The purpose of the Knoxville TrackClub is to promote physical fit-ness. One way to achieve this

goal is to serve the Greater Knoxvillepopulation through community initiatives. We are hosting the Eighth Annual Cov-enant Health Knoxville Marathon in lessthan five weeks. It has been almost eightyears since the inaugural marathon. Whatbegan as a little community race hasgrown to a large regional marathon. Somany segments of the Knoxville commu-nity are involved in making the marathona growing success. As many of usprepare to run or walk in this great event,I am mindful that there is room for more

of the community to participate in thisgreat event.

The KTC has over 1900 memberswalking and running members. Withover 400,000 citizens in Knox County,we have a special opportunity to promotephysical fitness to the entire community.Much of our membership is based onhow we promote fitness to the commu-nity. This is a great time to share our joyof running and walking with the EastTennessee community.

Healthy living, healthy community, one step at a time is the vision of the

Knoxville TrackClub. This vi-sion directsmuch of our ac-tivity as an or-ganization. Toachieve this vi-sion, many components are necessaryto make this vision a daily reality.Good governance is one component. In the next few months I will share withyou, some of the good governanceissues need we the Board of Director’sof the Club will address to enable theClub to realize its vision. I look takingmore steps with you.

“THERE’S A“THERE’S A“THERE’S A“THERE’S A“THERE’S ABIG DIFFERENCE”BIG DIFFERENCE”BIG DIFFERENCE”BIG DIFFERENCE”BIG DIFFERENCE”

KristyKristyKristyKristyKristyHealthy living, healthycommunity – one step at a time

I have just opened the bi-monthlymembership report for KTC. Since Ibecame Managing Director three

years ago, this is the first timethat our membership is over1900. The goal is 2000 by theend of the summer. Member-ship totally pays for itself butof course you already knowthat since you are a currentKTC Member! But,please make sure totell your friends andother runners in thecommunity. They maynot know that they are missing out.

There is a lot happening this year. When you read this, we’ll be kicking offour KnoxWalks program and then ourRunKNOX program. I am so excitedabout both programs.

KnoxWalks is a walker specific pro-gram that will be 9 weeks in length.Participants will meet weekly at variouslocations in Knoxville and Oak Ridge. The program will end on May 5 with afinal non-competitive 5K. Participantswill receive goodies and motivation alongthe way. The program is open to every-one in the community and we hope tomeet a lot of new people. Please tell yourfriends, co-workers, and family.

RunKNOX is also open to the com-munity and KTC Members receive a10% discount on program fees. DarrenBrown, Program Coordinator and HeadCoach, will have more details in his articlein this issue of Footnotes. RunKNOX isgoing to be a great way to get faster, runlonger, and achieve your goal under theguidance of a coach while running withfriends. Yes, you may look at the entryfee and wonder about the cost. Cost is$200 for RunEXPO and $250 for 13.RUNor 26.DO-IT. When you average the

cost to the length of the program, it is$15-$16 per week. And, it is less than

joining a gym and certainlyless than hiring a personaltrainer at that gym.RunKNOX is going to pro-vide 2 2 2 2 2 (yes, 2!) supportedworkouts per week whichmeans that your coach willbe onsite. Coaches will prep

you for your run, putwater on the course, give you a route map,and then guide youthrough stretching

when the run is over. You’ll receive atraining schedule and your coach andDarren will be available to help you alongthe way so that you achieve your goal.

Our races this year have been goingwell. Our participation numbers are upand we are learning a lot from the postrace surveys that help us plan for thefuture. The Covenant Health KnoxvilleMarathon is around the corner and sup-plies are starting to roll in. We have a newUPS driver and he thought I was kiddingwhen I told him last week that we’ll beseeing him often.

The KTC EXPO 10K and 5K is 35years old in 2012. Our Race Director,Michael Holtz, is bringing some freshnew ideas and planning is underway.Speaking of Race Directors, we have aFABULOUS group of volunteer RaceDirectors this year. Big thanks to EddieReymond, Susan Rutherford, Jill Bedford,Larry Brede, and Bobby Holcombe forkicking the year off with our first races. We look forward to seeing the work ofRon McElhaney, Donna Terzak, KelseyGodfrey, Michael Holtz, Ray Wilson,Doug Young, John LeCroy, Joe Jackson,David Morris, Chris Morris, LauraHoward, Jason Altman, Pam Haggard, and Mike Wortley in the coming months.

KTC celebrates 50 years this year. This organization has a long, rich historyand a bright future. We’ll have a speciallogo to celebrate the year and we’ll befinding ways to celebrate at our races andevents. After 50 years, we are still look-ing forward. I, the Board of Directors, the Race Directors, the Long DistanceCommittee, the rest of our ProgramDirectors and volunteers are all lookingforward.

In Spring, a young man’s fancy turnsto thoughts of love, wildflowers, andtraining for fast 5k races, not neces-

sarily in that order. This time of yearalways imparts a new sense of hope, ofpossibility, of renewal. It has been thatway since time immemorial, or at leastfor the 63 springs my crooked feet havetrod this celestial ball of clay and granite.

For runners, it’s time to put away thegloves, the long-sleeve tech tees, thewater-resistant shells, along with non-running items like down vests, over-coats, and wool suits.

For many years, I’ve only donned suitsonce or twice a year, usually at weddings, formal dinners, or conventions.

Unfortunately another occasion be-gins to more frequently demand my ap-pearance in relative sartorial splendor. The funeral. Sadly, as years pass, weattend more funerals than weddings. Farmore certain even than an April tax bill,

the end of life lurks in the path of each ofus. Some fall quietly, like a leaf falling tothe forest floor in late November. Othersmake far more noise, their passingwrenching from us a wince and a gri-mace. But then, as timepasses, an abiding sad-ness mixes with satis-fying memories that liveon past the sadness.

Such a passing oc-curred on January 12when longtime KTCmember Walter Collinspassed away at the ageof 94. A fixture at KTCevents for more thantwenty years, Walterran more than 640 racessince beginning at age 60, including anine-year string of 40+ races per yearwhile aged 74 thru 83. Local runnershonored him by proclaiming a spring racein Kingston, The Walter Collins 5K RoadRace. His smile, humor, charm, gener-

osity, and kindness will be missed by sovery many. He was an inspiration tomany people of all ages.

No one will forget the broad smile thatcreased his handsome face as he raisedhis hands over his head upon acceptanceof yet another age group award at yetanother race. He brought with him toevery event a healthy dose of charm, wit,and good humor. He will be sorelymissed.

But there’s last minute good news toshare. Veteran KTC marathoner AlGassel of Farragut, who suffered a heart

attack at the MyrtleBeach Marathon, hasrecovered from hisordeal and returnedhome. Chicago Al isthe guy who got meback to running in thevery late 1980s. I’mglad to report that hewill be pounding thepavement again soon.

Another runnerfriend, Steve Novelliand his wife Whitney,

just celebrated the birth of their firstchild, Layna Ann, who probably will runher first 5k in 2024 or thereabouts.

Endings and beginnings. Since timeimmemorial.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUTKTC TEAM COMPETITION

There will once again be a multi-tiered award system of valuable KTC gear given to those who worked either a minimum offive or a minimum of twelve events. Qualifying events include road races, track meets, adopt-a-highway, Treadin’ TroddenTrails Series races, and youth athletics program events.

This year we have made sig-nificant changes to the way teamssign up for KTC events in the

hopes of making it more accessible toeveryone. So far so good, but I still hearsome questions about the team competi-tion. Here are my top three questionsand their answers.

Should I start a team?

This is an easy one: do you run a lot ofKTC races, and do you have at least 3friends who run the same races you do?Then forming a team will save you money! It’s as easy as that.

How do I start a team?

STEP 1 - GATHER YOUR TEAMSTEP 1 - GATHER YOUR TEAMSTEP 1 - GATHER YOUR TEAMSTEP 1 - GATHER YOUR TEAMSTEP 1 - GATHER YOUR TEAMINFORMATION.INFORMATION.INFORMATION.INFORMATION.INFORMATION. That’s basicallythe same information you would fill outon a race entry form: name, address, e-mail address, and t-shirt size. You’llwant to have this all together when yousign-up online.

STEP 2 – SIGN-UP YOUR TEAMSTEP 2 – SIGN-UP YOUR TEAMSTEP 2 – SIGN-UP YOUR TEAMSTEP 2 – SIGN-UP YOUR TEAMSTEP 2 – SIGN-UP YOUR TEAMONLINE.ONLINE.ONLINE.ONLINE.ONLINE. Go to http://ktc.org/GpAboutTeam.html and select the “clickhere to sign up” link.

The first question you’ll have to makeis whether you want to create an openteam (which is the division with norestrictions on team members), a co-edteam (which must have at least twowomen in each race in order to get a teamscore), or a women’s team (minimumthree members, all of whom are women.)

I’ve been asked several times what thedifference was between an open teamand a co-ed team. To some extent, it’sjust a choice you make. If you have somefast women on your team (va-va-voom!)you might get a competitive advantage inthe co-ed division, but remember youmust have at least two women to get ateam score.

After choosing a division, you’ll beasked for your team name (the more flairthe better!) and to indicate in which racesyour team might participate. Your an-swers to the latter question are not bind-ing – they are just for planning purposes.

