President’s Message

“New Year Promises”

APICS Members and Friends:

Welcome to the New Year! This is the time of year when we hear endless conversations about how we are going to improve ourselves and how this is the year we do things differently. As one who has been there, I can tell you the fitness centers become a lot less crowded by the end of February! People tend to go back to their old ways. Your Foothills Chapter, however, will continue to offer first-rate educational programs including monthly Professional Development Meetings and the opportunity to network with other professionals. We are only halfway through our Chapter year and we can promise more of that in 2019!

First, we will join the accountants of the Catawba Valley Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants for our annual joint Professional Development Meeting on January 17th. As most of you know, supply chain management and finance professionals work very closely together, particularly in smaller companies. Why not invite a finance professional from your organization to this joint meeting! The topic of international

tariffs is in the news a lot lately and the finance people are as interested as we are in what our speaker will talk about.

Second, if one of your resolutions for 2019 is to study for the CPIM professional certification we can help you there too. Look for the flyer in this newsletter announcing our CPIM Part 2 review course starting this month. Dave Lehman, APICS Recognized Master Instructor, will again be facilitating this class for us. Dave is commuting from Greensboro to teach this class on Tuesday evenings and we are very fortunate to have him. Registration deadlines are coming up soon, so act now!

Finally, if you’ve given any thought to taking a more active role in our Chapter’s leadership, 2019 might be your year. Let me or anyone on the board of directors know of your interest and we can find a place for you. Chapter leadership can contribute to your professional and personal development and doesn’t look bad on a resume either. Though, we are very fortunate to have some long-time board members, we need to keep bringing on folks to keep the thinking fresh and to assure the survival of our chapter. Nominations for the 2019-2020 chapter year will be coming up soon, so give it some thought.

Whatever you have resolved for 2019, plan on attending more of our APICS programs and take advantage of the opportunity to meet your peer professionals who can enhance your career. Good things can come of it.

We look forward to seeing more of you in 2019!

-Mike Gahagan, President

January Program

This month’s presentation will explain how President Trump’s tariff increases in China are affecting Lowe’s International Supply Chain. It will also explain why President Trump wants to increase the tariffs and what is happening in China and other countries as a result. The economic result of these tariffs for Lowe’s and the consumer and how it will impact us will be discussed.

Laura Brewer is an International Transportation Specialist at Lowe’s Hardware. She is responsible for the management of Lowe’s 3rd Party Logistics Partners, specifically in the North China region. Mrs. Brewer compiles and analyzes data to evaluate KPI points. Mrs. Brewer also collaborates with diverse groups of partners overseas to direct and provide leadership towards identifying and resolving the root cause of complex supply chain issues affecting Lowe's international business units. Issues include data integrity problems, tariff topics, purchase order issues, and other common anomalies. Mrs. Brewer started with Lowe’s Hardware in May of 2016.

Before beginning her career at Lowe’s Hardware, Mrs. Brewer worked at Merchant’s Distributors Inc., located in Hickory, NC. During her 20 years there, she worked in almost every department, with 13 years in domestic transportation. There she performed systems analysis, implementation of the system as recommended by her analysis, the

execution, and training for over 300 truck drivers.

Mrs. Brewer is an Appalachian Alum and holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Data Analytics as well as a Bachelor of Science Business Administration majoring in Computer Information Systems. She also minored in Supply Chain Management.

In Mrs. Brewer’s spare time, she enjoys playing with her rescue dog, Vegas. She also plays in a rock-n-roll band with her husband and long-time friend, Wade. The band name is Home Brewed as they started playing at home and her last name is Brewer. She resides in Lenoir, NC.

ASCM – What’s it all about?

In October at the 2018 APICS Conference in Chicago, APICS announced the launch of ASCM, Association for Supply Chain Management. The new organization is more than a re-branding of APICS, but an organization focused on “end-to-end supply chain management” and “a global operating environment”, according to ASCM CEO, Abe Eshkenazi.  Digital technology, Augmented Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Blockchain, Virtual Reality and more are at the fore front of today’s supply chain.  ASCM is working with leading organizations around the world to offer a truly end-to-end supply chain education and certification experience for both the individual and corporations. ASCM’s new broader offerings will include supply chain transformation, innovation and leadership development in addition to the existing APICS CPIM, CSCP and CLTD certifications. So, what does all this mean? on January 22, 2019, all APICS memberships will automatically transition to ASCM memberships. Communications have been sent to all members letting them know about the transition, so check your in-box!  And be on the lookout for continued

updates as the transition takes place.  You will be receiving a member kit with a new member card and information about ASCM early next year.  No action is needed on your part.  All original join dates and expiration dates will remain the same, as will all current member benefits. Membership Transition Webinars will be held on December 11 at 9:00 a.m. CT and 3:00 p.m. CT with recorded versions made available shortly thereafter. APICS is here to stay and here to grow with over 60 years of world class educational content and certifications.  APICS chapters will continue to exist and thrive, serving as one of the primary cornerstones of ACSM.  Foothills will remain committed to serving the surrounding local area with high quality speakers and relevant topics.  We will continue to offer APICS certification classes to expand your supply chain knowledge and provide a wealth of networking opportunities as we always have.
