Business:
Pete opened the meeting by welcoming any new members or guests. We had 30 folks present for the meeting
including one guest, Nancy W. and our guest speaker, Mitch Lanoue.
Pete then introduced our guest speaker Mitch Lanoue, formerly of the Tempe Police Department (23 years), is
also a former Director and Road Caption for Foothills. Mitch was a motor officer and trainer with TPD and for 10
years he also trained the state motor officers as well as was involved in accident reconstruction. Before he
began his talk he had everyone hold hands. With a designated start and stop person, we timed how long a
squeeze would take to go through the group: 13 seconds.
Mitch then talked about Reaction Time. He explained that at 45 mph a driver moves 66’ in one second. The
distance needed to stop once brakes are applied is 97’. In order to see a hazard and dome to a stop a person
must do the following:
1. Visualize the hazard
2. Decide what to do
3. Apply what was decided
These things take at least 1.5 seconds – which translates into 130’. Therefore, traveling at 45mph, seeing a
hazard and coming to a stop a motorcyclist needs 200 feet, which is almost half of a football field!
Mitch suggested one thing to do to shorten that travel time is to cover your brakes at every intersection. That
alone can shave off almost a second of time. We then re‐ran the squeeze test, which took 8 seconds!
Mitch left a chart showing Braking/Stopping Distances: enclosed