Next you enter your team members’information. After that you’ll go to a“payment” screen (which looks like youare being charged money, but you are infact being charged $0.00.) Once youfinish with the “payment”, you’re done!

STEP 3 – ENTER YOUR TEAMSTEP 3 – ENTER YOUR TEAMSTEP 3 – ENTER YOUR TEAMSTEP 3 – ENTER YOUR TEAMSTEP 3 – ENTER YOUR TEAMIN A RACE.IN A RACE.IN A RACE.IN A RACE.IN A RACE. Three weeks before eachteam race, the team captains will receivean e-mail with the team registration priceand the deadline to enter the race. All youhave to do is contact your teammates, seewho is going to run, and e-mail me backwith a list of who is running. Then youcan either mail in a check for your teamsregistration fee or bring it to the race. You don’t need to fill out any more forms.

What if I run a lot of races, butdon’t want to be the one starting

a team?

Team captains can add people to theiranytime by going back to http://ktc.org/GpAboutTeam.html , clicking the “clickhere to sign up” link, and selecting man-age my team. If you have friends who arealready on a team, ask their team captainif you can join.

And as always, if you have questionsor comments, feel free to e-mail me [email protected]. You canalso try contacting me on Twitter at@WebbCoachMike, but no guaranteethat I’ll be able to figure out how torespond to you. I’m a bit of a noob…

Eating Well on Race DayWhen You’re Away From Home

by Lee MurphyMS-MPH, RD, LDN

Licensed Nutritionist

We all know nutrition plays ahuge role in sports perfor-mance, right? But as impor-

tant as healthy and clean eating is through-out our training, many times we focusparticularly on our diet the day/s beforeour events. The food you eat the day ofyour event (as well as the days prior!) isimperative. However, if your event is outof town, it can be difficult to find healthyand familiar foods.

After spending time and energy deter-mining the foods that work best for youthe day of a long and/or important run,you are suddenly left to fend for yourselfwhen you travel and are away from yourcozy kitchen and familiar grocery andrestaurants. However, with some plan-ning and an open mind, the challenge offinding healthy food on the road can beeasily overcome.

The most important thing to remem-ber when eating away from home is tostick with foods you havesuccessfully utilized in yourtraining. Event day is notthe time to try new foods.Even if the food is not newto you, if you haven’t eatenit in conjunction with train-ing, you do not know ex-actly how it will affect you. However, sticking to thesame foods while on theroad is easier said than done, especially ifyou are in a setting where you are unfa-miliar with the stores and restaurants.

Next time you travel for an event, trythe following tips to help you eat andperform well while away from home:

Make eating a priorityMake eating a priorityMake eating a priorityMake eating a priorityMake eating a priorityWhen you are driving or flying, don’t getcaught up in the hustle and forget to eat.Make sure you always have somethingto snack on and do not skip meals just soyou make good time to your destination. Some healthy snack ideas include trailmix, nuts, “clean” nutrition bars, fruit, and cut vegetables.

¨ Drink, drink, drink…WATER! Drink, drink, drink…WATER! Drink, drink, drink…WATER! Drink, drink, drink…WATER! Drink, drink, drink…WATER!Many times while traveling, we eitherforget our hydration protocol, orwe don’t want to drink too muchbecause the consequence is hav-ing to stop for more bathroombreaks. However, adequate hy-dration is one of the most impor-tant preparations you need beforean event or race. Therefore, keepa full bottle of water with youthroughout the day(s) before theevent and make sure that your urine staysclear as an indicator of fluid adequacy. This is especially important if you areflying to your destination or if your eventlocation is at a higher altitude than where

you live—as an increase inaltitude can contribute todehydration.

Eat often—butEat often—butEat often—butEat often—butEat often—butnot too much. not too much. not too much. not too much. not too much. The daybefore a race, frequent smallmeals are best; however, when you are away fromhome and eating mostly atrestaurants, this can be dif-

ficult. Split your meals and save some forlater or share with a friend, but avoidovereating at all costs.

¨ Avoid too much fat. Avoid too much fat. Avoid too much fat. Avoid too much fat. Avoid too much fat. Don’torder foods that are high in fat. If you arenot used to eating a high-fat diet, these

foods can upset your stomach/intestines.For example avoid foods on menus withwords that are typically associated withfatty preparation methods—including“fried”, “sautéed”, “crispy”, “braised”,“cream sauce”, “rich”, “breaded”, etc.

Use the amenities. Use the amenities. Use the amenities. Use the amenities. Use the amenities. Try bookinga hotel room with a small refrigerator orrent a condo that has a kitchen. This maymean spending more on a room, butcould save you money by allowing food

preparation in your room.

¨ Bring as much from Bring as much from Bring as much from Bring as much from Bring as much fromhome as possiblehome as possiblehome as possiblehome as possiblehome as possible. If you areaccustomed to eating steel-cutoatmeal with raisins before arace, bring it from home. If youare used to eating Ezekiel Breadwith peanut butter, bring themfrom home. If it will be difficult

to bring food, make some time to explorethe local grocery store when you get toyour destination, or look online into thelocal grocery stores and restaurants in thearea you will be staying before you go.

In summary, remember that planningis critical. You want to stick to a routineas much as possible. Would you wear abrand-new pair of shoes on race day?No, because you don’t know how theywill affect you. The same goes for food.Stick to the foods that you’ve trained withor you might end up with side effectsmuch worse than blisters!

Happy eating and good luck this sea-son!

A letter from RunKNOX Head Coach andProgram Director Darren Brown

Hey Y’all,

While the point of this article is to present the RunKNOX programs to you, I feel it is necessary to first know aprogram’s roots in order to know its purpose. That being said, I think it is important that you all know me in orderto understand my hopes for RunKNOX and the Knoxville running community as a whole.

Many of you have already met me or “run” (pun intended) across me at some point in time on the roads, trails andgreenways, but let me start by introducing myself and giving you a little background on who I am.

My name is Darren Brown and I am a professional runner living here in Knoxville, TN with my beautiful fiancé,and also professional runner, Sarah Bowman. I recently moved to the Knoxville area a year ago after spending 7 yearsin Austin, TX, first, as an All-American Student Athlete for the University of Texas (the other UT to most of you)and secondly as a post-collegiate athlete and high performance coach for Rogue Running.

Before relocating a year ago, I spent quite a bit of time in Knoxville, visiting my now-fiancé. While here, I took noticeof the great infrastructure of trails and greenways, as well as the large running population and race participationnumbers. What I didn’t find though, was a direct way to engage and work with those individuals the way I had inAustin, where I felt part of a community, a family. So that became my purpose here, and with the help of the KTC,it has become a reality.

Through the RunKNOX programs, I hope to help build a bonded community of runners who achieve personalsuccess and individual greatness through the support of peers and the guidance of experienced coaches. So whetheryou are attempting to run your 1st marathon, your fastest 5k or your FIRST STEP, RunKNOX will provide you withthe knowledge, guidance and support to do so. Through our group practices, social events and free classes/seminars,you will have the opportunity to learn from some of Knoxville’s most experienced running coaches and become a partof the RunKNOX Community.

Check out KTC.org/RunKNOX for more information on current program offers. I can’t wait to get to know, gofor a run and work with each and every one of you because together …

We RunKNOX!!!

GILDEA’s BRIEF CHATPatrick Gildea, elite American distance runner

Bobby GlennVeteran Trailster Back on the Board

m,x m,x m,x m,x m,x continued on page 13 ,cx,cx,cx,cx,cx

This edition of the Footnotes Inter-view is with Bobby Glenn, anindividual who wears several dif-

ferent hats; KTC Board member, BigSouth Fork race director, trail runningenthusiast, father and coach, and presi-dent of Becromal of America, Inc. Bobbyhas been race director for Big South Forkfor 17 of 18 years and will again direct theevent in 2012. He is all Knoxville, bornand raised. He graduated from Centraland went on to run for Stan Huntman’sTennessee Volunteers from 1979 thru1981. In the interview, he recalls thestate championship in 1978 and the inju-ries at UT. I hope everyone enjoysreading the interview, and learning a bitabout this KTC member extraordinaire asmuch as I did.

PG: I am going into the vault for thisone, Bobby. 1978, November 4 specifi-cally, Percy Warner Park in Nashville. You were 16th in the TSSAA in the 15:30and your Knoxville Central squad tookfourth. Do you recall that race?

BG: Wow, you had to dig deep forthat one! I remember that race well butnot in a particularly positive light. I hadhigh hopes going in for a top 5 finish buta stomach flu a few days prior to the meetdid me in. We did have a strong team, though, at Knox Central. Later that year4 of us combined to win state in the 4 X880 in 7:51.6 (about 7:48+ for 4 X800m). We even had a 5th sub 2:00 minutehalf miler who couldn’t make the team!

PG: That’s a solid squad back in theday! You ran for UT, back in the day, what was that like? I have Coach Watts’and Marty’s perspective, which I ad-mire, and it’s always good to haveanother point of view.

