each player to play there role and understand that footy is a team sport and the team only wins if we play as a team.
There will always be up moments and a few frustrating ones but as long as we all stick together and focus on the goals set by the coaches you never know what might happen in 2015. As a club we thank our sponsors, supporters and the tireless volunteers and look forward to an exciting junior and senior football season this year
Our major event this year will be the 30 year reunion that has been organised for the 16th of May see the club website for details.
BLACK ROCK Club News & Social Events: Round 1 at home vs. South Yarra this week will be followed by our first major club function for the year. Season’s Opening night will kick-off from 6:30pm at the club on Saturday night.

I know that everyone is itching to get out and finally play for points the weekend.
Although, it has been a testing time for the club loosing players to country football, we continue to strive for success by building the culture to be a very family orientated affair and to grow our player base. We welcome any players wishing to play football to come down and enjoy the Hawks nest.
We have our Season launch this Saturday the 11th of April at Hallam Recreation reserve 7:00 PM onwards.

DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTESCARRUM PATTERSON LAKES The difference between ordinary & extraordinary is that little “extra”! In sport, as in life we all ask of ourselves at different times is it worth it? Of course it is!! So here we go again as our Club enters our 3rd season of existence & in the SFL. We have assembled a group of people who continue to be proud to represent CPLFNC at senior, reserve, U19 & netball levels. Inaugural coaches Andrew Lucas (Seniors) & Adam Neale (U19s) have handed the baton over to Omar Ak (Seniors), Zac Horsley (Reserves) & Zac White (U19s). Whilst Sophie, Tessa & Georgia still lead our netball who participate this season in Div 3 & 5 of the SFLs 6 Div comp. Your Club wishes each of you every success & rest assured every effort possible will be made to provide the best support.
THE CLUB SPONSOR: Critical for the survival of local sporting Clubs. Without their support communities simply
wouldn t enjoy having a local footy team to follow. We ask all of the CPLNFC family to consider your Clubs sponsors when making a decision regarding spending. Service those who service us. This season Dandy Pre Mix is our Major Sponsor taking over from Mortgage Choice Cheltenham who has led from the front in our first 2 seasons. Again we thank all our sponsors for their support.
THE VOLUNTEER: What a special commodity!! There are simply never enough of these essential members of our Club. We are fortunate to have a loyal dedicated team, but we need more to step up to the plate, particularly home match day. Every little bit helps. We at CPLNFC believe “it is not what the Club can do for us, but what can we do for the Club?” Be a part of the off field team, it genuinely adds a healthy purpose to your day.

MOORABBIN From the outside the 2015 season would appear to be the most challenging year for our football club, with the end of an era seeing many retiring players moving on from many successful years at our proud club. From the inside we have a different opinion with a new look committee, Favourite son and 2012 premiership player Adam Walsh being appointed as Senior coach, Wayne Hardman will be continuing on as our Reserves coach this has excited our playing group who are ready to take on all challenges thrown at them this year.
Seniors: Our Seniors welcome back a wealth of experience in Hayden Schipper, Dave Sheen, Tim De
Niese and Huss Kiki all from our 2012 premiership side. We also extend our welcome to Mick Kinsella, Sean Kelly & Trent Davey who will add plenty of class to our side. Our young guns in Sauce, Zee, Sean Jackson, Caleb & Steele have had massive preseasons which will hold them in good stead for the year.
Reserves : Our reserves team have also enjoyed a number of players training this summer, with plenty of class to choose from and many new faces standing out during the preseason. The group is looking forward to making amends for the last 2 years showing Wayne they have the mental toughness and discipline to return and compete in the finals.
I would like to thank our committee
in Marg, Deb, Pete, Barb, Dan,
Cam, Muzz, Adam & Wayne for all
your hard work over the summer in
preparing the club and group ready
for this season.
Adam, Wayne and all of the playing
group good luck for the season
ahead, let’s work hard and get this
great club up back to where we
belong.
Go ROOS2015.

DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTESDANDENONG It’s been 229 days since a Redlegs outfit last took the field in a gruelling 4pt loss to South Yarra in the Reserves elimination final. In those 229 days, a lot has happened down at Greaves Reserve; a new president (Ian Seagrim), a new senior coach (Glenn Jose), the development of a Netball team, a fresh-faced committee and most importantly a new and exciting vibe within the club.
FOOTBALL To say ‘it’s been a long, tough pre-season under Glenn’ is a huge understatement. There’s been plenty of sweat, tears, self-doubt, constructive criticism and 440m penalties since October – hence the lads are chomping at the bit to get back out on the park when we take on Lyndale! Whilst we’ve had a couple of blokes take the exit door over pre-season, a couple have found the entrance to Greaves
Reserve and we can’t wait to see them light up Division 3 for us. Our Thirds kick off round 1 against Hallam beginning at 9am at Hallam Reserve on Frawley Road. From there, we move to Barry Powell Reserve (Halton Road, Noble Park Nth) as our Reserves (12pm) and Seniors (2pm) take on Lyndale in what is due to be a ripping round 1 contest.
NETBALL The development of a Netball side over the pre-season has been a huge boost for the club. In her first senior coaching gig, Mandi Hall – an experienced netballer herself – has assembled an exciting bunch of girls to represent the Redlegs in the SFL competition in 2015. Starting the season in division 6, the girls take on St. Kilda City from 12pm on court 10 at the Rowan Rd Netball Complex in Dingley Village, in our inaugural match. We’re really excited at what’s
about to unfold in the netball department and can’t wait to see plenty of progression! We’d like to thank Melbourne Online Motors for their support of our netball team in 2015. http://www.MelbourneOnlineMotors.com.au visit them at 64 Lonsdale St, Dandenong – (03) 9793 2284

UNDER 19’S: ON THE UP / ALEX CHARLES
“Don’t think – DO!” The famous quote from John Kennedy may seem overused, and it is. Nevertheless, it resonates with the end of the offseason. So head down and support your local Under 19 SFL side to witness some of the best young talent running around Victoria because footy’s back and this season will be bigger than ever.
Reigning premiers Bentleigh will be looking to add to their undefeated 2014 season when they face Highett in the opening fixture. The side produced an incredible season amassing an astonishing percentage of 313.81 further highlighting their balance between attack and defence. Highett will consider themselves unfortunate to have been paired with such a side, but will approach the game with a nothing-to-lose mentality.
Dingley, on the other hand, will look to build on a wonderful 2014 campaign which saw them succumb to Bentleigh at the last hurdle by a mere 16 points. The club will hope to continue their attacking form which saw them boast the second best offence of the 2014 season.
2014’s best sides will be facing strong competition following a range of personnel changes to the league seeing four clubs – East Brighton, Hallam, Oakleigh District and St Kilda City set to enter the competition – while two clubs – Chelsea Heights and Clayton are among the casualties. These changes only enhance the appeal of the league as it sees the total number of teams increase to twelve, from ten in 2014.
The expansion provides clubs that placed in the bottom half of the table in 2014 an early opportunity to stamp their authority as contenders in season 2015. Cheltenham face newcomers St Kilda City in the opening round and will be aiming to commence their campaign with a valuable four points following an indifferent season 2014.
Meanwhile, Carrum Patterson Lakes get their chance to open the season on a winning note after drawing another new side in Hallam. The side placed sixth in 2014 and will be aiming to ensure a new team doesn’t interfere with their quest to reach finals. In comparison, St Pauls will face a Hampton side eager to turn around their fortunes following a difficult 2014 season only narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon.
Oakleigh District, another new side in 2015, will have their work cut out for them when they face the difficult task of taking on a Skye team who will be looking to build on their final appearance in 2014. Oakleigh will be keen to prove they’ve got what it takes to make an impact in their first season.
Ultimately it is clear that despite the exits of Chelsea Heights and Clayton, the inclusion of four new sides reinforces the increasing development of the Under 19’s competition. The additions can only be of benefit to the growing of the competition with potential for more fans, financial support, and exposure for young talent to be improved at the grassroots level for the upcoming season and years to come.

