    Notes from the FMP Staff...

The days of free parking at major, outdoor events at theNevada County Fairgrounds are over. In the past onlythree fairgrounds sponsored events had charged park-

ing fees: the Nevada County Fair, Draft Horse Classic, andCountry Faire Christmas. Due to decliningrevenues and the need to upgrade a deterio-rating infrastructure, a $5.00 parking fee isnow in effect for all vehicles at large outdoor

events, such as Music in the Mountains. Thenew parking fee is not the idea of local fair-ground officials but the State of California(17th District Agricultural Association) which owns andoperates the facility. Basically, the States money problem isalso the Nevada County Fairgrounds money problem. Fulltime employees also take part in the States monthly threefurlough days which are scheduled so as not to occur duringfairground events.

The Nevada County Relay for Life is coming up quickly. Thisyears 24-hour event begins at 10:00am onSaturday, May 24th at the Nevada CountyFairgrounds. They are still looking for teamsor individuals looking to join a team. Greatcause, but also a great time! Call Rona at 272-5378 for information.

Sometimes our elected officials do listen to us common folk.Congratulations to all the volunteers who helped save the

Empire Mine State Parkfrom being closed due to the Statesbudget woes. According to apress release from The NevadaCounty Economic ResourceCouncil (ERC), in March thegroup received an inauguralState Parks GrassrootsChampion Award from theCalifornia State ParksFoundation for its efforts to pro-tect and advocate for Californias state parks in 2009. The vol-unteer efforts resulted in a total of 7,244 signatures gatheredand delivered to Governor Schwarzenegger, California StateSenator Sam Aanestad, and California Assemblyman DanLogue in Sacramento just five days before the State budgetwas signed. To learn more about the work of the NevadaCounty ERC visit their web site at www.ncerc.org.Speaking of the Empire Mine, their Annual Spring Time atthe Empire Mine event is happening on Saturday, May 8th.See page 10 for more details. Bring your camera as the gar-dens should be in full bloom.

The Friends of HospicePave the Way campaignis still in progress. For a$100.00 donation a pavingbrick is etched with thename designated by thedonor. The paving bricksline the entry way to theHospice facility located offRough and Ready Highwayin Grass Valley. These

pavers are a lasting reminder of not only those we love butalso of celebrations and accomplishments. They are heart-warming messages and remembrances and a wonderful wayto support a very worthy group of volunteers. For furtherinformation or questions please call Suzanne Reese, 530-432-3689.

The next Foothills Marketplace will be making its way toyour mailbox on May 27th. Hope all our April showersbring you great May flowers!

the U.S. Department of Transportation. As this traveltrend is expected to continue, it is essential thatdrivers take the proper steps to help their vehicles

remain durable and to get the most from what maybe their second largest investment.

My entire career has been about keeping cars run-ning strong in some of the most severe conditions, says Alan Gustafson, crew chief of veteran NASCARdriver Mark Martins No. 5 car. Making your vehiclelast is more important than ever these days.Gustafson recommends a few simple checklist items

to help keep your car running at optimal perform-ance:

Motor oil is a must: Drivers need to protect theirvehicles with a quality motor oil to endure the vary-ing temperatures as we experience. The changing of

Make a date to inflate:As the weather gets warmerand temperatures increase, tire pressure changes.Under-inflated tires reduce a vehicles fuel efficiencyby an average of 3.3 percent, according to

www.fueleconomy.gov. Tires should be checkedmonthly to make sure that they are inflated to man-ufacturers recommendations, which can typicallybe found on the vehicle door placard or in the glovebox.

Clean your fuel system: Many drivers use a fuel sys-tem cleaner as gunk and deposits collect in the fuel