BG: I ran for UT from the fall of ’79thru the fall of ’81 under Stan Huntsman.I was a walk-on (Stan told me on my visitto enjoy the lunch since that was prob-ably the only money I’d get at UT!:-)) butit was a great experience for me. At thetime I figured I’d rather walk-on and tryto make it at a greatprogram like UTthan take a scholar-ship somewheresmaller. It didn’twork out greatthough, because Iwas almost con-stantly injuredmissing half myfreshman year andalmost all mysophomore year. Finally when I gothurt again in the fallof my junior year Idecided it was time.Still, I wouldn’ttrade it for anything.

PG: Bobby, letsfast forward to Feb-ruary 15, 2012. You are coach at GreshamMiddle, correct?

BG: Yes; it’s where I went to middleschool and where our kids went (okay, itwas junior high back in those days whenI was there).

PG: How long have you been coach-ing at Gresham?

BG: We just finished our 3rd season.Marty asked me if I was interested backin 2009 and we pretty much started fromscratch since there hadn’t been a programthere in recent years.

PG: Your professional life; what doyou do from 9-5?

BG: I’m the president of Becromal ofAmerica, Inc. in Clinton. We form foil foruse in aluminum electrolytic capacitorsand are the US affiliate of BecromalS.p.A. based in Milan, Italy.

PG: Bobby, you have served on theKTC board in the past, a member of thetrail committee, been the race director forBig South Fork and recently appointed tothe Board of Directors. How did youinitially become involved with the Knox-ville Track Club?

BG: I go way back with the track club. When I was in high school back in the70s I ran road races that the club put onout at Cherokee Boulevard (in those daysthat’s all there was, and Hal Canfield and

his wife pretty muchput the races on bythemselves; I re-member runningboth a 20K and a30K, all on the bou-levard). I also ran inwhat was the equiva-lent of the summeryouth program thatthe track club put onin those days.

PG: Wow...a 30kon Cherokee. A longtime ago, perhapswhen Dinosaurs ex-isted, you were thecompetitive team di-rector, site director,et cetera. The foun-dation had been laid

for the youth group that Marty has devel-oped into the massive entity it is today;what was it like back when you wereassisting with the charge?

BG: I started out as a site director forthe summer youth program heading upsites at Central and Gibbs back in the late80s after I moved back to Knoxville. Afew years later Marty asked me to takethe competitive team director positionand I was stupid enough to say yes! Forthose who have done it and continue todo it, hats off; it’s a lot of work. It was

fantastic, though, and I enjoyed it a lot. Ithink I did that from 1992 thru 1997.When my second daughter was born in1997, I decided it was time to back out.

PG: OK, Bobby, here is the randomportion of the interview and frankly, myfavorite aspect of it. Training shoe orchoice, or because you have to wear it?

BG: In recent years (10+) I’ve been anASICS man. They seem to work wellwith my feet and accommodate myorthotics well.

PG: Stick with what works. Favoriteband or musical genre?

BG: I’m pretty old school; Neil Young,

Crosby Stills and Nash; My favorite isBruce Cockburn a Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist.

PG: Old school never goes out ofstyle. Favorite race other than Big SouthFork?

BG: Although I haven’t run it in recentyears, Expo. At one point I had a streakof 11 straight top 10 finishes (file thatunder statistics nobody cares about...).

PG: Regardless of whether anyonecares or not, still a pretty neat streak youhad going there. The PR you are mostproud of?

BG: Its pretty humble, but the 15:025K I ran at Dogwood Relays around1990; of course I kicked myself for notgetting under...; but at least I know thecourse wasn’t short!

PG: And, on to the encore... What’s

up next for Bobby Glenn? Middle schoolcross country? Big South Fork in Sep-tember?

BG: I really love the off-road sceneso I’ll continue with Cross Country atGresham. We’re trying to build thatprogram and start feeding kids intoCentral so that we can see the programthere develop. I picked up an extra raceon our trail series that we did lastweekend (Dark Hollow Wallow at BigRidge) and that was fun. I’ll be direct-ing a 5K for our high school PTSO inAugust and will direct Big South Forkfor the 19th year come September.Hoping to get/stay healthy and do alittle running too.

PG: Well, all the folks that I knowwho have run Big South Fork rave aboutwhat a great event it is — across theboard. Keep up the great work, and thankyou for all that you contribute to Knox-ville running community.

Off to a Rollickin’ Start

m,x m,x m,x m,x m,x continued on page 15 ,cx,cx,cx,cx,cx

It’s amazing to see the continuedgrowth of trail running. Or is it?After all, everyone who gravitates

toward trail running quickly understandsthe appeal. Maybe a better word wouldbe gratifying. And without a doubt, seeing 240 folks show up for the first raceof the 2012 Treadin’ Trodden TrailsOffroad Running Series went way be-yond gratifying; it absolutelyblew the minds of everyoneinvolved.

Did I say 240? Sure did.Fully doubling the turnout forany previous series race in theeight years of its existence (andnearly equaling the total num-ber of runners in the ENTIRE 2005 trailseason), the Wanderers’ Trail Race washeld on January 22 on the slippery woodedslopes behind Maryville College. Thehuge crowd took to the woods like kidsat play on an unseasonbly mild Sundayafternoon. Gleeful whoops and shoutsresounded through the hollow as the racewent on, participants slipping and slidingup and down the winding singletrack. One particularly enjoyable stretch of slickdownhill ended with an unavoidable splashthrough a knee-high creek that hadn’tbeen there a day earlier. At the finish line, where I was prepared to catch grief fromrunners who’d turned new shoes intomud-splattered unrecognizable brownthings, I instead heard nothing but ex-pressions of surprised delight.

The only downside of such a hugeturnout was that we nearly exhaustedwhat we’d estimated as half our yearlysupply of shirts and had to reorder for thevery next race. Virtually every speck offood and drink vanished down the hun-gry, thirsty gullets of the happy throng, leaving our cleanup crew, led by first time

RD Kathy Smith, staggering around mut-tering, “What just happened?”

Three weeks later, we reassembledhalf an hour north of Knoxville at thelargely unknown confines of Big RidgeState Park for the season’s second get-together, the Dark Hollow Wallow.Veteran trail race director Bobby Glenn,

who’s staged eighteen wildlysuccessful races up at Big SouthFork, used his experience andcreativity well, laying out acourse nearly eleven miles long, peppered with a startling mix-ture of runnable singletrack androller coaster hills with a barelywalkable briarpatch and one

hill so steep that it required some runnersto ascend hand over hand.

Once again we were blessed withstunning winter weather, a cloudless skyof deep azure and temperatures coldenough that areas of the trail that had notreceived direct sunshine lay frozen fromthe overnight chill. Staunch support wasprovided by park rangers, who usedhorses to help us get water out onto thedemanding course and who stood readyand able to offer any medical help thatmight have been needed. As it turnedout, the only setback was suffered by afemale runner, who twisted an anklebarely a minute into the race. The rang-ers also built a warming fire in a hugestone fireplace in the pavilion, and run-ners huddled gratefully around it bothbefore and after the race. And while ourturnout of 75 runners didn’t approach thestunning numbers of our series opener,we were tickled that a substantial numberof trailsters made the trip north to spendthe afternoon with us, most of whomdeclared without question they’d be backthe next time we held a race on the

winding trails at Big Ridge.

Our next race will be held on Sunday,March 18, as we reprise last year’s serieskickoff by traipsing up and down thespiny ridgetop at Haw Ridge Park for theWild West Ridge Run, this year to bedirected by another first time race direc-tor, Jerry Monroe. The course stacks upto be something either side of sevenmiles, starting with a relatively easy firstmile or two circling around the south-west point of the peninsula before return-ing to the Lake Trail and making the firstclimb up the ridge. As at all our races, aidstations will dot the course, the first ofwhich will greet runners at the top of thefirst big ascent. Three more water stopsawait as the field makes their way up,down, and around the wild and woolytrails of Haw, eventually following theseemingly unending procession of coursemarkings back down to where it allbegan. Fun times are guaranteed for all.

And over the next several months,we’re looking forward to staging the bestseries of trail races we’ve ever offered.Following the Wild West race in March,we’ll put on two races in April. The firstwill occur on Easter Sunday afternoon, starting at two o’clock at I.C. King Parkon Alcoa Highway about four miles southof UT Hospital. It is one of our favoritevenues, one so well-liked that we ranthere twice a few years ago, once clock-wise and once counter-clockwise start-ing in the other parking lot. For thisyear’s race, we will use the parking lotthat is closed 364 days a year. Becauseparking is limited and the access road isnarrow and tortuous and covered in slickmoss, we limit the field to 100 andstrongly urge particpants to car pool.

The totally singletrack race courseitself is a rewarding mix of long uphillsand fast downhills, with an exhilaratingstretch of rhythmic semi-straightawayalong the lake on the far side of the bridge.Postrace festivities will include the usualfood, drinks, and silliness, and race direc-tor Tony Owens will likely have a fewsurprises ready, as well. Don’t miss theI.C. King of Trails Race on April 8.

Just three weeks hence, another funvenue awaits as we tackle the Forks of

Follow the rules of the road - travel on the right andpass on the left.

Don’t run down the middle of the trail. Run to theright side to allow others to pass safely.

Don’t wear headphones – but if you insist on goingagainst this RRCA and common-sense safety guideline, keep the volume low or only wear one headphone.