UMPIRE’S CORNER / THE WHITE KNIGHT
Welcome to season 2015. Our umpiring group trains at Bricker Reserve, Moorabbin East, at 6pm every Tuesday and Thursday and we encourage any former footballers to stay involved in the game by joining us. Former Bentleigh premiership player Ilya Fridman joined us in 2014 and umpired senior finals in his first year as a whistleblower. There must be many other players who could follow in Ilie’s footsteps. Ilie was seen leading a handcuffed Peter Martin from his school in front of astonished students and staff last month. There must be an interesting story to tell about this incident!
Congratulations to Brad Standfield (Goal Umpire) and Libby Toovey (Field Umpire) who have been selected to be part of the Victorian Football League (VFL) Umpiring Development Squad for season 2015. Both Brad and Libby have worked extremely hard over the years to get to this position, including being involved in many of the SFL umpiring development programs and the AFL Victoria umpiring talent pathway programs.
Congratulations to field umpires Annie Mirabile, Luke Porter and Brad Scott, boundary umpires Anthony Embleton, Tim Fierenzi, Ben Priggen and Fraser Somerville, and goal umpires Dan Bomford and David Mandelbaum, who represented us with distinction at the AFL Victoria InterLeague Championships at Ikon Park two weeks ago.
SFL Football Operation Manager Matt Duck, who has worked closely with the SFLUA over
the past four years, is taking up the position of CEO of Diving Victoria at the end of the month. Matt has been a great supporter of umpiring and the White Knight wishes him well in his new position.
Our 2015 Coaching Panel is again headed by Director of Umpiring Peter Mair. The Field Umpires Coach is Brad Lowe, EJ (Michael Ellison Jones) is our Boundary Coach, and Craig (Fraggle) Davenport continues as our new Goal Umpire coach. Toby Jedwab is the Umpiring Department Administrator. If Toby doesn’t have your registration details, you may not be appointed to games and certainly won’t be paid!
At Committee level, Alan Manning has taken over from Ross McNeil as President, Rodd Johnson continues as Secretary and John Borg replaces Alan Manning as Treasurer. Other committee members are David Cormie, Thomas Grundy, Kay Johnson, Tayla Manning, Ross McNeill and Kevin Mitchell.
An umpiring great, Brian Marriott, passed away in the off-season. Brian was SESFLUA President from 1987-1990, and umpired 423 matches over abut fifteen seasons including eleven Div 1 Senior Grand Finals and at least one Div 2 Grand Final. He was Chairman of the Umpires Appointments Board in 1982, was made a Life Member of the SESFLUA in 1984 and is a Life Member of the SESFL. The White Knight offers his condolences to the Marriott family.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Despite a promising start by the SFL, the star-studded Essendon District Football League outfit proved too strong in the opening game of the 2015 AFL Victoria Metro Championships on Saturday, running away to a thumping 81-point win at Ikon Park.
The EDFL wasted several opportunities to put the game beyond the reach of the SFL in the first half but a stunning best-afield display from ex-Richmond ruckman Andrew Browne helped his team to their 16.13 (109) to 4.4 (28) victory.
SFL coach David King said post match that although they were disappointed with the outcome, the result was reflective of the difference in class between the two sides.
“It’s probably exactly where the two competitions are at,” King said.
“They probably could’ve beaten us by a lot more. They missed some opportunities and left us in the game early.
“I thought we started well that first 10 minutes but the next sort of 50 they owned.”
An early goal to Dingo Dan Bolger was a just reward for the Southerners’ solid work around the stoppages, and their competitive opening stanza raised the prospect of an upset.
That was to be the SFL’s only major until the eight-minute mark of the final quarter as the EDFL seized control of the match in the second term on the back of Browne’s aerial dominance. But the Bombers couldn’t convert their chances in front of the sticks, registering 6.10 for the half and leaving the SFL with a glimmer of hope at the long break.
However any chance of a Southern fight back was quickly snuffed out with the EDFL piling on six unanswered goals in a third term onslaught.
Although the SFL’s slick ball movement through the corridor at times looked first rate, their inefficiency by foot meant they just couldn’t penetrate their forward 50 with any regularity. Time and again their poor disposal would lead to turnovers on the half forward line, with the EDFL then launching swift counter attacks and carving up the SFL with their precision foot skills through the middle of the ground.More than anything else, it was the EDFL’s class, poise and skill execution that really set them apart from the SFL and got them over the line.
But despite the result being all but decided by the final
change, the Southerners refused to roll over and instead
they showed plenty of spirit and pride in the jumper in the
last quarter.
Throwing caution to the wind, they played some fast, exciting
football and piled on three goals in the final 12 minutes to
add some respectability to the scoreboard.
In a game in which there were few standout players wearing
silver, St Pauls midfielder Jarryd Allan claimed the medal as
the SFL’s best player.
Fighting hard all day, Allan seemingly had the ball on a
string and never shied away from the contest, as evidenced
by a ripped guernsey and a split head which required
conspicuous bandages to patch up.
And King was effusive in his praise of the hard-nosed
Doggies ball-winner.
“If he didn’t take the ball he took a body and you know I love
that,” King said.
“I just loved his want to play as best he could and try and get
us over the line.
“He was a great performer for us today.”
Dingley speedster Jackson Peet also won plenty of the footy
and provided a spark, particularly in the final term, while
Chelsea Heights’ diminutive youngster Jordy Peryman
earned kudos for his efforts both in attack and on the ball.
Skipper Ben Douthie worked tirelessly for four quarters,
as did his East Brighton teammate Andrew Jansen, whose
ability to play at either end of the ground proved to be an
invaluable asset.
Andrew Frost (Dingley) was also influential in several roles
with his aggression at the contest and Harley Ambrose (St
Pauls) stood out with his clean ball use out of the back half,
but ultimately too much was left to too few.
The EDFL’s Fort Caruso and Adam Iacobucci were both
beneficiaries of Browne’s exquisite ruckwork, racking up a
stack of possessions around the stoppages, while former
Port Melbourne spearhead Dean Galea also booted five
goals for the winners.