If you are running an out-and-back route on a trail, don’t just make a sudden u-turn at your turn aroundpoint. Stop, step to the right to allow oncoming traffic theopportunity to pass. Ensure the trail is clear of oncomingtraffic (runners, cyclists, in-line skaters, etc.) then makeyour u-turn. Making a sudden u-turn without lookingover your shoulder is a good way to get hit by anoncoming cyclist or skater.

Avoid running on trails in the evening if they are notwell lit and do not have regular traffic.

Never run more than two abreast if you are running ina group. Don’t be a trail hog. While pedestrians have the

right of way on most trails, the goal is to share the trails.

Alert people when you are passing them – don’tassume they are aware of their surroundings. A simple“on your left” warning will suffice.

Be alert on blind curves.

Stop at stop signs if the trail crosses a roadway. Don’tassume cars on the road will stop for the trail crossing.

Be mindful of young children on the trail – theirmovements can be unpredictable. Slowing the pace a bitwhen you pass small children on the trail is a wise idea.Use this as an opportunity to slow the pace then pick upthe tempo.

Respect private property along the trail.

Don’t litter. If you can’t find a trash can, carry yourtrash home.

Get approval from local authorities before planning arace or training event on your local multi-use trail.

TIPS FOR TRAIL RUNNING SAFETYTIPS FOR TRAIL RUNNING SAFETY

2012 TRAIL SCHEDULE2012 TRAIL SCHEDULEthe River Trail Run on Sunday, April 29.One of the easiest (a relative term) raceson our series, Forks offers a blend of soft, mulched trails early on as the field makesits way through the property of IjamsNature Center, where we start and fin-ish. Then, as the course works its wayeast, a mixture of grassy pathways andsingletrack winds around and throughthe Forks of the River Wildlife Manage-ment Area, ultimately circling back toIjams and the finish some six miles away.

In May, we’ll return to Panther CreekState Park up in Morristown, for a ten-mile jaunt through the largely unvisitednorth half of the park. Trails Committeemember and head Park Ranger JohnLeCroy uses his expertise to lay out acourse that both challenges and rewardsthe avid trailster. Participants often campout the night before, making both preraceand postrace activities more relaxed andless demanding.

In June, we’ll return to Ijams andexplore the new and newer trails in theRoss Marble Quarry area southeast ofthe Nature Center. It’s always a blast todiscover what the mountain bikers havebeen up to since our last visit. Don’t missStalk Your Quarry on June 10.

Then, on June 30, we’ll present yetanother new race, the Lakeshore TrailTrek, nine miles of verdant trail thatsnakes along following what used to bethe Little Tennessee River near the Glen-dale Community southeast of Lenoir City.

Midsummer finds us returning to oldhaunts. On July 14, we’ll stage The TrailThat Can’t Be Concord at Concord Parkon Northshore Drive in far west Knox-ville. Los Mexican Fiesta once againtakes center stage on the afternoon ofAugust 3 for the Haw Ridge Trail Race.On the Sunday of Labor Day weekend,Kerry Trammell presents the Norris DamHard Trail Race with your choice of 25 or50k. The Big South Fork 17½ Mile TrailRace takes place on September 29, fol-lowed by the Cumberland Trail 50k onOctober 20, and our last new race for2012, the series finale, the Dirty SouthTrail Half Marathon, on November 10.

And Now For SomethingCompletely Different...

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

FOR ULTIMATE

PERFORMANCE

by Mick Larrabee, P.T.

m,x m,x m,x m,x m,x continued on page 32,cx,cx,cx,cx,cx

Although there is nothing funny tofollow I must thank MontyPython’s Flying Circus for the

wonderfully fitting title to this article.I’ve been writing for Footnotes Footnotes Footnotes Footnotes Footnotes for 11years now and I’ve tried my best toprovide thought provoking, and hope-fully useful, information regardingstrength & conditioning practices forthe running athlete. But this time it’s abit different…it’s personal.

Part I

During this past holiday season myfamily had the wonderful opportunity tospend 3 weeks in Kenya visiting mywife’s parents in Nairobi (where they’velived the past 12 years). Prior to takeoffI said it would be an “epic adventure”because although we’d been to Africabefore we had never taken the entire clanof all five Larrabee’s. Sure there would betough times…but I felt it would be aworthy voyage for all involved and wouldprovide an educational experience be-yond the borders of the classroom inKnoxville. Little did I know exactly howmuch would change with the trip.

For those of you curious as to wherethis is heading – I’ll do my best to tie thisback to running…but I must first tell a bitof a story (excuse me if I go astray).

We were very humbled by the oppor-tunity to experience so much of whatKenya had to offer. Not only did we

celebrate Christmas on a beautiful beach(Turtle Bay - off the coast of Malindi) butwe were able to greet the New Year witha phenomenal safari excursion on thefoothills of Mt Kenya. But it wasn’t justthe things we saw that were so incredibleit was some of the people and what theyare doing with their lives that is the trueinspiration of this article.

Enter Mama Zipporah - a real life“Mother Teresa” in Kenya. In 1989Mama Zipporah opened her doors tosome of the most destituteand orphaned children ofthe Nairobi area. Her goalwas simple - empowerchildren in need to becomeproductive members of so-ciety through rehabilitation, education and self-relianceskills. Over time theproject has grown and thehome that started withseven young kids is nowthe Huruma Children’s Home (http://www.hchngong.org an orphanage of150+ children located in the Ngong hillsabout 25km from Nairobi).

The more time we spent in Kenya themore my boys began to get a deeperunderstanding of just how different thingswere and that life was not the same as weknow it in East Tennessee. This wastime for a good dose of perspective andreflection. Simple things like runningwater and electricity were not to be taken

for granted…not to mention Wii or iPods.Seventy percent of the Kenyan popula-tion lives on less than $1.25/day. Forty-two percent of the 41million Kenyans areunder the age of 14, and every 24 sec-onds a child loses a parent due to AIDS.

To my nine year old, Tyler, this wasa bit overwhelming. As he met withMama Zipporah he learned more abouther mission and quickly asked how hecould help her and the children. Mamatold him of her new project to obtain afew more cows which provide dairyproducts as well as lots of waste (ma-nure) that is converted into fuel to powerthe home through biogas technology.

Upon our return to Knoxville, Tylerinitiated the “Coins for Cows”“Coins for Cows”“Coins for Cows”“Coins for Cows”“Coins for Cows” cam-paign in which interested people are askedto donate their pocket change to help themission of Mama Zipporah and improvethe lives of “her children”. I am pleasedto say that several local “runner-friendly”businesses have been kind enough toallow receptacles on their counters andwe are collecting monies regularly tosend to Mama Zipporah and her chil-dren. Please feel free to contact me (orTyler) with thoughts/ideas on otherways to help.

What does this have to do with run-ning you may ask? Great question! I’m

not sure exactly…it’s notall about running…but Ido know that manypeople associate EastAfrica (and Kenya) withgreat running feats. Ob-viously we have somenotion of the poverty andthe difficulties encounteredday in and day out…butwe also may solely focuson their successes run-

ning on the track and roads.

Let’s look at a few facts…in 2011Kenyan runners occupied all top twentyplaces in the world marathon rankings.Kenyan men won 83 of 100 major mara-thons worldwide. Sixty-seven of the topone hundred all-time fastest marathonshave been provided by Kenyan runners. In addition, one-third of all the top timesin middle-long distance running events

Race weekend will kickoff onSaturday morning with the Health andFitness Expo held at the Knoxville Con-vention and Exhibition Center. This year’sexpo is going to be great. We haveworked on a more streamlined approachfor packet pickup in order to get regis-trants in and out more quickly. We’velined up more vendors than we have everhad in the past, so there will be shoppingand sampling galore. This year’s lineupof speakers has also expanded, so be sure

and check out the marathon website forthe latest list of who is talking and when.

The Covenant Kids Run will be held at6:00 pm on Saturday, March 31. Werecently had more than 500 childrenattend the Covenant KidsKickoff at the Knoxville Zooon a cold, rainy morning. We’re anticipating morethan double that numbercome March 31! We’vehad great support from theKnoxville Area Coalition onChildhood Obesity and Co-ordinated School Health ofTennessee to help get the word out to theschools about our Fittest School Chal-lenge. We will be awarding $2,000 intotal prize money ($250 per winningschool in each county) to eight East

Tennessee elementary schools in thisChallenge. The elementary school thathas the highest percentage of participa-tion from their student body will deemedthe winner for their respective county. For more information about the Cov-

enant Kids Run oron the FittestSchool Challenge, visit our website.

This year’smarathon, halfmarathon, and 4-person relay willstart at 7:30 am on

Sunday, April 1. The 5K will follow witha 7:45 am start time. With registrationnumbers more than 15% ahead of lastyear’s numbers, we are on pace for yetanother record turnout!

We’ve also added a twist to this year’saward ceremonies. We will have the 5Kceremony at Thompson-Boling Arena at9:30 am. New for 2012, we have movedthe award ceremonies for the full, half, and relay to Calhoun’s on the River at 3pm. This will give finishers the opportu-nity to rest, relax, and then reconvenelater in the day for the awards.

Finally, I’d like to mention that we stillneed volunteers! We could use a couplemore groups to help with water stops.Individually, we need folks to help at theGoody Bag Stuffing (March 24), ExpoDay (March 31), and race day. So evenif you are running on Sunday, please lendus a hand before or after the race! Youcan choose your volunteer day, timeslot, and position by registering online on ourwebsite through the volunteer module. Thanks in advance for the help!

BONE DOC 411

Mis-InformationMis-InformationMis-InformationMis-InformationMis-Information

Dr. Brantley BurnsOrthopaedic Surgeon, KTC Member

Maybe it’s harder than I thoughtfor the average runner patientto obtain accurate medical

knowledge. I assumed that in this age of“smart phones” and instant informationat your fingertips that you all would be,well...smarter. Despite the fact that foryears I’ve recognized that the internet ischock full of errors, blather, wrongnessand even lies. That seductress Mis(s)Information, the siren that draws youinto her web of deceit with great graph-ics, whimsical words, and claims of somesuccess, will convince you of certaintreatment merits. And you won’t evenknow what hit you. But you knew this, right? Am I right?

The worse issue is Mis(s) Informa-tion embodied as an authority figure likeyour doctor or physical therapist. Yourfilters and defense mechanisms fail for allbut the most skeptical patients. I knowyou are at a disadvantage here and it’sreally unfortunate.

Example: every day run-ners come to me saying thattheir previous orthopedicsurgeon’s treatment advicewas: to stop running. This israrely necessary.

Example: just last week, agifted runner told me that hisprimary care doctor’s diag-nosis was that his knee Xray showed“bone on bone”, meaning the cartilagepad between the bones had completelydeteriorated. I reviewed that Xray, and itwas COMPLETELY NORMAL.

The only excuse I have for theseproviders is that they either don’t knowthe answers, or can’t be bothered.

Mis(s) Information often appears from

the drive to “name” every condition. Arecent Runners World blog answer bymy favorite target Dr. William Robertsabout cold hands during cold weatherrunning focused mainly on Raynaud’sSyndrome. Although thisrare mostly female condi-tion of blood vessel nar-rowing in response to coldand other stimuli could bethe blogger’s problem, itprobably isn’t. Haven’t weall had some fingers andtoes freak out by turningdeadly cold and white dur-ing a cold run, and thosedigits are fine at othertimes? I have. I don’t have Raynaud’s.Wouldn’t it be better to downplay thenegatives and reassure you that with afew changes, you’ll be OK and not la-beled for life with a disease process?

People want their disorder named anddon’t want success for oth-ers. I think that arriving at aspecific diagnosis sometimesabsolves them of responsi-bility for helping themselvesand thus they deserve oth-ers’ sympathy.

You know how somepeople get a migraine head-ache? This has become syn-onymous with just a very

bad headache, when in reality a migraineis a very specific uncommon headache.

That guy’s knee Xray showed bone onbone. Your cold fingers are Raynaud’s.You can’t run anymore. Your arm numb-ness is due to low sodium from drinkingtoo much during a race. Don’t takeibuprofen before an endurance event oryou’ll get kidney damage. Traditionalrunning shoes actually CAUSE running

injuries, not prevent them. Get a com-plete physical exam prior to embarkingon an exercise/running program. Really?Stop the madness! These are glass-half-empty recommendations with admittedly

a (small) kernel of truth.Very small.

How about this. Let’sfocus on running. Gettingback to running. Let’s dowhatever it takes to put thisbehind us, ignore it,deemphasize an improbablediagnosis, and kick Mis(s)Information to the curb.

“Ask Coach Jenny” in the recent Run-ners World gave lots of suggestions forsomeone with hip arthritis. And none ofthem was “stop running”. You go, girl.

Listen, one of my peers’ sobriquet(nickname) has to do with steering pa-tients towards surgery, no matter what.I almost agree with him (gag) if thealternative is NO RUNNING.

You think formal physical therapy is awaste? Don’t want to try prescriptionmedications, or cross-training or corti-sone injection or viscosupplementationor the Alter-G, or Eddie’s supplements orhyperbaric, or weight loss or shoe changesor orthotics (gasp), or cryotherapy or theStrassburg sock, or tissue massage? Yourloss.

Any time surgery is recommended, you can get (and I humbly offer) a secondopinion. It matters. Besides, surgery maybe your best option.

Steer clear of Mis(s) Information. She’spersuasive. Never give up. Run.

Be careful out there.

So usually when we watch a race, wefocus on the battle for first place. Will the usual winner triumph? Will

the underdog succeed in crushing Goliath?Who would ever pay attention to little oldme vying for 247th place in the field of309? Unless of course, you were lookingfor exceptionally supportive clapping orcheering for fellow runner friends. Thatall changed, the day I got called out.

Here’s how it started. I’m peacefullywatching the UT Men’s basketball gamewith my fellow Wednesday night runners, when I hear the following: “Hey Lauren, guess what? Nicole has just named you hernew running nemesis.”

What? Me, a running nemesis? Nah,shouldn’t it be a more intimidating person?Perhaps, a person with PR’s that sheremembers instead of guestimating or aperson that actually logs her miles in some-thing other than a non-downloaded Garminwatch or a runner with a single matching

running outfit be more preferable. Now,there I sat, with a target on my back and aStrawberry Plains half-marathon that I wascalling a training run ahead of me. The battlefor 2 hours and 20 minutes had begun.

“Lauren, how did you cope with thestress?”, you ask. Well, I decided toapproach it like my first time snow skiing.Just tuck, and point both feet down the hilland go, knowing I could just fall at the end.And then I started a Facebook tauntingmatch. Funny thing was, people got into it.Suddenly there was a personal intereststory in the back of the pack. We had ablast with our pre-race photo session (withfists in the air). The race started and I hadno idea if Nicole was ahead or behind me,but the thrill of the contest kept my pace andmind in the race. When I’d pass mutualfriends, I got a lot more encouragement, asthey knew the contest was ongoing. Fi-nally, someone let the cat out of the bag, Iwas ahead. But I couldn’t give up then. Sheprobably had paced herself better. My legs

wouldn’t last. I hadn’t trained well. I ateway too much chocolate the night beforeunder the guise of carbo loading.

Finally we finished. I won’t tell you whowon. Truthfully, I think we both benefited.I wouldn’t have gotten my PR withoutNicole. I think a running nemesis was justwhat the doctor ordered and I highly rec-ommend it. So thanks to my new runningnemesis. May your future enemy be asawesome as mine is.

On a less adversarial note, future eventson the social horizon include our St. Patty’sdowntown run on Wed., March 14; ourhistoric run of Turkey Creek on Monday,April 23. We’ll have another night CadesCove Run tentatively scheduled for June 2.Look for details on going to see the Smokiesplay. I’ve started another Facebook groupwhere you can stay current on the socialhappenings of the KTC. Join the group“Wednesday Night Runners and otherKTC Social Events”. See you out there.

After directing the Strawberry PlainsHalf Marathon, which only comestogether with the help of many

volunteers, I find myself very inspiredthem. The weather was very cold with achilling wind and folks were willing todrive out of their way tostand for hours in thecold. Why do we do this?Is it only to do their partfor the Knoxville TrackClub? I know that is notthe only reason. The vol-unteers offer themselvesbecause they get satis-faction from giving to others. They get asense of well being from being unselfish.

As infants we are nothing but selfish. Our parents and other adults in our livesdirect us to learn to be unselfish. Oneearly lesson I had was feeding the babygoats at the petting zoo. My mom wouldtell me that part of my role as a humanbeing was to look after animals. One daymy mom suggested I give my bottle tothe baby goat because he needed it morethan me. I remember giving that goat mybottle. I remember specifically thinkingthis was a sacrifice but I felt good aboutdoing it.

That brings me back to the volunteersat the Strawberry Plains Half, and atothers races. We know it is going to bea sacrifice , but we are willing to do itanyway because it feels good to do theright thing. It feels good to help otherpeople. And as fellow runners, we knowhow it helps to have someone cheer youon. We know how it helps to have waterand Gatorade handed to you.

My mom and dad always said to treatothers like you want to be treated. Theysaid to do the first kind act. They said you

may not be reciprocated and that wasOK, because you did the right thing. They said to always give without expec-tation of a reward.

As a volunteer for the track club, weusually get a KTC cou-pon or a cool tee shirt, but it is really only atoken of appreciation inconsideration of the timeand effort spent. We arevolunteering a signifi-cant amount of our freetime. We are volunteer-

ing our skills. We are volunteering ourenergy. Any perk we may get is a bonus. The real payback is that deep downfeeling that you are a good person, thatyou are doing something that matters.

This is why I am always so moved by

the huge volunteer turnout at the winterraces. Folks come in all bundled up,ready to face the elements. Many years itis the same folks. Hardy, fine bigheartedmen and women who come together likefamily to make this race happen. I havedirected this race for three years now andI have to fight to not get choked up overwhat a beautiful thing this is to watch. Itis an example of real love and what a realrunning community looks like.

When you join the Knoxville TrackClub or when you fill out an entry form, you are asked about volunteering. Ichecked that box myself about 7 yearsago. I have never regretted it. I haveenjoyed every opportunity I have everhad to bring what I had to offer to thetable. I had gotten a hundred fold back inreturn. KTC recognizes it’s volunteerseach year at the annual KTC picnic forvolunteering 5 or more times. If you feelyou would like to experience the joy thatcomes from giving back a little with yourfree time, please let me know. I can letyou know what volunteer opportunitiesare available.

I can be reached through the “volun-teer” link at KTC.org or e-mail me di-rectly at [email protected] . Pleasetry it out and see if you too don’t experi-ence a little joy and happiness from givingback to your track club, the KnoxvilleTrack Club.

The Knoxville Track Club has agreat reputation for putting on wellorganized, challenging and unique

events. The Dark Hollow Wallow, heldFebruary 12 at Big Ridge State Park, is noexception. Added this year to their Treadin’Trodden Trail Series this event fills theslot as a moderate distance event withgood portions of technical trails inter-mixed with some smooth single track.Course profile includes challenging roll-ers with several forcedextreme hill climbs. One that you can barelywalk up. Seriously.

Weather could nothave been much bet-ter for the event thisyear. Cold enough forgloves and thermalshirt but sunny withsome noticeable wind when you got tothe top of the ridges. As the course runsyou uphill for the first quarter mile or soit did not take long to warm-up for therest of the race. The steep climb quicklyseparated the pack of 75 or so runners, and that was a good thing. Trail was verynarrow single track with very few oppor-tunities to make a safe pass.

Once over the top we were on thesunny side of the ridge and the trail turnedto slippery mud (the oatmeal kind thatsticks to your shoes) and then back againto narrow single track that darted sharplyright and left around trees and obstacles. After a long climb/hike up the first reallysteep hill you come to the fist aid stationand a sharp turn down a spur trail whereyou do an out and back. While I generallydon’t like this scenario; on this course itwas nice because it was one of the fewopportunities where you could see whereyou were relative to the competition.

Coming back by this aid station, mak-ing a sharp turn and it was back up and

over another hill to a large loop trail thatincluded (but not necessarily limited to) asharp decent with virtually no trail tofollow (although the trail tree blazes makeit look like a polka dot forest), severe off-camber footing, slippery frozen rocks,Frost Flowers, slick moss covered rocks, slippery roots, sharp branches from dead-fall, sticker bushes and raspberry thick-ets, several hundred meters of bush-whacking and last but not (in any re-

spect) the least….themondo hill climb. Nojoke; the angle is sosteep that when youare walking/crawlingup your knees brushthe hill as your toestry and grip the shaleyou keep pushing backdown the hillside tothose below you. To

top that off, once you crest the hill thereis a reasonably long stretch of sharpjagged rocks covered by a couple inchesof leaves that want to roll your foot theopposite way you expect it to go. Fromthere however, things improve. For themost part.

Trail descends down past the waterstop where you make another sharp turnto the last 2+ mile stretch to the finish. This beautiful section of the trail followsa meandering streambed before it ends atthe edge of the lake along which you rununtil crossing an old coffer dam builtdecades ago. From there it’s up and overthe final hill to the finish line in the parkinglot where you started. For me; that wasa long 1:43 and change before.

A special “Thank You” to the BigRidge State Park Rangers and Staff thatdid an outstanding job of clearing andmonitoring the trails, providing heated, clean, well-stocked restrooms, use of thepavilion and a personal education on theFrost Flowers I saw along the trail.

MMMMMY Y Y Y Y LLLLLONGEST ONGEST ONGEST ONGEST ONGEST JJJJJOURNEYOURNEYOURNEYOURNEYOURNEY

by F.H. Broome (Bob’s grandfather)

At 3:00 the morning of July 4th

1898, I started on my bicyclefrom Mt. Nebo.

The feeling of awe inevitably accom-panying a trip through the country aloneat that unearthly hour was not in the leastdissipated by the dark patches of mudand shining pools of water scattered inominously close proximity along the pike.Nor were my nerves particularly soothedby the occasional passing of a farm wagon, which for anything I knew, might containhighway robbers. Now and then, as Isped silently by a dense wood, which hidthe feeble rays of the waning moon, Ifound that involuntarily I almost doubledmy speed. The truth is that, man thoughI was, my imagination peopled the sur-rounding country with legions of hostilebeings ready to attack me.

The sensation was so stimulating thatwithin a remarkably short time, whichseemed an age, I had passed beyond thepike and was realizing the mournfulprophecy of the mud holes. A drizzlingrain the day before had followed a longdrought and the condition of the dirtroads can be imagined. From Little Riverto Maryville, my wheel was almost use-less. Further on, I was compelled to taketo the woods, chiefly because the roadwas no longer passable except by wadingankle-deep in slush; partly, to escape thesweltering heat of the sun, which wasnow over two hours high. The windingpath I followed led me far out of mycourse, and I soon had to abandon it andcarry my burdensome bicycle backthrough tangled underbrush to the road.

Fortunately, I knew a family livingfour miles from Maryville. I enjoyedtheir country hospitality for an hour ormore, and then, leaving my pesky wheelbehind, set out to complete my journey

afoot, over a road which, running nearlyall the way through the woods, wastantalizingly smooth and dry.

At the hotel on the mountain, I de-voured a dinner fit for a king, and in theafternoon made an excursion with somefriends over the mountain; but to thisday, I cannot recall those last long sevenmiles without a sense of weariness.

LLLLLOSTOSTOSTOSTOSTby F. H. Broome

Lost. What words can express thebewilderment and despair suggested by the little monosyllable,

“lost?” Even if we restrict its applicationto the material world, it has a meaningunknown to one who has never sufferedthe experience it indicates.

Seven years ago, on a cold, rainy dayin April 1892, I undertook to ride adistance of thirty miles through the moun-tainous region of East Tennessee, overan unfrequented road which I had nevertraveled. Starting before noon with agood horse, I expected to take supper andmy destination; but ...

Within three miles of the place, Iunexpectedly came to a fork in the road.I halted. Which branch should I take?Either might be wrong: one of themcertainly was. A mistake would prob-ably mean a night in the woods withoutfood or shelter. To ponder the questionwas a waste of time. Hence, as one takinga leap in the dark, I turned to the right.

A half hour of anxious travel con-vinced me that I was wrong. But insteadof turning back, I foolishly attempted toreach the other road by a narrow path

through the woods. The distance wasgreater than I had anticipated, and theapproach of night brought no evidencethat my journey was near an end. Beingable no longer to see distinctly, I wan-dered from the path, and the black dark-ness of a starless night found me hope-lessly lost in a dense forest, with adrizzling rain and a gnawing hunger add-ing physical, to mental, torture. Thoughshivering with cold and weary from thelong ride, I could neither make a fire norlie down; for every leaf and twig weresaturated with water and pools werestanding on the hard ground all about me.

There I was—but here I am.

My maternal grandfather wasborn in Knoxville in February1876. His mother and father,

together with their then six children, emigrated from England in 1872 afterbeing evicted from their residence by alandlord resentful of Great-grandfather’svote for public education. The Broomefamily made their way to Knoxville, whereGreat-grandfather went into partnershipin the lumber business and later owned asawmill and cabinet shop in what isFountain City today.

Grandmother Broome was born inNovember 1876 and grew up in Dayton,Ohio. She and Granddad married in 1912in Knoxville where she was serving as aDeaconess in the Methodist Church. Mymother was the youngest of their threechildren. I was into my 20’s before Ithought to ask my grandmother if sheknew the Wright Brothers. Her replywas, “Of course, they had a bicycle shopdown the street.” The Wrights not onlyfabricated the plane, they made the en-gine in their shop.

I was fortunate to have contact withGrandmother and Granddad and theirextended families, and I have often thoughtof the changes during their lifetimes. Attheir births, travel was by foot, horse, railway or on a bicycle, (with difficulty!)They saw the advent of the automobile, the airplane, and manned space flight tothe moon. Granddad died August 10,1970 followed by Grandmother on Feb-ruary 21, 1971, both at the age of 94.

Adopt-a-Kid NeedsYour Help!

A little over ten years ago a verybright individual named BoSaulsbury, then president of the

Knoxville Track Club, came up with anidea to help kids who take part in ourKTC Youth Athletics Program. Whynot give KTC club members, communitymembers and corporations an opportu-nity to defray program costs for thosekids in our program that are in need? Itwas one of those “why did I not think ofthis” moments. What a great idea toadopt one of our kids who might nototherwise be able to participate in one ofour great programs. At Bo’s urging welaunched Adopt-a-Kid in 2000. Much tothe credit of KTC members, the programwas warmly received. In its first yearAdopt-a-Kid raised $ 4,800.00 to helpkids in need.

Last year donations represented lessthan $6.50 per club member. That’s lessthan a third of the cost of most road raceentry fees and only 5% of the cost of anew pair of running shoes.

In 2008 our program was renamedin honor of Markie Voyles. Markie

competed for our KTC Youth AthleticsTeam in cross country and indoor track. She was also a standout runner for WhiteCounty High School (Sparta, TN) andwas 2007 State A/AA Champion in the1600m and 3200m runs. Markie passedaway as a result of injuries sustained in anauto accident just one week from com-peting in the 2008 TSSAA State CrossCountry Championships. Markie’s gen-erous heart and love of kids exemplifiedwhat this program is all about.

I would like to thank those who haveso graciously supported this programover the last nine years. I am fully awarethat in the current economic climate sur-plus funds for donations are few and farbetween. The same economic conditionshave made it difficult for many parents tocobble together the finances to afford theprogram, meet entry and travel fees. Thisdespite having the most affordable YouthAthletics Program in the area. Requestsfor financial assistance have risen 15%alone in 2009.

I am committed to making sure thatfinances will not be a barrier to participa-

tion and I hope you feel the same as I do.I urge those who have not given toconsider giving back to a part of KTC thatis laying the foundation for the club’sfuture members. I know that many ofyou have a variety of charitable causesyou donate to and I certainly encourageyou to continue.

As we move into spring of anotheryear I hope that we may once again relyon your generosity. I fervently believe inwhat the KTC does for our youth. Itcannot be done without your help. As aparent, volunteer and director of theprogram for the last 22 years I know thatthere is no better place to put your timeand money than kids. Take some time toreview what we do during the course ofa year and ask yourself if contributing tothis effort is worthwhile. If so please goto http://www.ktcyouthathletics.org andclick the donation link to contribute. I amsure you will agree that your donationgoes a long way in our community and inour club. I thank you in advance for yoursupport, and urge you, if you have anyquestions, to please feel free to contactme at 865.406.4128.

Perfect race weather was grantedfor the 20th Annual Calhoun’s 10miler held in Lenoir City on Janu-

ary 28th. Once again we gathered all thevolunteers we could find and attracted arecord number of participants for thebeginning of the KTC Winter Long Dis-tance Series. Registration was handledwell by Elizabeth Corbett. And of coursethose Quick Chicks showed up on timedonned in their Quick Chick hats, whichI believe makes them run even faster.

Earlier in the week, I was told by MikeWortley of his formula for predicting thenumber of runners. While I was skepti-cal, he proved to be exactly on the num-ber! With 352 runners, that was a numberwe haven’t reached in many years.

The race started early Saturday morn-ing with Joe Jackson regaling us with hislovely voice singing the National Anthemand went off with no glitches other thana few disgruntled drivers on the road.Stewart Ellington led the pack with a timeof 54:02. Right on his heels were EthanCoffey (54:02) and Alan Horton (54:14).

Overall Female winner was Barbara Pow-ers at (1:03:53), while Rebecca McDowellwas second (1:04:27) and Kathy Wolskithird (1:05:37).

Male masters champ was GenoPhillips (57:37), while Valerie Bachmanearned female masters honors, running1:11:37. Male Grandmasters was KevinFitzgerald (1:01:06) and female grand-masters was Doris Windsand-Dausman(1:16:54). Male veterans winner wasJody Hinds, who ran 1:16:10, and DorisGove was awarded Female veterans titlefor her 1:50:35 performance. Clydesdaleoverall winners were Larry Brede(1:06:52), Jeff Chapman (1:07:53), andAaron Wise at (1:18;21). The Athenacrown went to Laura Owens at 1:32:26,followed by Kate Kraus (1:36:30) andSara Bowen (1:37:09).

We had over 50 volunteers this year atCalhouns and as usual, we couldn’t havedone it without them. They really steppedup this year with great support on thecourse and at the finish line. My numberone assistant was Bobby Trotter, who

wore many different hats starting longbefore Saturday morning, and even had agreat run. Earl and Phyllis Sizemoremanaged the parking lot, while registra-tion coordinators Jill Bedford and TonyOwens kept things moving as volunteerschecked in. Course setup was handledbeautifully by Jeff Colfer, Paul Barrette,Bob Cunningham, and Will Jorgensen.Great work was done by registrars Eliza-beth Corbett, Tracy Rafferty, CandieHewgley, Joe Piscetello, Liza Graves, LaurieGregory, Susan Musser, Joe Jackson, Jef-frey Long, Stacy Horsemanko, Cindy Pack,Terry Higgins, Scott Schmidt and Ken andShirley Siroris, and Sara Webb.

Water Stops were manned by Judyand Jim Seneker, Sandra Houston andson, Chip Lowder, Stacy Clark, andAdrian Sanabria. The finish line wassetup and manned by RonMcElhaney,David Simpson, John Smith,Vic Hair, Cait Bowen, Skipper and RayJohnson, Kim Emert and husband, AngieSchmidt, and Nathan Fagan.

We stepped up the number of coursemonitors this year to ensure a safe andenjoyable time on the course. Thanks toBobby Liles, Mike Daughtery , Chris Harper,Greg McMullen, Emily McCutheon, andMichael Holtz. Brian Lewis wrapped upthe event as the clean up crew.

Thanks to all the awesome volun-teers; I look forward to 2013.

ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS: BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A RUN-AWAY GNOME!

We’ll keep our eyes peeled here at Academy

Sports + Outdoors.

I’m keeping my eyes peeled for dinner! Are you guys hungry, too?

Nope. We already ‘8’. …

Hee-hee-hee…

Hey, is that the gnome over there?

No, that just Anthony the intern dancing for his

supper.

I guess no one is going to find that gnome. I guess not.

By the way….

-The morning started out cold andgot colder with wind picking up.But almost all the volunteers still

came on to work the 73 different jobs sothis race could be a success. I am mostgrateful. And even before the race, weassembled race packets at Bearden BeerMarket. Marvin Thomas, Gegetta Ferris,Sara Webb, Phil Kaplan, Vic Hair, Dave& Kathy Wolski, Stephen Thomas,Nathan Keller, Kathy Nash, Barbara Pow-ers, Kate Kraus, and Andrea Ludwigworked for hours assembling the 750race packets.

On Friday night before the race, wehad packet pick-up at Academy Sports &Outdoors. Cait Bowen, Doris Gove, KimFry, Shannon Conway, Scott & AngieSchmidt, Chris & Ben Welsh, LindseyRebert and Nathan Keller worked hard toget pre-registered runners their packetsand shirts, as well a register last minuterunners. Also on Friday night, I had acrew at Rush Strong, the race site, hardat work getting the food ready to feed the600 plus we expected. We had GegettaFerris, Jennifer Wolfenbarger, Amy

Holder, Ashley Elliott, Ron & Terri Preastand Joanna Kluck making sandwiches, cutting fruit and setting up tables. Theirhard work was much appreciated.

Our volunteer coordinator, Luke Coo-per, our core volunteer, who makes it allcome together, showed up day of race, bright and early at 6:00am. Shortlythereafter arrived Sara Webb, all the wayfrom Athens. She worked tirelessly onseveral jobs, coffee maker, registration, photographer and clean-up crew. Justthe coffee job alone would be over-whelming for most people, especiallywith records numbers turning out for therace. Will Jorgensen worked a coffeemaking shift as well, showing a quickability to learn. Shortly after Sara’s ar-rival came Em Thompson, who helpedwith the food table, getting the soupstarted for the runners, ran the raceherself and provided an outstanding doorprize for our participants. Later our foodcaptain Darren Stanford orchestrated thefood table during our critical hour whenall the runners came in. Darren made wellthought out decisions to make sure there

was something foreveryone to eat.We even had a fewleftovers to sharewith the trail racethe next day. AmyJones was incharge of the soup, which was a bighit. Thank you forthe soup, ChrisHarper. It was de-licious! MaxPaquette sat thisrace out to volun-teer instead. BruceBoles and Bill Graf

worked tirelessly keeping the food tablestocked, as well as helping clean upafterward.

Course mile markers were set up byBob Cunningham and Paul Barrette usinga flashlight, trying as best as they could tofind the paint on the road, much of whichhad washed off in the rain. Waterstations were set up by Joe Jackson,Scott Goss and Todd Rechenbach, carry-ing coolers, cups, garbage cans and gelsto mile two and to the corner of BeaverCreek and Bluff Road.

Parking captain was Nicole Howe, who skillfully directed parking for themuch larger than usual crowd of runners, with excellent help from Darren Stanford,Royce Sayer and Felon Wilson. Regis-tration captains were Michael Holtz,Angie Schmidt and Lindsey Rebert, whodid a great job managing the large crowd.Helping with registration were JustinEmert, Gegetta Ferris, Kimberly Emert,Jennifer Moore, Ken & Shirley Sirois,Liza Graves, Susan Musser, Sara Webb,Shannon Conway and Doug Young.Kudos to all.

Thanks to my dear husband, JoeBedford, who sang his heart out on thenational anthem again this year. Thanksalso to Pete Garza, who shot finish linephotos—www.petegarza.com—andMichael deLisle, who was shot picturesout on the course, as at most KTC races.

Finish line captains were DavidSimpson and John Smith.Niki and ChrisLehnherr helped remove chips along withBobby Trotter, Jill Lancaster, CraigSchwartz, Suzanne Oliver, Julia Johnstonand Dan Boles. In charge of handing outthe finisher medals were Patrick and ErinPidkowicz, Alan Boles, and ErnieMeiners. Ken Childs operated chip tim-ing. These hardy volunteers stood in theblistering cold for hours without a com-plaint. A special thanks goes to KeithStewart for escorting our hand cyclists.

belong to Kenyan runners.

Got your attention yet? It’s not justKenyans…how about two other greatAfrican running stories…Julius Achonand Lopez Lomong?

Julius ran from civil war in Ugandawhen he was abducted by soldiers at theage of 12. He was taken from home andthen, through a remarkable series ofevents, qualified for the district champi-onship track & field meet. After he wasunable to find transportation to the meet,he ran the 42 miles required to get to thetrack and proceeded to win the 800m,1,500m, and 3,000m earn-ing him a spot on the na-tional team at 13 years ofage. Julius ended up win-ning an NCAA title in 1996(800m in 1:44.55 – a recordthat still stands to this day)and he represented his coun-try, Uganda, in the ’96Olympic games running the1,500m. This story waswell chronicled recently in Running Timesmagazine.

Lopez was one of the “Lost Boys” ofthe Sudan that was abducted from homeat 6 years of age. He spent 10 years in arefugee camp and then was adopted by aUS family and lived in New York. Hehad a very successful high school run-ning campaign and earned a track schol-arship to Northern Arizona University(NAU) where he excelled. In 2007 hewas granted US citizenship and he laterearned his way on to the Olympic teamby placing 3rd in the 1,500m during theOlympic Trials in Eugene. Upon reach-ing Beijing his teammates were so movedby his inspirational story that he waschosen by the team captains to carry theUS flag in the Opening Ceremony. But itis his indefatigable spirit that pushed himto return to NAU after turning pro andled to his earning a bachelor’s degree andin December 2011. Lopez again carriedthe flag – this time leading the graduationceremonies and serving as the bearer for

the College of Business.

How many other Julius Achon’s orLopez Lomong’s are out there inAfrica…or elsewhere? How many don’tever get the opportunity? Is there some-one in an orphanage right now that couldbe next? I have no idea…but I can tell youthat without some type of interventionmany of the world’s best runners wouldnever have had the chance to toe the line.We are so incredibly blessed to live in acountry where we have the opportunityto live the dream…and I urge all of you tothink about ways you can help contributenot only to the running community butthe human race.

Part II

OK, enough on that…and now forsomething completely different – anothertotally random segue:

I just got back a few daysago from an advanced con-tinuing education course (al-ways in pursuit of new &improved tools to help run-ners) and am very excitedabout the possibilities. Well,my friends, this one justmay be a game changer -Dry NeedlingDry NeedlingDry NeedlingDry NeedlingDry Needling. Have you

heard of it? Countries across the globehave utilized this procedure for years tohelp athletes heal faster and get back totraining with less time lost in rehab. InDecember 2011 it became legal for trainedphysical therapists to use this techniquein TN so I completed the necessarycoursework and have already integratedit into my practice…more details to fol-low next issue. February 26th dawned chilly, butbeautiful as over 200 runners madethe trek to Paint Rock for the 11th

annual Whitestone 30k and relay. Theday couldn’t have been more perfect fora race! As the sun came up and themorning warmed the crowd event startedwith Alex Brede singing the pre-raceNational Anthem for the first time in fiveyears since she returned from Colorado. At the start of the pistol the crowd tookoff and really got to enjoy the dogs, skunks, friendly drivers, and numerousdownhills (some “standard”, some “in-verted”) that dot the countryside in andaround the Whitestone Inn.

The men’s race saw a dual betweenDarren Brown and Stew Ellington endingwith Darren’s 1:41:25 finish, two min-utes ahead of Stew. Brad Adams roundedout the top three. Kathy Wolski rippedthrough the course in 2:08:58, betteringher own course record by over a minute!Jenny Vance and Marsha Morton fin-ished second and third respectively. Otherawardees included Larry Brede andMelanie Cox (Masters), Mark Pierretand Doris Windsand-Dousman (Grand-masters), Royce Sayer and Mary Tedesco

(Senior Grandmasters), and Billy Will-iams and Laura Owens (Clydesdale/Athena). However, every finisher wastruly a winner in this race that challengeseach runner from start to finish. Sixteenteams entered the relay with Open win-ners “Trooper’s Bar”, Woman’s winner“Runner’s Market Ladies”, and Coedwinner “KPL Coed #2”.

As the athletes finished their run thestandard Whitestone feast prepared byour host Deneise Lane and her staffawaited each one. You gotta face reality– the food at this event is tops for theentire KTC race calendar! No Twinkieshere (or anywhere with the demise ofHostess L)! In fact, next year I think weshould start a write-in campaign toRunner’s World nominating this event asone of the top-10 in the country based onbreakfast alone.

As in all our events, this one couldn’thave been successful without our fantas-tic volunteers. First, the runners whodecided that 18.6 miles wasn’t enoughand volunteered for registration, parking, course setup, and course cleanup pulleddouble duty. Thanks to Susan “RD duty

isn’t enough” Ru-therford, WillJorgensen, BobbyTrotter, LindseyRebert, TroyRebert, LizaGraves, RobertBranson, BrentBueche, TerryHiggins, Jill andJoe Bedford, Jim“I can’t believe Ipicked this coursefor my longest ca-reer run”McCollum, Kenand Shirley “noth-ing says love like

post-run course cleanup” Sirois, DorisWindsand-Dousman, Al Leitch, andChris “I have no one to blame if the relaytransition gets messed up since I’m therelay coordinator and I’m running it”Kane. By the way, Chris also won therandom volunteer drawing and got tospend Saturday night at the Whitestoneon the KTC. Michael deLisle and TerryDepp were on the course and at the finishtaking masterly photos that I’m sure arealready on everyone’s Facebook page!

Then there was the great course crewthat 1) kept you hydrated, 2) kept you oncourse, and 3) let you know your splittimes that you probably could have livedwithout. Thanks to Bobby Liles, NicoleSchmidt, Herb Gengler, Scott Goodson,Peggy Kane, Michael Holtz, Greg “hurryback from my daughter’s college trip soI can help” Johnson, Michelle “it’s notreally that spooky at” Midnight, BobAdams, Natalie and Elizabeth “dad madeus do it” Bueche, Whitney Lewis, Houk,Tracy Rafferty, Gail Leitch, Jessica andDaniel “I’m on call, but still going tovolunteer so please put me at the onelocation on the course with cell reception”Horton, Sigrid and John Petersen, Laura“I can’t believe I can’t run” Gearhiser,Bob Barber, and Kevin “where did youbuy those shoes” Pack. Thanks also tothe Roane County Sheriff’s Departmentand EMT who ensured we had a safeouting on the course. We also had awonderful finish line crew led by RonMcElhaney with support from WendyWilliams, Nathan Keller, and Sarah, Alex, and Maci Brede, with results tabulatedquickly by Lindsey Sellmer.

Finally, a special thanks to our greatKTC staff. When some of the coursesetup volunteers couldn’t make it in timeto setup Kristy Altman and Mike Wortleypicked up 100% of the RD duties atregistration so we could mark the course. It’s great to know that we’ve got suchprofessionals supporting our organiza-tion! Thanks again to all the great par-ticipants and volunteers who made theevent so enjoyable. Hope to see youagain next year!

barrel downhill, turning west on Middle to Twister. After Twister, return to Lake, following it east to Red Hill Trail, then following it around to the

6 post. Jog west to I Trail, then up to Middle. Follow Middle west, junction with Low Gap, then up to the gap itself. Turn left onto Ridge and follow

Ridge Trail west to the 13 post, where the course turns right and stumbles downhill to the finish, where runners collapse in paroxysms of pain, delight,

and oxygen deprivation.

DIRECTIONS: From Knoxville, take Pellissippi Parkway across the Clinch River to Edgemoor Drive and bear east about 3/4 mile, parking at or near

the kiosk nearest the trailheads. Lat: 36.000186°N, Long: -84.185251°WREGISTRATION AND FEES: Fee: $10.00. Yup, you heard me: ten bucks. Five bucks for students 14 and younger. Two KTC volunteer coupons

will waive fee. Online registration available at www.ktc.org. Participants are encouraged to donate to Friends of Haw Ridge at registration.

T-SHIRTS: Special limited edition T-shirts will be printed for the series. This is the same shirt as at all other Treadin’ Trodden Trails races;

one shirt per runner PER SEASON please. Taking multiple shirts minimizes monies we are able to donate to KTC’s Youth Athletics Program.

RACE NUMBER PICKUP: Numbers will not be mailed. Pick up packet at race site 30-90 minutes before the start.

AWARDS AND REWARDS: Awards will vary from race to race, but each race offers the eminent satisfaction of completing a challenging run,

testing oneself against the elements and participating in a delightful romp among the woods, waters and fields of East Tennessee.

SPECIAL SERIES AWARDS: Points will be awarded for overall finish (and volunteerism) at each of the TTT Series races. Top point earners

at the end of the series (10 each male / female and < 40 / 40+) will receive TTT Series awards. Overall top male and female and top male and

female masters qualify for free entry to Big South Fork Trail Race and hotel accomodations for that race. In order to qualify for a series award,

an individual must be a current KTC member and volunteer at a minimum of two Treadin’ Trodden Trails events. Point totals accrue in a

maximum of ten series events.

RESULTS: Results will be available on the Knoxville Track Club website: www.ktc.org

COURSE ETIQUETTE: We reserve the right to disqualify anyone who exhibits unsportsmanlike conduct or is abusive to volunteers. Due to

insurance regulations, no headsets, earphones, bicycles, baby strollers, roller blades or pets on the course.

SAFETY: The course will be monitored with water and aid stations; however, due to the unusual nature of this race (and trail racing generally) we

strongly recommend that you : (1) Carry your own water with a fanny pack, (2) If sensitive to insect stings or bites, carry your own medication, and

(3) Do some pre-race training offroad, as there is no substitute for experience. We want you to have a good time.
